We have a GE Profile refrigerator model #PSHS6TGXCSS. It was unplugged and moved to another plug temporarily due to some work we had happening in the house. When we opened the fridge we noticed the compressor isn’t running, it’s not cooling, the front display panel is not working, but the lights are on inside. We tried to reset it by unplugging and moving it back to its original outlet, but nothing changes- it is still not working. The crisper drawer broke very early on. Tech broke off the slider and said that is the fix. The blade broke off the ice maker propeller and I had to buy a new unit. The mother board went out and I had to pay because I let the warranty contract run out due to the cost (have spent over $400.00 on contracts). Air damper went out 3 times had to pay all 3 times. Now, water leaking from filter area. I don"t know the cost yet, I could not make appointment today. Last repair was just one week ago when the tech took out the filter to replace the damper.

GE Profile refrigerator cannot maintain correct temperature. It"s either too hot , too cold, and now not running at all. We replaced the condenser fan previously. This time, I am told it is the circuit board. No more G.E. appliances for us. Jack ** got the golden parachute and we got junk.

We, too, have a GE side-by-side refrigerator. Two or Three times in the past year have seen clear chunks of plastic in our glasses. My husband chewed ice and luckily did not cut his tongue. Why is it that they at least make the auger a different color if they intend to produce a plastic auger which could possible break off and dispense into a person"s glass? Non-breakable would be safer, but at least a colored piece would warn you.

This is the 2nd side by side GE refrigerator we have owned. They were both already in the new homes we purchased. We have had this fridge for 3 years now. We are having the same problem with this one as the last on. The freezer freezes and thaws until the ice maker freezes up. It does make the ice but the dispenser freezes and won"t dispense ice. And the ice will melt and freeze constantly. Then we have to take the container out and melt the ice to get it out. And then the whole process starts all over again. We are sick of it. Looks like GE knows they have a problem. Get it right!

I just need an operations question answered. About two years ago, I purchased a GE model GSS23QG/GSS23QS. I did not want the water line/icemaker hooked up. Now the red light for the water remains on. I need to know how to turn the light off.

I took delivery of a GE Profile refrigerator on 8/11/2010. I have had service out 4 times since then and had to have my compressor replaced already. Now GE refuses to come out anymore. I filed a complaint with them online, and here is their response:

In April 2006, my wife and I signed papers to buy a home in a 55 and above community in Arizona. On October 12, 2006, we closed on the house with all GE Profile Appliances except for the washer and dryer. Beginning of this year 2010, we started to have problems with the refrigerator not cooling properly. It was causing ice build up from the ice maker down through all the shelves creating a large ice cube. So I called a repair technician to give us and idea of what was wrong with the unit.

After talking to him and explaining the problem with the refrigerator and freezer temperatures rising and falling some times nearly 10 degrees, he said it was the mother board. When he made the repair, I told him of another problem about the build up of frost/ice that is located to the left behind the chiller drawer. He said that he had to order a part and install it which was a small heat pad that was placed over the area where the coolant lines ran because the refrigerator was poorly designed. In questioning these repairs, he said that he had done several of them in our area. After the repair was made, I started talking to our neighbors to find out that several of them had the mother boards replaced.

In our development, we have nearly 1,350 homes and the builder is still installing GE Profile units. Looking back at the issues that we had with the refrigerator, I really wish that we would had never had them (GE Profile Appliances) installed. I have heard through our area that people have had problems with the stoves, micro waves and dishwasher. By looking at several web sites, I have seen that there are a lot of complaints with these appliances. I wish that something could be done rather than just complaining about them.Read full review

My GE refrigerator has been slowly dying for several years. We stopped being able to use the ice maker about three years ago after a visit from a Sears rep who was here to repair the microwave which never worked properly again and we eventually had to replace. I walked in and the repair guy had my freezer open. When I asked why, he responded that he was just checking the model number. What I didn"t realize is that the model number is not in the freezer side, it"s on the refrigerator side. Anyway, I think he sabotaged the freezer because within two weeks, the ice maker was not working properly.

When we called, the service person said that there was a recall on the lining around the doors, but by the time we complained, the recall period was over. Over the last several weeks, ice has been building up in the freezer, to the point that I had to take everything out and defrost it. I"m not sure if GE has a new manufacturer, but our old refrigerator, also GE, but about 13 years old, is in great working condition. This new one is terrible and we could not get good service from GE or from Sears.

