Toshiba currently offers two Satellite lines of notebooks: the regular Satellite line and the Satellite Pro line. The notebooks in these two series often have similar specs and the main differentiators are that the Pro line has a more business-like design while the regular line has a more flashy design for consumers.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro line has a broad spectrum of notebooks ranging from the 13.3-inch U400 to the 17-inch L300. The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 sits in the middle of this line, targeting business users with its 14.1-inch display, Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.40GHz and 2GB memory. There are two pre-configured models currently in the M300 series: the EZ1001V and the S1002V. The EZ1001V has a slower processor (2.1GHz Core 2 Duo) and 1GB memory. We used the higher-end S1002 for this review and the benchmark tests. The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with a 160GB hard drive, a DVD SuperMulti drive, WiFi 802.11 a/g/n and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR. The notebook has Windows Vista Business (32-bit) edition with an option to downgrade to Windows XP, which can be a bonus if your business IT infrastructure still favors XP. If the specs don’t meet your requirements, Toshiba offers plenty of options for a customized model with processor speeds as high as 2.5GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo T9300), Windows Vista Ultimate, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 discrete graphics. The list price for the M300-S1002V is $1,149 while the top of the line configuration with a bigger battery and Labelflash DVD labeling will run up to $1,535.
Unlike the flashy fusion finish found on the Satellite U405, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 has a plain business notebook design. The Toshiba has a brushed silver finish with a black keyboard and black bottom, and it looks well built. The 14.1-inch TruBrite TFT LCD display has 1280 x 800 native WXGA resolution and is glossier than the Satellite U405’s display. The viewing angle is good on the M300’s display but the LCD has a relatively low contrast; even at the darkest setting blacks aren’t black. Color saturation isn’t impressive either. But the display is brighter compared to the U405 display when playing dark movie scenes.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V has a faster CPU than the Toshiba Satellite U405 and the benchmark numbers reflect the speed. The M300 runs on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor (T8300) at 2.4GHz with 3MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz FSB (Intel Santa Rosa Centrino platform). There is no AMD-based option for the Satellite Pro M300. The M300-S1002V comes with 2GB memory (PC2-5300) DDR2 SDRAM. There are 2 memory slots on the notebook, and max memory is 4GB. Both pre-configured M300 models have integrated graphics powered by the Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. A discrete graphics option is available on the customized model. Since the M300 isn’t meant to be a multimedia notebook, it has a 160 gig Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) instead of the 250 gig hard drive found on the U405. Again the larger hard drive option (320GB) is available for build-to-order. Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V has a right-side-opening DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) drive supporting up to 11 formats. It doesn’t come with Labelflash, but the built to order model offers that option for $15 extra.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300-S1002V benchmarked very well, with fast CPU speeds and very decent numbers on the other hardware. The graphics numbers were higher than the U405 even though they have the same integrated graphics chipset. We did benchmark tests with PCMark 05 and below are the benchmark numbers from the PCMark tests and Windows Vista Experience Index:
These are very respectable numbers for a business notebook. As you’d expect the graphics numbers are lower because the notebook has integrated graphics with shared memory. We tested DVD watching, gaming and Internet content streaming, and the Satellite M300 did reasonably well in all tests. Games like Rise of Nations and Age of Empires III ran smoothly, but games that require intensive graphics power like Battlefield 2 won’t install or play well on the Toshiba.
Like many Toshiba notebook models, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN (802.11a/g/n). Interestingly, the same WiFi chip in the U405 gets better signal strength than the M300. That’s not to say that the M300 doesn’t get good WiFi signal, just not as excellent as on the U405. We tested the notebook with our N router and it gets very good signal even from 30 feet away and streaming video/movies over WiFi is smooth and speedy. The Toshiba also has built-in Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR which enhanced the speed of data transfer.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 has a standard set of ports including 3 USB 2.0 ports (two on the left side and one on the right side), 10/100 Ethernet LAN port and modem port on the right side, ExpressCard slot (ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54) and a security lock slot on the right. There is also an RGB monitor port on the left for plugging the notebook to a bigger monitor and a 4 pin unpowered FireWire port. The cooling vent dispatches the heat through the openings on the left of the notebook and keeps the bottom from heating up too much, and it works. The notebook doesn’t get too hot while playing DVDs or games.
