Rockleigh, NJ (Feb. 19, 2013) - Volvo will debut a major renewal of its current model lineup at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show next month, amounting to the most extensive development of existing models in the Scandinavian automaker"s history. Featured among them are its flagship S80 sedan and XC70 crossover.

"The new features in the new Volvo S80 and XC70 are based on our human-centric approach, which has been a Volvo hallmark for more than 85 years. They take the elegant sophistication of our largest models to a new level," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Group. He continues: "We pave the way for our future model line-up by bringing the models visually closer to each other. The renewal is one of the most extensive in our history, with the main focus on improved quality and attention to detail."

A number of new exterior design cues reinforce the sophisticated contemporary presence of the new Volvo S80. The new front and rear bumpers create a ‘stretched" effect to make it look wider and lower. New rectangular Daytime Running Lights at the front give the S80 nose a more contemporary look, while the rounded off classic Volvo lights at the rear visually pull the car down to the ground. The S80 can be fitted with expressive 19-inch wheels without loss of comfort.

It is the attention to detail that gives the S80 its enhanced sophistication. The S80 Inscription comprises an additional palette of upholstery options that gives the customer the opportunity to elevate the interior to Volvo"s most luxurious offering.

It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the 7-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter!

The user has access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, Internet radio (TuneIn Radio) with thousands of channels from all over the world, on-line (Google) Map and Search, Embedded Connected 3D navigation with online traffic info and dangerous zone warnings, Free Parking locator, weather information, a number of native and web applications, App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo retailer locator.

This active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display takes the interaction between car and driver to a new dimension, always displaying the most important information in any given situation.

The Eco theme features green background illumination, designed to create an environmentally inspired look. An Eco meter is displayed on the left. The current and accumulated fuel consumption figures are displayed - and the driver is rewarded with a green E light when eco-driving is optimal.

The Performance theme has red background illumination, creating a sporty atmosphere. In the centre, a rev counter scale replaces the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions. Vehicle speed is shown digitally in the center of the display. The right display includes a power meter - a gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much power is being used at any given moment in time.

"As the leader in automotive safety, we have reduced the risk of being involved in an accident or being injured in one of our latest car models by about 50 percent since the year 2000. By continuously introducing new preventive and protective systems, we keep moving toward our safety vision that nobody should die or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020," says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group.

Rockleigh, NJ (Feb. 19, 2013) - Volvo will debut a major renewal of its S60, XC60 and V60 models at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show next month, amounting to the most extensive development of existing models in the Scandinavian automaker"s history. The V60 is not currently available in the United States.

"We have focused on quality and attention to detail in order to give these dynamic models a major boost and sharpen their competitiveness," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Group. He continues: "The S60 and XC60 are our best-selling models in several important markets. We have been listening very carefully to our customers in order to make improvements that ensure that we make these successful cars more attractive."

Supportive yet comfortable seats that ensure a fresh and relaxed arrival after the longest of journeys have been a Volvo strength for decades. The buyer of a new S60 or XC60 can now specify a new sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver"s car.

The new integrated tailpipes-standard on all engines for the S60 and XC60-the physical and visual link to the technically advanced engines. But it"s not just about beautiful design: the designers have had to cope with the fact that at operating temperature, the tailpipes have to remain perfectly in place despite the exhaust system expanding in length by up to 25mm. This is another example of true Scandinavian precision engineering.

On the exterior, Volvo"s best-selling model, the XC60, gets a more urban twist. The redesigned front features a new hood shape that emphasizes the wide, confident look.

The XC60 also benefits from an interior upgrade. The new features include new wood inlays, a new headliner, textile B-pillars and the silk metal frames around the air vents and light controls.

The refined XC60 has a commanding driving position supported by generous ground clearance and the class-leading chassis. The XC60 is designed to feel every bit as nimble and agile as a standard sedan.

