volvo xc60 tft display made in china
Spectacular spy shots from the facelifted 2013 Volvo XC60 SUV. Since Geely is the owner all new Volvo models have to go to China for final approval. Geely also plans to make this XC60 in China, local production will most likely start in 2014. The 2013 Volvo XC60 gets a completely new face with a wider grille and another not-too-pretty grille-kinda-thing under the bumper.
The current Volvo XC60 is imported into China, competing against the locally made BMW X3 and Audi Q5, that are some 20% cheaper. Still, the Volvo is popular, especially with the hot 300hp T6 six-cylinder turbo. Price in China ranges from 389.900 yuan to 659.900 yuan.
ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (March 27, 2013) - Volvo unveiled a major renewal of its S60 and XC60 models at the New York Auto Show, amounting to the most extensive development of existing models in the Scandinavian automaker"s history.
"We have focused on quality and attention to detail in order to give these dynamic models a major boost and sharpen their competitiveness," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Group. He continues: "The S60 and XC60 are our best-selling models in several important markets. We have been listening very carefully to our customers in order to make improvements that ensure that we make these successful cars more attractive."
Supportive seats that ensure a comfortable after a long trip have been a Volvo strength for decades. The buyer of a new S60 or XC60 can now specify a new sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver"s car.
The new integrated tailpipes - standard on all engines for the S60 and XC60 - are the physical and visual link to the technically advanced engines. But it"s not just about beautiful design: the designers have had to cope with the fact that at operating temperature, the tailpipes have to remain perfectly in place despite the exhaust system expanding in length by up to 25mm. This is another example of true Scandinavian precision engineering.
The XC60 also benefits from an interior upgrade. The new features include new wood inlays, a new headliner, textile B-pillars and the silk metal frames around the air vents and light controls. The refined XC60 has a commanding driving position supported by generous ground clearance and the class-leading chassis. The XC60 is designed to feel every bit as nimble and agile as a standard sedan.
Corner Traction Control now comes as standard. This torque vectoring system helps the driver avoid understeer by applying just the right amount of brake force to the inner wheels while powering the outer wheels when accelerating out of a corner. With All Wheel Drive, the XC60 becomes an extremely capable vehicle on any road, in any kind of weather.
It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the 7-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter! Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or the driver"s mobile phone.
The user has access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, Internet radio (TuneIn Radio) with thousands of channels from all over the world, on-line (Google) Map and Search, Embedded Connected 3D navigation with online traffic info, Free Parking locator, weather information, a number of native and web applications, App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo retailer locator.
The Adaptive Digital Display is now available in the new S60 and XC60. This active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display takes the interaction between car and driver to a new dimension, always displaying the most important information in any given situation.
The Eco theme features green background illumination, designed to create an environmentally inspired look. An Eco meter is displayed on the left. The current and accumulated fuel consumption figures are displayed - and the driver is rewarded with a green E light when eco-driving is optimal.
The Performance theme has red background illumination, creating a sporty atmosphere. In the center, a rev counter scale replaces the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions. Vehicle speed is shown digitally in the center of the display. The right display includes a power meter - a gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much power is being used at any given moment in time.
The three-spoke steering wheels can now be accompanied with paddle shifters for all S60 models and XC60 T6. They turn the automatic box into a manual with the benefit of shifting gear with both hands on the wheel. The paddle shifters give the enthusiastic driver an additional edge, particularly when powering round twisty roads.
This bolsters the sporty impression of the T6 and also produces fantastic acceleration results. Zero to 60 improves 0.2 seconds on the S60 T6 AWD - from 5.8 to 5.6 on model year 2014 with AQS - while the XC60 T6 AWD runs 0.4 seconds faster - 6.9 to 6.5 seconds on model year 2014 with AQS - compared to model year 2013.
Cars equipped with a rain sensor can now benefit from an electrically heated windscreen for rapid de-icing on cold winter days. The S60 and XC60 are also available with outer rear view mirrors with auto dim. Using chromatic glass, the mirrors automatically dim to avoid glare from other traffic, just like the inner rear view mirror.
IntelliSafe is Volvo"s blanket name for all active safety systems, and Volvo"s world-first City Safety technology plays an important part. Fitted as standard, this advanced safety system works at speeds of up to 31 mph. All models can also get Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake, which watches out for people walking into the car"s path, as well as the new and groundbreaking Cyclist Detection with full auto brake, which detects and automatically brakes for cyclists swerving out in front of the car.