I would not recommend buying a GE product and I would definitely recommend against warrantying any appliance with Sears. They never send the same tech, so that you always start from scratch with a new person and the issue never gets resolved. It"s a game so that they never have to pay out.Read full review

I purchased a GE Profile side-by-side refrigerator in August 2007 and have had numerous problems with it. The main problem is the computer component and fan located inside the refrigerator side. Ice continually forms around it and the fan begins to hit the ice and make a very loud (sometimes sounds like a small aircraft) noise. I have had a serviceman come out 7-8 times for this problem. The problem still exists, ice is beginning to form again and it is just a matter of time before the fan will hit the ice chunk forming.

I have had a serviceman come out and repair/replace the ice maker 2 times. And I had a problem with the fridge/freezer not maintaining proper temperature. I have had the water dispenser drip tray replaced 3 times because it begins to mold and if I try to clean it, the finish begins to come off. A white plastic cover just recently broke off in the freezer cheap plastic! I can"t wait to replace this piece of junk. I bought a GE Profile Counter Depth refrigerator (Model: PFCS1NJX) about 18 months ago. In June 2010, the cooling became erratic. I called the service department after checking online and a service man came. I spent $178 for his three minutes of service. He said that the problem was probably with the thermostat. Also, the fridge"s bad design is unavoidable to not block if the shelf is full. The new design has a large gauge allowing air flow around the thermostat. After having five GE kitchens, never again.

I purchased a new condominium in November 2007. It came with GE Profile series appliances. I had one previous GE appliance that was junk so I tried to get the builder to remove the appliances and let us put in our own and they would not. Sure enough, within a year of owning the unit, the refrigerator stopped cooling, both the fridge and freezer. We called service and they were prompt, came out and replaced a circuit board in the unit. The technician told us that he replaces about a dozen or more of these boards every week in GE Refrigerators.

This is a vacation home for us and we are not there all the time. The fridge had stopped working about a week or two before we came for vacation and there was mold and melted food all over the freezer. Luckily we do not keep much food in the fridge or freezer when we are not there since this incident, we keep no food in the fridge when we leave. There was no apology from customer service or the repairman or any offers to compensate for the food lost or cleanup. They did replace the part for free. The big deal is that it was a bad part and they should. Now, a year later, my mother-in-law is staying in the unit and she calls to tell me the same thing is happening again.

I called GE customer service on a Sunday and was told they don"t make service calls on Sunday as the technicians don"t work on Sundays. I mentioned to her that my GE fridge has the same attitude as it doesn"t work on Sundays either. They scheduled an appointment to service it on Monday and now my mother-in-law has to hope the food stays good until Monday. Why would you not schedule service work on Saturdays and Sundays when most people are home? Why make people sit around during the week waiting for a repairman and taking time off from work to wait for someone?

I wish we could afford to throw this fridge away and replace it. If there was room in the dumpster, I would toss the garbage disposal and dishwasher in with it also. They are both horribly designed, noisy and very awkward to load. It almost seems like GE designers took great time and effort to design a dishwasher rack that will not hold dishes well as everything that gets loaded tends to fall over or not load without a few moves and adjustments to get it to stay and not tip over. It appears from my research on the Consumer Affairs website that GE Profile refrigerators have a common problem. We purchased ours in 5/07 and the freezer and refrigerator temps have been unstable. The motherboard seems to be a common part to replace. However, on ours they replaced the 23 thermostat. They were going to charge us $351 but reduced it to $124. Is there a class action suit on this product or recall?

In July of 2007, my husband and I purchased a counter-depth GE Profile fridge at Pacific Sales in Torrance, CA. The fridge is side-by-side with a door water/ice dispenser. In the summer of 2009, the fridge stopped being cool. We called a repairman who told us the fridge was made in Mexico, and that all the fridges made in Mexico tend to have this problem. The repairman said that the only thing we could do is replace the motherboard, at a cost of $600-700. But doing so would provide only a 50/50 chance of fixing the problem.

We decided to think about it, and the fridge cooled down and was okay for a few weeks, and then warmed up. It"s been cycling like this since the summer of 2009. I just couldn"t get up the nerve to spend $600-700 to replace the motherboard when the repairman couldn"t promise more than a 50% likelihood of this fixing the problem. So, we"ve used our garage fridge for everything that needs to be cool (using the GE Profile for things like fruit and condiments). However, the freezer on the GE Profile is now on the fritz too. When I took the ice cube bucket out yesterday, a ton of water spilled all over my favorite suede boots. So, I"ve had it! A fridge should last more than two years. It seems like fraud to sell a fridge for $2,000 plus and not inform people that its shelf-life is only a couple of years.Read full review

I called at least 3 G.E. reps and not one would admit that there was a recall on motherboards or fan and compressor. I have been without fridge for 3 days now and expect at least 3 more. Finally when I called, they said they would pay for the service call and the board but I had to pay for the hours worked to repair, even if that meant coming back. I have lost some food and lots of sleep.

