When Dyson announced they’re done with R&D on uprights (after releasing the V10), I thought they were nuts. But subsequent models prove they mean business. The V15 Detect is Dyson’s latest, and they’ve managed to give it more power and performance but is it worth the high cost? We’ll find out in this review.

Unlike the Outsize, which’s really a jumbo version of the Torque Drive, the V15 is a true upgrade with several new technologies introduced. In the forefront is the green laser light on the fluffy slim attachment – which is my favorite. Next is the piezo sensor that counts and measures dust particles relayed on the LCD screen. Dyson somehow managed to increase suction further over the Outsize. Along with the improved brush roll, the V15 cleans carpet better.

After Dyson unveiled theV11 Torque Drive and Outsize, I’m not what upgrades they would put in aside from adding more power. But they’ve managed to improve upon these two models significantly with the V15 Detect.

The most worthwhile upgrade (in my opinion) would be this green laser on the slim roller attachment. One of my pet peeves with older Dyson cord-free products is the lack of an LED light, which many competing brands have.

Dyson added a piezo sensor right before the cyclones that counts and measures dust particles passing through. Once it detects a rise in quantity, it increases suction to compensate. This feature is similar to Tineco’s iLoop sensor, but it has another function measuring debris size (in microns).

Dyson added combs above the primary brush roll, which was absent in the V11 models. While I like how the V11 resists tangles, hair over above 11 inches will wrap on the brush.

Adding the combs along with the bump in power help the V15 untangle long hair strands better – better than the Shark Vertex cordless I tested previously.

Another upgrade worth noting is the newly designed mini turbo brush. Dyson calls this “hair screw tool” because of the torque-screw-like shape of the brush.

One of my pet peeves with Dyson cordless vacuums is its tools (or lack thereof). Dyson rectifies this somewhat with the V15 as it has more tools than any Dyson cord-free product.

Dirt volume for the V15 remains the same as the V11 Torque Drive at 0.77 liters. It has the same trombone type lever and point-and-shoot emptying approach.

Before the V15 came out, the V11 Outsize was the most powerful cordless vacuum I’ve tested in terms of airflow. But the V15 changes all that. As usual, I used an anemometer to measure in two critical areas – wand and cleaning head.

Suction tests confirm this bump in airflow as the V15 has the highest number of all Dyson cord-free products with 100″ of water lift(in the highest setting), six more than the DreameTech T30, and ten more than the V11 Outsize.

One benefit of the V15 is the smaller frame. It’s the same size as the V11 Torque Drive but with more power than the Outsize, so you’ll get the benefit of both the Torque Drive and Outsize in one product.

The bump in power is evident in the cleaning tests, where the V15 picked up a high percentage across the board – one of the highest ever (of all the vacuums I’ve tested).

Aside from coffee grounds, the V15 picked up 100% with other debris. One issue with the soft roller is that it spins rapidly and will scatter some debris forward, which is why it didn’t pick up 100% with coffee grounds.

Next, we’ll look at how well the V15 did on carpet, and it was better. The increase in suction and airflow was evident on this surface as it picked up a perfect 100% on all the tests.

Thicker pile carpet, same results – the V15 picked up a perfect score on this surface. And realize that I used the auto setting on these tests, which makes it more impressive.

The V15 is the best so far of all cordless vacuums at picking up hair regardless of surface. These results prove the combs and subtle improvements done on the brush works.

Being a Dyson product, there won’t be an issue with parts availability. Historically, consumers can still purchase replacement parts for models as old as the V6. Even earlier variants such as the DC-series have good parts availability.

Tracks dust like no other vacuum: The green laser is possibly a game-changer in how vacuum cleaners track dust. I’ve tried a lot of vacuums with LED headlights, each with varying success at such. But none of them can accentuate it as well as the V15 Detect.

Best cord-free deep cleaning option: While the V11 Outsize and Torque Drive can deep clean carpet, the V15 beats both, picking up 100% at the Eco setting.

Dyson ups the ante with the V15 Detect. All the upgrades with it help make home cleaning more efficient. For me, the most practical would be the green laser where dust particles are exposed in a manner not possible with an LED headlight.

It’s also an ideal option on hard floors and carpets with its uptick in power. And excellent at cleaning hair because of the upgrades Dyson put in the mini-turbo brush and standard brush roll.