The S60 and XC60 can also be specified with the enhanced Blind Sport Information System (BLIS), which is now radar-based. The technology can also monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car, while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car.
"As the leader in automotive safety, we have reduced the risk of being involved in an accident or being injured in one of our latest car models by about 50 percent since the year 2000. By continuously introducing new preventive and protective systems, we keep moving toward our safety vision that nobody should die or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020," says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group.
On the exterior, Volvo"s best-selling model, the XC60, gets a more urban twist. The redesigned front features a new hood shape that emphasises the wide, confident look. The sporty feel is emphasised by new, comfortable sport seats. Initially, the new XC60 is available with three engines from the all-new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family: The 306 hp petrol turbo T6, the 245 hp T5 and the turbo diesel D4 with 181 hp. A new 8-speed automatic gearbox contributes to a refined drive and excellent fuel economy.
The XC60 also benefits from an interior upgrade. The new features include new wood inlays, a new headliner, textile B-pillars and the silk metal frames around the air vents and light controls.
The XC60 buyer can also specify a new sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver"s car. It has great hugging side support all the way from the thighs to the shoulders, so the seat keeps the driver firmly in position when cornering fast.
There are several other examples of the attention to detail in the new XC60. The previously visible washer nozzles have been relocated out of sight under the bonnet.
The XC60 R-Design features a unique face with a redesigned, dynamic, expressive nose. The frameless Tech Matte Black grille has high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal and a refined R-Design emblem. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes. The XC60 R-Design is available with all-new 20-inch Ixion II wheels.
The new sport seats come as standard in the XC60 R-Design. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. The embroidered R-design logo with a blue ‘R" confirms the sporty aura. By blending inlays with a perforated look, black leather and contrasting stitching, the design team has created an R-design interior with all the details in perfect harmony, crowned by the black headliner. The new stainless steel tread plate with a bright blue ‘R" in the emblem is another exquisite detail.
The refined XC60 has a commanding driving position supported by generous ground clearance and the class-leading chassis. The XC60 is designed to feel every bit as nimble and agile as a standard height road car.
With All Wheel Drive, the XC60 becomes an extremely capable vehicle on any road, in any kind of weather. The optional Hill Descent Control boosts this capability by automatically controlling the car"s speed when driving down steep slopes.
The XC60 R-Design chassis is also stiffer than the standard car and has more dynamic driving properties - without compromising ride comfort. The shock absorber springs and anti-roll bars are adjusted and tuned to be firmer and more balanced. The result is improved control and a sportier, road-hugging drive.
The new T6 Drive-E engine has an output of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features a class-leading combination of a compressor and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end gives the engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 7.3 l/100 km (169 g/km) in the XC60.
The five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel has 215 hp and 420 Nm of torque. The XC60 D5 with manual gearbox and All Wheel Drive has fuel consumption at 5.3 l/100 km (CO2 emissions at 139 g/km). The equivalent figures with the automatic are 6.4 l/100 km (169 g/km).
Fuel consumption in an XC60 with manual gearbox is down to 4.5 l/100 km, translating into CO2 emissions at 117 g/km. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 4.7 l/100 km (124 g/km).
The automatic D3 (136 hp) version of the new Volvo XC60 now comes with fuel consumption at 6.0 l/100 km (159 g/km). The figures with the manual gearbox are 5.3 l/100 km (139 g/km).

Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.
The Volvo On Call system can be combined with the Bluetooth mobile phone service. The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free phone conversations as well as music streaming from a preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire range.
A mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call.
Owners of all new models with Volvo On Call can download the application that opens up a range of connectivity possibilities. The mobile app is free and downloaded via the iPhone and Android application stores. The app is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance.
For 2014, Volvo treats its award-winning XC60 small premium utility to the most extensive refresh since its introduction four years ago. Completely new styling from the windshield forward sets the stage for a dramatic entry. Inside the cabin, the XC60 receives distinctive new design elements, luxury touches and convenience features. Innovative safety technologies make their debut while a new roster of available upgrades take the XC60 to the next level of elegance and sophistication.