The first week we were in the new home, our oven broke. The igniter was burnt out and had to be replaced. While the GE technician was here, we also mentioned that the bottom "stop-latch" on the right side fridge door was not stopping the door when we opened it. The door would just bang into the granite countertop. Then we mentioned that one of the wheels had come off of the bottom dishwasher rack. He suggested we purchase a GE warranty (which we did to the tune of $1,300) that would cover "all" issues that were not cosmetic.

I called yesterday to have someone come out to repair the dishwasher drawer and the refrigerator door and was told that the warranty would not cover these two issues as they were not defects. Since then I pulled out the dishwasher drawer to see if the wheel could be put back on and found that the heating element in the D/W had burned the wheel off. The rear wheel is now in danger of coming off. We can see where the rack has been melted in the location right over the heating element.

I contacted a friend from our hometown, who is a GE repairman and he told me that the company who handles GE"s warranty contracts sold all the contracts to another company and that company does not know what is covered and will do everything they can not to have to make good on their warranties. I"m so disappointed and disgusted with the whole GE line of products. I"m glad I bought Samsung front load washer and dryer—no problems with them! $1,300 for warranty—what a rip off!

P.S.: We, too, had the conversation about dishes not getting cleaned. I use the proper jet-dry detergent and run the water in the sink to get the water hot enough before we run the dishwasher. Seems to be cleaning fine now.Read full review

We purchased a GE profile 25.5 Stainless side by side on 3/31/07 from Home Depot for $2,872.94. Recently, the temperature in the freezer would not remain constant and the ice melted all over the freezer. This morning, the circuit board was replaced for $292.44. I was a loyal GE customer but that will be my last GE appliance. Obviously, you don"t get what you pay for these days and I am very disappointed. Also, the tray beneath the water dispenser is cheap plastic that always looks dirty.

My husband and I purchased a GE refrigerator in August 2004. Approximately one year later (after the warranty had expired, of course), the fridge and freezer section would not stay cold and the freezer door was so hot you could not keep your hand on it. A technician made a service call and determined that the circuit board needed to be replaced. This cost us $243.15. My husband called GE to complain and got the runaround from seven different people with no satisfaction. In August 2010, the exact same problem occurred. This time, it was not only the circuit board which needed to be replaced but also the condenser fan motor. The bill was $482.33.

To date, we have spent $725.48 on a refrigerator which cost twice that. We will never again purchase a GE appliance. It is obvious that GE does not stand behind their products and in fact, is in the business of "planned obsolescence". My wife and I purchased a new home in 2004 and with it, the GE 20, 22, 25 side by side refrigerator installed by the builder. Since then, we have had to replace the motherboard twice after it failed to keep food cool. Each time the repair was above $400. This week, on 9/6/2010, the cold is once again dying away. We have been forced to purchase another refrigerator (not a GE!) because this mother board problem seems to reappear in three-year cycles. We"re hoping our food won"t go bad during the two days we"re waiting for delivery.

I have 27 service calls on my GE Profile Artica Refrigerator since 2002. I could spend days writing about everything that has happened to me, i.e. lost wages, taking off from work to meet with repairmen, lost food, food illness due to temperature problems in the fridge, all as a result of GE"s negligence. I am furious that Obama rewarded GE $100 million dollars of our taxpayer’s money. So much for Main Street, huh? I have had 6 service calls on my GE Profile Double Ovens and flat top cook top. Two of which involved burning wires and a serious fire hazard to my home. I bought all of these appliances new. The chances of me buying anything made by GE ever again in this life, or the next, is about as slim as Sadaam Hussein being resurrected from the dead.

I submitted a complaint in 2009 regarding the GE ice dispenser defect, which resulted in plastic shavings being deposited into our ice. GE sent out a tech who replaced the little cup at the back of the ice receptacle. Well, it has been exactly one year later, and the plastic has once again failed, and no ice is being dispensed. When will this end? I am getting angry!

