The rider can access motorcycle and connectivity functions quickly with the BMW Motorrad multi-controller and the integrated approach. In addition the new TFT display combines the familiar “classic” display of data such as rpm and speed with new technology thereby providing an enormous range of features.

The rider can see all his smartphone contacts in the TFT display and can select and call contacts using the multi-controller. If there is an incoming call while on the road, the rider can quickly take or reject the call with a single tip of the controller.

Moreover, the free BMW Motorrad Connected App is claimed to offer everyday-suitable and practice-oriented arrow navigation directly via the TFT display. BMW Motorrad USA has announced the first round of updates and changes to its 2023 lineup of motorcycles and scooters, which will begin production in August 2022. BMW says it has made an effort to streamline the range of available options, with one comprehensive equipment package available for most models.

The BMW C 400 GT saw several updates in 2022 and remains the only gas-powered scooter in BMW’s lineup. The 350cc liquid-cooled Single makes a claimed 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 26 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted through a CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) and a rigid aluminum double-sided swingarm with a swingarm bearing designed for reduced vibration.

BMW took “urban mobility” up a level to “electromobility” in 2021 with the CE 04, an electric scooter that features a liquid-cooled, permanent-magnet electric motor making a claimed 42 hp. Top speed is 74.5 mph, with standing start acceleration of 0-30 mph in 2.6 seconds. BMW claims a range of 80 miles on the battery, with approximate standard charging time of four hours and 20 minutes (65 minutes with the optional quick charger).

ABS is standard, as are a 10.25-inch TFT color screen with integrated map navigation and extensive connectivity and three ride modes – Road, Rain, and Eco. For 2023, the CE 04 has been updated so the self-canceling turnsignal can be switched off in the menu for the instrument cluster.

BMW’s entry-level roadster, the G 310 R, and G 310 GS adventure bike both have a 313cc liquid-cooled Single that makes a claimed 34 hp at 9,250 rpm and 20.6 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered via a 6-speed gearbox and chain final drive, and the G 310s were upgraded in 2021 to include throttle-by-wire and a slipper clutch, as well as adjustable brake and clutch hand levers. ABS is standard, but other 2021 updates included a new LED headlight and indicators.

For 2023, BMW hasn’t made any equipment changes to the G 310s, which starts at $4,995 for the G 310 R and $5,695 for the GS. For colors, on the G 310 R, Passion Racing Red style replaces Passion Kyanite Blue Metallic, Sport Polar White/Racing Blue style replaces Sport Limestone Metallic, and Cosmic Black 2 remains unchanged. On the G 310 GS, Sport Polar White/Racing Blue replaces Triple Black, the Rallye Kalamata Dark Gold Metallic style replaces Rallye Kyanite Blue Metallic, and Cosmic Black 3 remains unchanged.

The BMW F 750 GS adventure bike features an 853cc liquid-cooled parallel-Twin that makes a claimed 77 hp at 7,500 rpm and 61 lb-ft of torque. The bike has a 6-speed gearbox, a slip/assist clutch, and chain final drive. BMW’s cornering ABS and traction control are standard, as are the Road and Rain ride modes.

Both the F 900 R roadster and F 900 XR adventure bike have an 895cc liquid-cooled parallel-Twin that makes a claimed 99 hp at 8,500 rpm and 67 lb-ft of torque. They have a 6-speed gearbox, a slipper clutch, and chain final drive. ABS, Automatic Stability Control, and Rain and Road ride modes are standard, as are adjustable brake and clutch hand levers and a 6.5-inch TFT display. For 2023, BMW has added RDC real-time gradient tire-pressure monitoring, and the self-canceling turnsignal can be switched off in the menu for the instrument cluster.

Introduced in 2013, BMW’s R nineT range – R nineT, R nineT Pure, R nineT Scrambler, and R nineT Urban G/S – saw updates in 2021, so there are only style and option changes for the 2023 lineup. The range still includes a 1,170cc air/liquid-cooled Boxer Twin that received newly designed cylinder heads with a new turbulence system in 2021. The engine makes 109 hp at 7,250 rpm and 85.5 lb-ft of torque (claimed). The R nineT range features a 6-speed gearbox, a single-plate dry clutch, and shaft final drive.

In 2020, BMW announced several technical and aesthetic updates to the R 1250 RT sport-tourer. It features a 1,254cc air/liquid-cooled Boxer Twin that makes a claimed 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque, a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch, and shaft final drive. Starting in 2021, full integral and cornering-optimized ABS and cornering traction control were added as standard equipment. The Eco ride mode was also added as standard to the existing Rain and Road modes, among several other standard features. For 2023, RDC real-time gradient tire-pressure monitoring has been added to the Comfort Package, and the self-canceling turnsignal can be switched off in the menu for the instrument cluster.

