I’ve tested a bunch of robot vacuums, all with varying results. If you’re familiar with robot vacuums yourself, you’ll know that you can’t always rely on them to fulfill all application areas. And having to occasionally use the traditional wired, big, clunky vacuum cleaner isn’t particularly enjoyable. It’s time to find out if a Dyson V15 – a cordless vacuuming cleaner – might be just what you need.

On first impression, this looks nothing like regular vacuum cleaner – more like the weapons used to catch ghosts in the 80s classic, Ghostbusters. Dyson V15 is cordless and little tacky, and I’m sure the orange, purple and red color combination will make people with a taste for minimalistic electronics cringe.

You’ll get a total 60 minutes of run time, and the remaining time is visible on the LCD screen at the end of the handle. There’s also a small button to switch suction mode: Eco mode, Auto, Med mode and Boost mode, depending on which brush you’re using. Extra batteries can be purchased separately. If you use Auto and Med mode and/or the special High Torque nozzle (brush with anti-filter comb), the suction power is adjusted to be stronger the dirtier it is. The same applies if you go from a regular floor to a carpet. Of course, this affects battery life, but if you use the Dyson V15 to complement a robot vacuum, you won’t need to vacuum for 60 minutes at a time.

Cleaning is seldom synonymous with fun, but seeing the results in real time makes it all the more enjoyable! The vacuum cleaner has a piezoelectric sensor that calculates dust particles and shows both the amount sucked up and the size of the particles in different coloured bars on the LCD screen.

According to Dyson, the piezo sensor calculates particles passing through 15,000 times per second, which I haven’t measured, but it does sound impressive. On the LCD screen you can see how many particles are smaller than 10 µm (microns), such as allergens and pollen; particles smaller than 60 µm, which is the size of microscopic dust and skin flakes; 180 µm, which is the size of dust mites; and 500 µm, which are particles that are about 0.5 mm.

And that’s what makes cleaning a bit more exciting! The LCD screen’s brightly coloured bars and numbers can pique the interest of even the most bored teenagers, making them vacuum on their own initiative. That is, if you’ve placed the vacuum somewhere that’s easily accessible, of course.

If your bathroom needs a little love, you can simply take the Dyson V15, bring as many accessories as you need and go at it. You won’t have to worry about emptying the vacuum bag either, as dust ends up in a plastic container which can simply be emptied whenever you feel like it.

The filter is placed right alongside the LCD screen, which as mentioned collects 99,97 percent of particles as small as 0.1 µm, in order to thoroughly clean the air.

With its LCD screen with colors, charts and numbers, Dyson V15 manages to turn cleaning into a more enjoyable activity. The answer to the question of which to choose, the V15 Absolute or the Complete, depends on your needs. Is it possible to get excited about a vacuum cleaner? Turns out the answer is, erm, yes. We’re as surprised as you are, but the new Dyson cordless (the V15 Detect Absolute, to give it its full name) will have you getting embarrassingly enthused about that most tedious of household chores. Why? Because there are so many things about this device that are inherently clever, using it holds the same appeal as playing with any highly evolved piece of technology. The fact it’s designed for getting dust off a carpet is almost by the by.

Exhibit A: frickin’ laser beams. Not the boring kind you can"t see like the one inside your DVD player, but the kind that are visible and green and shoot outwards like a David Guetta lighting rig. The V15 comes with a special laser-equipped head designed for hard floors which casts a fan-shaped beam angled downwards at 1.5 degrees to illuminate fine dust but not the surface beneath it. Combined with the laser’s green colour, which enhances contrast, the light reveals dirt that would otherwise be invisible. At face value, this feature might seem like the very definition of over-engineering, but using the thing was a sobering experience. Once you are able to physically see what’s lurking on your floor – and therefore become aware of how much time and care it actually takes to get rid of it all – you realise that you had clearly never vacuumed the room properly ever before.

Now let us turn our attention to the back of the device, where you’ll spy an LCD screen. On the one hand, this serves a prosaic function – it allows you to select the power mode. You can toggle it between “eco” and “boost”, but doing so would be foolish. For inside the V15 lies another disproportionately advanced feature: a “piezo sensor”, which measures the acoustic vibrations of dust particles at 15,000 times a second as they pass by and from that extrapolates how many are travelling through the inlet. Used in “Auto” mode, the machine adjusts its own power accordingly, allowing it to maximise its battery life. Dyson promises that it “delivers up to 60 minutes of whole-home cleaning” and in practice it has lasted the best part of an hour each time we’ve tested it.

