The Satellite M300 also offers a variety of useful and practical features, such as a flush mounted touchpad, which rests seamlessly across the center of the palm rest with a white LED light across the top to enhance the detail-oriented finish, while providing a slight texture change so users can easily find the touchpad without looking away from the screen. Innovative Sleep-and-Charge USB ports incorporated into the M300 series allow for popular mobile devices such as MP3 players, mobile phones and PDAs to be charged whether the laptop is powered-on or off. Another convenient feature found on the Satellite M300 is the built-in Webcam with Toshiba"s facial recognition software, which offers a user a unique and fun way to gain access to the laptop based on the user"s face.

Toshiba currently offers two Satellite lines of notebooks: the regular Satellite line and the Satellite Pro line. The notebooks in these two series often have similar specs and the main differentiators are that the Pro line has a more business-like design while the regular line has a more flashy design for consumers.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro line has a broad spectrum of notebooks ranging from the 13.3-inch U400 to the 17-inch L300. The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 sits in the middle of this line, targeting business users with its 14.1-inch display, Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.40GHz and 2GB memory. There are two pre-configured models currently in the M300 series: the EZ1001V and the S1002V. The EZ1001V has a slower processor (2.1GHz Core 2 Duo) and 1GB memory. We used the higher-end S1002 for this review and the benchmark tests. The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with a 160GB hard drive, a DVD SuperMulti drive, WiFi 802.11 a/g/n and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR. The notebook has Windows Vista Business (32-bit) edition with an option to downgrade to Windows XP, which can be a bonus if your business IT infrastructure still favors XP. If the specs don’t meet your requirements, Toshiba offers plenty of options for a customized model with processor speeds as high as 2.5GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo T9300), Windows Vista Ultimate, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 discrete graphics. The list price for the M300-S1002V is $1,149 while the top of the line configuration with a bigger battery and Labelflash DVD labeling will run up to $1,535.
Unlike the flashy fusion finish found on the Satellite U405, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 has a plain business notebook design. The Toshiba has a brushed silver finish with a black keyboard and black bottom, and it looks well built. The 14.1-inch TruBrite TFT LCD display has 1280 x 800 native WXGA resolution and is glossier than the Satellite U405’s display. The viewing angle is good on the M300’s display but the LCD has a relatively low contrast; even at the darkest setting blacks aren’t black. Color saturation isn’t impressive either. But the display is brighter compared to the U405 display when playing dark movie scenes.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V has a faster CPU than the Toshiba Satellite U405 and the benchmark numbers reflect the speed. The M300 runs on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor (T8300) at 2.4GHz with 3MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz FSB (Intel Santa Rosa Centrino platform). There is no AMD-based option for the Satellite Pro M300. The M300-S1002V comes with 2GB memory (PC2-5300) DDR2 SDRAM. There are 2 memory slots on the notebook, and max memory is 4GB. Both pre-configured M300 models have integrated graphics powered by the Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. A discrete graphics option is available on the customized model. Since the M300 isn’t meant to be a multimedia notebook, it has a 160 gig Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) instead of the 250 gig hard drive found on the U405. Again the larger hard drive option (320GB) is available for build-to-order. Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V has a right-side-opening DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) drive supporting up to 11 formats. It doesn’t come with Labelflash, but the built to order model offers that option for $15 extra.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V benchmarked very well, with fast CPU speeds and very decent numbers on the other hardware. The graphics numbers were higher than the U405 even though they have the same integrated graphics chipset. We did benchmark tests with PCMark 05 and below are the benchmark numbers from the PCMark tests and Windows Vista Experience Index:
These are very respectable numbers for a business notebook. As you’d expect the graphics numbers are lower because the notebook has integrated graphics with shared memory. We tested DVD watching, gaming and Internet content streaming, and the Satellite M300 did reasonably well in all tests. Games like Rise of Nations and Age of Empires III ran smoothly, but games that require intensive graphics power like Battlefield 2 won’t install or play well on the Toshiba.