There is also a 5-in-1 media card reader that reads SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Multi Media Card and xD Picture Cards. For using headphones, the Toshiba has a 3.5mm headphone jack with no S/P DIF support.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with Windows Vista Business Edition SP1 (32-bit) that’s downgrade-able to Windows XP. There is a Windows Vista Ultimate version available on the built-to-order model. In addition to Windows IE, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Windows Calendar, Windows Contacts and other software and tools that come with the OS, the Toshiba comes with a good bundle of useful utilities. These applications include Toshiba’s own DVD Player, Disc Creator, Bluetooth stack, speech system and other utilities. Third-party software includes Adobe Acrobat reader 8, InterVideo WinDVD and Google tools. Toshiba also bundled a good number of board games and puzzle games with the notebook and offers link to WildTangent online games. Possibly useful trial software titles include Microsoft Office Pro 2007 (60-day trial), Norton 360 All-in-One Security (60-day trial), AutoBackup (30-day trial) and QuickBooks software and services. For security, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with face recognition software that uses the webcam. Since the notebook doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner, this feature becomes essential if password protection isn’t sufficient. The face recognition worked very well in our tests, even in low-light environments.
Like most of today’s notebooks, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with bloatware that wastes disk space and desktop real estate. Bloatware includes Napster Music download, eMusic Music download, shutterfly photo print services, Toshiba photo prints and Vongo movie services. Not items that belong on a business machine.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 comes with a meager 6-cell battery that’s 3700mAh in capacity. There is a more powerful 9-cell 6000mAh battery for purchase ($129) should you need more power, and you will if you are not sitting by a power outlet all the time. The M300’s battery won’t last you an hour if the notebook is running on the High Performance power setting. On the Balanced setting with WiFi on, the notebook lasted 2.5 hours performing tasks such as web browsing, working on documents and viewing photos. When watching a DVD, the M300 lasted 1.5 hours with Wi-Fi turned off. We discovered that the battery indicator didn’t always reflect the battery life accurately, and as result we had the notebook going into hibernation due to low battery level (4% left) while the indicator showed 38% juice left. The notebook takes about 3 hours to fully charge from a drained state and the power supply is a world AC charger (100-240V/50-60Hz) that weighs 0.77 lbs.
For business users who can live without a flashy notebook, the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 provides plenty of computing power for productivity (as long as you are not into videos or gaming). The notebook benchmarks well and has ample ports for connections on the go. The Windows Vista Business Edition ensures (for now) the downgrade-ability to Windows XP in case your company is still on XP. Toshiba’s software and utilities are always a plus. The 14.1-inch size combined with the reasonable price make the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 a good choice for companies that buy bulk computer for their work force.
Pro: The notebook has a bright display, though it’s somewhat washed out when watching videos. Has plenty of horsepower for business applications and ample ports for connectivity. Good software bundle and Windows XP as an option. Built-to-order options can make this notebook top of the line in terms of specs.
Con:The display, while bright, lacks color contrast which makes movie watching a bit dull. Graphics intensive games won’t play on this notebook. No S/P DIF audio support. Poor battery life.
Display: 14.1” diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display at 1280 x 800 native resolution (WXGA). Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory.
Software: Windows Vista Business Edition (32-bit), SP1 Operating System. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Toshiba DVD Player and Disc Creator software, Ulead DVD MovieFactory and Google tools. Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer included. Also face recognition software for security and Toshiba Recovery Disc creator included. Trial software includes: Microsoft Office Pro 2007 (60-day trial) and Norton All-in-One security (60-day trial).
Among the forest of Toshiba laptop models, the Toshiba Satellite U405 series is among their most lightweight and affordable class of notebooks. There are two flavors of the Satellite U405 series: the U405 that comes with Intel processors and the U405D series that comes with AMD mobile processors. For this review, we have the U405-S2830 notebook which runs on Intel Core 2 Duo processor on the Santa Rosa platform with 3GB of RAM and 250GB HDD. Throw in the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (integrated graphics), a SuperMulti (+/-R double Layer) DVD drive with Labelflash, WiFi 802.11a/g/n and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, you’ve got a very decent 13.3-inch notebook for a good price. From the specs, the Satellite U405 series is comparable to the Toshiba Satellite Pro M300 series, for those of you who are doing some comparison shopping. It will come down to how big a screen you want (13.3 vs. 14.1 inches) and how much you want to haul (4.85 lbs. vs. 5.2 lbs at the starting point). The U405 comes with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (32-bit) and even though the list price for the U405-S2830 model is set at $1,149.99 you can find some very good deals online and in stores.
While the new Dell lightweight notebooks feature more sharp edges and a brushed metal look, the HP and Toshiba notebooks remain curvy and shiny. The Toshiba Satellite U405 scores the fashionable fusion finish with their Horizon pattern on top of high gloss black, making the notebook look classier and more expensive than its price tag suggests. We only wish that the Toshiba logo on the lid were smaller—it’s much larger than other manufacturers’ branding and it interrupts the fusion finish. The shiny finish does show fingerprints and hand grease. White LED lights in the media touch controls and on top of the touch pad stand out and compliment the chrome-like mouse keys.
