MacBook laptops from Apple are some of the most beautiful and well designed – not to mention powerful, but just like everything else man-made they aren’t impervious to accidental drops, dings, and damage.
Thanks to the fact that they are made using high-quality construction materials (especially milled aluminum) they feel indestructible in the hand, but those gorgeous retina displays have the potential to pop and spiderweb just like any other screen out there.
Unlike most laptop computer repairs, the retina display on the MacBook is very unique, and as a result much more expensive to service. Lenovo, HP, Dell and all major OEM for PCs will utilize the same display across hundreds of models, and even that display is used across multiple years of laptops.
If you are unlucky enough to have a damaged screen, chances are pretty good you started to look into how much does it cost to replace a MacBook screen at the Apple Store – and the odds are pretty good you had a tough time hammering down concrete figures without bringing your computer into a store and having someone from the Genius Bar have a look. If you wanted to make an appointment with a Genius Bar, you can find that additional information here.
In this quick guide we hope to show you about how much you can expect to have to spend on MacBook repair going forward, the total “all in” cost for getting your screen replaced, and your computer back up and running.

There are times when your MacBook Pro might be in need of screen repair. This can be due to different reasons and no one is ever happy when things break – whether it be an unintentional accident or due to some sort of malfunction.
Any laptop has the potential to fail and your MacBook Pro is no exception. Some small repairs can be fixed up in a matter of minutes while other issues might take longer and cost quite a bit of money.
One MacBook Pro repair that may seem complicated but is actually pretty doable on your own, is a screen replacement. This type of repair may sound intimidating but once you know the correct steps to complete the job, it’s actually pretty doable.
If you’re lucky, you may never have to replace your MacBook Pro screen. Under normal circumstances, these screens are really quite durable and long-lasting and are meant to withstand a bit of wear and tear over the life of your computer.
First of all, Apple admitted that the 2016-2017 MacBook Pro models have the ‘Flexgate’ display problem and it was only two years later that the issue was revealed to the public. The display problem most likely won’t affect the use, but it doesn’t look good.
Meanwhile, accidents and heavy use do happen, unfortunately, and this can lead to your screen becoming damaged to an extent that it would be in need of repair.
The cause of most screen breaks is an accident. This could be something like dropping your laptop off of a table or desk or even accidentally hitting the screen with some sort of blunt object. Instances like these typically lead to a crack or multiple cracks in the glass that make up the screen.
Screens can also become blemished and scratched from steady use. Damage to the screen resulting from this type of daily wear and tear will build up over time and eventually cause your screen to look cloudy or scratched in appearance both when you are using it and when you look at the screen while the computer is powered down or in sleep mode.
If you’re like me, any small damage, crack, or faulty spots on your computer screen is not acceptable. I always want to get things fixed up and near perfect when they break.
Whether you have a small crack in your screen, a couple of large ones that make it almost impossible to see, or the screen is just scratched and blemished from a few years of steady use, a replacement screen is an easy option to make your laptop seem new once again.
If you attempt to complete the screen replacement on your own, you could risk voiding this warranty which is definitely an unwanted option in case anything more major happens during the warranty period.
The Apple Care Program is an option when you purchase your MacBook Pro. This program costs some money upfront but comes in really useful in case of an accident to your screen or any other part of your computer.
If your screen becomes damaged or faulty you can take it into the Apple Store and have them fix it up quickly and correctly without having to worry about it yourself.
If you did not purchase your MacBook from Apple there still might be warranty programs in place from the provider. Be sure to call the business or location where you purchased your MacBook to see if they can offer the fix under any sort of warranty or if they have suggestions. They might not, but it is always good to check in before undertaking the repair yourself.
In reality, it is not that complicated of a process and you should be able to accomplish the task on your own with the right instruction and a few common tools.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of trying to fix your screen, take it to a professional, but if you want to try it yourself, follow the steps below.
You’ll want to get everything in order before diving into this project so be sure to set up an area to work that is free of any obstructions, get all of your tools and materials in order, and clean the area of anything and everything that might be a source of dust or dirt.