The Dyson V15 Detect is a step above the V11 Torque Drive and Outsize with power, cleaning performance, and practicality. This model addressed some of the issues I had with these older variants – particularly visibility. Adding a green laser will help users immensely at tracking invisible-to-the-nake-eye dust. It’s also better at cleaning hair, especially on carpet and upholstery where the updated designed high torque brush and new torque screw attachment excels. It picks up hair without the tangles. The only hold back for getting this cordless vacuum would be the high cost and ergonomics. Are you willing to fork out the cash to get this? This will be a deciding factor whether or not to purchase this product.

Dyson is a leader in the vacuum game with their top-notch technology and user-friendly designs. We even named their V8 Absolute one of the best vacuums at one point. They continuously make reliable, easy-to-use, and powerful vacuums, and with their latest release, the V15 Detect, they’ve created their most intelligent vacuum yet. But does a gadget meant to pick up dirt and grime need to be so smart?

Dyson has included tons of versatile attachments for all-purpose cleaning with the V15 Detect vacuum. The Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head can be removed for a more basic Digital Motorbar, which I use as my default attachment. The Digital Motorbar effectively picks up dust and long hair from carpet and hardwood floors. I have been most impressed with its anti-tangle properties. My roommate and I both have long hair that can hide in our carpet. The Motorbar picks up all of our hair without clogging the suction source, something that has happened with other vacuums I’ve used in the past.

My other favorite tool is the combination one. I’ve used that for cleaning my baseboard and in hard-to-reach cracks. Most of the other attachments have sat collecting dust in my cleaning supplies storage corner. While Dyson makes it extremely easy to affix all of their attachments, my laziness gets the better of me and I stick to what I know. I’m already cleaning my floors, I can’t be bothered to figure out which is the upholstery attachment to clean a couch that I carried off of the streets of New York for free.

In my testing, I found that the laser performed best in dark or dimly lit rooms. In areas with natural light or overhead lights, it was hardly useful. I also found that the Slim Laser Fluffy attachment featured noticeably less suction than the Motorbar. I also didn’t understand its mission. It illuminates the path of the vacuum meaning it lights up dust I’m already planning to roll over. During my six months of testing the V15 Detect, I never opted for this attachment when I actually wanted to clean my floors. It was a fun party gag to show off to friends, but I was so impressed with the Motorbar I never wanted to take it off.

The actual “scientific proof” of a deep clean displayed on the screen proved less useful. Frankly, before writing this review, I didn’t really even know what the little bars represented. Yes, I could have read the manual or conducted a quick Google search, but ultimately the proof of a deep clean is in the pudding, or in this case, the floor. My carpet has truly never looked so fluffy and fresh and I could see how much dirt and hair was collecting in the dustbin after even a five-minute clean of what looked to me like a mostly clean floor. If you’re super into gadgets, perhaps this is a fun upgrade, but it’s not crucial to the performance of the V15 Detect.

While I absolutely loved the power and suction on this vacuum, it’s not entirely necessary to buy. Dyson makes other stick vacuums that are almost as high-powered for a much lower price. The intelligent features on the V15 Detect went mostly unused or under-appreciated. The average vacuum user doesn’t need cleaning reports or lasers, they just want something that will quickly and effectively clean their floors. This vacuum certainly did that, but the upgrades make for a high price without much payoff.

Performance tests:The Dyson V15 notched nearly perfect scores in our performance tests, including Excellent ratings for cleaning carpet and bare floors and picking up pet hair. It scarfed up the sand, rice, and cereal we scattered on carpet; removed litter from tile floors; and attacked the pet hair in a medium-pile carpet.

It also runs quietly, earning an Excellent rating in that test, and is just as quiet as the three top stick vacuums in our tests, all from Tineco. Its brandmate, the Dyson V11 Outsize, which scores a point lower, is a bit noisier.

Runtime is a big factor for cordless vacuums, and the Dyson V15 runs for about 70 minutes per charge on low and 8 minutes on high. That’s on par with the other late-model Dyson cordless stick vacs and longer than many of the other brands of cordless vacuums in our tests. The battery takes 5 hours to recharge, which is typical for many cordless vacuums. The V15 comes with one battery, but you can buy an extra separately for $150 if you prefer to always have a backup charged to ensure an uninterrupted cleaning session.

According to data from CR’s exclusive member survey, none of the brands of cordless stick vacuums we rate earns a reliability rating better than a middling Good. Dyson cordless stick vacuums earn a Fair rating for reliability.