Like many Toshiba notebook models, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN (802.11a/g/n). Interestingly, the same WiFi chip in the U405 gets better signal strength than the M300. That’s not to say that the M300 doesn’t get good WiFi signal, just not as excellent as on the U405. We tested the notebook with our N router and it gets very good signal even from 30 feet away and streaming video/movies over WiFi is smooth and speedy. The Toshiba also has built-in Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR which enhanced the speed of data transfer.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 has a standard set of ports including 3 USB 2.0 ports (two on the left side and one on the right side), 10/100 Ethernet LAN port and modem port on the right side, ExpressCard slot (ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54) and a security lock slot on the right. There is also an RGB monitor port on the left for plugging the notebook to a bigger monitor and a 4 pin unpowered FireWire port. The cooling vent dispatches the heat through the openings on the left of the notebook and keeps the bottom from heating up too much, and it works. The notebook doesn’t get too hot while playing DVDs or games.
There is also a 5-in-1 media card reader that reads SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Multi Media Card and xD Picture Cards. For using headphones, the Toshiba has a 3.5mm headphone jack with no S/P DIF support.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with Windows Vista Business Edition SP1 (32-bit) that’s downgrade-able to Windows XP. There is a Windows Vista Ultimate version available on the built-to-order model. In addition to Windows IE, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Windows Calendar, Windows Contacts and other software and tools that come with the OS, the Toshiba comes with a good bundle of useful utilities. These applications include Toshiba’s own DVD Player, Disc Creator, Bluetooth stack, speech system and other utilities. Third-party software includes Adobe Acrobat reader 8, InterVideo WinDVD and Google tools. Toshiba also bundled a good number of board games and puzzle games with the notebook and offers link to WildTangent online games. Possibly useful trial software titles include Microsoft Office Pro 2007 (60-day trial), Norton 360 All-in-One Security (60-day trial), AutoBackup (30-day trial) and QuickBooks software and services. For security, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with face recognition software that uses the webcam. Since the notebook doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner, this feature becomes essential if password protection isn’t sufficient. The face recognition worked very well in our tests, even in low-light environments.
Like most of today’s notebooks, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with bloatware that wastes disk space and desktop real estate. Bloatware includes Napster Music download, eMusic Music download, shutterfly photo print services, Toshiba photo prints and Vongo movie services. Not items that belong on a business machine.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with a meager 6-cell battery that’s 3700mAh in capacity. There is a more powerful 9-cell 6000mAh battery for purchase ($129) should you need more power, and you will if you are not sitting by a power outlet all the time. The M300’s battery won’t last you an hour if the notebook is running on the High Performance power setting. On the Balanced setting with WiFi on, the notebook lasted 2.5 hours performing tasks such as web browsing, working on documents and viewing photos. When watching a DVD, the M300 lasted 1.5 hours with Wi-Fi turned off. We discovered that the battery indicator didn’t always reflect the battery life accurately, and as result we had the notebook going into hibernation due to low battery level (4% left) while the indicator showed 38% juice left. The notebook takes about 3 hours to fully charge from a drained state and the power supply is a world AC charger (100-240V/50-60Hz) that weighs 0.77 lbs.
For business users who can live without a flashy notebook, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 provides plenty of computing power for productivity (as long as you are not into videos or gaming). The notebook benchmarks well and has ample ports for connections on the go. The Windows Vista Business Edition ensures (for now) the downgrade-ability to Windows XP in case your company is still on XP. Toshiba’s software and utilities are always a plus. The 14.1-inch size combined with the reasonable price make the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 a good choice for companies that buy bulk computer for their work force.
Pro: The notebook has a bright display, though it’s somewhat washed out when watching videos. Has plenty of horsepower for business applications and ample ports for connectivity. Good software bundle and Windows XP as an option. Built-to-order options can make this notebook top of the line in terms of specs.
Con:The display, while bright, lacks color contrast which makes movie watching a bit dull. Graphics intensive games won’t play on this notebook. No S/P DIF audio support. Poor battery life.