Corner Traction Control now comes as standard. This torque vectoring system helps the driver avoid understeer by applying just the right amount of brake force to the inner wheels while powering the outer wheels when accelerating out of a corner. With All Wheel Drive, the XC60 becomes an extremely capable vehicle on any road, in any kind of weather.

The Adaptive Digital Display is now available in the new S60 and XC60.

In the center, a rev counter scale replaces the speedometer displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions. Vehicle speed is shown digitally in the center of the display. The right display includes a power meter - a gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much power is being used at any given moment in time.

The three-spoke steering wheels can now be accompanied with paddle shifters for all S60 models and XC60 T6. They turn the automatic box into a manual with the benefit of shifting gear with both hands on the wheel. The paddle shifters give the enthusiastic driver an additional edge, particularly when powering round twisty roads.

The technology eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on full beam continuously.

Another innovative option for driving in the dark is the low-speed Cornering Light feature. As an extension of the current Active Bending Light system, it lights up the area the driver is steering towards for safer maneuvering - for instance, when turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night.

Cars equipped with a rain sensor can now benefit from an electrically heated windscreen for rapid de-icing on cold winter days. The S60 and XC60 are also available with outer rear view mirrors with auto dim. Using chromatic glass, the mirrors automatically dim to avoid glare from other traffic, just like the inner rear view mirror.

IntelliSafe is Volvo"s blanket name for all active safety systems, and Volvo"s world-first City Safety technology plays an important part. Fitted as standard, this advanced safety system works at speeds of up to 31 mph. All models can also get Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake, which watches out for people walking into the car"s path.

The S60 and XC60 can also be specified with the enhanced Blind Sport Information System (BLIS), which is now radar-based. The technology can also monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car, while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car.

In the Volvo V40, the driver-centric approach is enhanced with a new, fully graphic instrument cluster that allows the driver to personalise instrument layout and the information provided.

The V40 is available with a new, fully graphic instrument cluster. This active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display brings the interaction between car and driver into a new dimension.

The instrument cluster expresses emotional functionality, always displaying the most important information in any given situation right in front of the driver.

The Eco theme features green background illumination, designed to create an environmentally inspired look. An Eco meter is displayed on the left. The current and accumulated fuel consumption figures are displayed - and the driver is rewarded with a green light when eco-driving is optimal.

The Performance theme has red background illumination, creating a sporty atmosphere. In the centre a tachometer scale replaces the speed scale displayed in the Elegance and Eco versions. Vehicle speed is shown digitally in the centre of the display. The right display includes a power meter - a gauge that informs the driver how much power is available and how much power is being used at any given moment in time.

In Volvo Sensus, all information is presented on a five-inch or seven-inch colour screen in the upper part of the instrument panel. The integrated screen makes it easy for the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road.

"My Car" offers access to a wide range of settings, such as for City Safety, Collision Warning, Pedestrian Detection, Driver Alert System, Active Cruise Control, lighting, door mirrors, climate unit, central locking and audio system.

If the customer chooses a multimedia audio system, Volvo Sensus comes upgraded with the larger seven-inch screen that also displays information and images from the navigation system, phone, reversing camera, DVD player, digital TV and so on.

The Bluetooth connection has been upgraded to allow not only hands-free phone conversations but also music streaming from your preferred Bluetooth-enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range. Integrated navigation with voice commands is available as an option.

The optional navigation system is integrated into Volvo Sensus. The voice control function allows safe and convenient handsfree use. A new feature is the turn-by-turn guidance, which is presented to the driver in the instrument cluster"s centre dial.

The owner of an all-new Volvo V40 can use a mobile application to stay in touch with the parked car via a smart phone. The mobile application is an extension of Volvo On Call, which originally focused on direct access to a call centre in the event of an accident or other emergency.

Car check. The mobile app performs a "health" check of the car; displaying information about lights, brake fluid level, coolant level, oil level and oil pressure.