The materials you need for this repair are: your MacBook Pro, the replacement screen (you can buy from Amazon or iFixit), a hairdryer, a screen cleaning cloth, and a suction cup.
Turn on the hairdryer and heat along the edges of the screen. Keep the dryer pretty close to the screen and this will loosen the adhesive holding it on.
After you have heated the screen, attach the suction cup to the screen by pressing it firmly to the glass. Lift up slowly and firmly and your screen should come off of the computer.
Using the cleaning cloth, buff, and polish both the display surface underneath the old screen and the new screen to be installed. Make sure to clean up any fingerprints and blemishes so your new screen looks new when installed.
Begin by removing the adhesive strips that surround the edge of the new screen. Heat these strips slightly with the hairdryer. Then, put the new screen in place and make sure it is correctly aligned. Press the edges of the screen with the cleaning cloth to better attach the adhesive.
Once the new screen is correctly in place, remove the plastic covering protecting the screen. Give the edges another round of heat from the hairdryer. Use the cloth the again press around the edges firmly. Your new screen is now installed!
Replacing a screen on your MacBook Pro is a repair that can be done by yourself pretty easily but should be done by a professional if your computer is under warranty or if you are uncomfortable completing the repair yourself.
Eric currently uses a 15-inch MacBook Pro for both work and personal errands. He did all the research and testing to make sure all the fixes and optimization tips shared on the blog are relevant to Apple’s latest macOS updates as well as fact-checking.
Your computer suffered some damage, or even just stopped working on its own, and now you need to have the screen replaced so you can get back to working on your MacBook. Calling Apple and other MacBook repair shops, you find the price for a screen replacement is close to the cost of buying a replacement computer.
Apple usually picks bleeding edge technology for their MacBooks, which means a higher component level cost. Combine this expensive component cost with Apple’s practice of combining multiple components together into an assembly when offering a repair. Now you have multiple expensive components that make up your even more expensive display assembly.
I offer MacBook screen repair at the lowest possible price by replacing just the broken component rather than the entire display assembly. If the entire display assembly needs to be replaced on your MacBook, I also offer that service at the lowest price I can offer.
I offer component-level repair of displays for most models. This means I can replace just the cracked LCD panel in your MacBook instead of having to replace the entire display assembly.
I offer MacBook screen repair for all MacBook Air models from 2010 through the new M1 2020 A2337 model. You can submit a quote request below if you are not sure what model you have.
I offer MacBook screen repair for all MacBook Pro models from 2009 through the new M series model. You can submit a quote request below if you are not sure what model you have.

I am a full-service repair shop, specializing in component-level repair. This means we offer services that most shops will not offer because of the difficulty level. A lot of Apple repair shops will repair computers by replacing entire assemblies. For example, if you have a cracked LCD panel and your MacBook but your glass and aluminum lid are fine, a lot of shops will replace the entire top screen assembly (lid, glass, isight camera, LCD, LVDS cable, hinges, etc) rather than just replacing the bad LCD panel. We work hard to replace just the broken components, making our services noticeably less expensive than most shops.
I got into the screen repair business when the White and Black MacBook were first released. Back in 2006, Apple came out with the design featuring white and black MacBooks. There were not a lot of shops that were offering LCD replacement on the MacBook computers for less than $350. We started offering the repair at $180 with our unparalleled 24-hour turnaround. Now there are a lot of shops offering repair services for cracked glass and broken LCDs on the MacBooks, but we continue to be one of the best quality repair shops in the nation. Over the years of offering this repair, we have found the best sources for replacement LCDs, honed our techniques of removing the glass (when necessary) without causing damage to the rubber trim that surrounds the glass, and found the best adhesive for installing the new components. We know it is important for you to get your computer back ASAP. For that reason, we offer a 24-hour turnaround on our repairs. We will have the computer repaired and shipped back to you/ready for pick up within 1 day of receiving your MacBook for repair.
No matter what is wrong with your MacBook screen, I can fix it! If you are unsure of the issue on your MacBook, please take a couple of pictures showing the damage and email them to me. We will review them and get back to you with exactly what you need to get the computer repaired.
