LG is working with railroad companies to bring the innovative OLEDs to other lines. "Transparent OLEDs are gaining interest not only from mobility customers in the areas of self-driving cars, airplanes, and subways, but also from sectors such as smart home and smart building industries," said LG in a press release. "As OLEDs are self-emitting with no need of backlights, they are able to produce a maximized transparency rate.

LG isn"t the first company to come up with transparent OLEDs. We"ve seen this sort of tech demonstrated on the CES and IFA show floors for at least eight years now. Samsung was among the first to market the technology, while Xiaomi is among the latest, with its $7,200 transparent TV.

“The application of transparent displays will become more diverse,” said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, a senior vice president at LG Display. He said his company “aims to supply products to a wide range of industries in line with its vision as the leading display solution provider".

LG is bringing transparent OLED displays to subways in Beijing and Shenzhen. The 55-inch, see-through displays show real-time info about subway schedules, locations and transfers on train windows. They also provide info on flights, weather and the news.

Riders will see the tech first on Line 6 in Beijing and Line 10 in Shenzhen. LG plans to expand the OLED displays to other subway lines, which will require working with railroad companies and train glass manufacturers.

Transparent displays have long been a concept shown off at trade shows. Samsung brought its smart OLED windows to CES way back in 2012. That same year, Samsung teased a transparent showcase at IFA. But this latest see-through tech from LG shows a real-world application, and one that actually has some utility.

There’s a good chance we’ll soon see more practical uses of transparent display tech beyond the trade show walls. LG has also put transparent OLED TVs in Harrods’ storefront windows, and Xiaomi recently showed off its $7,200 see-through TV.

“The application of transparent displays will become more diverse,” said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, a senior vice president at LG Display. His division “aims to supply products to a wide range of industries in line with its vision as the leading display solution provider.”

Beijing-based tech company Xiaomi became the first manufacturer to mass-produce a transparent OLED TV available to the public, albeit for a steep price.

Priced at 49,999 yuan (approximately $7,417) on release, the Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition went on salein China on Aug. 16, 2020. The TV comes with a 55-inch, 5.7-millimeters thick transparent OLED panel with a 120Hz (hertz) refresh rate and a 1 ms (millisecond) pixel response time. The Mi TV Lux also has a static contrast ratio of 150,000:1, 10-bit color and 93% coverage of DCI-P3.

Under the hood — or, in this case, a circular base — the Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition comes equipped with a custom MediaTek 9650 chipset alongside Xiaomi"s AI Master Smart Engine image processing, which boasts over 20 optimization algorithms and dedicated optimization for five major use scenarios.

More on the software side, the transparent TV runs on Xiaomi’s custom-made MIUI, which has been tweaked for its super-thin screen feature. The futuristic Dolby Atmos-supported TV also has AI Master for Audio, a feature that automatically changes the audio mode depending on the type of content being played on the TV.

The Xiaomi Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition became the world’s first mass-produced transparent smart TV when the Chinese company released it in August 2020.

Though the technology may be the first commercially available, many transparent TV concepts had already been floating around even before the big Xiaomi reveal, like LG’s prototype signagein 2019. The South Korean brand plans to release its own 55-inchtransparent OLED TVfor consumers by 2023.

The 13-second video highlights the features of the thin TV, especially how the images and videos played on the screen can be viewed from the front but becomes transparent glass when viewed from behind.

While the TV may be enticing for some people, it does come with some caveats. According to NextPit’s review, the Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition’s round base may look bulky on TV furniture stands and “somehow out of place.” Display-wise, the screen only works best under low lighting conditions as the Mi TV Lux has a strong reflective display. Plus, the resolution is maxed out at full HD (1080p).

The plant in Guangzhou will mainly produce OLED (organic light emitting diode) panels for TVs. The factory will initially aim to produce 60,000 panels each month and then gradually ramp up to 90,000 per month.

The factory will built with 2.6 trillion won ($2.33 billion) in capital. South Korea-based LG has a 70 percent stake. The Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development District controls the other 30 percent.

LG has partnered with Swedish manufacturer Assa Abloy Entrance Systems to develop automatic sliding doors with built-in transparent OLED displays, the company announced today. The doors will be aimed at businesses, and LG says they’ll be able to greet customers, communicate with employees, or show ads.

LG has been showing off its transparent displays for a little while now, and it unveiled a range of transparent signage early last year. Now, we’re seeing the panels used in the real world. In August, LG announced that its displays were being used in the windows of subway carriages in Beijing and Shenzhen in China, and OLED-Inforeports that both Panasonic and Xiaomi’s transparent OLED TVs use LG panels.

