One cool thing about BMW Motorrad in 2020 is that at one end of the scale, you can get something like an S 1000 RR and on the other end you can get a G 310 R. Same color scheme, same nameplate, and they’re both motorcycles—but other than that, they’re completely different machines in almost every way, and they fill very different niches.

There are a great many Chinese companies that like to play fast and loose with design patents, as you’ve no doubt seen in the past. You’re about to see another one now, because even though BMW already has its very own tricolor, small-displacement baby sportbike, the very vaguely named Moto decided that it needed to make its own BMW ‘homage,’ as well.

Less an homage than some straight-up design thievery, the Moto S450RR didn’t stop at taking most of the design elements from the S1000RR to go and build its own twin-cylinder baby sportbike. Check out that roundel, where it slightly altered the BMW propellers and replaced those three letters with “M O T O” instead. That’s … a bold take! You almost have to admire the fact that they weren’t even trying to hide what they were doing, don’t you?

Vietnamese motorcycle website MotoSaigon first posted detailed photos of this small-scale copycat online, and noted that it appears to be powered by a twin-cylinder engine of unknown origin. It also features USD front forks, ABS, LED lighting, TFT screen, and some additional design elements lifted from the Yamaha R1 and Kawasaki Ninja 300. The first thing you see is BMW, but the longer you look, the more these small details reveal themselves—like that roundel, for example.

How successful will BMW be in pursuing legal remedies for this theft? We’re pretty sure that Dodge didn’t hop right on board with this tiny Tomahawk replica, but variations on it have been floating around Asia for years. I’m no lawyer, but it’s pretty clear that whatever this thing is, it is not actually a BMW, so it shouldn’t tarnish the company’s reputation in any appreciable way. If anything, it’s almost like bike cosplay in a really weird way.

Chinese motorcycle brand Moto has revealed its full-faired sports bike, the Moto S450RR, and it looks like a blatant copy of the BMW S 1000 RR, from the fairing design, colour scheme, the design of the headlights, and even the logo placed on the fairing, as well as the big RR decals on the bodywork. The bike has a full-colour TFT screen, clip-on handlebars, and even the stepped seat and the side-mounted exhaust is reminiscent of the BMW S 1000 RR. The upside down front suspension and rear monoshock complete the sporty design of the bike, and looks quite like the S 1000 RR it imitates. What"s different is, of course, what is under the skin.

But compared to the BMW S 1000 RR, what is a lot different is the price! In Vietnam, the Moto S450RR is priced at around 50 million Vietnamese Dong, that"s equivalent to approximately Rs. 1.60 lakh. Now, that"s the price you have to pay for a sportbike that looks like the litre-class BMW S 1000 RR!

The Moto S450RR is powered by a parallel-twin liquid-cooled EFI engine with a claimed power output of 26 Ps at 6,500 rpm and 22 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Other details are dual brake discs for the front with a single disc for the rear (both with ABS). It also has what looks like a 5 or 6-inch TFT panel screen, LED lights and a sporty exhaust can with a carbon fiber tip.

Like many other lesser-known Chinese motorcycle brands, there is not much information available for the Moto brand and their S450RR sportbike. One thing is obvious: the design, color schemes, and even the “RR” decal are all direct copies of the BMW S1000RR.

There"s big drive from the new Shift Cam system and that much is evident even on a wet track. Drive out of slow corners at low to medium revs is far stronger and as the system switches over to the full-load cam on the straighter bits of track you simply can"t feel the transition – but you can feel the surge in top-end power. It isn"t violent though, it"s refined – it"s not the sledgehammer delivery you"ll find from something like Ducati"s 1100cc V4, but we"d hazard a guess that the new S1000RR is still every bit as fast.BMW

Despite the inclement weather"s best attempts to dull the fun, there"s still other tidbits to be gleaned. The new bike"s narrower than the old one thanks to a revised frame, and comfier as a result. Just like the old bike, you can get on and go without any real need for adjustment, but it feels different. It feels smaller, lighter and quicker to steer than the old bike. The clip-on "bars are slightly wider set and a tad easier on your wrists than before. The heated grips now have three levels of heat, rather than two and the M sport seat fitted to the bikes we rode is properly grippy. The tank is still wide (but not too wide), meaning you can move around and grip with your knees without any issue. There"s a baffling array of buttons on the handlebars and even more options in the menu system, but you"ll get used to that with time and practise. The focus for BMW here has been weight saving, and several key components have been taken straight from the RR. The lighter and narrower Flex Frame chassis shaves 1.3kg, while the engine is also 5kg lighter than before.

Unlike many of its competitors, BMW has decided against chasing raw performance numbers. As such, the 999cc engine puts out a relatively modest 162bhp and 114Nm of torque (compared to the RR"s 200+ bhp).

Admittedly, the new BMW S1000R may not be the most overtly exciting bike. The engine doesn"t make the most exciting noise, the bike doesn"t have as much top-end intensity, and of course the unchanged power figures mean that you"re not going to be winning any kopitiam arguments.

However, what the new BMW S1000R lacks in sheer drama, it more than makes up for in expansive competence. In a sea of super nakeds, the S1000R stands out for its accessibility.