The changes begin on the outside, where the XC60 sports a new hood, front fenders and fascia that emphasize a wider and more confident appearance. Redesigned headlights flank a bold new grille sporting a larger Volvo Ironmark. Other changes include a new lower front spoiler with bright trim, vertically mounted LED daytime running lights, new front and rear skid plate décor and integrated exhaust pipe design. New 18-inch Pan alloy wheels are standard on 3.2 trim levels while the top-line T6 R-Design gains new 20-inch Ixion II alloys.
The XC60 is Volvo"s first crossover to offer sporty steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Standard on T6 AWD and R-Design, these paddle shifters let the driver shift manually with both hands on the steering wheel. All XC60s gain a new shift knob for the floor-mounted shifter featuring piano black background with illuminated symbols for ease of viewing in the dark.
Among the XC60"s list of interior upgrades is a new standard 3-spoke steering wheel, Off Black dash top, wood décor trim on front door panels, cloth-covered B-pillars, metal trim around air vents, silver décor frame for the headlight module, Quartz headliner, new front door sill plates and a metal threshold for the cargo area.
Every XC60 receives a new high-tech instrument cluster. The base 3.2 gains an easy to read analog style cluster. A new adaptive digital display employing Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology is standard on 3.2 Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum trims levels plus all T6 AWD and R-Design models. With this cluster, drivers can custom-tailor the display to suit their needs by selecting from three different themes:
Performance has red background illumination for a more dynamic look. A tachometer replaces the speedometer while vehicle speed is shown digitally. The right display includes a power meter gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much is being used at any given moment.
Setting the Stage for a Dynamic Drive All XC60s gain new Corner Traction Control (CTC) by torque vectoring. This technology made its debut on the Volvo S60 as a further refinement of Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC). This system makes it easier to smoothly maintain the desired line on winding roads and on wet surfaces. When driving into a curve, the brakes are applied to the inner driven wheel while more power is transmitted to the outer driven wheel. This enables the driver to take the curve more tightly while reducing any tendency to understeer. The driver can accelerate out of the curve while retaining confidence inspiring grip of the road.
Additional safety advancements are included with the new Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) Package offered on all models. This package includes BLIS, front and rear park assist, and new Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) and Lane Change Merge Aid (LCMA). The system is based on radar technology installed behind the rear wheels and will detect traffic from a longer distance than the previous BLIS system. A larger detection area provides the capability of informing the driver of rapidly approaching vehicles. LCMA utilizes two levels of LED lights mounted in the A-pillar. While CTA uses radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor traffic when backing out of a parking space, warning the driver of approaching traffic via a visual alert and audio signal. A Technology Package, optional on all XC60s, receives an enhanced detection capability feature. Cyclist Detection has been added to Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. The package also includes Active High Beam that automatically switches the headlights to low beam when opposite traffic is detected, Road Sign Information (RSI) displays traffic speed signs for the driver on the instrument cluster based on the Forward Looking Camera (FLC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
The XC60 was the first vehicle equipped with City Safety. This advanced technology is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 31 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. XC60 offers three levels of performance to satisfy a wide range of buyers. Those seeking the greatest value will be attracted to the XC60 3.2. Its naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine provides 240 horsepower with ULEV II emissions rating or 230 horsepower with PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating. Front-wheel drive is standard while Volvo"s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction is optional.
The midrange XC60 T6 AWD offers an impressive blend of outstanding performance and value. Output for its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. All-Wheel-Drive with Instant Traction is standard on all turbocharged XC60s.
At the top of the XC60 lineup is the T6 AWD R-Design. This model targets enthusiasts with a substantial performance upgrade. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder delivers 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. The R-Design"s chassis employs stronger damping and a more direct steering gear that allows the driver to benefit from more alert vehicle behavior and more precise communication with the road surface.
The R-Design also endows the XC60 a bolder appearance. Standard features include new 20-inch Ixion II alloy wheels, color-matched lower body moldings and a metallic-themed interior with unique aluminum inserts in the steering wheel, door moldings and the iconic center stack. It also maintains typical R-design attributes like silk metal finish outside mirror housings, trim moldings, skid plates, twin chrome tailpipes and the R-Design logo embossed in the front seat backrests and displayed on the grille.