South Korea’s other major display manufacturer, Samsung, has also experimented with transparent OLED displays in the past, but The Korea Herald reported in 2016 that it had ceased production of the technology.

LG’s announcement doesn’t give much of an indication of when these high-end doors might become available for businesses. But considering the transparent OLED technology has started being deployed, they can’t be too far away from decorating the world’s most decadent shopping centers.

SEOUL, Korea (Aug. 21, 2020) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it has provided the world’s first transparent OLED displays for subway train windows in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shenzhen.

Transparent OLEDs are gaining interest not only from mobility customers in the areas of self-driving cars, airplanes, and subways, but also from sectors such as smart home and smart building industries. As OLEDs are self-emitting with no need of backlights, they are able to produce a maximized transparency rate.

The 55-inch transparent OLED displays installed in the Beijing (Line 6) and Shenzhen (Line 10) subways offer real-time information about subway schedules, locations, transfers, as well as flights and lifestyle information such as weather and news.

LG Display plans to expand the supply of transparent OLEDs to major subway stations in cooperation with railroad companies and subway train glass manufacturers.

According to global consulting firm Prescient & Strategic Intelligence, the transparent display market is expected to grow at an average rate of 46 percent annually and reach $4.93 billion by 2024.

“The application of transparent displays will become more diverse,” said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, Senior Vice President & Head of the TV Business Unit at LG Display. “LG Display aims to supply products to a wide range of industries in line with its vision as the leading display solution provider.”

At first, the translucent displays will be used on trains in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shenzhen, with LG Display the first company to introduce 55-inch transparent OLEDs for subway windows. There is no information about resolution or luminance of the displays, just like there is no data about their expected lifespan or power consumption. Based on the image provided by LG, we are talking about a fairly high-res display with a decent brightness, and good viewing angles.

In Beijing and Shenzhen, the transparent OLEDs will be used to display real-time information about subway schedules, locations, transfers, and flights. In addition, they will offer news updates and weather forecasts. It is noteworthy that the trains will continue to use LCD screens to display things like ads.

Transparent OLEDs have existed for quite a while and have been used by various devices, such as augmented reality headsets. In the coming years, the number of applications that use translucent OLEDs is expected to expand with things like self-driving cars or smart buildings, so makers of OLEDs are getting ready to produce such devices in volume. Given that OLEDs do not need backlighting, it is relatively easy to make them transparent, but making them big and ensuring their longevity is challenging.

The transparent OLED displays will be installed in the Beijing (Line 6) and Shenzhen (Line 10) subways at first, but LG Displays is working with other railroad companies and subway stations to expand usage of its technology.

LG Display this month started production at its 8.5th Generation OLED manufacturing facility in Guangzhou, China. When fully ramped, total capacity of the factory will be 90,000 substrates per month. The plant will produce 55, 65, and 77-inch high-resolution panels for televisions. In fact, LG’s goal is to make 10 million large size OLED panels per year by 2022, which means to more than double its current output.

The new 8.5G OLED panel plant is a nine-level building above the ground that occupies a 74,000 m² piece of land and provides 427,000 m² of floor space. Initial capacity of the manufacturing facility will be 60,000 2200×2500 mm substrates per month, which will be expanded to 90,000 sheets per month by 2021. The factory will be operated by LG Display High-Tech China, a joint venture between LG Display and Guangzhou Development District, in which the former holds a 70% stake (with ~$2,150 billion in capital).

Facing cut-throat competition from various makers of liquid crystal displays, LG Display recently set a strategic goal to significantly expand production of large OLED panels in a bid to serve more lucrative and growing market segments. LGD says that it sold 2.9 million huge OLED panels in 2018 and expects to sell 3.8 million large panels this year, which will turn this business to profitability. Citing market researchers, the manufacturer says that demand for OLED TVs and panels is growing and to that end, it makes a great sense to invest in OLED plants.

Right now, LG makes 70,000 8.5G OLED substrates at its plant near Paju, South Korea. The company is building a 10.5th Generation OLED plant near Paju that will produce 45,000 of 2940×3370 mm substrates per month when it is ready in 2022. Combined, LGD will manufacture 160,000 8.5G OLED substrates and 45,000 10.5G OLED sheets a month in 2022. The company hopes that its expanded manufacturing capacity will enable it to make 10 million of large OLED panels per year by 2022.

The display maker has proposed the launch of a TV that uses a 55-inch transparent OLED panel to LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company, its TV business unit, sources said.

The panel will be fixed on the TV like conventional TVs __ not like LG’s rollable OLED TV or smart bed where a panel could be pulled in and out, they said.

LG Electronics has so far offered transparent OLED products like signage, which were launched by its Business Solutions business unit, but never a one aimed for the home.