"The all-new V40 has the most intuitive driver interface ever in a Volvo. We believe that the ultimate luxury is to own a car that fits you, understands you and evolves together with you. You jump in behind the wheel for the first time. You take a look at the dashboard - and you find everything so functional and obvious that you are ready to take off directly."

"We have focused firmly on creating a solution that is easy to handle and that does not distract the driver from focusing on the road. Volvo is one of the few manufacturers to give the driver access to all infotainment functions via controls in the steering wheel. Our aim is that a high percentage of users will be able to handle these functions without having to use the owner"s manual."

"The new mobile application transforms Volvo On Call from an emergency system into a useful convenience feature. We are convinced that our ambitious plans in this connectivity field will help us attract more and more new customers in the future."

Volvo Cars’ capable XC60 is available with four engines from the four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain family: The 306 hp petrol turbo T6, the 245 hp T5 and the turbo diesels D4 with 190 hp and D3 with 150 hp. An 8-speed automatic gearbox contributes to a refined drive and excellent fuel economy.

The design team has increased the new XC60"s road presence by emphasising its horizontal lines, which visually connects the car directly to the road. The car comes with a fully colour coordinated body. The headlamps look very focused and determined, and the horizontal lines on the grille with its chrome bars emphasise the car"s width.

The XC60 is available with 20-inch wheels while keeping the same tyre profile height and ride comfort as with 19-inch wheels. There are new wheels (18” and 19”) and three new exterior colours: Magic Blue, Osmium Grey and Onyx Black.

The XC60 buyer can also specify a sport seat that retains this traditional comfort and makes a perfect addition to the in-command feel of a true driver"s car. It has great hugging side support all the way from the thighs to the shoulders, so the seat keeps the driver firmly in position when cornering at speed.

The XC60 is available with an Inscription Package, with features a complete luxury upgrade of the interior. This includes Inscription Soft Leather upholstery, leather instrument panel, soft leather on the Inscription embroidered head rests, soft leather centre arm rest, unique floor mats and tread plates with Inscription logo.

The XC60 R-Design features a unique face with a dynamic, expressive nose. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes. The XC60 R-Design is available with 20-inch Ixion wheels.

The sport seats come as standard in the XC60 R-Design. It features a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. By blending inlays with a perforated look, black leather and contrasting stitching, the design team has created an R-design interior with all the details in perfect harmony, crowned by the black headliner.

The XC60 is also available in a sailing-inspired Volvo Ocean Race Edition. The model is available in four colours – Ocean Blue II, Bright Silver, Crystal White and Onyx Black (new colour) and features the unique seven-spoke, 18-inch ‘Portunus’ wheel.

The Volvo Ocean Race identification is displayed on the tread plates and front fenders as well as in the start-up sequence on the Infotainment screen. The interior features black or blond leather upholstery with orange stitching and the Volvo Ocean Race logo in orange. The stitching is echoed on the door panels and floor mats, which also have a special rubber tag attached. There is a unique deco inlay, and the load cover is decorated with a Volvo Ocean Race map and logo.

The refined XC60 has a commanding driving position supported by generous ground clearance and the class-leading chassis. The XC60 is designed to feel every bit as nimble and agile as a standard height road car.

With All Wheel Drive, the XC60 becomes an extremely capable vehicle on any road, in any kind of weather. The optional Hill Descent Control boosts this capability by automatically controlling the car"s speed when driving down steep slopes.

The XC60 R-Design chassis is stiffer than the standard car and has more dynamic driving properties - without compromising ride comfort. The shock absorber springs and anti-roll bars are adjusted and tuned to be firmer and more balanced. The result is improved control and a sportier, road-hugging drive.

The T6 Drive-E engine has an output of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features a class-leading combination of a compressor and a turbo charger. Using the supercharger to fill in the bottom end gives the engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 7.0 l/100 km (163 g/km) in the XC60.

