The cost to replace a MacBook Pro hard drive includes backing up all data and files, removing any harmful information from that backup, updating operating system, reinstalling app system, reinstalling data and other conveniences like reconnecting the printers to their network. Newer model Apple-compatible hard drives are typically more expensive.

Common repairs for Apple desktops include replacing the internal fans or repairing damage to the hard drive. Internal fans keep the processor and the inside cool and prevent overheating. Your fans may need to be replaced if your computer is overheating, spontaneously shutting down or making strange noises.

Apple repair technicians may charge for pickup or drop-off services, or may include transportation in their fees. Many technicians will provide a free diagnosis and an estimate of repair costs for customers who bring a computer or device to their location. Some repair shops even offer free diagnostics for laptops and phones when clients bring them in. The new iPhone 12 comes with Ceramic Shield technology, which Apple says quadruples drop performance to make the phone more resistant to screen cracks. If the screen does crack, though, be prepared to spend a hefty $279 on repairs.

The $80 price increase is likely due to the OLED display, which is now included in the base iPhone 12, and was part of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max last year. Apple says OLED has deeper blacks and brighter colors than LCD screens like those on the iPhone 11. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple has not yet released repair price information for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini, which will be available to preorder on November 6. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are already available to preorder, and will ship on October 23. The iPhone 12 will start at $799, and the 12 Mini will start at $699. The Pro models are more expensive, with the iPhone 12 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1,099.

All new Apple products come with a one-year limited warranty and 90 days of free technical support. If customers want more coverage for their new devices, they can pay for AppleCare+ extended warranty plans directly from Apple.

Customers have 30 to 60 days to activate AppleCare+ from the time of purchase. For many Apple devices, the coverage can be activated from the Settings app.

Apple"s basic device warranties cover manufacturer defects or failures, like bending, dents, or dead pixels. AppleCare builds on this by adding accidental damage repair and remote software support. It functions like car insurance, where you pay for the extended coverage upfront then pay a deductible when needed.

AppleCare doesn"t cover user-created damage like unauthorized repair or modification, illegal software manipulation or download, or other non-accident-related events. In these cases, Apple will turn customers away or require full device replacement.

Screen or enclosure damage costs $99 to repair, and any other damage costs $299. Customers only get two out-of-warranty repairs covered by AppleCare+. After using those up, they will have to pay full price.

Screen damage costs $29 to repair, and any other damage will cost $99. Customers only get two out-of-warranty repairs covered by AppleCare+ and will pay full price after using those up.

AppleCare+ is available for all currently supported iPhones. There is an additional theft and loss program exclusive to iPhone. Only the models sold by Apple can have a subscription-based AppleCare+ service.

Repairs cost $69 for the standard Apple Watch and Apple Watch Nike. The more expensive Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Hermes can be repaired for $79.

Apple TV has a unique plan called the "AppleCare Protection Plan" at $39. There are no associated fees for repair because this isn"t an insurance plan, but a warranty extension with better support options.

Apple"s Self Service Repair Program gives users a chance to repair their own iPhones using certified parts and tools. Rather than take the broken device to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider, users can contact Apple to rent tools, order parts, and perform the repair at home.

This program exists partially as a response to the Right to Repair movement that has been clamoring for Apple-sourced tools for home repair. While it has finally arrived in some part, it comes at a high cost and moderate risk.

If you rent Apple"s 80 pounds of equipment to repair an iPhone, it"ll cost you only $50 but a $1,200 hold will be placed on your card in case of damage or failure to return. You get the tools for exactly one week with penalties applied for late returns.

Apple says the parts are priced exactly the same as if an Apple Store were buying them. However, you"ll need plenty of space and technical skill to perform the repair. Not to mention it"ll take up your personal time and you risk breaking your device further.

The Self Service Repair Program is a fair alternative for those who don"t live near an Authorized Service Provider or tinkerers looking to self-repair. Though the cost of paying Apple to repair the device for you may be the cheaper, more simple option.

Assuming Apple believes that you really are this unlucky, AppleCare+ could cover you for four screen repairs, four other damages, or four battery replacements. Or if you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, it could cover you for four incidents of your iPhone being stolen.

Unquestionably, Apple has calculated the costs, and it"s also added up the odds. Apple knows just how many people buy AppleCare+, and it knows too how many of those ever make any claim on it.

If you"re the most prone to breaking screens, and you have a 2020 iPhone SE, then four repairs outside coverage would cost you $516. Four repairs with the standard AppleCare+ would add up to either $195 or $211.76, depending on whether you pay monthly or not.

Taking just the one-off AppleCare+ cost, without theft and loss, gives a similar picture over all the eligible iPhones. Four screen repairs on the iPhone 11 would total $265, instead of an out-of-coverage total of $796.

With the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, four screen repairs under AppleCare+ would cost you the same $265, but without the coverage would be $916 for the iPhone 12, and $1,116 for the iPhone 12 mini.

Four screen repairs on the iPhone 12 Pro would cost you $315 with cover, and $1,116 without. And for the iPhone 12 Pro, the total would be the same $315 with AppleCare+, but without it you"d be paying $1,316."

If you never claim on AppleCare+, then it would appear to be wasted because you got no benefit from the fee. Equally, if you have one incident then under most circumstances, the total cost of repair is less if you have AppleCare+.

That would mean that if you"re likely to have more than two incidents of damage in the first two years after buying an iPhone, AppleCare+ is worth it.

Of course, you can"t really predict whether you"re going to need AppleCare+ or not. But as well as meaning taking out AppleCare+ is a gamble, there is another side to it.

