CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIAApple today announced Self Service Repair, which will allow customers who are comfortable with completing their own repairs access to Apple genuine parts and tools. Available first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, and soon to be followed by Mac computers featuring M1 chips, Self Service Repair will be available early next year in the US and expand to additional countries throughout 2022. The MacBook Pro was first released in 2006, replacing the very popular PowerBook lineup. I remember being a little upset with Apple for making the switch to the intel processors, until I used one! After 16 years of the MacBook Pro, there are quite a few models that might need to get their screens replaced. The cost of the repair will depend on the year and model of the MacBook Pro, as well as the problem it is having with its screen. Below I will cover the most common models I see for repair and the cost of repairing each model. The A1706, A1708, and A1989 models are $329 for the screen repair. The A2159, A2251, and A2289 models are $429. The A2338 model is $429 for the LCD or $549 for the entire display.

Full Display Replacement. The cost to replace the entire display assembly on a 2020 MacBook Pro model A2338 with a genuine Apple display assembly is $549.

The 13” MacBook Pro is the model number A1989. This is one of the models that I am able to source just the LCD panel for the screen repair. By replacing just the cracked LCD I am able to save you money on the repair. Note this is an intel version of the laptop, so replacing just the LCD is all that is necessary for most situations. Although there are multiple parts in a display assembly, you may not need to replace all of them to get your computer fully working again. Knowing the basic parts that are required to complete your MacBook screen repair will help you select the correct repair for your needs.

When the computer is open, the image is displayed on the LCD panel which is the part of the screen you can touch. The LCD panel is the most commonly broken part on a MacBook Pro screen. If you have a cracked screen, you will most likely need an LCD replacement.

You will likely need to replace the entire display assembly if there are any bends or dents on the corners of your display. The full display assembly includes the LCD panel, the back housing where the Apple logo is, the clutch cover along the bottom of the screen where it says “MacBook Pro”, and the hinges.

The clutch cover is the part of the MacBook that runs along the bottom of the screen and says “MacBook Pro” on it. Sometimes, I see clutch covers that are cracked or broken, but the LCD panel itself is working fine. This means that if the computer works perfectly and the entire screen is visible and working, but there is a crack along the bottom of the screen in the part that says “MacBook Pro”, you just need a clutch cover replacement rather than an LCD replacement.

The MacBook Pro camera is not known for having issues. If the camera does stop responding, the issue is most likely with the cables that connect to the camera, or the logic board inside your computer. Sometimes though, the cameras will fail and require replacement. Unfortunately with the way these MacBook Pros are assembled, you usually have to replace the LCD panel when you replace the camera.

The back housing, which is sometimes referred to as the “lid,” is the part that has the Apple logo on it. Usually, the housing does not need to be replaced, but if there is a dent on the corner of the housing, a dent on the housing itself, or if liquid damage is present in the housing, then you will need the housing replaced. Again, because of the way these are assembled, you normally can’t replace just the housing by itself and have to replace the entire display assembly.

On older model Macs from the 2006-2012 era, the hinges connecting the display to the computer sometimes cracked or broke, causing the display to not stay up properly. This was much rarer on the newer MacBook Pros, but it can happen. Some models required an entire display replacement in order to replace the hinges, while others allowed the hinges to be replaced separately. Because Apple has started routing cables through the hinges, usually the entire display assembly had to be replaced if there are issues with the hinges.

Some things to consider when looking for a shop to complete a screen repair on a MacBook Pro include the number of years the shop has been in business, the quality of its work, and the price they charge for the service. With so many repair shops to choose from, doing your research can help you find the best possible option for your needs.

To see if a shop has a good reputation, ask your friends, family, and co-workers about their experiences and read online reviews. Google, Yelp, and Facebook are great resources for reviews.

The staff should be knowledgeable and friendly, making you feel comfortable enough to ask questions and trust them to do a good job. By calling the shop and asking questions, you can get a sense of whether or not they would be a good fit for you.

Get a few quotes from different shops to compare rates before making a decision – some repair shops are more affordable than others due to overhead or the cost of renting in a particular location.

If something goes wrong, will the shop’s warranty or guarantee cover you? Going with a shop that offers a 60-day warranty can give you some peace of mind.

What is the shop’s policy on data privacy? Make sure you’re comfortable with how your personal information will be treated before you give them your business. Some repairs require the technician to log in to your computer during the repair process, while other repairs do not.