The four-cylinder Drive-E engine T5 has 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 6.7 l/100 km (157 g/km) in the XC60. There is also an All Wheel Drive version of the XC60, a 2.5-litre T5 engine with 254 hp.

The five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel now has 220 hp and 420 Nm (420 man, 440 aut) of torque. The XC60 D5 with manual gearbox and All Wheel Drive has fuel consumption at 5.2 l/100km (CO2 emissions at 137 g/km). The equivalent figures with the automatic are 5.7 l/100 km (149 g/km).

The XC60 is also available in All Wheel Drive configuration with two versions of the five-cylinder engine D4, one with 190 hp and 420 Nm of torque and the other with 163 hp and 420 Nm.

The D4 Drive-E turbo diesel now comes with 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features world-first i-ART technology that helps to cut fuel consumption. By featuring pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail, i-ART makes it possible to continuously monitor and adapt fuel injection per combustion in each of the four cylinders. Fuel consumption in an XC60 D4 with manual gearbox is down to 4.5 l/100 km, translating into CO2 emissions at 117 g/km. Fuel consumption with new 8-speed automatic is 4.7 l/100 km (124 g/km).

The Adaptive Digital Display uses an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display to bring the driver personalised information. There are three themes to choose from: Elegance, Eco and Performance.

The Digital Display theme colours are also echoed in the connected infotainment system Sensus Connect. It features a user interface with a number of innovative functions offering customers a fully connected experience.

The brand new app Connected Service Booking is only the first step in making the dealer workshop fully integrated into the digital eco-system. The car will not only tell the driver when it’s time for service but also suggest an appointment at the Volvo dealership.

One of the most widely appreciated features related to the Sensus offer, Volvo On Call, allows Volvo drivers to communicate directly with their car via a smartphone application to lock, unlock, check fuel levels, pre-heat, pre-cool, locate and check mileage on the car.

For 2015 Volvo On Call will be updated, adding a completely new graphical user interface, enhanced send to car capabilities, diagnostics views and smartwatch support for Android Wear, Apple Watch, iPad support and also voice control via Cortana for Windows Phone.

The Active High Beam Control eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on high beam continuously.

New advanced software, including more rapid vision processing, made it possible to extend Volvo Cars" detection and auto brake technology to cover certain cyclist situations as well.

The XC60 features a City Safety system that is active at speeds up to 50 km/h. The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops - or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast.

Another innovative option for driving in the dark is the low-speed Cornering Light feature. As an extension of the current Active Bending Light system, it lights up the area the driver is steering towards for safer manoeuvring.

The XC60 offers a radar-based Blind Sport Information System (BLIS). The technology can monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 m behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides.

Road Sign Information supports the driver by displaying road signs in the instrument display. Road Sign Information can be combined with the Speed Alert function, which provides the driver with a visual warning in the speedometer if the speed limit is exceeded.

Therefore it’s a symbolic and not just pretty backdrop for the vehicle we’re driving – the latest Volvo XC60. The Swedish company barely survived a rather dismal rule under Ford, their product line dwindling until they were barely eking out an existence. Salvation came in the form of Chinese automaker Geely, under whom Volvo has enjoyed at least a renaissance if not a return to autonomy.

The XC60 and the XC90 crossovers helped keep Volvo afloat during the lean times. Under Geely’s ownership a new generation of vehicles based on the Scalable Product Architecture was developed, and the first of those, the 2016 XC90, won North America’s Truck of the Year award. Then came the S90 sedan, which was also well-received, and Volvo’s profits tripled. By 2018, they’ll open their first US factory in North Carolina, and hope to sell more than 800,000 vehicles by 2020.

And now, Volvo’s compact XC60 is the fourth vehicle to join the next-generation lineup. The second-generation XC60 is one of Volvo’s top sellers – and the best-selling crossover in Europe – despite having languished as a decade-old design in this red-hot, super-competitive segment. Despite obvious similarities to its larger sibling, including shared powertrains, Volvo insists their new compact crossover isn’t just a pared-down XC90. The theme is “inspired confidence, versus the XC90’s relaxed confidence,” said chassis lead engineer Egbert Bakker.