Display: 14.1” diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display at 1280 x 800 native resolution (WXGA). Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory.
Software: Windows Vista Business Edition (32-bit), SP1 Operating System. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Toshiba DVD Player and Disc Creator software, Ulead DVD MovieFactory and Google tools. Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer included. Also face recognition software for security and Toshiba Recovery Disc creator included. Trial software includes: Microsoft Office Pro 2007 (60-day trial) and Norton All-in-One security (60-day trial).
In Toshiba’s five notebook product lines, the Qosmio notebooks focus on entertainment. The Toshiba F45-AV425 represents that focus with its widescreen display, NVIDIA graphics, built-in HD-DVD drive, Harman Kardon speakers with subwoofer, Dolby Home Theater audio and a HDMI port for hooking up to an LCD or plasma TV. This 15.4” notebook has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 300GB hard drive and Windows Vista Ultimate. The Toshiba Qosmio F45 is on the thicker side and weighs 6.6 pounds that’s heavier than competing HP and Dell models. But then, The Qosmio line is meant to be a multimedia powerhouse most at home in a living room or desk rather than a backpack. The $1,599 F45 review unit we received is the higher-end configuration for this model with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT dedicated graphics.
Despite the large size in this thin and small-crazed notebook world, the Toshiba Qosmio F45 looks well built and has its moments in design. The gloss black lid with Qosmio branding and white inner surfaces help create a sleek look, and the white keyboard is easy on the eyes. The Toshiba has a round AV control on the right side of the keyboard and a DJ style volume control on the left, resonating with the round speaker grills above the keyboard. They do look unique and cool. The notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard along with a touch pad and fingerprint scanner. The full-size keyboard feels comfy to type on and has good travel by notebook standards. The shiny and smooth wrist area feels great after removing the super-sized marketing stickers (fortunately they peel off easily and cleanly).
Like most 15-inch notebooks, the Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 doesn’t have a separate number pad on the right, but it does have a row of AV controls including play/pause, stop, fast forward, rewind and brightness controls as well as Dolby virtual speaker audio set up. There is also a row of LEDs on the front left corner that indicate power, battery status, wireless, hard drive activity and more. There is a dedicated wireless slider on the right side of the notebook that turns WiFi on and off. The 1.3 megapixel web cam and built-in mic sit on the bezel above the display and they work well with Skype for video calls.
The Toshiba Qosmio has a beautiful 15.4-inch display that’s 1280 x 800 in resolution. The widescreen features Toshiba’s TruBrite technology and supports 720p (HDTV) content. While the resolution is quite common among the 13.3 to 15-inch crop, the display is color saturated and balanced with great viewing angles. HD-DVD movies are several steps above standard DVDs in picture quality, and they look gorgeous on the Toshiba’s display. Regular DVDs, streaming movies streamed over the Internet and games also look great on the Qosmio. The Harman/Kardon speakers with subwoofer combined with Dolby audio software give the Toshiba a full and balanced sound. The channel separation is good and the bass was strong but not overwhelming or distorted. The volume is great by notebook standards, but be aware that Toshiba’s HD DVD Player bundled with the notebook is quieter in playback compared to IE and Windows Media Player. You can remedy this by choosing 2-channel output instead of 5.1 in the HD DVD Player software settings when using the built-in speakers. Music playback, gaming and video call sound quality was excellent and volume was loud.
Thanks to discrete graphics, the Toshiba is a formidable gaming machine that can run the latest games well. We tested some less demanding games such as Rise of Legends and more demanding games such as Company of Heroes and the Toshiba Qosmio F45 handled them with ease. The respond time was fast, fps were solid, cinema cut scenes were very smooth and audio was excellent. If you are looking for a good AV notebook that will do well in gaming, the Qosmio won’t disappoint.
