LONG-TRAVEL FRONT SUSPENSION: The Africa Twin doesn’t just look like an adventure bike—it’s the real deal. Exhibit A: Check out its long-travel front suspension. The inverted Showa fork is fully adjustable with huge 45mm tubes and 9.1 inches of travel—the most front-end travel in the 1000cc off-road class.
STEEL FRAME: This second generation of Africa Twin features a frame that is almost four pounds lighter than our earlier bikes. And while it may be lighter, we fine-tuned it by making the steering head more resistant to twist.
SEMI-DOUBLE-CRADLE-FRAME: The Africa Twin’s semi-double-cradle frame layout has been proven in countless Honda dirtbikes. In principle it’s similar to the design we use on our CRF450R Rally factory Dakar racebike—a machine that’s designed to perform in the challenging Dakar rally and similar events.
FOUR-PISTON CALIPERS: Up front, the Africa Twin features twin four-piston brake calipers for powerful braking performance. The radial-mount design also helps make them stiffer, increasing brake feel and control.
43-DEGREE STEERING LOCK: With 43 degrees of steering lock both left and right, the Africa Twin provides excellent maneuverability on tight trails. This is one of the reasons the Africa Twin feels so much more nimble than many of the other bigger adventure bikes out there.
HOLLOW AXLE SHAFTS: The Africa Twin uses large-diameter hollow steel axles front and rear. They’re super strong, durable, but also light: a combination which describes just about everything associated with this bike.
Honda SELECTABLE TORQUE CONTROL: The Africa Twin’s throttle-by-wire system lets us offer Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC). You can dial in exactly the kind of power delivery you want for the conditions at hand. Honda Selectable Torque Control features seven settings for a wide range of conditions, from pavement to fast, loose fire roads to challenging singletrack. You can also turn it off. New engine settings for 2022 make a great feature even better.
WHEELIE CONTROL: Front and rear wheel-speed sensors working with the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) let you dial in three levels of wheelie control. There"s also an "off" position—you"re the wheelie control here.
REAR SUSPENSION: Not only is the Africa Twin’s rising-rate Pro-Link® rear suspension fully adjustable, it offers a 220mm stroke for 8.7 inches of rear-wheel travel. Even better, there’s a special remote preload adjuster—you just turn a convenient knob, and you can compensate for varying loads like a passenger or full panniers.
TIRES AND WHEELS: Real adventure bikes use spoked wheels because they better survive the dings and hits of off-road riding. All Africa Twin models feature a 21-inch front and an 18-inch rear for superior performance, especially when it comes to off-road riding.
In its first news release of the year, American Honda announces the return of the Africa Twin platform in both the standard version and the long-range Adventure Sports SE. The Africa Twin comes back with a number of focused refinements aimed at improving the riding experience, and both model variants will continue to be offered with either a manual gearbox or Honda’s automatic Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT).
While the 1,084cc engine still churns out 100.6 ponies, the DCT versions of both the standard Africa Twin and Adventure Sports models get updated with new refined settings for 2022. Specifically, Honda has further optimized the programming in the first two gears to deliver even smoother handling from a standing start and at low speeds.
In an effort to increase the daily practicality of the standard Africa Twin, the updated model now comes with the same rear luggage rack as its more travel-focused Adventure Sports ES sibling. In turn, the Adventure Sports variant gets a new 110mm lower 5-stage adjustable screen which, according to Honda, improves visibility while still offering plenty of weather protection. Both Africa Twin versions are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well, enabling hands-free playing of music, turn-by-turn navigation, rider communication, and more.
Pricing for the standard Africa Twin will be $14,499 with manual transmission and $15,299 for DCT. The Adventure Sports SE will have an MSRP of $17,299 for the manual model and $18,099 for DCT. Look for them to arrive at your local dealer soon! More details can be found on the Honda Website.