The two vehicles share modular platforms and powertrains, but the XC60 is part of their strategy to expand their demographic with more aggressive exterior styling, and more engaging driving dynamics. Volvo predicts it will be a high-conquest vehicle, with 60 percent of its potential buyers being new to the brand.

A more raked A-pillar allowed the nose to be lengthened, imparting a racier look to the XC60’s profile. The wider platform not only imparts a sportier stance, but adds length and width to cabin space. Lines are clean and crisp, culminating in a tidy rear end framed by large vertical tail lamps. Overall, it’s a quietly handsome, refined look that should remain fresh without any overt styling flourishes.

Underhood are the same engines found in the XC90: the T5 turbo-charged four-cylinder producing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque; the T6 turbo and super-charged four-cylinder making 316 hp and 295 lb-ft; and the T8, which is basically a T6 mated to a pair of electric motors and a lithium-ion battery to produce 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. Although a front-wheel-drive T5 will follow in other markets, all XC60s offered in Canada will be Borg-Warner (Haldex) all-wheel drive only.

Of course, safety has long been Volvo’s mantra, their “Vision 2020” statement claiming that “by 2020, no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car”.

While thoroughly impractical for families, pets and Canadian winters, the creamy leather combined with the panoramic sunroof imparted a light and airy, ethereal feel to the cabin. The premium crossover segment is a tough arena with such competitors as Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar F-Pace et al. and the XC60 Inscription raises the bar for interior quality.

There’s a simplicity to the instrumentation that’s quite compelling, although the vertical iPad-style interface has a bit of a learning curve to master. Between the gauges is a customizable TFT display, and the driver can choose to have navigation, entertainment, fuel, or other information at a glance. Worth noting is the head-up display (HUD), which was clearly visible through polarized sunglasses, relaying navigation instructions, speed limits and even radar camera warnings.

Not only is it lovely, but the cabin is an exceedingly quiet place to be. On the busy motorways, wind, noise and vibration were kept to a minimum, and the engine was so quiet we wondered if there was an active noise cancellation system employed – there isn’t. The chassis makes use of plenty of high-strength steel and noise-absorbing insulation. While base models are equipped with a double-wishbone front and integral-link rear suspension augmented with a horizontal composite leaf spring, ours boasted the optional $2,350 Air Suspension with driver-selectable active dampers.

We enjoyed some fast-paced cornering in the foothills beneath Monserrat, where the XC60’s firm yet supple suspension kept it stable through the twists, yet comfortable over harsh pavement. Steering is accurate with good, on-centre feel, and there’s enough power from the T6 turbo to propel the 2,500 kg vehicle quite nicely – and with both turbo- and super-charger working together there’s next to no discernible lag. Observed fuel consumption was 11.5 L/100 km over about 200 km of mixed driving – predominantly with Sport Mode employed. More parsimonious drivers have the option of using “Eco Mode” to keep the fuel numbers down.

While it certainly feels more playful than its larger sibling, the XC60 doesn’t have the truly engaging performance dynamics of the Porsche Macan GTS. It’s more competent than actually sporty.

The XC60’s $45,900 buy-in makes it one of the best values in its segment, but add on some options and the price soars as quickly as any of its premium German competitors. While Volvo predicts the T6 Inscription should be the volume seller, the Momentum’s low price and high list of standard safety and comfort features make it an equally compelling option.

It"s hard to believe the XC60 midsized crossover has only been around since 2010. It actually seems older, really. We feel like we"ve seen them pretty much everywhere since forever, but that"s thanks to their popularity (for a Volvo, anyway). Thankfully, Volvo refreshed it significantly in 2014 and made the fascias more sophisticated and did away with a lot of dark exterior plastics, which made it look cheaper than it was. The current model is on its way out soon since Chinese-owned Volvo is looking to redo much of their lineup -- having started out with a bang with the hot-selling XC90 full-sized SUV.