XC60"s standard Volvo Sensus system lets drivers manage information from the audio unit, navigation system (if equipped) and other functions, displaying them onto a seven-inch high-definition color monitor in the upper part of the center console. It allows the driver to explore the high-tech features of the vehicle and personalize them to suit his or her needs.
Volvo"s trim level strategy offers customers the flexibility to add additional features. Buyers can still select the XC60 3.2, T6 AWD and R-Design without a trim level if desired. For 2014, the Premier trim level, offered exclusively for the 3.2, gains an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror and adaptive digital display. Premier Plus adds rear park assist camera and quick-fold front passenger seat. Platinum receives auto-dimming power-retractable exterior mirrors and interior accent lighting. The Platinum trim offered for all three XC60 models features the Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby® Pro Logic® II Surround Sound, 12 premium speakers and 650 watts. Also included is a Navigation System with real time traffic, remote control and map care plus a rear park assist camera.
New stand-alone options include active dual xenon headlights with washers for 3.2 and T6 AWD, Urban Wood inlays for these models, an accessory prep cable, heated front seats (also available with the Climate Package) and 20-inch Avior alloy wheels for T6 AWD. The XC60 was the first Volvo with standard HD Radio that updates radio signals to digital quality. FM broadcast quality equals the level of a typical CD while AM broadcast quality rivals the prior level of FM. The XC60"s standard high performance sound system includes BluetoothTM streaming audio, and AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPodsTM, memory sticks and other media players.
Volvo’s dynamic XC60 offers a full spectrum of performance possibilities for 2015 with the widest array of powertrain choices since its introduction. With the debut of Drive-E technology, Volvo introduces an all-new engine family, a new transmission and ECO+ fuel-saving functionality. Drive-E delivers remarkably efficient operation without compromising the driving experience. It"s the latest evolution of Volvo’s small premium utility following last year’s extensive styling changes, increased luxury, enhanced convenience and safety innovations.
The lineup begins with the XC60 T5 Drive-E equipped with a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with direct-injection and front-wheel drive. Volvo’s R&D engineers in Sweden employed advanced fuel-saving techniques when developing Drive-E engines including friction reduction, advanced boosting and combustion, thermal management and variable valve timing. These efforts result in 240 horsepower and 258 lbs.-ft. of torque with mpg ratings of 24 city, 31 highway and 27 combined.
Moving up to the XC60 T6 Drive-E delivers even greater performance potential. This version of the 2.0-liter engine is fitted with both a turbocharger and a supercharger. The mechanically linked supercharger starts to function immediately at low revs while the turbo kicks in when airflow builds up. The combo provides linear output that offers the sensation of a larger, naturally aspirated engine yet with reduced weight and improved economy. The bottom line is 302 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque plus mpg fuel economy ratings of 22 city, 30 highway and 25 combined.
The XC60 lineup continues to offer models fitted with Volvo’s signature All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™. For midyear 2015.5, the new T5 AWD with its turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine developing 240 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque replaces the previous 3.2 AWD naturally aspirated model. A standard six-speed “Geartronic” automatic transmission teams with All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction.
Moving up to XC60 T6 AWD results in an impressive blend of outstanding performance and value. Output for its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. All-Wheel-Drive with Instant Traction and six-speed automatic are also standard.
At the top of the XC60 lineup is the T6 AWD R-Design. This model targets enthusiasts with a substantial performance upgrade. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder delivers 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. The R-Design’s chassis employs stronger damping and a more direct steering gear that allows the driver to benefit from more alert vehicle behavior and more precise communication with the road surface.
The R-Design also delivers a bolder appearance. Standard features include 20-inch “Ixion II” alloy wheels, color-matched lower body moldings and a metallic-themed interior with unique aluminum inserts in the steering wheel, door moldings and the iconic center stack. It also maintains typical R-design attributes like silk metal finish outside mirror housings, trim moldings, skid plates, twin chrome tailpipes and the R-Design displayed on the grille.
XC60 is Volvo"s first crossover to offer sporty steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Standard on T6 and R-Design models, these paddle shifters let the driver shift manually with both hands on the steering wheel.
Last year’s design refresh graced XC60 with completely new styling from the windshield forward. Changes included a new hood, front fenders and fascia that emphasize a wider and more confident appearance. Redesigned headlights flank a bolder grille sporting a larger Volvo Ironmark. Other enhancements included a lower front spoiler with bright trim, vertically mounted LED daytime running lights, front and rear skid plate décor and integrated exhaust pipe design.