How long does it usually take for the repair? Some shops take longer than others to repair your computer. As an example waiting for a display assembly from Apple usually takes 3-5 days.

Choose a computer repair shop that you feel good about after researching your options. A little effort upfront can save you a lot of hassle later on when you need your MacBook screen repaired.

If you have a MacBook Pro that is not covered under AppleCare+, you will spend between $575 and $900 repairing your screen through Apple. There are a couple of different ways that the display repair is billed, so the price you are quoted will vary, but these are the standard quotes. Note that each damage tier is added to by a labor charge, which is usually $100. So a display repair for a 13″ MacBook Pro is usually about $480 + a $100 labor charge. If you were to take your MacBook Pro to a different repair shop, the price could be significantly lower or higher depending on the shop you go to.

Tier 1 Accidental Damage does not usually cover the display. It is for other parts that might have been accidentally damaged like the touchpad getting cracked or the fingerprint sensor on the keyboard being damaged. Tier one is usually quoted at $280 + a labor charge at the Apple store, although I have heard it quoted as low as $230 +labor.

Tier 2 Accidental Damage does cover the display, as long as everything else on the computer is not damaged. So if there is a dent or any kind of damage on a component other than the display, it can not be repaired under tier 2. Tier 2 repair is usually about $480-700 +labor at the Apple store.

Tier 3 Accidental Damage covers the display as well as other components that are damaged, as long as the logic board is still working properly. This tier is usually $825-1000 +labor at the Apple Store.

When you buy your computer, you are given the option to purchase AppleCare+. AppleCare+ does partially cover the cost of repairing a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro. If you decide to purchase AppleCare+ and crack your screen, the total for the repair will be $99.

Apple stores replace parts on computers that are less than 7 years old; however, if your Mac is over 7 years old, you can still get it repaired, but you will need to visit a repair shop that is not an Apple store to have the service completed.

I don’t recommend that beginners or intermediate-level technicians attempt to replace the LCD on a MacBook Pro. It’s best to start practicing with bad screens before moving on to repairs like this. LCDs are delicate, and you can cause all kinds of problems during the repair, like scratching backlight sheets or ripping cables under the LCD panel.

The display assembly replacement is a lot easier and can be completed by somebody with some technical repair experience. Apple has a self-repair program that covers the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro. You can read about the program and get links in my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro screen replacement guide. The self-repair program is a great way to save money on the A2338 and A2485 models of MacBook Pro.

I will say that I have seen a lot of damaged screens when people attempt to repair the LCD panel on a MacBook Pro themselves. Normally, the damage is not fixable and you have to then replace the entire display assembly.

If you are experienced enough to complete the repair, you can find the panels on public sites like iFixit, eBay, Amazon, etc. As a shop, you will probably want to work with your vendor to get panels that have a guarantee so you can hold them in stock. The price for panels usually ranges from around $250 to about $550 for the newest model. Generally, the panels decrease in price with time, but sometimes if an LCD panel is not used frequently by apple, they will become rare and cost more over time for new ones.

You can repair a MacBook Air Screen yourself with the right tools, but it’s a moderately difficult repair. Unless you have some experience in repairing electronics, I don’t recommend trying to do it yourself.

Apple will replace the MacBook screen for free if there are no cracks or physical damage present, but the laptop must be under warranty or AppleCare+. Sometimes screens will stop working on their own, and these types of problems will be covered under your warranty.

Apple charges between $575 and $900 to replace most MacBook Pro screens if it is not under warranty. If you have AppleCare+, the cost to replace the screen through Apple is $99.

This is a great question to discuss with the shop you are thinking of doing the repair. Most of the time the answer is yes, it is worth repairing a MacBook Pro screen if the MacBook Pro is useful to you. The cost of the repair usually decreases with time, so older MacBook Pros will cost less to repair than newer MacBook Pros.

AppleCare+ generally does not cover a cracked screen completely. Rather it covers all but $99 of the screen replacement service. If there is liquid damage involved, then the charge is $299.

The national average cost for Apple repair services provided by independent technicians ranges from $45 to $140.Some repairs can be quickly diagnosed and completed, while others take more time. An Apple repair technician can also tell you when it makes sense to repair or replace your iOS device.