We never really expect to be wowed by crossovers when it comes to the driving experience. Shy of a Porsche Macan Turbo or a Jaguar F-Pace or even the Mazda CX-9, most CUVs are a bit dull in the driving senses. And though the XC60 doesn"t thrill in the turns or provide exacting steering feel, it does move with authority and provide a modicum of fun for something that"s meant to traverse shopping mall lots and the occasional gravel driveway.

Our T6 Drive-E benefitted from Volvo"s more potent edition of their 2.0-liter turbocharged four, largely because it gets assistance from a supercharger for a healthy 302 horsepower 295 lb-ft of torque. The T6 Drive-E also gets the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic instead of the six-speed automatic that shows up in lesser trims.Ride Quality: Limo-like ride quality. Great seats and good shock absorption. 19-inch Michelin all-season tires ride smoothly.

Though Volvo reworked their XC60 two years ago, they failed to do much with the dated tech, and that"s the biggest chagrin we have for this crossover. It"s just plain old and looks that way. The big keypad in the center stack is convoluted and hard to use. The infotainment system is likewise dated when it comes to controls, despite the fact that its visually appealing and easy to read.

It fares better when it comes to safety. Volvo is synonymous with supreme safety, and the current XC60 is no exception, garnering an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for the 2016 model year. And that comes as no surprise given Volvo"s commitment to being one of the safest brands in the industry.Infotainment Screen Size/Quality: The 7-inch screen is easy to read but is set in a bit too deep, probably to avoid glare. There"s also no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Grrr. At least there"s WiFi.

Safety: The XC60 in this trim pretty much has it all from smart cruise control to pedestrian and cyclist detection. The expensive tech package is worth it thanks to collision detection with full auto brake. The child booster seats are a boon for parents of small ones.

We won"t call it beautiful, but Volvo is more about sophistication and sensibility rather than visual punch (at least with the older generation cars). We like the revised fascias that give the Volvo a bit more presence, and the body is well-sculpted like any modern CUV should be. We like the fact that Volvo eschews busyness in their design language, and even when this car is replaced with the next-gen version, it will still look handsome, especially in charcoal gray.Front: The wide Volvo grille isn"t overly tall like so many other cars today, keeping it clean with simple headlights and a crisp lower fascia.

Volvo takes the time to do their Contour seats just about perfectly, and we wonder why other automakers can"t do as good of a job with support and bolstering. If you"re going to take a long trip in a car, these seats are pretty much perfect. We laud Volvo for not sacrificing comfort for aesthetics, though these seats are pretty attractive.

Despite an odd storage compartment behind the waterfall center stack, the rest of the Volvo works well in the storage department. Good door pockets, a fairly capacious center armrest and good cupholders ensure easy gear stowage. Though you likely won"t haul any furniture in the XC60, there"s plenty of space for a weekend road trip behind the second row.Storage: Good storage options, but it"s no Honda Pilot. There wasn"t much we didn"t like except the strange space behind the center stack, which was hard to reach and made it easy to forget that we left things there since you can"t see it directly unless you peer behind it.

You can wait for the 2018 XC60 in hopes that it looks like a small XC90 (which it will), or you can get this one now. It does everything very well--drives comfortably, looks attractive and stores plenty. You"ll just have to be okay with not having great infotainment technology or audio/infotainment/climate controls. It"s a sacrifice but not a huge one since the Volvo XC60 remains very appealing even in its final iteration for this generation.

The first generation (2000–2009)S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R.ECC concept car and the S80.

The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year.Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America"s first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina.

