The Interlogix Simon XTi is a wireless all-in-one touchscreen control panel that serves as the primary controller for a home or business security system. It is essentially a full color touchscreen display version of the Interlogix Simon XT. The 3.5 inch full color LCD touchscreen display makes the Simon XTi panel easier for end users to program devices and navigate on a daily basis. Interlogix also carries the Simon XTi-5 which is a slightly larger 5 inch graphical user interface. Overall, the Simon XTi is a simple, reliable wireless alarm panel for those looking an affordable way to protect their home or business.

One of the biggest hardware features of the Simon XTi is its 3.5-inch ftouchscreen display. This makes the system significantly more inviting and engaging than the programming field based push-button Simon XT. A quick look at the Simon XTi System will show the user its current status, as well as any faults or trouble conditions. Users of the Simon XTi typically find that the system is very easy to set up and use. By navigating the menus, a user can quickly program sensors and execute a walk test mode whenever they need to do so.

The Simon XTi will support up to 40 different security zones. This is more than adequate for most homes and small businesses. Two of these programmable zones are compatible with either wireless sensors or hardwired normally closed sensors. The other 38 zones are compatible exclusively with wireless sensors. The Simon XTi interfaces with sensors at a frequency of 319.5 MHz. This makes the alarm system compatible with all GE/Interlogix and Qolsys wireless sensors that operate on this frequency. Qolsys S-line sensors are not compatible.

To get the most out of the Simon XTi System, we strongly encourage users to obtain an Alarm.com cellular communication module. Without this add-on, the Simon XTi will only be able to communicate over POTS (plain old telephone service) service. Monitoring an alarm system via POTS will limit the ability of a user to have any type of remote access to the system and handicaps an alarm company from offering any remote programming assistance. Cellular communication is both faster and more reliable than POTS service. Additionally, many panel features and capabilities for the Simon XTi are only available through the use of a cellular communicator. For example, Upgrading to cellular will allow a Simon XTi to interface with the Alarm.com server and communicate locally with any compatible Z-Wave devices.

The Alarm.com cellular communicators for the Simon XTi are available with Verizon, AT&T and Telus (Canada Only). Once you have one of these radios installed your system you will be capable of interacting with the Alarm.com platform and all the server level integrations this service has to offer. The Alarm.com app and website login allows end users to remotely arm/disarm the Simon XTi as well integrate with devices like the Nest thermostat, Liftmaster MyQ garage doors and Lutron Caseta lighting systems. The cellular module add-on for the Simon XTi includes a Z-Wave controller for this very purpose. Up to 232 Z-Wave devices can be programmed with the Simon XTi Panel after a cellular communicator has been added. The Alarm.com service is also needed for using a Simon XTi System with smart home voice assistants, such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

The Simon XTi offers support for up to eight different user codes. This allows multiple users to maintain their own access to the system. The panel also offers voice and chime functions to provide audible alerts for end users. When a zone experiences a fault or a trouble, the panel will clearly state the name of the associated sensor so that the issue can be quickly identified. A user can choose to enable or disable these sound functions at any time.

Please Note: The Interlogix Simon XTi was formerly known as the GE Simon XTi. It is simply rebranded. Also if you install an Alarm.com communicator it will occupy zone 40 on the Simon XTi so keep it empty. A replacement power transformer for this system can be purchased here.

A cultural heritage museum in the South of Germany for decades, the installed intrusion alarm system has provided reliable protection on the premises. But suddenly, the detectors trigger false alarms every night after the museum closes. The system integrators are puzzled and conduct extensive tests of the entire system.

Not an easy fix situation, since a new lighting system would prove far too costly. Ultimately, the integrators need to perform extensive detector firmware updates and switch to different sensor architecture to eliminate the error source. This scenario is by no means an isolated incident, but part of a growing trend.

Strong temperature fluctuations can be interpreted by sensors as indicators of a person inside the building. Triggers range from floor heating sources to strong sunlight. In this context, room temperatures above 86°F (30°C) have proven particularly problematic.

Extensive bandwidth frequencies in Wi-Fi routers can potentially confuse sensors. Only a few years ago, wireless routers operated on a bandwidth of around 2.7GHz while today’s devices often exceed 5GHz, thereby catching older detectors off guard.

Over the next few years, sensors were also equipped with sensors detecting visible light to catch flashlights used by burglars, as well as temperature sensors. In Bosch sensors, engineers added proprietary technologies such as First Step detection to trigger instant alarms upon persons entering a room.

The site also presents additional error sources such as large amounts of dust that can contaminate the sensors, as well as visitors accidentally dropping their cameras or mobile phones next to museum exhibits.

Should you need a new, compatible module, look for a 4G LTE 600-1048-XT-LTE-VZ cellular module. This would be compatible with XT, XTi and XTi-5. (Interlogix recently halted its security business and some parts for Interlogix panels can be difficult to source.)

Note, for users with the Simon XT, the minimum panel firmware requirement to work with a 4G module is 1.3. You can confirm the panel’s firmware by scrolling through the menu until you get to Revision.

If you are instead looking to upgrade your system, the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 sold through Surety uses a 4G LTE communicator and the same legacy 319.5 mhz sensor radio as the Simon panels, so existing wireless sensors (with the exception of Alarm.com Image Sensors) can be easily paired with the IQ Panel 4.

There are cellular modules that work with the Simon panels that allow you to control the panel remotely and that is what ADT or Alarm.com use to let you have that option. They are expensive, about $200. I bet that someone savvy in programming would be able to use these modules for self monitoring and integrate it to ST but I’m not that guy. I did not want to pay the monthly fee and do not need to lock or unlock it remotely so my set up works for me.

I don’t know that you have to take your existing sensors down, Simon XTI might be able to work as a wired system as well, I’m not sure. I saw you had a concern with the batteries. I use Interlogix sensors with CR123A batteries and they last for years, even the one I have outside exposed to extreme temperatures (hot and cold) so this really is a non issue and the panel will tell you if it can’t connect to it then you know it’s time to replace the battery.

The relay can be triggered 2 ways usually, either turn it on/off from it’s power source, or use the trigger port when they have one. The Simon uses a trigger port so you need a relay that has a trigger like the ELK 924, not all relay have one.

You can have your monitoring company install the XTI panel, then buy an ELK 924 relay, a linear power supply, a 12 volts battery, a VAC transformer, a roll of 22/2 solid copper alarm wire and the ZW097 sensor then you can keep your existing set up and add the Smartthings triggers. Look at my wiring diagram for instructions and part numbers, ignore the siren wiring, it’s not that complex.

You may also need a box to put all that gear in. If your panel is installed in a visible area, I would recommend getting a nice in-wall metal box that you fix to one of the studs or a large one that fits in between two studs, I got mine at Home Depot. You can paint over it so it blends in, a large gang box may work as well (in that case be careful with the battery size and shape).