Some choose to lead their lives according to the ideal of ignorance is bliss. The Dyson V15"s Dyson Hyperdymium motor spins at up to 125,000rpm and generates 230 air watts of suction, which is 24% more suction power than the V11 range. The 5-stage filtration captures 99.99% of dust particles down to 0.3 microns for a powerful deep clean.

PIEZO SensorFor those who want real-time proof and insights into the dirt on their floors, Dyson integrated an acoustic Piezo sensor into the design that continuously sizes and counts dust particles and shows how much has been picked up in a graph on the LCD screen. Essentially, once you notice the numbers start to slow, you can assume that the Dyson has suctioned everything there is to pick up. Plus it will automatically increase suction power across different floor types based on the amount of dust and other particles present on the surface.

I personally ran into an issue where my Piezo sensor was switched off, and it"s not a feature that I missed or affected the cleaning performance of my machine. Dyson was quick to remedy me with a replacement unit, but I do wish that it was something that could have been repaired without requiring an entirely new device.

Anti-Tangle Hair TechKeeping our pets and long-haired users in mind, Dyson has reworked how hair interacts with its technology by developing ananti-tangle conical brush bar that spirals hair off and into the bin to prevent hair wrap on the brushbar. The tech is available on a smaller and full-size High Torque Cleanerhead, which has polycarbonate teeth that look like a comb and prevent tangling around the bristles when you are cleaning, and automatically clear hair from the brush bar.

LCD ScreenThe LCD displays will show a real-time count of the collected particles from the PIEZO sensor, a run-time countdown clock, the power mode in use, and maintenance alerts, such as when an air channel is clogged, or the bin needs emptying.

FiltrationYou"ll only find the best with Dyson. The V15 Detect offers Dyson’s 5-stage advanced filtration technologies, capturing 99.97% of particles as small as 0.1microns, to expel cleaner air.

On Hard FloorsHere"s where the Dyson V15 Detect comes out to shine. The Fluffy floor head with the built-in laser effectively hunts down dirt and debris that the naked eye can"t see. The soft brush roll design also won"t scratch floors and is the most optimized at maintaining battery life.

Emptying the Dust BinThe Dyson V15 Detect has one of the easiest bins to empty. Just detach from the wand, angle over the garbage, and slide the red handlebar down and most of the contents will just roll out. However, I did find that lingering dust bunnies and hair clumps that clung to the mesh filters were difficult to fish out.

I trialed the Dyson V15 Detect through I call the Pantry Test, the unscientific test that uses common pantry staples to test the suction capabilities of our vacuums. I arranged a quarter cup of cereal, a quarter cup of rice, and a tablespoon of sugar to see how the vacuum handled food particles large and small.

The Pantry Test on carpet with the Fluffy FloorheadThe Fluffy floorhead seemed to suction up the cereal in one big inhale, but in actuality it clogged the machine, causing the rice to jump around as I tried to vacuum it up. So, thinking to give up on the rice, I went to my sugar pile. Same issue. Then I looked at the LCD screen, which was displaying images signaling blocked passageways. Once I cleared the clog coming from the brushhead, the rice and sugar were swiftly picked up.

When observing Dyson(opens in new tab) directly, the vacuum holds a 4.5-star rating, with many expressing their excitement over the innovative laser technology and suction power that revealed a lot about the cleanliness of their homes. A few mentioned trouble with an instruction to clean the filter after very limited use, while others expressed frustration that the vacuum didn"t last the full 60 minutes that was quoted.

The Dyson V15 Detect is the first vacuum of its kind to offer a laser in its design. The body styling is similar in design to the V11 series, but with a slightly stronger motor. However, it"s built off the same motor as the V11 series. At $749.99, it"s the third most expensive, but has the most powerful design, with Dyson claiming that it offers 100% more suction power than the more V8 Animal cordless vacuum.

However, the most premium model, the extra-large Dyson Outsize +(opens in new tab) at 949.99, has a 50% larger dust bin and double the operating time. The Dyson Outsize + was recently rebranded to include the same Laser Slim Fluffy Cleaner Head, which means it now offers the same core features as the V15 Detect, but on a larger scale.