The Volvo S60 was released in 2000 (2001 model year) being the company"s new generation sports sedan. The S60 is aimed to mainly compete in Europe with the BMW 3 Series (E46), the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203) and the Alfa Romeo 156. Unlike its rivals, the Volvo S60 continued production for 9 years with multiple facelifts. When it was introduced the appearance was unlike the squared vehicles offered in previous years, and continued the new design tradition introduced by the larger S80, utilizing a cab forward approach and was more organic appearing with a pronounced shelf along the beltline that ran the length of the vehicle, achieving a Cd=0.28 drag coefficient.crumple zones, driver and front passenger dual threshold airbags with a collapsible three-stage steering column, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) supplemented with air bags for driver and front passenger, along with a side curtain airbag for front and rear passengers, anti-submarine seats, five padded head restraints with Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), and automatic seat belt pretensioners while front belts also have height adjustment.

The S60 came standard with Volvo"s own radio unit, the HU-613, the HU-803 and was later upgraded to the HU-650 and an optional extra HU-850 unit. The HU-850 unit features a 225 or 335-watt power output (depending on optional external amplifier) with three presets: 2CH, 3CH and Dolby Digital Pro Logic II Surround Sound. The Four-C chassis from the S60 R became an option on some S60s.

Police specification models came about through Volvo"s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result, the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model that sometimes the Volvo S60 is used as police cars.

First introduced in 2004, Volvo"s S60 R used a Haldex computer controlled all-wheel-drive system mated to a 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) / 400 N⋅m (300 lbf⋅ft) inline-5 which sends 95 percent of the torque to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and can send up to 70 percent to the rear wheels as necessary.manual transmission, or an available 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m) torque in 1st and 2nd gears. The 2006–2007 models came with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission (which was no longer torque-restricted).

Semi-active suspension with Four-C (a short name for "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept") allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. "Comfort" attempts to soften the car over bumps, while "Advanced" firms the suspension considerably and gives more aggressive throttle response - a setting Volvo implies is for use on the race track. This is accomplished through a drive by wire throttle, allowing the same pedal travel to result in different performance when the appropriate mode is selected,Ohlins Racing AB and shock absorber manufacturer Monroe for the self-adjusting shock absorbers.

Another Volvo factory option for only the S60 R was a body kit which included front bumper splitters, side skirts and a rear valance, color matched to the body. The body kit was only available with certain body colors and in certain markets.

The second generation S60 began production in Ghent, Belgium on May 17, 2010, with an expected annual production of 90,000 vehicles.Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.Haldex AWD system. More differences in the second generation S60 include the new large Volvo iron symbol, parallel to the grille LED day running lamps and larger spaced letters in the brand name on rear.

The Volvo S60 and V60 come with Volvo"s City Safety system as standard, which is the same system fitted to its sister the XC60. This system stops the car in the event of impending collision in "City Traffic" below 19 mph (31 km/h). Also, a new safety feature named "Pedestrian Detection" (available on both the V60 and S60) detects people in front of the car and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time. The new sedan shows off Volvo"s completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. It rides on the same platform as the XC60. The goal of this new design was to target younger demographics.

In 2013, the T5 engine was revamped before the launch of the Drive-E arrival. Among the tweaks to the T5 power plant is a boost in engine compression to 9.5:1 from 9.0, engine torque peaks at 4200 rpm and engine management changes provide faster gear changes and upshifts when the 6-speed automatic gearbox is in the sport mode. Output remains the same over 2012 at 250 bhp (186 kW; 253 PS) and 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque, although there is a provision for overboost from the turbo which bumps the torque number to 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m). The changes in compression ratio helps the S60 T5 deliver 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) extra in the city and combined cycle. Front-drive versions are rated at 21 mpg‑US (8.9 km/L) city/30 mpg‑US (13 km/L) highway for a combined of 24 mpg‑US (10 km/L), while the AWD model is 1 mpg‑US (0.43 km/L) less across the board. Volvo also says the T5 AWD is good for a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) sprint of 6.6 seconds, while the front-drive version is 0.2 seconds quicker.

