Concept and even mass-producedtransparent OLED TVs are nothing new (and Samsung actually released its first transparent LCD in late 2011) but although the idea of transparent OLEDs has, er, clear potential, the main criticism has always been that see-through OLED displays suffer visibility issues in bright environments. Now, LG Display has collaborated with smart glass technology specialist Gauzy to try and fix that.

Enter then LG"s latest proposition, which was unveiled at this week’s International Motor Show in Munich, Germany. What"s new? Well, this particular transparent OLED screen is laminated with Gauzy’s Suspended Particle Device tech, which LG promises makes it suitable for shifting light conditions and, crucially, for brighter environments such as trains. And furthermore, the company hopes to install them on carriages in Europe.

When SPD is switched on, the screen boasts crisp visual content while also allowing the viewer to see what is behind the display. LG also says it sees the tech as a possible replacement for greenhouse glazing in situations where both information and a view of the outside is desired – so beyond simply occupying a spot in your living room, then.

The SPD technology apparently works by dimming the transparent OLED panel to any desired opacity based on the amount of sunlight it detects. In theory then, it could offer shade for commuters on a train while still displaying relevant information about train timetables (or advertisements) all without losing a view of the cityscape.

LG sees a future dominated by transparent OLEDs (for example, the firm has already installed transparent OLED displays in subway train windows in Beijing and Shenzhen, China) and Gauzy agrees.

“LG Display is pleased to showcase Transparent OLED displays designed for trains in the European market for the first time ever,” said Cho Min-Woo, head of transparent OLEDs at LG Display.

In recent years, LG has given us glimpses of prototypes of both transparent OLED displays and rollable OLED displays, but it was always in the context of technology we will see someday in the future. Now it seems the future is getting a little closer, as the company is showing off what it calls the world’s first 77-inch transparent flexible OLED display at the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in Los Angeles, and it shows that LG is making great strides with this type of technology.

Combining its transparent and rollable OLED display technologies, especially in a display this size, shows that LG is making great progress. The panel itself is capable of the standard Ultra HD (UHD) resolution of 3840 × 2160 with 40 percent transparency and can be rolled up to a radius of 80mm without any negative effects on its functionality. At first, you might wonder how transparency could work in your living room, but looking at the Ambient mode in Samsung’s latest TVs shows how it could be useful, blending into your decor rather than sticking out like, well, a TV.

“LG Display is proud to have a pioneering role in the 50-year history of LCD innovations by introducing world-first and world-best technologies such as IPS,” LG Display executive vice president and chief technology officer In-Byeong Kang said in a statement. “We will continue to create innovations in the display industry by establishing a new display paradigm with OLED technology and opening another revolutionary chapter of display history.”Watch LG’s 65-inch rollable OLED TV curl up like a poster, disappear from sight at CES 2018.

For the time being, most actual uses of these new transparent flexible OLEDs would be digital signage, similar to the transparent and mirrored displays Samsung introduced a few years ago. That said, the rollable OLED we saw at CES would fit well in your living room. LG isn’t saying when it might roll out these displays, but the company is definitely progressing quickly.

The idea of a see-through television may seem like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s not. The last decade saw several sci-fi-esque technologies been brought to reality. And transparent TVs are one of them.

A transparent TV is a television that you can see through. This may sound like something from science fiction, but they’re real and are becoming more common.

Xiaomi released the world’s first mass-produced transparent TV in August 2020, and they’re the coolest thing we’ve seen in TV manufacturing since the invention of plasma TVs.

https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7251228/type/dlg/sid/UUmuoUeUpU97935/https://www.youtube.com/supported_browsers?next_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D-Owze8dBuZw

Transparent TVs are made possible by two major see-through display technologies: LCD and OLED. We’ll talk about how these two technologies make transparent TVs possible separately.

All LCDs are transparent by default. That is, if you took apart an LCD, removed the backlight, and powered the display, you"d be able to see through it while it was working.

LCD screens aren’t left transparent because they don’t produce their own light, and as a result, need an external backlight to work well. Most backlight used to power LCD screens usually has a background. This background is what makes LCD screens obscure.

But with improvements in technology, LCD screen manufacturers have now found ways to create hybrid display systems. That is, using transparent LEDs to power LCD screens. This fusion of transparent OLED backlights into LCD screens eliminates the need for other light sources, potentially needing a background.

The use of transparent LED backlights instead of the traditional backlighting systems, which come with a background, is how transparent LCD TVs are made possible.

OLED displays are made of a couple of layers of transparent plastic sandwiched between two layers of glass, consisting of emissive and conductible layers. Electrical impulses travel through the conductive layer and produce light at the emissive layer.

OLED screens aren’t naturally transparent, as is the case with LCD screens but TV manufacturers favor OLEDs over LCDs because they don’t require additional lighting. OLEDs produce their own light, which allows the screens to be much thinner.

But it definitely takes more than just see-through displays to make transparent TVs. Xiaomi, in making its transparent TV, fits everything that normally goes behind the screen into its base. All non-transparent components used in making the TVs, like wires, chips, and panels, are fitted in its base, which no one really expects to be transparent.

Xiaomi transparent TVs were released in China in August 2020 and have been available for purchase since then. But here’s the catch, they’re expensive. Xiaomi’s Transparent TVs cost about $7,200 a pop. The retail price on AliExpress is even higher—the cheapest was around $10,000. So yeah, that’s what it costs to live in the future.

Transparent TVs are, no doubt, the latest and greatest thing in TV technology. They deliver a higher quality viewing experience with their transparent screens that have no glare or reflections. But the big question is, do you really need one of these in your home?

According to LG Display, the displays were used at the Young Collector’s Council (YCC) Party to show a video of different photo frames, providing guests with background visuals for their photos.