The Toshiba has the standard 85-key US keyboard, and the keys are also high gloss but comfortable. There’s a web cam with built-in mic above the display. The touch multimedia controls and the power button sit above the keyboard and are flanked by stereo speakers that are not terribly loud. The TouchPad pointing system is quite flat but has some texture so that your finger won’t completely slip out of the TouchPad area when you work the cursor. The chromed left and right mouse buttons are large and easy to use, and the fingerprint reader sits in between the two mouse buttons. The system indicator LED lights are located on the front right edge and there’s a volume jog wheel on the front of the notebook. Those who like wireless on/off sliders should be happy to hear that the Toshiba has one on the front of the notebook next to the Consumer IR port.
The Toshiba U405 has a nice 13.3-inch widescreen display that features Toshiba’s TruBright TFT LCD technology running at 1280 x 800 WXGA resolution. It can’t compete with Sony’s XBRITE screens found higher end VAIO series, but it has good brightness, color saturation and a decent viewing angle.
There are two flavors of pre-configured Toshiba Satellite U405 series notebooks: the U405D running on an AMD Turion processor, and the U405 models running on Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Our Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 comes with the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor running at 2.10GHz. This CPU has 3MB L2 cache and an 800MHz front side bus. The notebook comes with 3GB memory (PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2) and the max is 4GB. All models in the U405 family have integrated graphics (not a surprise for notebooks in this price range). The U405 has the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. The U405-S2830 comes with a 250GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400rpm speed) and if you need something larger, the U405-S2854 offers a 320 gig HDD. The Toshiba comes with a side-opening (right side) DVD SuperMulti (+/- double layer) drive with Labelflash supporting up to 11 formats.
We were actually quite impressed by the benchmark numbers. If you compare them with Toshiba’s multimedia line of notebooks like the Toshiba Qosmio F45, you will see that the performance of the U405 is comparable to or even faster than the Qosmio on all fronts except graphics (because the Qosmio F450AV425 has dedicated graphics while the Satellite U405 has only integrated graphics). Please note that the Windows Vista Experience Index rating uses the lowest number in the index for the overall score. We tested DVD watching, gaming and Internet content streaming, and the Satellite U405 did reasonably well in all tests. Games like Rise of Nations and Age of Empires III ran smoothly, but we couldn’t get Battlefield 2 to install and run (it wants dedicated graphics).
Like the Toshiba Qosmio F45, the Satellite U405-S2830 comes with the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN (802.11a/g/n) that has excellent performance. The notebook got a very strong signal from our N router, and streaming video/movie over WiFi was smooth and speedy. The range is also very good: we tested it from at least 30 feet away through several walls, and the reception still rated “Excellent”. The Toshiba also has built-in Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR which enhanced the speed of data transfer. The notebook has a standard set of ports including 3 USB 2.0 ports (two on the left side and one on the right side), 10/100 Ethernet LAN port and modem port on the right side, i.LINK IEEE-1394 port on the left, ExpressCard slot (ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54) and a security lock slot on the right. There is also a VGA monitor port on the left for plugging the notebook into an external monitor or projector. The cooling vent dispatches heat through the openings on the left of the notebook and keeps the bottom from heating up too much. Though when you play a DVD or a game, you definitely don’t want to put anything that’s heat sensitive next the cooling vent: it can make the desk surface feel a bit too hot to touch.
There is also a 5-in-1 media card reader that reads SD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MMC and xD Picture Cards. For higher end audio out, the Toshiba has an S/P DIF jack (shared with the 3.5mm analog stereo audio jack) next to the mic out jack.
The Toshiba U405 comes with Windows Vista Home Edition SP1 (32-bit) that’s upgradable to Windows Vista Ultimate if you wish. Toshiba is very good at bundling its own utility software and tools and the U405 benefits from that tradition. The notebook includes Toshiba’s own DVD Player, Disc Creator, Bluetooth stack, speech system and more. The Toshiba U405 comes with some free games and online games from WildTangent. Third-party software included are Microsoft Works 9.0, Sun Java 2 Runtime, Adobe Acrobat reader, Ulead DVD movieFactory and Google tools. There are also some useful trial software including MS Office Home and Student 2007 Edition (60-day trial) and a trial version Norton 360 All-In-One Security. All current Toshiba notebook models come with recovery discs to restore the notebook to factory settings, and there is no recovery partition on the hard drive of the U405.
In addition to a fingerprint scanner, the Toshiba U405 also comes with face recognition security that’s finding its way into several of today’s notebooks including the ASUS U6 series. The face recognition uses the web cam to capture your face and the notebook can use it as a “human password” to login. The technology worked very well on the Toshiba U405 in decently lit areas.