Changes include all-new exterior panels from the A-pillars forward including a new hood, front fenders and fascia; a wider grille with a larger Ironmark is flanked by new headlights while a larger, wider lower front intake gains bright accents and horizontally mounted LED daytime running lights; new integrated exhaust pipes at rear, a new Adaptive Digital TFT Display instrument cluster for select models (R-Design versions include unique blue instrument dials), new paddle shifters on T6 AWD and R-Design models (optional on T5), Advanced Quick Shift (AQS) option on all T6 engines and activated when the transmission is set to sport mode or when using paddle shifters, IntelliSafe with Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake and Cross Traffic Alert became part of the Technology Package, a new radar-based Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to monitor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles behind the car while still informing the driver about vehicles in the blind spots on both sides of the car, Cross Traffic Alert with radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space.

The Volvo S60L PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) concept car was unveiled at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.Volvo Cars announced that the S60L PPHEV will be manufactured at the Chengdu plant and is scheduled to be launched in China in the first half of 2015.

The S60L PPHEV shares the same electric-drive technology as the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, but instead of the diesel engine of the V60, the S60L PPHEV has a 2-liter, four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engine from Volvo Cars’ new Drive-E engine family. The 50 kW (67 hp) electric motor is powered by an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an all-electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi). The petrol-powered engine produces 177 kW (237 hp) and 350 N·m (258 lb-ft) of torque. The driver can select via three buttons among three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid or Power. In the default hybrid mode, the CO2 emissions are about 50 g/km, corresponding to a fuel consumption of 2.0 L/100 km (140 mpg‑imp; 120 mpg‑US). By selecting Pure mode, the car runs in all-electric mode, and the Power mode combines the capabilities of the engine and motor to deliver 225 kW (302 hp), 550 N·m (405 lb-ft) of torque and 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 5.5 seconds.

Volvo unveiled the production model, the S60L T6 Twin Engine PHEV, at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. Sales of the S60L T6 PHEV, limited to the Chinese market, began on 22 April 2015. The production model has an all-electric range of 53 km (33 mi).

A new limited production model known as the S60 Cross Country saw a limited American release in the autumn of 2015 (as it was for the 2015 model year in Europe), with each dealership only getting one car. This variant is similar to the Volvo V60 Cross Country, as it is a raised sedan variant of the S60. Limited to about 500 units from 2016 to 2017.

The Volvo S60 Polestar performance concept is a version of the Volvo S60 T6 AWD with a Volvo T6 inline six (B6304T4) engine rated at 508 PS (374 kW; 501 hp) at 6500 rpm and 575 N⋅m (424 lb⋅ft) of torque at 5500 rpm. Earlier on, we reported on the imminent arrival of the Volvo XC60 T6 when a brochure detailing the car was revealed online. Now, Volvo Malaysia has officially opened the order books for the car, with prices starting from an introductory RM315,888 (on-the-road without insurance).

The XC60 T6 is powered by the all-new Drive-E 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder mill, with 306 hp at 5,700 rpm and 400 Nm of twist available from 2,100 rpm to 4,500 rpm – up 61 hp and 50 Nm from the T5 variant. An eight-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox sends power to the front wheels, and it’s all good enough to get the 0-100 km/h dash done in 6.9 seconds.

Upgrades over the T5 version include 18-inch Pan Alloy rims shod with 235/60 tyres and an eight-inch Adaptive Digital Display. The latter, first featured on the Volvo V40 T5, employs an active Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display unit to project information to the driver. Three themes are available – Elegance, Eco and Performance.

There’s also Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW), as well as Road Sign Information, City Safety, an enhanced version of Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Cross Traffic Alert – the latter uses radar sensors at the rear of the car to warn the driver of incoming cars when reversing out into the flow of traffic.

The Volvo XC60 T6 comes with Volvo’s 5+5+5 coverage plan, which translates to a five-year/100,000 km warranty, five years of free service and five years of access to the Volvo On Call roadside assistance programme.
