I am not using a code or library. This is an existing OLD machine from the 1995. I don"t have an Arduino any longer, lost my old serial Arduino from back in like 2006. What possible problems could cause the bottom 2 lines to display only boxes?

Pins 1-8 are DB, not certain of correct orientation, but with lines 1 and 2 displaying properly but 3 and 4 displaying nothing. I would assume 4, 5,6 and 7 DB are correct, possible 0-3 are connected backwards though I can"t imagine why the old screen would be Pins 1-7 DB 7-6-5-4-0-1-2-3? Would this even cause this issue?