Additionally, in the summer of 2022, Dyson released the V12 Detect(opens in new tab) series, which retails at $649.99. The V12 Detect is officially 40% lighter, offering a .1-gallon dust bin and trading the trigger design for a power button, which makes it easy to switch hands while cleaning. It does offer slightly less suction power, 150AW to the V15 Detects 230AW.

The Dyson V15 Detect will absolutely transform the way you clean. It literally hunts dust to reveal what is on your floors. It"s a little unsettling to see just how much dirt gathers after a few days of not vacuuming, but equally exciting to see it suctioned up with a quick pass-through. Not to mention, the sheer suction power that this slim cordless is able to offer.

I fell in love with it (even though it was outrageously expensive). Many things about it are great! Then suddenly, I noticed it stopped showing the "Particle Count". Not a big deal, except that also means that "Reactive Suction" is disabled. I tried charging it, removing the battery, reinserting it, but no matter what, the "Particle Count" function won"t enable. I set it to on, and hold the button for 5 seconds, but it still shows as off. The LCD screen also times out or glitches, and disappears after about 10 seconds. So you have to be quick to do anything in menu. So obviously, the vacuum just has a problem, and I need to get support. I went to Dyson"s website where I already registered the vacuum, and went through the support menu. It was useless, and didn"t provide any method to get to a support person. I finally found their phone number. When I called it, the phone does a variety of incorrect things. First, it will just answer and provide dead air indefinitely. Second, it will ring many times, then provide something similar to a busy tone. Third, it will connect and talk in another language. I got lucky and pressed 2, since I recognized it was saying "press one to continue in [another language]". I then got three options, Price Match, Existing Order, or something else. None of which were support. I tried pressing 2 anyways to see if I could get to a person, then it goes back to dead air. So I found a way to get to the Chat function, which you first have to answer a bunch of troubleshooting questions in a certain way so that it gives you the option to chat with a rep. I did so, and was presented with "No one is currently available. Please try again later." It is 10 AM on a Tuesday. Their hours indicate they are open, but I can"t get support. I"m returning the vacuum. I may try purchasing it again later, but I"m not getting stuck with this thing if I can"t get support, and have a partially functioning [expensive] vacuum.

Within the last year, the Dyson V15 Detect has generated significant buzz. It"s topped wishlists, shaken up the homes of self-proclaimed clean-freaks, and frequently goes in and out of stock.

I"ve had the pleasure of owning the Dyson V15 Detect for over a year now, and let me tell you, it"s the one vacuum I am holding on to for dear life. You see, I"ve tested a number of the best vacuums, and thist is not one I personally plan on giving up anytime soon, no matter how often my family and friends ask.

So, what"s so exciting about the Dyson V15 Detect? Being Dyson, it already has built-in fan base solely on brand reputation, meaning we expected best-in-class suction power and air filtration. It"s also the first to add a small green laser to its fluffy floorhead that reveals all the little microscopic particles hidden from the eye. Gimicky? Perhaps. Effective? Definitely.

It then adds a quantitative figure to your clean, with a Piezo sensor. I had no idea what this was until Dyson showed me this one, but basically, it counts every single particle count down to 10 microns – the size of allergens and pollen. The Piezo sensor also serves the purpose to let the vacuum systems know exactly how much suction power is needed – a great move to conserve battery power.

Those with large homes:The dust bin is smallish, but comparable to other Dyson products, the long-last battery runs for up to 60 minutes and the lightweight design ensures you"ll be able to power through spaces large and small, though there may be pit stops to the trash.

The Dyson V15 Detect arrives in a cardboard sleeve for shipping that slides out to reveal the sleek white packaging of the box. Each piece was neatly wrapped in paper, avoiding the use of plastic packaging. The bundle also forgoes a lengthy manual (which can be found online) for a quick start guide.

Like other Dysons I"ve used, each piece easily clicks together and is interchangeable to use with the wand arm directly from the handheld unit. While the battery does come with some juice, you should charge it before going on a full cleaning mission.

The Dyson V15 Detect also has a wall charging unit and includes hardware to install. For an extra cost, Dyson offers a floor stand, which is convenient for those who want a home base for their vacuum but are not particularly keen on drilling into walls.

Dyson integrated an acoustic Piezo Sensor into the design that continuously sizes and counts dust particles and shows how much has been picked up in a graph on the LCD screen. The Piezo sensor counts pieces smaller than 10 µm, like allergens and pollens; less than 60 µm, particles the size of microscopic dust and skin flakes; 180 µm particles the size of dust mites and fine sand; and 500µm particles the size of sugar and fleas. The Piezo Sensor is also connected to the V15 Detect"s suction power: it automatically adjusts across different floor types based on the amount of dust and other particles present on the surface.