Professional Apple repair technicians can help when your desktop computer, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad or iPhone stops working or suffers accidental damage. Hiring an independent technician or company can be a cost-effective way to get your slow or non-functioning iOS device back up to speed — especially if the item isn"t covered under Apple"s warranty or AppleCare protection plan, or if there"s no Apple store in your area.

The most common Apple repairs are for Mac laptops and desktops. For laptops, most repair shops are asked to replace logic boards, hard drives and screens. The logic board is the foundation of the computer. Signs of trouble with your logic board are when your machine doesn"t have any power, or if it shows just a white screen or a beeping noise when it does power up. Common signs of a problem with your hard drive include a flashing folder with a question mark when you boot up or being unable to access your information. Another common repair is fixing iPhone screens.

Repair shops also report a lot of the spinning beach ball of death, especially when the hard drive is about five to six years old. If you have a pre-2012 Mac, most repair specialists recommend upgrading to a solid-state hard drive to give your computer a new lease on life. After 2012, Apple soldered the memory in and implemented a hard drive that"s proprietary to Apple, so it"s more costly to upgrade or replace.

Each company may have different flat or hourly rates, which vary based on the geographic location, the cost of living and the cost to do business in that region, the technician or company"s background and experience, and product-related costs such as model, year and materials needed.

Laptop hard drive replacement: $225-$250, depending on make and year. Repair time is typically 1-2 days if the repair technician has the parts in stock.

Replacing touch bar and logic board of late-model MacBooks: $1,200 and up. The high cost is due to the new technology of the touch bar. Once new technology has been on the market for a while, the parts become cheaper, making the repairs cheaper.

MacBook Pro hard drive replacement: $80 per hour of labor (typically 3-4 hours labor) plus parts ($75 for a 240-gigabyte to $260 for a terabyte solid-state hard drive).

The cost to replace a MacBook Pro hard drive includes backing up all data and files, removing any harmful information from that backup, updating operating system, reinstalling app system, reinstalling data and other conveniences like reconnecting the printers to their network. Newer model Apple-compatible hard drives are typically more expensive.

Common repairs for Apple desktops include replacing the internal fans or repairing damage to the hard drive. Internal fans keep the processor and the inside cool and prevent overheating. Your fans may need to be replaced if your computer is overheating, spontaneously shutting down or making strange noises.

The national average price to replace fans is $89-$199. Repairing the hard drive in a desktop really depends on the year and model of the computer. For example, the iMac is all-in-one, so fixing or replacing the hard drive can mean taking the entire thing apart. A national average price range for hard drive repair or replacement is $159-$459.

The minimum cost for liquid damage repair is typically $129. Computers are highly sensitive to water and other liquid damage. In addition to the moisture, the sugars or chemicals in sodas and other drinks can be corrosive to the delicate logic board of your laptop.

Many people try the DIY strategy of using dry rice to absorb spilled liquid, but rice only dries the surface liquid — not the water that sits under the chips. The technician will completely remove any liquid from the logic board using a special non-conductive solution to clean it and a process chemical to dry it. If the logic board is too damaged, it may need to be replaced.

Cracked screens and issues with visibility or errors often result from dropping laptops. The retina screens that are standard on later models offer extremely high pixel density, which creates a seamless viewing experience, but — like the touch bar — is a new technology that costs more to replace when cracked or damaged. Repair experts recommend always keeping laptops or iPhones in protective cases.

iPhone screen repairs are a common request, and most shops can replace a screen in less than 30 minutes. Thecost to repair an iPhone screen ranges from $29-$329. However, prices depend on the phone model and screen size — the newer and larger the screen, typically the higher the cost.

Battery failure, charge port problems, earpiece difficulties and data recovery are also frequent problems. Here are some examples of average iPhone repair costs, nationally:

Apple repair technicians may charge for pickup or drop-off services, or may include transportation in their fees. Many technicians will provide a free diagnosis and an estimate of repair costs for customers who bring a computer or device to their location. Viruses are now a real threat for Macs, which used to be nearly impervious to malware and ransomware. If you"re experiencing pop-up windows, a technician can help clean your computer. Apple pros can also provide software support for glitches, updates and installations.

Many repair outfits offer a flat rate, starting at a national average of $69-$89, or up to $129 if they also need to do a backup and transfer. A very simple repair might cost as little as $39.