But that rear screen also shows you something rather less orthodox. A bar graph reveals what kinds of particles are being sucked up as you clean: how many are >10µm (culprits include allergens and pollen), >60µm (dust and skin flakes), >180µm (dust mites and fine sand) or >500µm (sugar and fleas). Is that useful? No, not really – there’s not much you can actually do with that information. But it does serve a function. Back in 2011, I interviewed Dyson for Wired and asked him why his vacuums were see-through. “There’s a little bit of the German lavatory in it,” he said. “What you do sits there and you inspect it before flushing it away. So there’s a little bit of morbid curiosity.” The V15"s digital bar graph satisfies the same “morbid curiosity” and, as with being able to see the dust accumulate inside the device, it provides proof that you’re doing a thorough job.

A well-featured vacuum that has the power and battery life to handle everything we threw at it, our one major quibble with the V15 Detect, as you can read below, is its high price. This stonking deal from Dyson has gone a good way to addressing that, taking a massive £149 off the Detect price when we reviewed (and this + model has even more tools).

Dyson’s cordless stick vacuum cleaners need little introduction, and have a history of being both the best and most expensive models money can buy. The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute is the latest generation to join the clan and, as you’d expect, it’s more powerful and feature-packed than any model Dyson has launched to date.

There’s nothing new about the shape and size of the V15, which is very similar to the V11. However, it introduces anti-tangle technology to two of its motorised heads, which prevents the rollers becoming clogged with long hair.

There’s also a laser mounted on the hard floor motorised head, which highlights even the tiniest dust particles so you can see how clean, or dirty, your floor still is. Lastly, the V15 now counts the particles it collects, so you can keep tabs on how much dust and filth it’s picking up.

At first glance you’d be forgiven for questioning whether anything has changed, because the Dyson V15 looks so remarkably similar to its predecessors. It measures 249 x 267 x 1,260mm (WDH) with the wand and motor head attached, and it weighs 3.08kg.

There are also two new anti-tangle heads, which work in slightly different ways to keep your carpet brushes free from tangled hair. The main floor head, which Dyson calls the High Torque Cleaner, combs hair out of its brush as it goes, lifting hair away from the roller and passing it through to the vacuum tube.

For once, the latest Dyson isn’t the most expensive vacuum in the range. At £50 more, that honour falls to the V11 Outsize, which has a bigger dust collection bin and a wider cleaning head than the V15. If you have a large house and a lot of floor to cover, the V11 Outsize is probably a more sensible choice, although it does lack the anti-tangle attachments and dust-detection technologies.

If you can’t stretch to £649 for a vacuum, that’s completely understandable, and stepping down in price doesn’t mean compromising on quality. The Dyson V8, despite its age, is still a worthy contender at £349.

For the real bargains, you need to walk away from the Dyson stable entirely and check out its cordless rivals. Both the Vax Blade 4 and Vax Blade 3 did a good job of cleaning in our tests and prices on those start at a very reasonable £169.

For a smaller, lighter model that doesn’t cost as much as the Dysons, the Eufy HomeVac S11 Infinity costs a mere £230 at Eufy, and comes with plenty of handy accessories and a useful second battery.

The Absolute in this Dyson’s name lets you know that this is the model that comes with all the extras, and the box is certainly overflowing with attachments. I’ve already mentioned the three motorised floor heads, but there’s also a selection of other accessories: a crevice tool for getting into nooks and crannies; a soft brush tool for agitating and collecting dust on delicates; and a handy combination tool, which can either be a brush or a simple angled tube.

As for the design, that follows the same template that has been in place since the V10. The main vacuum unit containing the device’s motor and cyclones sits above a pistol grip handle. The 0.76-litre dust collection bin is mounted forward of this, between the motor and any attachment you might be using. There’s a button on the rear for swapping between the various modes and an LCD display above it.

The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute doesn’t have the heft of the V11 Outsize’s 3.5kg, but it still passes the 3kg mark comfortably. Coupled with the powerful suction, I found this was a considerable weight to push around, particularly on thicker carpet. If you want something lighter and more manoeuvrable, the Eufy HomeVac S11 Infinity would be our pick.

In terms of suction power, this is Dyson’s most powerful vacuum to date. Dyson vacuums cut out if their airways are blocked, so measuring suction is problematic using our usual vacuum pressure gauge. At the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute’s maximum setting, peak suction reached 31kPa, at which point the vacuum cut out.

This translates well into cleaning power. On a short-pile carpet, in a single pass of the High Torque motorised head on standard power, it collected 92% of a measured spillage of Cheerios. Those that weren’t collected tended to be scattered by the powerful spinning brush, so I performed the test again on the V15’s lower-powered Economy setting, and it collected 96% of the spill.

I tried both the large floor heads on Cheerios spills on a hard floor and the result in each test was perfection. The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute collected 100% of the spilled material; an exceptional performance. I kept the soft head on for the flour test and it gathered every last gram.