It allows the driver to explore the high-tech features of the vehicle and personalize them to suit his or her needs.
Volvo On Call is a new standard sophisticated telematics system that includes a driver-activated SOS button, automatic collision alert and GPS location tracking by emergency service operators. If an airbag or seatbelt pre-tensioner is deployed, emergency assistance is notified even if the driver is unable to press the button.
Wi-Fi Hotspot uses the standard 3G-based Volvo On Call plus the car’s regular rooftop antenna giving the driver access to cloud-based Volvo services without an on-board smartphone. The driver can create a Wi-Fi hotspot inside the car so passengers can connect their smartphone, laptop or tablet to the Internet.
New Sensus Navigation, standard on Premier and Platinum trims and all T6 models, integrates all navigation functions into the car. The system is easy to use, without taking one’s attention from traffic. Unlike using a smart phone as a navigation device, the navigation screen is displayed on the standard in-dash 7-inch monitor. Sensus Navigation has improved graphics including 3D imaging, improved voice recognition, new routing options and built-in apps.
XC60 customers seeking additional luxury and convenience features can select packages and individual options. The new Convenience Package, standard on Platinum and available on all other trims, includes HomeLink, digital compass, cargo cover, grocery bag holder, 12V power outlet in the cargo area, power retractable outside mirrors and power folding rear head restraints.
Rockleigh, NJ (Feb. 19, 2013) - Volvo will debut a major renewal of its current model lineup at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show next month, amounting to the most extensive development of existing models in the Scandinavian automaker"s history. Featured among them are its flagship S80 sedan and XC70 crossover.
"The new features in the new Volvo S80 and XC70 are based on our human-centric approach, which has been a Volvo hallmark for more than 85 years. They take the elegant sophistication of our largest models to a new level," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Group. He continues: "We pave the way for our future model line-up by bringing the models visually closer to each other. The renewal is one of the most extensive in our history, with the main focus on improved quality and attention to detail."
A number of new exterior design cues reinforce the sophisticated contemporary presence of the new Volvo S80. The new front and rear bumpers create a ‘stretched" effect to make it look wider and lower. New rectangular Daytime Running Lights at the front give the S80 nose a more contemporary look, while the rounded off classic Volvo lights at the rear visually pull the car down to the ground. The S80 can be fitted with expressive 19-inch wheels without loss of comfort.
It is the attention to detail that gives the S80 its enhanced sophistication. The S80 Inscription comprises an additional palette of upholstery options that gives the customer the opportunity to elevate the interior to Volvo"s most luxurious offering.
It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the 7-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter!
The user has access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, Internet radio (TuneIn Radio) with thousands of channels from all over the world, on-line (Google) Map and Search, Embedded Connected 3D navigation with online traffic info and dangerous zone warnings, Free Parking locator, weather information, a number of native and web applications, App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo retailer locator.
In the centre, a rev counter scale replaces the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions. Vehicle speed is shown digitally in the center of the display. The right display includes a power meter - a gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much power is being used at any given moment in time.
It"s hard to believe the XC60 midsized crossover has only been around since 2010. It actually seems older, really. We feel like we"ve seen them pretty much everywhere since forever, but that"s thanks to their popularity (for a Volvo, anyway). Thankfully, Volvo refreshed it significantly in 2014 and made the fascias more sophisticated and did away with a lot of dark exterior plastics, which made it look cheaper than it was. The current model is on its way out soon since Chinese-owned Volvo is looking to redo much of their lineup -- having started out with a bang with the hot-selling XC90 full-sized SUV.
We never really expect to be wowed by crossovers when it comes to the driving experience. Shy of a Porsche Macan Turbo or a Jaguar F-Pace or even the Mazda CX-9, most CUVs are a bit dull in the driving senses. And though the XC60 doesn"t thrill in the turns or provide exacting steering feel, it does move with authority and provide a modicum of fun for something that"s meant to traverse shopping mall lots and the occasional gravel driveway.
Our T6 Drive-E benefitted from Volvo"s more potent edition of their 2.0-liter turbocharged four, largely because it gets assistance from a supercharger for a healthy 302 horsepower 295 lb-ft of torque. The T6 Drive-E also gets the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic instead of the six-speed automatic that shows up in lesser trims.Ride Quality: Limo-like ride quality. Great seats and good shock absorption. 19-inch Michelin all-season tires ride smoothly.