Nathan did a great job on my computer! I had a 2020 M1 MacBook with a cracked screen. Other repair shops were charing me 500+ because they said the entire top portion of the screen had to be replaced. Nathan was able to only repair the screen for a lot cheaper and it was shipped and given back to me within a week! Amazing service, will definitely refer to friends and family.
Super fast, professional service at a great price! I messed up the LED on my older MacBook Air. It still works great and I don"t need it for anything other than basic browsing/email, so I was not wanting to replace it if it could be repaired. I shopped around locally and could not find anything that seemed worth it. But Nathan popped up on my search results and I decided to give it a shot even though I"d have to mail my laptop off to Michigan and hope for the best. From the get go, the communication was excellent and he offered several options at different price points with realistic assessments of what I could expect. I picked the new LED option knowing I would likely end up with a bright spot on my screen where the case was dented. Nathan mailed me a laptop box, I returned it, he completed the repair, and then he mailed it back with tracking. The whole process only took a couple of weeks, most of that being transit time (which I expected). The repair is amazing--the bright spot ended up being tiny and if anything Nathan led me to believe it would be much worse when he offered this option. I could not be happier with the service I received! If I ever mess up another computer (hopefully not lol), I will absolutely be sending it here to be repaired. Thanks!
I cracked my spiffy new Macbook Air screen when I shut it, not realizing part of the charger cord was on the keyboard, and it immediately broke (note: be *really* careful closing the Airs!! A single grain of rice can kill your screen).
After waiting a week for an Apple Store appointment, Apple quoted $500 to repair and no guesstimated turnaround time as they"d "have to order the screen and those are backlogged." Cool. (Also, get AppleCare+ if you"re prone to shutting your laptop recklessly)
I had some hesitation about blindly mailing my laptop to a stranger - especially because my screen"s crack gave me no ability to say, close my iMessage or Chrome tabs or lock access to my iCloud and photos - but Nathan turned out to be the real deal!
He wrote back to my many redundant emails within a few hours and turned the laptop around in less than a week for $299 + shipping. (I recommend prepaying him for the shipping label, as it was far cheaper than FedEx or UPS options).
I contacted Nathan after my computer slipped off my desk and onto the floor causing my screen to go almost half white. After sending an inquiry via his website, I heard back from him very quickly letting me know what the problem was (LCD panel) and how he would fix it. Two days later I received a box in the mail to ship the computer to him. I got an email from him when he received my broken computer and the next day he emailed again to update me on the process and then again to let me know that it was fixed - and had it shipped out the next morning. The communications from Nathan throughout the whole process were stellar. Any question I had were always answered immediately. I highly recommend Nathan, and if I were to need this type of service again, I would feel completely confident in sending any MacBook his way.
Nathan did an amazing job fixing my macbook air. I was quoted over double everywhere else i went and Nathan was quick and emailed me every step of the way. Not to mention, I originally shipped the mail in box to the wrong address and I notified Nathan and he quickly sent one to the correct address at no additional cost. I will definitely be returning here with any problems in the future!!! Cannot thank Nathan enough!!
Nathan was awesome! Was able to help me figure out and fix my problem in a few hours. Professional and very polite. Will definitely be going back with any computer needs in the future.
I run my own IT support business. I mainly focus on PC"s. I support mac but I do not work on the computers that require a glue/heat gun to take apart. So when I had a client who needed his hard drive upgraded on an All-In-One Mac, I called on THESE GUYS!!! And boy were they awesome. I mostly interacted with this "Nathan" person. He was professional and friendly. We are during plague times so he handled the dropoff/pickup of the computer very well. He wore a rag on his face instead of a n95 mask.. but he kept his distance so I was fine. (Nathan, if you read this, that rag is not protecting you. The virus goes RIGHT THROUGH that fabric. Research how N95 masks work) I dropped the computer off on a Wed afternoon and it was ready by late Thursday morning. They were fast and thorough. Good job guys! Thank you so much! I will be taking more of my machines to you when I have work I do not want to do. (:

The supply of these older Unibody MacBook Pro models is pretty constrained. Because the cost of a new screen is so expensive, it actually is not worth repairing with a new display. Therefore, we are currently recommending going with a used display replacement. If you request a quote, we will check to see the current pricing for different grades of used displays, and let you know what the total would be for the repair.