For most virus removal jobs, many companies offer a flat rate of $90 to clean up a laptop or desktop and get you operating smoothly once more. Many repair experts recommend the Avast brand of anti-virus software, but there are many available to suit your needs. Anti-virus software and cloud-based storage are typically available for a monthly fee.

Flexgate is an unofficial term for display backlight related issues caused by a fractured display flex cable. This flex cable is what connects the display to its controller logic board (aka T-CON board). It is a very delicate part. Due to a recent design flaw, it now tends to break over time through repeated opening and closing of the lid.

This design flaw primarily afflicts the MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models. Both 13 inch and 15 inch models are affected.A1707 - MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016-17, Touchbar model)

Up until 2015, the MacBook display controller or logic board used to be tucked inside the hinge cover at the bottom of the display. It was part of the “lid”, so the wire connecting to it ran inside the hinge cover and was never moved or disturbed.

The flex/ribbon contains multiple cables. Usually the backlight cable gives way first, causing various backlight related faults. The damage progresses in stages:When the cable hasn’t broken but just some connection lines are worn off, it manifests as the stage light effect.

The next stage is when the cable is cracked but remains connected while it is loose. When you open the lid, the cable is stretched and the connection breaks. This is symptom #2 wherein the display goes blank when you open the lid beyond the half-way point.

Step 2: Quietly introduce a “fix” in the subsequent model. Apple discreetly increased the length of the flex cable in 2018 model MacBooks. Just by ~2mm. This would reduce the stress on the cable, thereby reducing chances of damage. Thus Apple tried fixing an issue they hadn’t acknowledged in the first place. Note: Jury is still out on whether this fix solves the problem or just delays the eventual failure. In our experience at Fixxo, 2018-19 models continue to face flex cable issues, however not in as large numbers.

Step 3: Introduce a replacement program. Finally, Apple couldn’t ignore the public backlash anymore and introduced a free display replacement program.

But wait ..  this program is valid onlyfor “13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model”, however it is amply clear the design flaw actually impacts both 13-inch and 15-inch variants of 2016 as well as 2017 models. Well..

If yours is a 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016 model, and the purchase date is between October 2016 and February 2018, you’re eligible for Apple"s free display replacement program. Congratulations! Take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider. There are a number of fake AASPs around, careful!.

If your MacBook isn’t eligible for the program, you’ll unfortunately need to get a paid display replacement. It isn’t cheap. A reputed non-Apple vendor may be your best bet.

Well, the cable is integrated into the screen, so it cannot be swapped out. So, the standard resolution offered is to replace the entire display panel.

I had a laser targeted infrared thermometer for another project ($25 at local hardware store) and found the screen cover adhesive softened nicely at top and sides at 140-145F. I used a hairdryer on high setting.

Meanwhile, True Tone technology adjusts the color and intensity of your retina display to match the light around you, so that what you see on your screen appears more natural. To disable True Tone:Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Displays. If you have more than one display connected, click Display Settings and then choose your display.

When inspecting a screen, remove any screen protectors and cases first. Tilt the device under good lighting conditions and inspect it at multiple angles. Screen damage includes hairline cracks that are difficult to see.

Mobile devices have a Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) to show if the device has contacted any liquids. The indicator is white when it"s new, and it turns pink or red when it contacts water.

iPhone® X and above do not have a visible LDI. If you cannot identify your LDI on an iPhone X or above, we ask you to confirm the device has not been exposed to liquid.

Wearables like Apple & Samsung watches often don"t have visible LDIs. Check for moisture under the display screen, as well as corrosion, discoloration, and fuzzy growth on the charging connection.

If the device does not fully turn on and load the home screen or if it cannot stay on without being connected to a charger, it"s considered not able to turn on.

First, check to see if the battery is charging properly. If it’s not, head down to where we talk about MacBooks that can’t charge. But if your Mac is shutting off randomly even with a healthy battery percentage, that indicates a different kind of problem.

If this shutdown happens, restart your Mac with the power button and wait for it to power back on and load MacOS. Once MacOS loads, choose to restart your Mac again. This allows your MacBook to perform a healthy, full shutdown procedure. Now try resetting your System Management Controller (SMC). This controls many of the important hardware processes of your Mac, like battery charging, sleep modes, and more. If something has gone wrong, resetting the SMC is a quick way to fix it.