Rather than thinking about the specifics of how many times you can get your screen repaired, for instance, you could think about the peace of mind. Having AppleCare+ does mean the hit you will take if something goes wrong is less.

Then as well as the measurable benefits of repairs, AppleCare+ does include 24/7 technical support. You"re perhaps going to have to want quite a lot of that to be worth the cost, but what you"re paying for is the fact that it"s available.

That"s the real benefit of AppleCare+ overall. Knowing this, and knowing how prone you are to accidents, means that AppleCare+ might make you less nervous about this expensive device you"ve bought.

Apple MacBook screens are a high-quality and very reliable product. Most of the time, they won’t go wrong for no reason unless they have been suffered from physical impacts or exposed to liquid.  You can easily notice a physical-damaged MacBook screen such as a cracked screen. You can see the image as well as the cracks. In this situation, you definitely need a MacBook screen replacement.

A completed MacBook screen assembly consists of an LCD panel, a webcam and a wifi antenna.  An older MacBook screen assembly also has a front glass and an in-built wifi card. If your screen display is working fine, only the webcam or the Wifi antenna is not functional; you may not have to replace the entire screen assembly. We can repair the faulty components for you to lower your repair bill. This type of MacBook screen repair will cost $100 to $200, depending on the MacBook models.

If you have a non-retina MacBook Pro screen, we can replace the broken front glass panel, broken or burned screen cable, faulty webcam or the faulty wifi card/antenna at a low cost without replacing the whole screen assembly.

When you need to replace the MacBook screen, you may need to make a decision between using an Apple original screen or a cheaper third-party screen. We compare an Apple original screen with a third-party screen side by side shown in the following photo to help you better understand the differences.

The above two MacBook Pro A1708 were manufactured in 2017. Both MacBooks use the same background picture and set the brightness to maximum. The screen on the right-hand side is an Apple original screen; the one on the left-hand side is a third-party screen purchased online. You can tell the differences straightforward by the quality of the images. Here we discuss the technical details.

A MacBook screen consists of two major components, an LCD panel and a strip of LED lights called backlights. The LCD panel creates the image. The LED lights illuminate the image from behind the LCD panel. There are significant differences between an original Apple screen and a third-party screen as outlined here:

1. Backlight purity. Apple uses high-quality LEDs as backlight sources. The backlight is pure white. On the other hand, the backlight of the third-party screen is bluish. The bluish backlight degrades the vivid picture dramatically.

2. Backlight brightness. Even after eight years, Apple’s high-quality LEDs provide brighter lights and remain near the same brightness level. Low-quality LEDs not only produce bluish light but also have brightness degradation problems. The brightness of some third-party screens may only maintain half of the original brightness level after a year of use.

3. Photo sharpness. The Apple original screen produces a much sharper image thanks to the high quality of the LCD panel, as you can see on the right-hand side of the above photo.

Each iPhone model has a different level of repairability: the 3GS"s front glass is replaceable separate from the display assembly (glass panels in later models are not), while the iPhone 4 provided easier repair of the rear panel and battery. Newer iPhones like the iPhone 11 have rear glass panels that are notoriously difficult to repair, but their screens are among the simplest to replace in the industry. With each new design iteration, new iPhone repair challenges arise and old ones are remedied.

Though Apple may tell you otherwise, all of these devices are user-serviceable with the help of our repair guides, found in each of the device pages above.

The most apparent Apple iPhone identifiers are the famous bitten Apple logo and the “iPhone” lettering on the back panel. Newer iPhones such as the iPhone 11 have a more centrally located logo and do not have the “iPhone” lettering.

Yesterday, Apple revealed it would expand its Self Service Repair program to let you fix your own MacBooks, and today the program is here. You can now download full repair manuals for your 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and the 2020 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air — and shop for parts you might need.

But what will Apple actually let you buy, and how much will you really have to pay? That’s not obvious until you enter your serial numbers and root around the company’s entire store — so we did it for you.

Many prices seem (relatively) generous! Others, not so much. You can’t just replace your own battery or keyboard on a MacBook Pro, for example! You have to buy the entire top lid that comes with that and other parts preattached, and it’ll cost you more than twice the $199 that Apple charges for a battery replacement.

Apple spokesperson Patrick Leahy confirmed to The Vergethat a battery replacement part will eventually be available, but wouldn’t say when. Admittedly, your 2021 battery shouldn’t be wearing out just yet. No word on keyboard or speakers, either.

And while you can replace just the battery on your 2020 M1 MacBook Air, you’ll have to spend $39 — the same price as a full set of keycaps — to replace broken keys on your function row. That might be because Apple ships seven sets of Fn keycaps at a time:

The motherboard prices are particularly interesting. Not only will Apple not let you upgrade to a higher-end board, the company is dramatically incentivizing you to return the original part. It expects you to lay out as much as $4,222 for a new logic board — ouch at having that on my credit card — but you’ll get the vast majority of it back upon return. You should wind up paying $588 for a 16-inch MacBook Pro board, $500 for a 14-inch or 13-inch MBP board, or $368 for an M1 Air board, no matter how loaded it is.

You can also opt for Apple’s $49 tool rental — if you’re willing to sign away its whole purchase price in the event you don’t return it within seven days. (This nearly got me in trouble when I used one to repair my iPhone, as my parts arrived days after the kit, and even though I sent it back in time, Apple initially reported it missing.)

We accept complete iPhone and iPad devices, either in working or non-working order. This includes units that are beyond economic repair (BER), water damaged, iCloud-locked or simply not working in any respect. However, the units must be complete with no parts missing. (So, for example, we couldn’t accept a housing including the motherboard, but missing the LCD display).