But if it happen again, call and someone would come that same day. Not true. It happened this morning. My refrigerator is not cool at all and I was told the earliest would be Mon. 30 Aug 2010. My grandson is three weeks old and my daughter freeze the breast milk. I"m not happy with this refrigerator at all. Please help in any way you can.

Fridge is just past the 5 yrs and we have repair men out to fix the ice dispenser twice and now believe the mother board is gone. We"ve been without a fridge for 4 weeks, repair men can not seem to get it fixed. Cooling system is acting up. Is there a recall? Is there any compensation? Who do I contact from GE?

On February 9, 2010, I had a major disaster in my home caused by the GE refrigerator Model GSS25LG. The water filter exploded causing extensive damage to my home on the main floor, furniture and the basement. The extent of the damage was over $12,000 including labor. It took approximately 4 months to get things back in order and still this refrigerator is a threat to my home. The temperature control does not work properly and the water line is not working (I keep it turned off) plus it makes a very strange noise. I understand this particular model has been found to be faulty. I"m constantly checking it and get very nervous when I hear a sound from it. This is very stressful.

The damaged water filter was sent to GE by Allstate Insurance Company in February in order to recover the deductible and the amount of the claim. So far nothing has been done. GE just doesn"t care about their customers. We purchased 5 new GE appliances for a new home in January 2010. Since then we"ve had a few issues with them, which is not what angers me. Here"s what I"m annoyed about: when you call GE for service, you are put on hold for 15-30 minutes; then you get an agent who asks name, model number, serial number, etc., all the while they have this info on the screen in front of them. And if you speak to a supervisor, they will ask exactly the same questions again. They have this info in front of them as the number you"ve dialed in on takes them to a screen that has all your info.

We"ve had issues that they continue to send someone out to fix with both the refrigerator and range. Range was fixed. Refrigerator has not been fixed after 5 appointments, of which they showed up for 2. Yes they miss appointments. And after you phone in (this takes 15-30 minutes to get an agent), you find out that they took you off the service list as they had "too many calls" that day. It would be nice if they notified their customers!! Have spoken with their customer relations department agents, who all apologize for their poor service, missing appointments, etc., and say that they will check the records and get back to you. Don"t wait for one of these phone calls as they never will call you back. You"ll need to call them and will find out that they still can"t seem to fix the issue.

So we"ve had many service appointments, which they only showed up for two. Lost wages for the time we took off of work and now I"m speaking to the corporate office (a telephone number that no one will give you! 203 373-2211). These folks are just as inept as the others we"ve spoke to. The issues with the fridge are still there (freezes in the refrigerator section, dispenses warm water, water tastes bad, guess their filtering system does not work). Did have someone in customer relations tell me that if they could not fix the issues, they would replace the refrigerator. Corporate office told me that "he wasn"t authorized to tell me that." Four or five years ago, we purchased a GE Profile Refrigerator and GE profile dishwasher from Corning Building Co, aka CBC. We paid cash in March. Appliances were ordered, or so we thought. In June, I contacted CBC to see when the appliances were coming in. They had no record of me ordering them. After about one and half hours on the phone, I was transferred to owner, Mark S. He was no help and had the attitude, "There are other customers." I took into his store the next day, proof of purchase and the cancelled check. Mark S. stated the person I was working with quit. Not my problem. The ball was dropped.

After I prove my case, another set of appliances were ordered. About July 15th, I called to see the status on my order, oh they were coming in from Mexico and they should be here by end of month. The appliances never arrived until labor day weekend. CBC delivered the appliances and installed them. All is well, right? Nope. The refrigerator was broke, damaged, whatever you want to call it. Did not know it was functioning less than perfect, as it started out getting cold. I went to work fixing food for the busy Labor Day weekend. I had a houseful of family and friends in for the holiday weekend.

When we got up the next morning, we could smell something funny but just thought it was the newness of the new appliances. Opened the door to the refrigerator to find jello melted, milk warm, mac salad and potato salad were not able to be saved. This also included all meat and fish. I called the store and I was told there was nothing they could do. A family member who is a lawyer, called the store and the result, "We can give you a loaner, apartment size. But you need to come and get it, as there is no delivery service today." Mr S. would not help with the loss of food. The person I had hire to get the loaner, he was less than helpful. Of course, another GE Profile was ordered. It came in in October.