If the SMC step doesn’t work and your Mac keeps on shutting down, it’s probably time to take it into an Apple Store. Depending on your warranty, you may be able to get a replacement.

A failed MacBook startup can show a few different colored screens, and each means something difference. If you see a black or blue screen that won’t go away, that’s a sign that your Mac probably froze trying to load a problematic app or login function. Restart your Mac by pressing the power button for around 6 seconds (if this doesn’t work, try booting in Safe mode). Then try removing any troublesome apps or login items that may not be compatible. But that’s worth testing. If you can get other video communication apps to work properly, the problem is with FaceTime software. First check to see if the device works properly on other computers so you can narrow the problem down to your Mac. Next, check to make sure that the device is properly plugged into the correct port on your Mac, and that the port and the cable are not damaged or blocked in any way. Finally, restart your MacBook and, if necessary, the device.

If these steps don’t fix the problem, then look up your device and check to make sure it’s compatible with your Mac, and plugged into the right version of the port. This can be an issue with older USB ports and newer devices. If everything seems okay, try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and SMCto see if maybe a settings glitch is interfering in device connections.

Still not working? You should also take the time to plug in another compatible device into the same port to make sure there’s nothing internally wrong with the port. If there’s a hardware issue inside your Mac that’s keeping the port from working entirely, then it’s time to take your Mac into the store.

Are you using Chromium or Firefox? Both these programs have been known to cause flickering issues in Macs. Trying disabling or removing these programs if you have them, and see if this fixes the issue.

First, make sure that it’s not a particular app that’s causing the problem. Do you still get reliable sound from other sources, like iTunes? If so, then the app may need to be updated or debugged to restore its sound.

If the problem happens to all sound on your MacBook, you have a widespread issue. First, try resetting PRAM/NVRAM and SMC to see if this fixes the problem. A settings issue may be preventing your audio from playing properly, and resetting these functions can clear it up.

Many slowdowns are caused by doing too much at the same time and eating away at your RAM, or filling your hard drive so full your MacBook is struggling to read and write data efficiently. If this is your problem, the best fix is a Mac upgrade, although clearing hard drive space and opening fewer tabs at once can also help. If your Mac is suspiciously slow and it really seems like something has gone wrong, there are a few things you can try:

Open up Activity Monitor and see if there’s an unexplained app running and taking up way too many resources. This could be a sign of malware or another issue. Removing the offending program should help matters

Start with the basics. Is the outlet working? Is everything plugged in? Does your charger and cable show any signs of damage, or are there blockages that are preventing the charger from properly connecting? Keep in mind, chargers and Macs can overheat and may need to cool down before charging properly.

If there’s still no luck, press down the Option key on your keyboard and click the battery icon on your menu at the same time. This allows you to choose advanced options in your battery menu, and check up on your battery helps. If the menu says to replace or service your battery, it’s time to take your Mac into the store for a closer look.

If you are having trouble turning your Bluetooth on, visit System Preferences and choose Bluetooth to make sure all your settings are working, and that you can keep an eye on devices that you have paired in the past. Sometimes it’s as simple as selecting Turn Bluetooth On in this menu.

If you can’t connect a fully power Bluetooth device, make sure your Mac is updated, and restart the MacBook and the Bluetooth device to see if this fixes the issue. If not, we suggest also moving to a more open area away from appliances and trying again: Sometimes bad interference can keep Bluetooth devices from working properly.

This is a problem with some MacBooks, particularly the 2016 versions. The keys would stop working, start making weird noises, or just feel off (this may be especially noticeable when the MacBook has heated up).

This is a widely recognized problem, and we recommend that you take your MacBook into an Apple Store and see if they will replace it. However, if you really want to try dealing with the problem yourself, then grab a can of air. Hold your MacBook carefully so the keyboard is vertical, and blow air between the keys. This can dislodge dust and may help fix some of your keyboard problems.

It isn’t uncommon that Macbooks fail to shut down because they freeze during the process. After realizing that your Mac is indeed frozen and cannot complete the shutdown process, you will have to check your Mac to see if open apps are causing the freeze. Open apps that refuse to close down will inhibit your MacBook from shutting down, so you will have to choose the force quit option for all frozen apps. If this happens regularly, try updating all your apps and see if this does the trick.

If shutdown problems continue, tryresetting the NVRAM and SMCto see if this helps.