BMW says the S 1000 XR sport-adventure-tourer “combines athleticism and long-distance performance in perfect form.” The bike received updates for 2020 similar to those on the S 1000 R . Like its stablemate, the XR has a 999cc oil/water-cooled inline-Four that makes a claimed 165 hp at 11,000 rpm and 84 lb-ft of torque. It has a 6-speed gear box – with the gear ratios lengthened for 4th through 6th gear in 2020 – as well as a slipper clutch and chain final drive.

Will BMW end all gas-powered scooters now that they have introduced the CE 04 in the 2022 lineup? The European scooter market is stronger than in North America, but rising fuel prices and excellent urban mobility machines like this BMW CE 04 make a compelling case to change how we move about.

The “04” in the name is meant to hint at the 400cc scooters this bike takes aim at. Clearly, the BMW styling team had a heyday with the edgy design. Sitting down low in the chassis is a battery very similar to the ones used in the BMW iX vehicles. The electric motor is chassis mounted and combined with the battery takes up very little space, meaning the storage area is big enough to fit a full-face helmet.

The CE 04 can be charged at domestic sockets or a BMW Wallbox. With the optional quick charger you can charge the BMW CE 04 at the BMW Wallbox or on the go from 0% to 80% in around 65 minutes with the maximum charge current.

Standard features include LED lighting, a massive 10.25” TFT display with BMW Motorrad Connectivity, 3 ride modes, stability control, ABS brakes, even a Electronic reverse. If that isn’t loaded enough there is a long options list with goodies like heated grips.

The power plant at the heart of the new K 1600s is BMW’s tried and tested 1,649cc, inline-six-cylinder engine, redesigned to be narrower, lighter, and Euro5 compliant. BMW’s proprietary engine management system (BMS) works with two knock sensors and two additional lambda probes to manage fueling and maximize power in the high revs and efficiency in the lower rev range. The knock sensors also allow the use of lower-grade fuels, promising true go-anywhere capability.

The new K 1600 range gets a 10.25-inch TFT color display with integrated map navigation and connectivity, designed to work with BMW’s Multi-Controller wheel on the left bar to minimize distractions while riding. Like all BMW’s color TFTs, the K 1600’s is excellent. The anti-reflective screen is clear and readable with intuitive menu navigation. The new display allows for map views via smartphone connection, eliminating the need for a stand-alone GPS.

Great news, although BMW has inexplicably shunned Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity apps. Instead, the new map display works exclusively with BMW’s Connected App. In their defense, it is free and intuitive, and once figured out, we easily loaded some routes. We will update you on how we did with it in our full review coming soon.

The TFT screen’s dimensions allow for a split-screen view to simultaneously display the speedometer and tachometer in addition to the map or other information selectable from the menu. The BMW Connected app also works in conjunction with the display to connect and operate helmet communication systems via Bluetooth, allowing access to telephone and music functions. A second antenna enables data exchange both via W-LAN and Bluetooth.

The K 1600 lineup gets four favorite buttons, located on the left side of the fairing panel below the handlebars, enabling access to 18 programmable functions, such as “audio” or “heated grips.” The system uses two-stage buttons, which, when pressed gently, display the programmed function on the TFT screen and a list of alternative options. When pressed beyond the point of resistance, the button operates the programmed function.

BMW has also added an innovative smartphone storage compartment above the TFT display, which provides adequate power via a USB-C port for phone charging and operating navigation applications simultaneously. To prevent your smartphone from overheating with the effort, the splash-proof compartment"s dedicated electric fan, controlled by a thermostat, maintains adequate ventilation.

Turning on the K 1600’s ignition prompts a “Welcome” light function, the head and tail lights illuminate for a moment before fading out. After switching off the ignition, the head and tail lights briefly activate for the “Goodbye” function, which illuminates the area around the motorcycle. Enhancing the effect, the addition of the optional floor lighting package ($100), a new concept for BMW, adds bling and can be a practical aid when parking in the dark, using the side or center stand. A new “Follow Me Home” light function activates when pressing the high-beam headlight switch directly after turning off the ignition.

The GT version is also available in Black Storm Metallic and Sport, BMW’s classic racing white, blue, and red scheme. The GTL standard color is also Black Storm, and the Exclusive style option comes finished in Gravity Blue Metallic. The K 1600 B and Grand America are available in Exclusive style, finished in Manhattan Metallic matte (an attractive gray-green color) and Option 719 Midnight style finished in Meteoric Dust II Metallic, which uses immersion hydrographics to create a bespoke effect on each panel. Base prices start at $22,545, although depending on which options you choose from the myriad of options, expect the final price to be significantly more.