Now the problem with this Profile GE, burnt out circuit board, broken water line. Again, I lost food in the freezer and the items I had in the refrigerator such as mayo, milk, eggs, the meat I had gotten ready for dinner that night. Cost for labor and replacement of parts is the cost of a new smaller refrigerator. I will never buy a GE product again. Of course I would never buy from or recommend CBC Building Co in Corning, NY. The other problem, maybe if these items were built in America, we would not have a high $2,000 price tag on a piece of junk made of cheap imported materials.Read full review

I have a 2 year old GE Side By Side Model GSHS5PGX/GSHF5PGXAESS. Just after one year, the ice maker made a bunch of ice, which is more than usual, but it never worked after that. I did all I could to fix it myself and ran the diagnostic test from website. Nothing worked. A year and many bags of ice later , I"m giving in to have a service tech come out. I"m sure he/she will say, "You need a new ice maker and you have to pay for labor and cost of parts."

I have a 20-year old fridge (Kenmore $380.00) that"s still running strong and never paid another dime on it! Once again, we have American companies to blame for greed and building stuff in another country and not here! I spent time away from work and service calls that cost almost $100. Don"t know how much it will cost me in labor or parts. It is only a 2-year old fridge and paid over $1500 for it but I thought it would be trouble free for a lifetime. I have had our refrigerator repaired 4 times in 10 years. We paid $1800 for the fridge plus had custom cabinet panels put on it which cost another $1500. We have spent $1560 for repairs. The last repair was a little over a month ago and I ended up purchasing a warranty on it. Now its acting up again. The digital temperature gauge in the fridge is not working. Our dishwasher went out last year, again a GE appliance. Our microwave went out 6 years ago, again a GE appliance. My dryer went out last year and I ended up buying an new one. The old one was GE. I bought a Maytag at Sears. Oh, also the washer is now going, a GE appliance. I will never purchase another GE appliance in my life again!

After only four years, my GE Profile refrigerator quit today. It had been having trouble getting started for about 2 years, every few months taking longer and longer for the compressor to kick on and making all kinds of noises until it got started. Today, it made the usually noises but never kicked on. In this day and age, I believe after spending over $2000 for a refrigerator, it should at least give you 10 years of carefree service. My experience has proved that GE Profile refrigerators are not that reliable. Without any doubt, this GE refrigerator will be my last GE refrigerator. In fact, I"ll never buy another GE appliance again. If you are shopping for kitchen appliances, I suggest that you stay away from GE.

I have a GE profile stainless steel freezer at the bottom. Had it repaired last Saturday June 28 2015. It was completely not working, rrpairman replaced the motherboard. Both freezer & fridge was working great, now the fridge is little cool temp climbin. Could it be the outlet it was plug in a UL extension cord. Thank you for your response. Dianne ????

Sorry to hear about your troubles. What is the average temperature in the refrigerator and freezer? From what I understand, it is perfectly normal for the temperature to fluctuate a bit. For example, my freezer temp swings anywhere between -4 to 5 degrees.

As far as the extension cord is concerned, as long as it is rated for 15 amps or more (it looks like one of those heavy duty extension cords, not those skinny two prong ones) and it is not too long (like a 50- or 100 feet long), I don’t think it should matter.

Hi kevin, my refrigerator has the same symptom. But my compressor is on when I put hand on it. So far ohm’d compressor all 3 readings read the same 8 ohms.my is Electrolux ei28bs56 could not tell which pin is inverter signal on mother board. I’ll check orange and black wire for 115 or 240 vac. Any other suggestions to help. I do have hand held meter that can check pulses but when I unplugged 3pins plug out from compressor and probe acrossed combination of 3 pins and I did not get any pulse reading. I believe it has to be one of the 3 to dc negative

Hi Kevin. I have a GE Profile Stainless French Door Fridge that the fridge temperature started to drop then the next day the freezer went as well. I saw a youtube video that explained the exact same procedure as you went through. I tested the J15 jumper and the compressor pins and all readings seemed acceptable so ordered a new inverter assembly. Installed it and over the next 24 hours, the freezer/fridge temperatures went from 65/61 to -5/58. The freezer seems to be working again but not the fridge. I think the minor change in the fridge temperature was just due to the cold ambient temperature of the freezer. Any thoughts on why the fridge is not working again?? Fridge is only 5 years old and hate to accept it is done so quickly. Thanks for your help.