Is there bloatware on the Toshiba U405? You bet! From Napster to shutterfly photo print services, from eMusic Music download (can you say redundant?) to Vongo movie services, the Toshiba is loaded with bloatware and its desktop is cluttered with useless shortcut icons. We’ve run out words to describe our displeasure at spending hours upon hours to dispose of bloatware and their shortcut icons on today’s notebooks. Other manufacturers like Dell and Sony have responded to the wave of editorial and consumer revulsion and reduced the junk—follow suit soon, Toshiba!
The Toshiba U405 comes with a 4800mAh Li-Ion battery (6-cell), and if you need more power, you can get an extended battery (9-cell) or consider the U405-S2833 which has a 7200mAh battery. The notebook uses Vista’s three power settings: Balanced, Power Saving and High Performance. The Balanced setting is quite good and doesn’t reduce the display brightness and notebook’s speed by much from the high performance setting. The notebook lasted us about 3.5 hours when performing tasks such as working on documents and looking through photos with WiFi turned off. Watching a DVD, the battery lasted about 2 hours and 45 minutes (Balanced power setting). Windows Vista behaves much better in dealing with hibernation than XP, and the Toshiba U405 went into and came out of hibernation gracefully. The notebook charges reasonably fast, and the power supply is a world AC adapter (100-240V/50-60Hz) that weighs 0.77 lbs.
The Toshiba U405 has the right balance between size and power, and has plenty of ports for working with various accessories. For the price, the Toshiba offers very good specs and the hardware benchmarks very well. If you’re a student who is looking for a notebook that can do your school work but is small enough to carry around the campus, the 13.3-inch size and the mid-level price are very attractive. It’s not as thin as the ultra-lights like the MacBook Air or the Sony Z series, but you are paying half of the price or even less.
Pro: The redesign gives the notebook a modern update. The shiny surface and the fusion cover look sleek. Bright display with good viewing angle. The notebook has plenty of horsepower, memory and a fast hard drive. Plenty of ports should handle most common (USB, external monitor). Good software bundle.
Display: 13.3” diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display at 1280 x 800 native resolution (WXGA). Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB-358MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory.
Software:Windows Vista Home Edition (32-bit) Operating System. Microsoft Works 9, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Toshiba DVD Player and Disc Creator software, Ulead DVD MovieFactory and Google tools. Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer included. Also fingerprint and face recognition software for security. Recovery software included on recovery media. Trial software includes: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Edition (60-day trial) and Norton All-in-One security.
This review notebook has a 14.1" WXGA matte screen, you can get a BrightView glossy screen of the same resolution. I prefer the matte screen for a work environment and for a business notebook. Some people that like to see greater contrast and bolder colors will go with the glossy BrightView though. The screen brightness is good, it"s certainly not the brightest screen out there and not on par with a Sony or Fujitsu screen, but it"s adequate. There are no complaints to be had regarding light leakage, the screen is evenly lit. As usual with notebook screens, the vertical viewing angles are not so great while the horizontal viewing angles are decent.
The HP Compaq 6510b offers a nice blend of good performance and a reasonable price. The build quality is good, but not great. The look is clean and stylish, but it won"t win any awards. The screen quality is good, with no complaints, but it won"t outshine some of the nicer Sony, Apple or Fujitsu displays out there. The ports selection is all you really need for a business notebook, and the keyboard is nice to use. The 6510b isn"t the lightest or thinnest 14.1" screen notebook out there, but you"d be paying more if it were. In other words, HP has designed a well rounded portable notebook that"s not quite on the cutting edge with any of its aspects, but it is reliable and leaves little to complain about -- exactly what you"d want in a budget business notebook.

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has developed the world"s first large flexible liquid crystal display, opening the way to the display of images on curved screens and moving toward the long-term goal of foldable LCDs. The new display is a full color, 8.4-inch super-slim low-temperature polysilicon active-matrix TFT LCD supporting SVGA resolution.
Toshiba leads the industry in low-temperature polysilicon technology and the latest announcement adds to the versatility of displays already known for superior brightness and fast refresh rates. The flexible LCD brings new potentialities to design, while its super-slim profile--less than 0.4mm--achieves a weight under 20g - a quarter to a fifth that of present low temperature polysilicon TFT LCDs. The flexibility of the screen also increases its resistance to shock.
Toshiba realized the flexible display by developing technology to achieve an extremely thin glass substrate, the layer on which TFTs are formed and attaching it to a flexible sheet. Displays using this technology can be manufactured at the normal process temperature. The new display can be flexed in all directions and bent to form a curve with a radius of curvature (R) as high as 20 cm. Other approaches to a flexible LCD have followed the approach of forming transistors on a flexible plastic substrate at an extremely low temperature, which did not achieve sufficient transistor quality or reliability.
Applications for the new display will include TVs with curved screens that can be mounted in publics and information displays in trains or buses. Toshiba is now developing mass production technology for the display and Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. expects to launch commercial products after fiscal year 2004.