Though Volvo reworked their XC60 two years ago, they failed to do much with the dated tech, and that"s the biggest chagrin we have for this crossover. It"s just plain old and looks that way. The big keypad in the center stack is convoluted and hard to use. The infotainment system is likewise dated when it comes to controls, despite the fact that its visually appealing and easy to read.
It fares better when it comes to safety. Volvo is synonymous with supreme safety, and the current XC60 is no exception, garnering an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for the 2016 model year. And that comes as no surprise given Volvo"s commitment to being one of the safest brands in the industry.Infotainment Screen Size/Quality: The 7-inch screen is easy to read but is set in a bit too deep, probably to avoid glare. There"s also no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Grrr. At least there"s WiFi.
Safety: The XC60 in this trim pretty much has it all from smart cruise control to pedestrian and cyclist detection. The expensive tech package is worth it thanks to collision detection with full auto brake. The child booster seats are a boon for parents of small ones.
We won"t call it beautiful, but Volvo is more about sophistication and sensibility rather than visual punch (at least with the older generation cars). We like the revised fascias that give the Volvo a bit more presence, and the body is well-sculpted like any modern CUV should be. We like the fact that Volvo eschews busyness in their design language, and even when this car is replaced with the next-gen version, it will still look handsome, especially in charcoal gray.Front: The wide Volvo grille isn"t overly tall like so many other cars today, keeping it clean with simple headlights and a crisp lower fascia.
Volvo takes the time to do their Contour seats just about perfectly, and we wonder why other automakers can"t do as good of a job with support and bolstering. If you"re going to take a long trip in a car, these seats are pretty much perfect. We laud Volvo for not sacrificing comfort for aesthetics, though these seats are pretty attractive.
Despite an odd storage compartment behind the waterfall center stack, the rest of the Volvo works well in the storage department. Good door pockets, a fairly capacious center armrest and good cupholders ensure easy gear stowage. Though you likely won"t haul any furniture in the XC60, there"s plenty of space for a weekend road trip behind the second row.Storage: Good storage options, but it"s no Honda Pilot. There wasn"t much we didn"t like except the strange space behind the center stack, which was hard to reach and made it easy to forget that we left things there since you can"t see it directly unless you peer behind it.
You can wait for the 2018 XC60 in hopes that it looks like a small XC90 (which it will), or you can get this one now. It does everything very well--drives comfortably, looks attractive and stores plenty. You"ll just have to be okay with not having great infotainment technology or audio/infotainment/climate controls. It"s a sacrifice but not a huge one since the Volvo XC60 remains very appealing even in its final iteration for this generation.
Families who want a truly safe automobile that"s not high on visual drama and provides great acceleration and four-wheel traction can"t really go wrong with the XC60, especially in the potent and well-outfitted T6 Drive-E.
Standard Features: All-wheel drive with Instant Traction, Touring Chassis with advanced stability control, roll stability control, anti-lock braking system with Ready Alert Brakes, electronic brake distribution and assistance, power assisted rack and pinion steering, 18" alloy wheels with all-season tires, Sensus with integrated 7-inch color LCD monitor, 180W high performance audio system with 8 speakers, in-dash single CD with WMA and MP3 capability, HD Radio / USB & AUX inputs, Bluetooth hands free with audio streaming, SIRIUS Radio with 6-month complimentary subscription, Sensus Connect with 6-month complimentary subscription with unlimited data and in-car WiFi hotspot, Volvo On Call with 6-month complimentary subscription, 10-year emergency crash notification, smart phone apps including engine remote start, City Safety - low speed collision avoidance system, unibody high strength steel safety cage, five 3-point safety belts with pretensioners, inflatable curtain head impact protection, front passenger dual chamber side-impact airbags, driver & front passenger dual stage supplemental restraint system, Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) in driver & passenger seats, security system with back-up battery for siren, child safety locks in rear doors, tire pressure monitoring system, LED daytime running lights, electronic stability control, laminated panoramic roof with power sunshade, leather upholstered seating surfaces, 8-way power front seats with driver 3-position memory, front seat power lumbar support, keyless entry a