The filtration system is comprised of the bin cyclone (that uses centrifugal force to separate dust, dirt, and hair from airflow), a metal mesh filter, cyclone technology, and pre-and post-motor filters that capture the smallest pollutants.

According to reddit(opens in new tab), I"m not the only one with this issue. On two separate units, I noticed at different points in time that the Piezo sensor wasn"t working, and in settings mode, it revealed that the Piezo sensor was off. That"s fine, I"ll just turn it back on, but instead of allowing me to change settings, well, any settings, the LCD screen cuts off. The first unit, I bypassed as a fluke, a computer chip malfunction, and it was swiftly replaced, but the second time... why would this happen?

In the event of any blockages, the V15 Detect will let you know on the display screen that it detects a malfunction and automatically cuts off. You"ll want to check the tubes here to see what is caught.

Filters should be cleaned monthly. Located in the purple crown of the handheld, the plastic part unscrews off, and the HEPA filter can be washed with water. Be sure it is completely dry before placing back onto the machine. For more, read our advice on cleaning Dyson filters.

Dyson is the only manufacturer that we know of that offers the laser and the Piezo sensor technology. Following the release of the Dyson V15 Detect, it has also released a series of similar variations now dubbed the Laser Vacuums(opens in new tab), most specifically, a version of the Dyson Outsize + with no Piezo sensor, but a half-gallon dust bin and two hours of runtime, and the new Dyson V12 Detect series, which is lighter but has a significantly smaller dust bin at just .01 gallons and less suction prowess. It does have a lower price tag of about $100, and a continuous operation button, as opposed to the traditional trigger.

Others like Shark, however, have mastered auto-adjusting suction functionalities while Tineco has its own special tech to showcase how clean, or dirty your floors are. These come in at much lower price points so if you don"t want all of the Dyson capabilities in one, you can make a saving with picking your chosen tech on an alternative brand.

The Dyson V15 Detect is a fantastic vacuum that pushes the boundaries of what to look for in a vacuum. The green laser and Piezo sensor almost gamify vacuuming, while delivering a high-level clean. However, I have some concerns about its reliability, given my issues with the Piezo sensor. Fortunately, Dyson has been swift to replace my malfunctioning units, but a little more indirect as to why this kept occurring.Today"s best Dyson V15 Detect deals

LCD screen displays scientific proof of a deep clean. Calculates and categorizes picked-up particles, showing you on-screen as you clean. Also displays run time countdown and power mode.2

Dyson doesn"t stick to chronological order when naming its stick vacuum models. Sometimes it skips numbers, and sometimes it"ll introduce a lower number as a later model than a higher number. For example, Dyson introduced the V15 immediately after the V11, and then the V12 after the V15. In the broadest sense, the numbers seem to loosely grow larger with each passing release—the V11 is newer than the V10, and the V10 is newer than the V8. But Dyson"s naming system is cryptic enough that even we can"t predict what the subsequent model will be.

Dyson also has a lot of sub-models, because its naming scheme isn"t confusing enough. Each one has a different number of included tool attachments and accessories. Every model (V7, V8, V10, V11, V15, etc.) seems to introduce new sub-models, so the list just keeps growing, and then there are discontinued sub-models that show up as old stock on websites, typically on sale.

Detect isn"t exactly a sub-model, but rather part of the name of the V15 Detect and V12 Detect Slim. It refers to the laser detection system that measures particle size and count to customize suction power.

Allergy used to mean that it came with an upgraded filter that traps 99.99 percent of bacteria and dust so it expels cleaner air than regular models, but after the V7 all Dyson stick vacs started including the upgraded filters. It"s largely a legacy designation now, and it hasn"t been used on newer models.

Motorhead sounds fancy, but it"s the low-end sub-model that comes with a motorized head, a couple of basic brush and crevice tools, and that"s about it. Mostly a holdover from the V7 days. Dyson has found other names for basic sub-models.

Dyson isn"t above combining sub-model names too. Basically, the more names Dyson slaps onto a model, the more attachments it comes with. For example, the V8 Animal Pro comes with more stuff than the Animal, but the Animal Pro+ comes with even more than that.
