It is very important to note that this 2019 – 2021 Dodge Ram 12 inch screen upgrade does require in-vehicle programming, and Windows PC or Laptop for computer access at the vehicle IS Required. Note: Apple / MAC is NOT supported.
MVI will supply the necessary programming software and cables to connect to your vehicle, however, computer knowledge of installing software and necessary drivers are required. MVI will provide step-by-step programming instructions and tech support to assist in the process (tech support must be scheduled).
The programming process can be a bit tricky in some vehicles, so patience and tech support cooperation is a requirement for a successful installation. Please make sure you have a PC computer and have a good level of comfort in operating it before making this purchase.
The new 2019 Ram 1500 has many things you’d expect from a truck: vast towing capacity, a bountiful maximum payload, and loads of horsepower. But it also has something you might not expect: a massive 12-inch touchscreen display embedded in the dashboard that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The display is just shy of the 17-inch behemoth found in the Tesla Model S or X, but after spending a few minutes with it on the show floor here in Detroit, it feels just as vibrant and sharp. It’s also just about as responsive as the one that Tesla uses, which is to say it’s not particularly speedy or accurate. It’s easy to swipe or tap so fast that the system doesn’t keep up so well, multitouch inputs are hit or miss, and at least one of the trucks on the show floor already suffered a pretty bad bug that slid the menu icons down “below” the viewing area. Hey, at least there are still plenty of physical controls surrounding the screen.
Fiat Chrysler is powering the new Ram’s computer-sized screen with the fourth generation of the company’s own infotainment software, called UConnect. Its bubbly, gradated icons aren’t going to win any design awards, but most of the menus are easy to read and navigate. A persistent row of icons at the bottom allow quick access to things like satellite radio, climate and seat temperature controls, and navigation, while a home button in the top left corner makes it easy to always return to the UI’s starting point.
What’s neat about UConnect on this massive display is that you can split-screen two apps, meaning you could run SiriusXM in one half while the Ram’s navigation guides you in the other. And the new Ram supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though they can only run in this split-screen mode. It makes sense — vertical screens aren’t exactly all the rage in the automotive world. And this is how Volvo handles CarPlay on its own infotainment system. But it’s a little jarring on a screen this big, especially considering how familiar Apple and Google are with designing mobile operating systems in a portrait layout. At the very least, it would be nice to be able to set Apple Maps or Google Maps full screen.
There are a few other technological accoutrements in the new Ram, like a wireless charging pad and a 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. It’s also a hybrid. Who knew slugging around in a truck could feel so futuristic?
We"ve left the time when trucks were merely implements of work far in the rearview, and as such, any review of one needs to include an evaluation of the big, fat touchscreen smack in the middle of it. Forget any philosophizing about whether screens belong in trucks or what trucks are "supposed" to be used for. That horse is out of the barn. Our 2019 Ram 1500 has the biggest screen of all, so let"s talk about it.
The optional 12.0-inch Uconnect screen offered by Ram helped put this truck over the top when it won our 2019 Truck of the Year award. All trucks offer touchscreens at this point, and some don"t even sell a trim level without one. Ram, and its parent company FCA, have long been leaders in terms of the software on the screen, but the 2019 Ram 1500 brought the hardware, too.
Installing a massive, portrait-oriented screen in the dash gave Ram a lot of opportunities to address the inherent drawbacks of screens. First and foremost, larger screens can fit larger text, buttons, and images on them if you program them right. This makes whatever"s on the screen easier to read at a glance. It makes it easier to find and press the virtual button you"re looking for. It means less time with your eyes off the road.
Such an advantage isn"t appreciated until it"s taken away. Using the same excellent Uconnect software in other FCA products after having gotten used to the big screen is a disappointing eye-opener. The 8.0-inch screen in many other FCA products is the industry average size, but every line of text and virtual button is smaller and crammed up closer to other things on the screen. Finding the information you need takes more concentration, as does hitting the right virtual button. Once you"ve been spoiled by the big screen, little ones feel inadequate.