Choose your transmission: The Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES is available with either a robust six-speed manual gearbox or an advanced, automatic shifting, six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Honda has launched the 2021 Africa Twin Adventure Sports in India at Rs 15.96 lakh (Manual) and Rs 17.50 lakh (DCT).Significant price hike on both variants
The 2021 Africa Twin (Manual) now costs Rs 15.96 lakh as compared to the 2020 variant priced at Rs 15.35 lakh. The DCT variant, meanwhile, costs Rs 17.50 lakh which is a significant jump from the 2020 model year’s Rs 16.10 lakh price tag.
For 2021, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports is available in two new colour schemes - Darkness Black Metallic and Pearl Glare White Tricolor. Everything else remains the same as the model from last year.
To recap, last year the Africa Twin got an updated parallel-twin engine with an 86cc bump in displacement, taking it up to 1,084cc. The engine makes 99.2hp and 103Nm of torque, a notable bump from the previous-gen model’s 89hp/93.1Nm.
Electronic tech includes a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), wheelie control, cornering ABS, rear-lift control, DCT cornering detection and cornering lights; and the new 6.5-inch TFT display is compatible with Apple CarPlay. The Adventure Sports model offers additional features like tubeless wheels, a charging socket, a larger skid plate, an aluminium rear rack and the aforementioned larger fuel tank.
Honda brought the legendary Africa Twin nameplate back to the U.S. lineup for the 2016 model year, and four years later, the adventure bike is evolving. The 2020 model year marks a shift from CRF1000L to CRF1100L, which indicates a revised bigger engine with slightly more power. The new bikes (shown in European form in the photos) are also lighter and more technologically advanced than ever, with modern driver aids and smartphone connectivity.
After expanding the Africa Twin lineup for 2018 with the addition of the comfort-focused Adventure Sports ES model, the bike is growing in a different manner for 2020. New models will be equipped with a 1,084-cc liquid-cooled Unicam four-stroke parallel-twin engine, up 86 cc from the 998-cc 2019 models. Honda also upgraded the intake and exhaust systems. Overall, the bike gets a 6% increase in horsepower, and torque is slightly up, though no official numbers were provided.
The improved powerplant pairs with either a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic dual-clutch transmission, both of which Honda says have been improved for 2020. Further enhancements include a new aluminum detachable subframe, an upgraded frame, and a lighter and more rigid swingarm.
Thanks to new tech, the 2020 Africa Twin will be more advanced than before. A new 6.5-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) color touchscreen display is Apple CarPlay compatible, and cruise control is now standard on all models. New driving aids include wheelie control, cornering ABS, rear-lift control, DCT cornering detection, and cornering lights.
Although the bike itself has been improved, the lineup hierarchy remains the same. There are two types of Africa Twins available: the base Africa Twin or the more expensive Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES. The base Africa Twin is focused on off-roading and has a new shorter windscreen and five-gallon gas tank. The Adventure Sports ES is tailored for longer driving and has more premium features such as Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment suspension, tubeless wheels, heated grips, an accessory socket, a larger skid plate, an aluminum rear rack, and a 6.5-gallon tank.
Before destination fee, the 2020 Africa Twin starts at $14,399 MSRP, while the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES starts at $17,199. DCT models add $800 to the bill on either trim. The new Honda Africa Twins will be available March 2020 in either matte black metallic or Pearl Glare White and Blue.

The Africa Twin for 2022 gets a few cosmetic changes, updated features and a new price tag. It is priced at a premium of Rs 5,000 over the previous one, which means the Africa Twin Adventure Sports costs Rs 16.01 lakh for the manual variant, and Rs 17.50 lakh for the DCT variant (all prices, ex-showroom).
So what’s new? For starters, the 2022 Africa Twin Adventure Sports gets a Matt Ballistic Metallic Black paint scheme, which means darker rims instead of the gold-coloured ones seen on the older model.
Under the skin, things are pretty much the same. the Africa Twin continues to be powered by the 1082cc liquid-cooled unit, which makes 99hp and 103Nm of torque. Apart from the addition of Android Auto, the feature list hasn’t been changed. The 6.5-inch TFT touchscreen display, switchable dual-channel ABS, six riding modes, selectable torque control, and six-axis IMU, cornering lights have all been carried forward.