Hi, thanks for your guidance, there is an odd things in my EG fridge, because after defrosting my EG freezer the fan continuing to work! but when I turn off power for a moment, the fan of defrost stops and everything turn to normal (it is ok) . but if I let the fan continue, it works until reducing the temperature and the motor start working again. I am going to find the wire of that fan to cut or… I don’t know what ‘s happened. Board and thermostat are ok.

thank you Kevin, there are 5 wires related to all fans in one part, but It is not easy to find the one that causes the specific fan continuing working! now I turn off for a moment when a quiet weak noise heard, the moment turn off stops it and that is ok but it is not the solution way.!

I wonder when it is on and works properly but when compressor finished the work and stops, I can hear a weak noise of a fan working at tope of fridge behind the ice-maker of freezer, it is odd and astonishing in the moment when I power off for the moment the fan noise stops.. I am trying to find the wire related to that fan if there is any joined and short circuit.

My ge profile french door refrigerator is not cooling enough the technician said to unplug for 24 hours said it is the motor he said he replaced the motor & sensor. It started to cool but i have a hunch he did not do anything as took so fast i was not there when he fixed it i asked to give me the old part & he said he will but on the receipt it just said sensor & charged me a lot. Am i right to complain?

You also should get a detailed itemized invoice which should include costs for individual parts as well as a labor charge line item. You should not be paying for any item(s) that are not on the invoice.

HELP! My GE profile refrigerator stopped working about 10 days ago, freezer working fine. Repairman came and ordered mother board & fan, he will return on 7/20 to install. Well the refrigerator suddenly started working again today & not sure what to do. The display on refrigerator still shows the cooling system is off- even when you try to turn it on it still says off- but the refrigerator is up to 34, freezer at -2. Should I proceed with repairs? or return parts and pray it continues to work?

our RV guy said the HRS IS FLASHING , the problem is no one in our region will even come to look at it because its in a motorhome, although the motorhome is all electric . our rv guy he would pull it out for them. There is no way we can get it out of the motorhome, we live in Calgary AB any answers thanks.

I do not have a direct experience with that model. However, a quick Google search led me to here (https://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/threads/15886-FIXED-GE-side-by-side-blinking-HRS-clicking-noise). Though the model is different, your issue sounds similar to the poster’s problem.

All readings on compressor and Mother board come out with in specs. Replaces inverter and all thermistors. Fans working, condenser gets a little warm but never cycles on. Fridge is still warm. Now what?

My GE Profile Mdl: PFSS9PKYASS was not cooling when I returned from vacation. The front panel was flashing 76 71. Seems that was the temperature in the freezer and fridge. I unplugged it and then plugged it back in. Numbers were no longer flashing, but it won’t cool. Al lights, the panel and fans are working.

1. using this test mode, check the thermistor which sends temperature readings to the control board; if the self diagnostic mode does not detect them, it means these components have possibly failed. You should first replace these (they are relatively inexpensive). part number is DA32-00027B

3. check the condenser fan motor (located over the compressor). It needs to be fairly clean to cool the refrigerator. You should try turning the fan motor blade by hand to see if it will turn freely. If it does not turn with ease, you need to replace it (part DA97-07754C). While at it, vacuum the coils.

4. check the continuity on the compressor using your multimeter. there should NOT be an open circuit. Read bullet #2 in the “How to fix a GE profile refrigerator that is not cooling” to see how you can test it. Just know that this component must be replaced by a licensed tech

5. as far as logic boards are concerned, I do not have access to the technical info. But I see that it has two parts (main PBA part #WR55X10965) and (inverter part # WR55X10960). Just buy them both from either RepairClinic.com or AppliancePartsPros.com as they both have 365-day return policy so that you can return the items you do not need.

I do not have my manual Can you please post some pictures step by step on how you were able to get to the compressor and motherboard? My Refrigerator is running and I believe the fan blades are spinning. i hear a quite hummmm that tells me the refrigerator is running. All the lights come on and my front display is running my photos.

I have a GE Profile side by side, french door freezer on the bottom (model PGSS5RKZSS). About 2 or 3 weeks ago it started rising in temps. Freezer would get up to about 35 F and the fridge would be about 65 F. After a day or two, it would start working again and cool properly. Then repeat. Repair guy has replaced the control board, and the inverter. Problem still remains.

It’s funny you left this comment because MY refrigerator stop cooling again for the third time! Lights and fans are working so my guess is the inverter board went bad again so I ordered a replacement that should be here in couple of days.

As far as your situation is concerned, did you make sure to get the bad part when the tech made the repairs? I have had some bad, unscrupulous dudes so I always make sure I get the bad part back.