Unlike the Toshiba Satellite P205 notebooks that allow build-to-order, the Toshiba Qosmio F45 has only three pre-configured models including the F45-AV411, F45-AV423 and the F45-AV425. The Qosmio F45-AV425 has the fastest CPU in the series, running on an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 at 2GHz with 2 megs of L2 cache and an 800 MHz FSB (Intel Santa Rosa chipset). The F45-AV425 also is the only model in the series that offers discrete graphics powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB GDDR2 discrete graphics memory plus 255MB dynamic shared graphics memory using NVIDIA TurboCache technology. This is a powerful graphics solution that’s popular among fast, high-end 15-inch notebooks currently on the market including the 15 inch MacBook Pro. The Toshiba has two SDRAM slots with max capacity of 4GB memory. The pre-configured F45-AV425 comes with 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM. The notebook has a 300 gig serial ATA hard drive (4200 RPM) and the notebook is loaded with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. The front-loading optical drive is an HD DVD-ROM/DVD SuperMulti (+/- double layer) drive that supports 12 formats (the Qosmio is an affordable way to get into HD DVD).
The Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 comes with Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN and has excellent WiFi performance. Using 802.11n, The range is great and signal strength is fantastic. We watched movies on Netflix over the Internet several rooms removed from our WiFi N router and movies played smoothly. Other networking includes 10/100 Ethernet (Realtek) and an internal modem. There’s no Bluetooth hardware onboard, but Toshiba’s pervasive Bluetooth stack ready to work with a Bluetooth USB key. In addition there are 4 USB 2.0 ports (2 on each side of the notebook), a FireWire IEEE-1394 port, an ExpressCard slot (supports ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54) and a 5-in-1 built-in card reader slot (SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MMC, xD Picture Card).
The Toshiba Qosmio has VGA, S-Video and HDMI ports. Audio ports includes S/PDIF (shared with headphone port), mic input and headphone output ports. For security, there is a fingerprint scanner that works with the F45’s TPM (Trusted Platform Module).
The Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 comes with Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit) while the lower configurations in this notebook series come with Windows Vista Home Premium. Bundled software includes Microsoft Works v8.5, Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0, Toshiba HD DVD Player, Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 and Toshiba Speech system. That’s on par with most software bundle on Windows notebooks and covers basic productivity and multimedia needs. Like all current Toshiba notebooks, the Qosmio comes with a recovery DVD that has software and drivers to restore the notebook to factory settings (there is no recovery partition on the hard drive).
Sadly like many of today’s notebooks, the Toshiba Qosmio comes with at least 3 times more bloatware and trialware than useful software. The desktop is loaded with shortcut icons that lead to CNN Pipeline, eBay, Vongo, Napster, Shutterfly and more. Mixing these shortcuts with important ones such as Toshiba support/tutorial shortcuts will surely confuse a novice user. In addition to the toolbars and music downloads, there are some useful trial software such as Microsoft Office Trial Home and Student 2007 Edition and nagging to borderline pushy trial software like McAfee Internet Security Suite.
Like the 17” Toshiba Satellite P205, the Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack that’s 4000 mAh (10.8v) in capacity. With a bright widescreen, dedicated graphics, HD-DVD drive and speakers, etc. onboard, the battery on the Toshiba has a lot of hardware to power. We had expected the battery life wouldn’t be stellar, but our battery test results still surprised us with even shorter runtime than we’d expected. A 45 minute movie streamed over WiFi from the Internet streaming with the power setting at “balanced” drained half of a full charge. Just installing (not playing) Rise of Legends (4 CDs) took 38% of a full battery charge. Standby time isn’t great either. The good news is even on the balanced power setting, the screen is bright and easy to see when viewing movies, games and other applications. The bad news is that the battery life of the Qosmio is approaching the “non-portable” portable class.
The Toshiba offers High Performance, Power Saver and Balanced settings and a custom setting where you can set your own performance and conservation balance. The notebook comes with a 120W world charger (a large brick) that takes input 100-240V.
The Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 is a competitive AV and gaming notebook with a fantastic screen, powerful processor and dedicated graphics and excellent sound system. The HD-DVD optical is a valuable add-on and the WiFi 802.11AGN has excellent range and strength. If you are looking for a notebook to watch and edit movies, play music and games on top of web browsing, working on Office files and other basic functions; the Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 is a strong contender at a reasonable price for what you get. Though it has a very pleasing design, the thickness and weight might turn some folks away.
Display: 15.4” diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display at 1280 x 800 native resolution (WXGA), native support for 720p content. NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics, 256MB GDDR2 discrete graphics memory, plus up to 255MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA TurboCache. Total available graphics memory 511MB.
Software:Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit) Operating System. Microsoft Works v8.5, Adobe Acrobat Reader v8.0, Toshiba HD DVD Player software, Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 and InterVideo WinDVD 8. Recovery software included on CD. Trial software includes: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Edition (60-day trial) and McAfee Internet Security Suite (30-day trial).
We see what Toshiba was trying to do with this laptop, giving it something a bit different to entice the user to its models. Unfortunately as much as the laptop itself is not a bad machine, the extra bit of individuality makes the performance suffer and all in all feels a tad pointless.
Processor: Intel® Core i3-330M Processor Memory: 4GB DDR3 Graphics: Intel HM55 Express Chipset with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD Hard disk: 320GB Display: 13.3in Toshiba TruBrite WXGA TFT High Brightness display with Touch function Connectivity: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, Fast Ethernet LAN Ports: Eexternal monitor, RJ-45, external microphone, headphone (stereo), SP/DIF (optical) shared with headphone socket, HDMI-CEC (REGZA-Link) supporting 1080p, 5-in-1 Bridge Media slot (supports SD Cards up to 16 GB, Memory Stick up to 256 MB, Memory Stick Pro up to 4 GB, MultiMedia Cardup to 1 GB and xD-Picture Card up to 2 GB), eSATA/USB 2.0 supporting USB Sleep-and-Charge, 2 x USB 2.0 and integrated HD Web Camera with AutoMacro support and built-in microphone. Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Additionally, certain optical media recorded on your optical drive may not playback or operate properly on other PCs or optical media players. These problems are not due to any defect in your Toshiba PC or optical drive. Please refer to your PC"s product specification for listing of specific format compatibilities. Recording or viewing of certain optical media may be limited or prevented in accordance with applicable copy protection standards. 7 Display. Small bright dots may appear on your screen display when you turn on your PC. Your display contains an extremely large number of thin-film transistors (TFT) and is manufactured using high-precision technology. Any small bright dots that may appear on your display are an intrinsic characteristic of the TFT manufacturing technology. Over a period of time, and depending on the usage of the computer, the brightness of the screen will deteriorate. This is also an intrinsic characteristic of the screen technology. When the computer is operated on battery power, the screen with dim and you may not be able to increase the brightness of the screen while on battery power. 8 Graphics (Graphics Processing Unit). GPU performance may vary depending on product model, design configuration, applications, power management settings and features utilized. GPU performance is only optimized when operating in AC power mode and may decrease considerably when operating in battery power mode. Total Available Graphics Memory is the total of, as applicable, Dedicated Video Memory, System Video Memory and Shared System Memory. Shared System Memory will vary depending on system memory size and other factors. 9 Modem Speed. Due to FCC limitations, speeds of 53 kbps are the maximum permissible transmission rates during download. Actual data transmission speeds will vary depending on line conditions. 10 Wireless. Wireless connectivity and some features may require you to purchase additional software, external hardware or services. Availability of public wireless LAN access points may be limited. The transmission speed over the wireless LAN and the distance over which wireless LAN can reach may vary depending on surrounding electromagnetic environment, obstacles, access point design and configuration, and client design and software/hardware configurations. The actual transmission speed will be lower than the theoretical maximum speed. To use the Atheros SuperAG™ or SuperG™ wireless function, if available, your client and access point must support the corresponding feature. Performance of these functions may vary depending on the format of data transmitted. 11 Weight.