Admittedly, using a transparent OLED as a photo frame isn’t the coolest use of the technology and largely shows us how commercial businesses can leverage transparent displays, but it does give us an idea of how the technology could be used to revolutionize the living room TV in the future.

Although it’s interesting to finally see it in public, this isn’t the first time LG has shown off its transparent OLED models — they’ve made an appearance at a number of CES events stretching all the way back to 2016.

Before that, LG Display has talked about using transparent OLEDs as train windows and sliding glass doors — pretty much anything that should be a window when not in use is perfect fodder for a transparent OLED.

What does that mean for home use? Well, unlike the best OLED TVs out there now, a transparent OLED might mean that TVs don’t need to be placed on a wall or on a stand. They could be placed in the center of a room with a circle of chairs around it. They could also replace large bay windows in a home or, even, in a car one day.

That’s obviously just conjecture based on the applications we’ve seen from LG Display so far, but the implication there is that the technology could enable us to put TVs in places we’ve never seen before.

One of the big tech trends at CES 2021 could be transparent displays, and LG is leading the charge with a showcase of where its 55-inch transparent OLED technology could feature in our everyday lives.

Currently, LG is the only company manufacturering transparent OLED displays, but there are others making transparent LCD screens. LG claims that its OLED technology is superior, with its panels achieving 40% transparency, where as LCD only offers 10%.

During CES 2021, LG will show off its 55-inch transparent OLED in a number of ways, including seeing the panel being built into a frame that"s designed to sit at the foot of your bed.

LG says the frame containing the display and speakers can be easily moved around the home - although we"ll have to wait for more details before we can comment on whether that"s really the case.

What"s encouraging here, though, is LG is pushing a clear consumer concept for its transparent displays, which gives more hope to those looking to pick one up for their home in the future.

Two other scenarios LG will be showcasing at its virtual CES 2021 booth are both commercial settings. First up is the idea of having a transparent OLED display at a restaurant, where diners can view the menu and select their food via the screen, while still being able to see the restaurant behind.

The other example is the replacement of a traditional subway window with the 55-inch transparent OLED display, allowing commuters to view maps, and useful information on the screen while also being able to see through the display to the outside.

While all of this sounds great, it"s worth approaching transparent OLED displays with caution. We"ve seen previous transparent screens plagued by poor contrast and black levels, and while LG claims its latest transparent OLED delivers "clear image quality", we"ll have to wait to physically see it before passing judgement.

This isn"t the first we"ve heard of LG"s transparent OLEDs. Panasonic announced transparent TVs using LG"s panels in November 2020 - although they"re aimed at the commercial market, so you won"t be able to buy one.

CES 2021 runs from January 11-14, and we"ll be covering the virtual tech show live throughout the week to bringing you all the latest news and products - including any further details from LG on the availability, price and specs of its transparent OLED displays.

LG Display has come up with more uses for transparent screens with its innovative new concepts that will be on display at CES 2022: the OLED Shelf, Shopping Managing Showcase, Show Window, and Smart Window. The company is not to be confused with LG Electronics, as LG Display simply creates concepts that other companies can adopt and introduce to the market.

Its OLED Shelf, visible at the top of this story, consists of two 55-inch transparent OLED displays mounted on top of one another, with a shelf at the very top. LG Display says it’s ideal for the living room, where it can display art, a TV show, or one on each of the two screens simultaneously. Always on Display Mode ensures that the screen can stay on all the time. If there was a piece of art on display, that image could stay put just like a painting, all while blending into the wall behind it.

There’s actually room for you to put an actualpainting behind the screens, too, which you’d be able to see when they’re off. LG’s also devised a motorized sheet of opaque material which rolls down like a projector screen to make their images more vibrant and less ethereal. (Images viewed on transparent screens can sometimes look ghostly.) The pedestal you see in the image above houses some of the electronics, and the screens take standard HDMI input.

While the OLED Shelf is built for the home, LG Display says its Shopping Managing Showcase is meant for “luxurious” department stores. A transparent OLED display is attached to a sleek wooden stand, and when placed in front of physical products, it looks like it could create a futuristic shopping experience. It adds an overlay to the items behind it, which means storeowners could add graphics that highlight certain parts of their products, or even use the display to provide funky visual effects. We saw a video where flowy graphics drew our eye to one of the perfume bottles in the display above, giving it a lustrous halo effect.

LG Display also gave us a glimpse of its Show Window, another business-focused model that consists of four 55-inch transparent OLED displays that could be used to play up products in window displays — instead of window decals, stores could add digital text, which can easily be changed at any time. The company says versions of it are already on display at the new Musinsa fashion store in Seoul, as well as art exhibitions at The Smithsonian and at 180 The Strand in London, inside some subway car windows in China and Japan, and a Bulgari fashion show.

The company also showed off its Smart Window, another transparent OLED screen that can be for video calls or presentations in the office, however, it didn’t provide any images of that display.

Since these transparent displays are just concepts, we probably won’t see many of them in the real world, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re still pretty darn cool to look at — and LG Display says it’s ready to help customers produce some of them if they want. “If any of our customers want, we can provide [the OLED Shelf],” LG Display spokesperson Jean Lee tells The Verge, saying it’s ready for production. All of these displays consist of the same 55-inch 1080p transparent OLED panels with 40 percent transparency, which Lee says is on the company’s 8th generation display manufacturing process.

LG Display has been in the transparent display game for a while now, revealing its first flexible and see-through screen in 2014, and more recently, it showed off a transparent TV screen mounted to the foot of a bed. But it doesn’t just dabble in transparent screens — the company is also showcasing its half-moon-shaped chair with a built-in OLED screen at CES this year.