I’ve had this same issue with the lower part of my fridge freezing and top not cooling properly. The problem is that your evaporator fan is not working properly (cooling too much by constant spinning 24hrs.) GE is aware if this manufacturing defect and will replace it free if you contact GE and make a service appointment.

GE profile side by side. When outside temp goes above 70ish, evaperator coils freeze up. Defrost heater works in diagnostic mode. Thermistors all pass diagnostic mode. Cleaned condenser coil it was pretty dirty. Any ideas as to what could he the problem? The fridge works great in the winter but this is the second summer in a row where this freezing up is happening as the outside temp rises.

I have a pgcs1pjxass. I have lights and fan but no cooling in either the fridge or freezer section. But I’m confused by your instruction at Step #4. How do you get a voltage reading at J15 if the fridge is unplugged? Without power to the motherboard, I would expect to get a 0.00vdc, which is what I’m getting. BTW, the compressor studs checked out fine. So I think it’s the motherboard or inverter.

Take multiple measurements of your space (rather than the existing fridge) to find the maximum width, depth, and height. Seriously—take multiple measurements of each dimension in case your floors turn out to be crooked. Remember to measure any baseboards or trim.

Build in some buffer space for ventilation. Make it about 1 inch on the top and sides and at least 2 inches at the back. If you jam your fridge in tighter, the fridge’s heat exchange might have to work harder than it was designed to. That can hurt its ability to hold the proper temperatures and might wear out the cooling system faster than its intended lifespan (usually 10 years, according to most manufacturers we’ve talked to).

Measure the rest of your kitchen. The layout of the rest of your kitchen matters, too. If you have a kitchen island, measure the distance from the wall to the edge of that counter to account for the door swing. So, even if a deeper, standard-depth fridge fits your space, we think a counter-depth refrigerator is worth considering. According to our analysis of customer reviews, people who own counter-depth fridges (most models, anyway) usually find that the fridges have plenty of capacity, and they tend to be equally happy with their fridges overall. Counter-depth fridges are also arguably easier to organize and look better in most kitchens, plus they tend to use a bit less energy.

After size, you get to decide what else is important to you, in whichever order you choose. Here are the rest of the criteria that most people seem to focus on when they’re thinking about their fridges (in declining order of popularity, roughly), with some advice on how to navigate the choices:

Decide between freestanding or built-in.The only true difference between these types of fridges is that freestanding models have finished sides, while built-in fridges do not because they’re designed to sit flush with and attach to (or even blend in with) cabinetry. Built-ins also cost at least $4,000, can be much wider than freestanding fridges, and are rarely available in top-freezer configurations (but much more commonly available in all-fridge or all-freezer columns). This AJ Madison primer has some additional details on style and sizing options for built-ins. (AJ Madison is a major appliance retailer that carries most brands of refrigerators, both freestanding and built-in.)

Freestanding full-size fridges can be as cheap as $650 or cost thousands of dollars like some built-ins. Since freestanding fridges are much, much more affordable, that’s the type that the overwhelming majority of people buy, so that’s what we focus on in this guide. But some of this guide applies to built-in fridges, too.

Consider reliability. More than half of the respondents in our reader survey said that reliability was one of the top three most important things they wanted in a new fridge. Unfortunately, nobody has a crystal ball that can predict which brand or model—or especially individual refrigerator units on sale today—will last the longest and have the fewest problems. However, after digging through Wirecutter survey responses and retail customer reviews and examining other publicly available data, we have some leads about the brands, fridge types, and even specific models that may be most prone to problems.

Think through what you want for capacity, shelving, and organization. These closely related qualities are highly important to most fridge owners. More than half of the readers who filled out our survey cited one of these three things as a top priority in their fridge, and size or layout was mentioned in at least 25% of the customer reviews we analyzed for any individual fridge. For higher-end models with specialized organization features (such as a door-in-door system or a two-drawer French-door model), size and layout were usually cited in more than 50% of reviews, and the sentiment was largely positive.

French-door models earn much more praise and less criticism related to shelving, storage, and organization than side-by-side or top-freezer fridges. One review on Home Depot"s website (collected as part of a promotion, which is common) encapsulates a lot of the praise: “I save on groceries because I can actually see everything,” writes JManigault201 about a French-door model, adding, “I don"t have to bend so low to get items out of my fridge. The [drawers] on the freezer make it easy to see my food without having to reach so far back.” The exception here is counter-depth French-door fridges with door dispensers: Owners are more likely to cite these models as being cramped or hard to organize, we found.

