After building an online business refurbishing smartphone LCD screens, local entrepreneur Machoule, 30, recently opened a storefront in Golden Gate offering complete cellphone and tablet repair. After two months, he already is looking to expand.

What he found was that with the explosion of smartphone sales and their subsequent need for repair, one of the most expensive parts, the LCD screen, could be salvaged.

The LCD screens function under a layer of glass, a polarizing filter and a frame. A shattered screen from a dropped phone usually means only the glass layer has cracked while the valuable LCD still functions.

Machoule said he always has been business-minded and that he realized there was a market for refurbishing LCD screens because of the demand for replacements among the repair shops springing up everywhere.

Machoule bought broken screens online and researched the process. He purchased manufacturing machinery from China and translated instructions using Google Translate.

Machoule said he got the process down working out of his garage and building a business through Craigslist and eBay buying broken LCD screens, refurbishing and reselling them.

"I put my services on eBay to repair LCDs or entire phones. Then I started getting a lot of orders. I stopped needing to buy the broken ones," he said.

In a nutshell, the process uses heat and a thin wire to remove the frame, broken glass and polarizing filter from the LCD. The remaining glue is removed with a solvent.

A device is connected to the LCD to boot up several images to test whether it"s working. Lastly, new glass, a polarizing filter and a phone model-specific frame is fused onto the LCD, using machinery to seal it and remove air bubbles with vacuum pressure.

Machoule said the cost of repair fluctuates with the phone model and damage but that an average repair would be about $80 for the most common repairs of cracked screens or battery replacement.

Andy Gillani owns four repair shops between Naples and Tampa and uses Refurbtech to refurbish his LCD screens. Gillani said he could buy aftermarket parts from China but that the quality isn"t the same as having Refurbtech refurbishing the OEM part.

"He just changes the glass, so everything stays original. When you buy aftermarket parts, the Chinese LCD is made by LG, not by Apple. That makes a difference," Gillani said.

"You have to send a message and wait a week for someone to answer, and then it is another week for someone to replace the screen for you. We can just come here and tell him you need to get it done, and that"s it," Rubio said.

However, if the digitizer or LCD is also damaged during a fall, that screen no longer carries value because it cannot be refurbished. Repair shops cannot sell broken LCDs to refurbishing companies; therefore, they cannot offset the cost of an LCD repair. That is why repair stores often charge a little extra if there is damage to the LCD or digitizer, to make up for that loss. Repair stores that don’t have an additional charge for an LCD repair typically inflate their glass repair price to make up for the loss from damaged LCDs. If they have one price, that means everyone is paying more to cover the cost of customers who have damaged LCDs and customers who only have cracked glass. This is why TCR separates the price of glass and LCD repairs for you! If you only have cracked glass, you only have to worry about paying to replace the cracked glass.

If your phone or tablet’s glass is shattered there will be cracks or chips on the screen itself. If it is just the glass that is damaged, the device may still function and you may be able to use it normally. If this is the case, it is likely that only the glass needs to be replaced. To prevent further damage to your device it is best to get it repaired quickly. For example, if liquids seep through the cracks it could cause permanent damage to the LCD.

Many people may continue to use their touchscreen with shattered glass and delay fixing the glass on their devices; however, if the touchscreen isn’t responsive, it could be a sign of more significant damage to the device’s digitizer which is integrated with the LCD screen.

A pixelated screen can indicate LCD damage. This would look like a patch of multicolored dots, a line or lines of discoloration, or a screen with rainbow colors. For many people, these colors are an easy way to know that their LCD is broken and that they should get it repaired.

Dropping your phone isn’t the only reason you’ll end up with a pixelated screen. Over time, your screen’s LCD may break down through regular use. iFixit has been offering OLED screens for those who would like to tackle repairs on their own. Those go for around $100 less than what Apple charges for an official screen replacement but now, it’s started offering LCD replacement for iPhone X, XS, and XS Max. It’s an interesting downgrade from OLED but some on a budget with DIY interest might find it’s a great option.

Apple’s screen repair costs jumped considerably with the arrival of the iPhone X. At this point, it costs between $279 and $329 to get an OLED on the X, XS, and 11 Pro.

They’re a little darker (about 50 nits worth), the resolution is a little lower, and the colors and contrast ratio won’t be quite the same.

But you might remember that, until a couple years ago, most phones had LCD displays, including phones you probably loved. Apple notably stuck with LCD displays while Samsung was experimenting with early OLED, and Apple still uses LCDs in its iPhone 8 and XR models.

Samsung have mastered a remarkable technology known as OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and use this for displays for their Galaxy series. The OLED displays look amazing - but are very expensive to manufacture. Most of the OLED displays are also manufactured into the housings and frames themselves, adding more costs especially with a curved screen.

Unlike Apple, Samsung actually develop and manufacturer their screens in house, in their own factories. This is known as a closed loop process that stops 3rd party manufacturers from ‘copying’ the displays.

Many other repair shops choose not use the Samsung Service Packs and go for the refurbished option. This is not what we recommend as you may save $40 on the repair, but since the original damaged screen has been recycled and usually fitted with cheap glass and frame, the chance of breakage and faulty rate is much higher.

Accidental Damage is any damage due to an unintentional act that is not the direct result of a manufacturing defect or failure. Accidental damage is not covered under the standard warranty of the product. Such damage is often the result of a drop or an impact on the LCD screen or any other part of the product which may render the device non-functional. Such types of damage are only covered under an Accidental Damage service offering which is an optional add-on to the basic warranty of the product. The LCD glass on the display is manufactured to rigorous specifications and standards and will not typically crack or break on its own under normal use. In general, cracked, or broken glass is considered accidental damage and is not covered under the standard warranty.

Internal cracks typically occur due to excessive force on the screen. This can be the result of some object hitting the screen, a drop, attempting to close the lid while an object is on the keypad area, or even holding the laptop by its screen.

Spots typically occur due to an external force hitting the screen causing damage to the LCD panel"s backlight assembly. While the top layer did not crack or break, the underlying area was compressed and damaged causing this effect.