At EliteMacTechs, we specialize in mac screen replacement. We have been repairing Unibody MacBook Pros since they first came out in 2006. We are able to disassemble the computer and offer component-level screen repair. This means you save money and time by going through us instead of the Apple store! One is to replace just the glass, another to replace just the LCD, and a third to replace both the glass and the LCD. The first step is to figure out if you have just cracked glass or just a cracked LCD, or if both your glass and LCD are damaged.
If the image is distorted (lines, splotches of black, etc), but the damage is not visible when you turn the computer off, you have a damaged LCD panel.

A few MacBook users have reported a potentially serious issue with Apple’s M1 MacBooks. Stories of cracked LCD screens on Apple’s M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro, which launched in November 2020, have appeared in several places online.
Discussion threads about this problem popped up back in July 2021 on Apple’s Support Community and Reddit, with multiple users reporting similar incidents. These people opened up their laptop lids to find a cracked screen, black lines, and discoloration. The reason for the MacBook cracked screens still isn’t clear, with these folks reporting normal routine usage and no external damage whatsoever.
“I bought a MacBook Air M1 6 months ago and the screen cracked for no apparent reason. I left my computer on the top of my desk during the night and the next day I opened it the screen had two small cracks on the right which damaged the functioning of the screen. I contacted an authorized Apple center which told me Apple warranty would not cover it as it is a contact point crack; as if I have left something the size of a rice berry between the screen and the keyboard. It is absurd as I have nothing like it on my desk and the computer was properly closed as usual and didn’t move the whole night.”
“I have just experienced the same thing. On July 28th I closed my laptop to take the dog outside. I came back in and opened up the laptop and there was a crack. It was very confusing as I could not understand how this would have happened. Took the Mac to the apple store and was told right off the bat ‘I will tell you what you did here’ and it was explained how I must have closed the lid on something. When I said that did not happen they said I must have pushed down on it or held it wrong.”
Based on these reports, there is no single apparent cause for the cracks. Users have reported no external damage, pressure, or force applied to their device. A probable cause for the cracks could be debris present between the screen and Mac’s body while the screen was shut. This could have caused the crack in the screen, especially if the owner forcefully shut the laptop lid.
A cracked screen from debris is always a possibility with laptops, given their portable nature. However, it seems that the exact culprit is too small for affected users to have seen or noticed. This seems plausible since Apple has previously warned MacBook owners not to attach webcam covers to their laptops—since the cover creates an additional gap between the screen and the body, it may cause cracks.
Apple Support has told some people that they must have accidentally shut the laptop’s lid on a speck of something, like a small object “the size of a rice berry,” according to one user.
Another speculation on the cause of the cracks is the frame of the MacBook. It is possible that the frame holding the screen is too weak to properly safeguard it from the torque force experienced when it’s closed or carried around.
However, we think this is unlikely, as the design of the current M1 MacBook Air and Pro is the same as the previous generation. We haven’t seen any widespread complaints of any screen-cracking issues in that generation, so the chance of it only happening on the new model is low.
Unless the damage is minor, a cracked screen will likely result in a dead screen, rendering your device unusable. As such, you’ll want to get it repaired quickly. Your best bet is to go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Repair Center for a MacBook screen replacement or device replacement.
Some people have gotten lucky and were offered a free repair or replacement of their system. However, Apple support has told most victims of this issue that they are responsible, so the damage is not covered by the machine’s warranty. Charges vary between $400 and $800 for a new LCD panel installation.
If your Mac is covered under AppleCare+, the cost should be substantially less. A cracked screen with AppleCare+ currently costs $99 to repair. AppleCare also covers two incidents of accidental damage, which should include this specific issue.