Operating the V15 requires you to hold down a trigger so you can’t accidentally leave it running. It has three power modes: Economy, Max and Auto, the latter adapting automatically to the surface you’re cleaning. You select between the modes using the button on the rear of the main vacuum unit.

Here, a colour LCD screen shows which mode you have selected and how long the cleaner has left before the battery will run out. During cleaning, it also displays information generated by the last of the Dyson’s new features: its acoustic dust sensor.

This “listens” to dust particles bouncing off it as they pass, both counting and categorising them by size, then displaying what it has collected in a bar chart on the screen. I have to admit I don’t see the benefit of this. Dyson argues it helps reassure you that a deep clean has occurred, but arguably you get that from seeing the collection bin fill up with muck.

On Economy mode, I found the battery lasted 50 minutes, while you’ll only see 11 minutes of cleaning on the Max setting. Recharging the battery takes around 4hrs 30mins. The Dyson V11 Outsize lasts longer in its low-power mode (nearly 1hr 20mins), but much less time in maximum-power mode (9mins 8secs).

To empty the V15’s collection bin, you have to remove any accessories. Then you can simply hold the unit over your bin and pull down the lever to open a trap door in the bottom, which ejects the dirt. It’s a reasonably straightforward process that works well, but it can be a bit of a fiddle to remove the accessory you’re using mid-clean just to have to clip it back on again.

Dyson has done it again. This cordless stick vacuum cleaner tackled everything we threw at it, with cleaning power that’s just as good as its previous models, and backs this up with a slew of new and worthwhile features.

The three redesigned motorised heads are all eminently useful. Anti-tangle rollers aren’t new to vacuuming, but it’s good to see Dyson finally embracing the technology, and the dust-spotting laser leaves you in no doubt your hard floor is clean. The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute is the best cordless vacuum you can buy right now.

Dyson doesn"t stick to chronological order when naming its stick vacuum models. Sometimes it skips numbers, and sometimes it"ll introduce a lower number as a later model than a higher number. For example, Dyson introduced the V15 immediately after the V11, and then the V12 after the V15. In the broadest sense, the numbers seem to loosely grow larger with each passing release—the V11 is newer than the V10, and the V10 is newer than the V8. But Dyson"s naming system is cryptic enough that even we can"t predict what the subsequent model will be.

Dyson also has a lot of sub-models, because its naming scheme isn"t confusing enough. Each one has a different number of included tool attachments and accessories. Every model (V7, V8, V10, V11, V15, etc.) seems to introduce new sub-models, so the list just keeps growing, and then there are discontinued sub-models that show up as old stock on websites, typically on sale.

Detect isn"t exactly a sub-model, but rather part of the name of the V15 Detect and V12 Detect Slim. It refers to the laser detection system that measures particle size and count to customize suction power.

Allergy used to mean that it came with an upgraded filter that traps 99.99 percent of bacteria and dust so it expels cleaner air than regular models, but after the V7 all Dyson stick vacs started including the upgraded filters. It"s largely a legacy designation now, and it hasn"t been used on newer models.

Motorhead sounds fancy, but it"s the low-end sub-model that comes with a motorized head, a couple of basic brush and crevice tools, and that"s about it. Mostly a holdover from the V7 days. Dyson has found other names for basic sub-models.

Dyson isn"t above combining sub-model names too. Basically, the more names Dyson slaps onto a model, the more attachments it comes with. For example, the V8 Animal Pro comes with more stuff than the Animal, but the Animal Pro+ comes with even more than that.

Luckily, we spent months shuffling past rooms with different vacuums to find recommendations we would recommend IRL. And, to no surprise, Dyson passed with flying colors (and super clean carpets).

Its LCD screen: This just proves to me, as a consumer, how much time and energy was put into designing this vacuum. Dyson wants you to comprehend exactly howit’s getting the job done — and getting the job done efficiently.

The price: Dyson’s V12 Detect is $650, which is pretty comparable — if not pricier — than robot vacuums that do it all for you. That said, I still love working it myself (it’s so simple to use), but it’s one con to consider before purchasing.

When I first unboxed one of Dyson’s newest vacuums, its Omni-Glide, I was shocked at how small it was. Sure, stick and cordless vacuums are the new wave, but this was only a few inches taller than my 11⁄2-year-old niece.

The Dyson V15 Detect is one of Dyson"s latest cordless vacuum models, and arguably, its most satisfying ever. That"s because an unofficial alternate name for the V15 Detect is the "Dyson laser vacuum." Yep, it comes with a freaking laser.

The laser illuminates dust and other particles you can"t see with your naked eye — and it actually really works. Every time I"ve attacked my floors with the V15, the green laser has revealed a disgusting amount of debris, making me reflect on the amount I apparently live in my own filth. The vacuum itself is powerful and efficient — going back over a spot I just vacuumed with the laser shows that the detritus is no longer there.