In general, we learned that most people are comfortable with the size of their fridge. Complaints about small capacity are just as common among huge 26-cubic-foot models as they are among 16-cubic-foot models, for example. It really has more to do with the shelving and layout. If you want an enormous fridge, by all means, get one. But you might not need quite as much space as you think. (Just to put the idea in your head: We think that if you’re looking for a 36-inch-wide fridge, you’ll probably be happy with a counter-depth fridge.)

Think twice about an ice maker and door dispenser. Most people seem to think that a built-in ice maker is worth having. But automatic ice makers, especially the kind that dispenses ice through the refrigerator door, are both wonderfully convenient and one of the most finicky, problem-prone parts of a fridge. In our reader survey, 24% of respondents said that their ice maker had jammed or completely broken, by far the most common hardware-based failure. That’s particularly notable considering that 17% of respondents didn’t even have an automatic ice maker or said that they didn’t think about this feature.

Some upscale fridges even have specialty ice features, like LG’s Craft Ice clear spheres (38% of the owners of one model whose reviews we analyzed cited Craft Ice as one of their favorite features).

We looked for patterns in the types of fridges that are most prone to ice-maker problems, but we couldn’t find any. Ice-maker reliability, as far as we can tell, depends on the specific model of refrigerator, not its brand, door type, or price.

For example: One Samsung French-door fridge, the RF28R7201SR, has a terrible ice maker, with 40% of owners complaining that it jams regularly, according to our AI-assisted analysis of customer reviews. (It was by far the worst service record we came across.) But the similar Samsung RF27T5201SR has far fewer complaints, with 10% of owners complaining about ice jams (still a bad rate). And then the nearly identical-looking Samsung RF28R7551S had essentially no complaints about its ice maker jamming at the time we did the analysis. Similar trends play out among other brands (though none even come close to the failure rate on that first Samsung model).

Consider the finish. Stainless steel is still the trendy-yet-attainable choice, as it has been for a few decades, and is widely regarded as an option that looks good in most kitchens. (Though a common complaint is that it’s a pain to keep fingerprint-free, even for models with supposedly fingerprint-resistant finishes.)

Different brands have slightly different looks to their stainless—some are more reflective, some have a more pronounced brushed-metal look, some are more fingerprint resistant. If this matters to you, check out some fridges in person.

There are plenty of other finishes to pick from, though they’re available on fewer models. Other neutral, brushed-metal finishes such as black stainless or slate are common. Glossy black and white are still widely available, particularly on cheaper fridges. Whirlpool and GE sell a bisque finish, though we aren’t sure whether this cream color is a throwback to or a holdover from the ’80s. Bolder, brighter colors (or even prints) are available, too, though they tend to be reserved for upscale models and only from certain brands.

Choose a model that maximizes efficiency and sustainability.Refrigerators are much more energy efficient than they were 15 and especially 30 years ago due to stricter efficiency regulations from the Department of Energy, as well as stronger incentives from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program. And as of summer 2021, all of the major brands now claim to use a climate-friendly refrigerant in at least some of their lineups—and a couple have transitioned all of their new fridges in that regard. So without even trying hard, you’ll probably end up with an environmentally sound refrigerator.

Cooling performance and food preservation:Some fridges are probably better at keeping foods fresher and more appetizing for longer, but we haven’t yet looked into the science of how that works or which features to look for. Consumer Reports tests and rates refrigerators for temperature consistency, defined as how quickly (and accurately) each fridge reaches the temperature on its thermostat and how well it holds that temperature as the ambient temperature around the fridge changes. This capability probably has something to do with maintaining freshness, so you could check Consumer Reports’s reviews if you think this will matter.

What we can tell you is that after analyzing more than 28,000 customer reviews across 34 different fridges, it is very uncommon to find criticism of fridges for doing a poor job keeping foods fresh, outside of cases where the cooling system was obviously defective or broken.

When people do complain, it’s usually because the temperature throughout the fridge compartment is uneven: Portions of the door are too warm for milk, for example, or the very top or bottom of the cavity gets so cold that lettuce freezes and turns into disgusting mush. This happens with only some fridges, even if they’re working properly. The problem seems more common among lower-cost top-freezer models, and higher-end models with a door-in-door feature might struggle to hold dairy-safe temperatures in their door shelves. Consumer Reports also tests for this type of temperature uniformity, if you’d like to see performance results for specific models.