AppleCare+ extends the included coverage to three years from one year, though you can also add onto your AppleCare+ coverage if needed. It includes two physical damage repairs every 12 months, with an additional charge of $99 for replacing the screen or outside the laptop.
AppleCare+ currently costs $199 for the M1 MacBook Air and $249 for the M1 MacBook Pro M1. If you compare this to your initial investment of at least $1,000 (depending on which MacBook you’ve purchased), it’s not too bad. In addition, this plan can save money in the long run if you’re particularly accident-prone. We would recommend purchasing protection if it fits your budget, especially if you can’t afford to pay for repairs.
Apple hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, nor has it introduced a repair or replacement program for affected Macs. Hopefully, Apple will soon acknowledge the issue and the cause behind it, along with a cheaper repair program for users affected by the random screen cracks. It’s already possible to see if your Mac has been recalled for some reason, which includes special cases like this.
Bursor & Fisher regarding the M1 MacBook cracked screens. Currently, Apple hasn’t posted any specific guidance on the issue, but that might change with the outcome of this lawsuit.
It’s a smart idea to keep your device clean and free of dust. Dust that accumulates on or in your MacBook can cause various issues, such as unexpected shutdowns, excessive fan noise, poor performance, and more. Thus, keeping your device clean and free from dust is vital to it running properly.
See how to remove dust from your MacBook or iMac for a guide on keeping your device clean. Otherwise, you should always avoid putting anything on your laptop’s keyboard, such as coins or your keys. It’s all too easy to slam your laptop’s screen and forget that something was under it.
An unknown issue is causing M1 MacBook screens to crack and, currently, there is no known fix apart from getting the screen replaced. If you happen to face the issue, your best bet is to take your system to an Apple Store and get it fixed. We hope Apple will publicly address the issue soon.

Apple announced yesterday that it would add replacement parts for its M1 MacBook Air and Pro laptops. Now, the store is back online after a brief period of maintenance, and now it offers replacement trackpads, displays, batteries, and more parts to fix your own computer.
This creation of the Self Service repair store has been a long time coming. Apple’s repair program was announced late last year, and the store officially opened earlier this year with replacement parts for recent iPhone models.
For the iPhone SE, 12, and 13, you could get replacement batteries, screens, cameras, and a few other parts. Apple also offered the ability to purchase or rent the first-party tools needed to perform the repair to Apple’s specifications. The repair manuals offered alongside the devices were extremely in-depth for the replacement parts available. One of the best parts of the service was the ability to rent all the tools necessary to repair your device for $49. For all the tools it offers, that’s a pretty good deal, even if you aren’t saving much money over getting it repaired by Apple.
Now, the self-service repair store is live with replacement parts for the M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro models. And Apple is offering a wide variety of replacement parts through the self-service repair program – everything from keycaps, fans, and speakers to the Touch ID, display, and mainboard in all its varieties from the base model with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD up to the highest end M1 Max motherboard for the 16-inch MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM and 8TB of SSD storage.
Something like a replacement screen for the M1 MacBook Air will run you $395, with an $88 credit after returning the original part. A battery for the same MacBook will run you $119, with a $22 credit for returning your existing battery. Having Apple perform a battery replacement would cost you $129 – so if you factor in first-party tools, you aren’t saving any money over just letting Apple repair it.
In addition to grabbing the tools and parts from selfservicerepair.com, Apple’s site hosts the repair manuals for the M1 MacBook Air, 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro, 14-inch M1 MacBook Pro, and 16-inch M1 MacBook Pro. These manuals are incredibly detailed – to the extent that those experienced with repairs may find them repetitive – but they are detailed enough to ensure that even someone who has never opened up an electronic device before could jump in and successfully perform a supported repair.
Once again, this is a great step forward for those who would prefer to fix their own devices, but it’s still far from a “perfect” repair program. As I noted earlier this year, you need to contact support to get repaired devices back to full working order after some repairs, and you need to reach out to support return and get a credit for returned used batteries. Nonetheless, I am glad to see the program expanding to more devices, even if I don’t expect many people to find the program in its current implementation very useful.