That"s not the V15"s only fun feature, though. While only one head gets the futuristic laser, the V15 comes with seven attachments in total (including another full-sized head), two of which contain an "anti-tangle comb" meant to keep hair strands from getting caught in the head. It also has an LCD screen on the top of the vacuum that displays the amount of dust particles of different sizes. Apparently, even vacuums are smart now.

The Dyson V15 Detect does what Dyson vacuums do, which is clean effectively with a sleek, powerful, easy-to-maneuver product. The anti-tangle heads have stood up to the tumbleweeds of hair I let accumulate in my house — for purposes of the test, I swear! The laser makes me disgusted, and then satisfyingly confident that my floors are dust-free. Cleaning hardwood and carpet, emptying the chamber, charging, and switching between attachments are all intuitive and truly satisfying.

Then there"s the LCD screen. It"s cool in theory, but the novelty of quantifying my clean wore off pretty quickly, especially since there isn"t a way to track cleans over time. Eventually, the numbers lost all meaning.

Except for the biggest number of all, which is the price. The base model of the V15 costs $699.99, while the V15 Detect+, which comes with HEPA filtration, is $749.99. But honestly, for the gratification that an evening of laser vacuuming delivers, it might be worth it.

The V15 comes with two full-sized heads. The first is the "Laser Slim Fluffy" head, which is specifically designed for hardwood floors. Obviously, this is the one that comes with the laser.

The laser"s role is simply to show you, under a super-bright spotlight, the filth you live with that you can"t see. It doesn"t actually play a role in the cleaning, except perhaps to make sure you get every last particle while going over your floors. It"s green simply because Dyson said it illuminates the stuff on your floor best.

My personal vacuum is a Dyson V7, and one of the most frustrating things about it is the strands of hair that get caught in the vacuum head bristles. When it all becomes too much and stops being an effective vacuum because of the blockage, I have to get in there with scissors.

So I was very excited about the V15"s "High Torque Cleaner Head," which comes with an anti-tangle comb. This is the head you can use on carpet or rugs, and it has a large opening to suck up bigger pieces of debris. The comb has "56 polycarbonate teeth" that Dyson says "prevents tangling around the bristles, so hair is sucked into the bin."

Then, I set the V15 on the mess. While some hair stuck to the outside of the vacuum head, I could not see any tangled or trapped strands in the head itself. While it"s hard to say how well the anti-tangle tech will work in the long term, it has remained hair-free after a few weeks of use on the carpets and rugs in my home. Hallelujah!

While the laser and the anti-tangle comb are the main attractions for the V15, it also comes with some smart features that Dyson says makes it efficient, and lets users see that efficiency in action.

A piezoelectric sensor is able to very rapidly detect changes in pressure, and communicate those changes with electronic signals. One of those sensors comes on board with the V15. So as it"s vacuuming, it counts and understands the size of the particles it is sucking up.

There are two applications for this tech. The first is practical. Dyson says the V15 automatically adjusts its power output depending on the friction it"s encountering. So when it hits a big hairball, for example, it can juice the engine to suck that baby up. But if it"s just doing routine, semi-clean floors, it can operate with less power.

The vacuum takes that piezo sensor data and actually displays it on an LCD screen, showing how many particles of different sizes you"ve vacuumed up. This was neat, at first, for the same reason as the laser. Quantifying those particles made me feel accomplished, and increased the satisfaction of the clean. But honestly, after the first few vacuums, I stopped paying attention to it. I think this would be cool if there was a companion app and a way to track your dust over time. But that"s not a reality yet.

One other great mechanical feature of the vacuum is the chamber. To empty my V7, I open the chamber and have to tap it to get all the debris out. I even go in there with a chopstick sometimes. It"s gross. But the V15 comes with the "point and shoot" system that was first introduced in the V10. It basically treats the chamber like a reverse push pop: you pop open the lid, and then a piece in the chamber pushes down on the debris all the way to the bottom of the bin, so it goes right in the trash. This isn"t a smart feature, per se, but it"s definitely a boon.

Every Dyson product has one big con: The price. At $700, it"s many hundreds of dollars more expensive than other cordless stick vacuums. Outlets like Consumer Reports also recommend that a cordless stick vacuum be a supplement to a stand-up vacuum, which makes that price tag even harder to swallow.

I don"t think I need a second vacuum. My home is not huge, and I do not have a ton of carpet and rugs. But I can clean the whole house on one charge with the V15. The multiple heads mean I can attack any challenge, whether that"s a spill on a carpet or a dark bathroom corner.

Bottom line: The V15 is an excellent vacuum cleaner with some fun toys that turn house cleaning into a party. Whether it"s worth the hefty price tag is up to you.