Of course, you wouldn"t have to spend any time at all looking for virtual buttons if there were real, tangible, physical buttons and knobs you could find with muscle memory and your sense of touch. Ram"s got you there, too. Lining either side of the screen are hard buttons for the driver and passenger"s climate controls and knobs for radio volume and tuning. And if you"d prefer not to take your hands off the wheel no matter what the interface, there are buttons on the back sides of the steering wheel spokes at nine and three for volume and tuning controls, or you could use voice commands.
The latter are a mixed bag. Recognizing natural speech is difficult enough for a computer before you consider dialects, syntax, and background noise. Ram"s system does pretty well understanding clear, concise commands, but it"s not like talking to Siri, Alexa, or Google. You don"t ask for things, you give it orders.
Integrating those outside technologies is the real triumph here. Some automakers have trouble even doing that, but Ram has hit it out of the park with the mega screen. See, on any normal, landscape-oriented screen, CarPlay or Android Auto take over the whole screen. Now, you have to switch back and forth between user interfaces, one for the smart phone functions and one for the vehicle functions. Not the Ram. CarPlay or Android Auto is simply assigned one of the two "cards," the upper or lower half of the screen (you can swap cards with the push of a virtual button). The other card can be whatever other primary system you want: audio, climate controls, navigation, phone, or Sirius XM Travel Link services.
Even when you"re not using CarPlay or Android Auto, Ram"s card system is a brilliant bit of customization. Want to be able to pick and choose between your radio presets without losing the navigation? Put "em on two different cards. Need the map up high so you don"t miss a turn? Put it on top until you get out of the city, then swap it to the bottom when you"re out on the highway with miles to go before the next instruction. Or make any card full screen for more detail.
Of course, no software is completely free of bugs, or you wouldn"t have to update the apps on your phone every week. The big screen on our long-term Ram wasn"t free of them, either. As we reported in an earlier update, ours had an issue with the backup camera, which takes over the upper card when the truck is in reverse (the lower card is replaced at the same time by seat heating/cooling controls, a nice touch when you"re getting ready to back out of the driveway in the morning). We had an intermittent issue with the camera image refusing to go away when the truck was shifted out of reverse, but a software update at the dealer during a normal service took care of it.Looks good! Filling the instrument cluster on the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 is the standard 3.5-inch driver information display. Fuel gauge and digital coolant temperature display are strategically placed for easy reference while driving, and the sharp, crisp display is easily customizable to showcase preset information of the driver’s choice.
The driver can customize the reconfigurable 3.5-inch driver information display touchscreen by scrolling through menus using the steering-wheel-mounted controls. Available menus include speedometer, vehicle information, fuel economy, trip, information, audio, stored messages, screen setup and settings, and turn-by-turn navigation, if the vehicle is equipped with navigation. For 2019, Ram pickups were available with either 8.4- or 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screens. Unfortunately, a number of problems have been reported by owners, like the display going blank, showing error messages, and more. A recall was also issued due to the reverse image remaining even when in Drive.
Several other glitches have been reported, like the radio changing without input and random error messages. Regardless, Ram’s Uconnect system is one of the best infotainment screens currently on offer.
2019 marks the fifth generation of the Ram pickup, including the 1500, 2500 HD, and heavier models. While earlier variants featured an optional 8.4-inch center screen, those from 2019 onward also offered a massive 12-inch Uconnect system.
Most commonly, the screen randomly goes blank. A recall was also issued over the reverse image remaining on display even once shifted to Drive. Other issues include radio stations changing without input, screens only half displaying, and more.
“Anyone have issues with the 12-inch screen not turning on? Screen is just black. No radio, backup camera, etc.,” says one 2019 Ram owner. “I turned the truck off and re-started it and it came on… 23,000 miles on it.”
A stream of replies echo the same story, all from Rams from the fifth generation onward with the 12-inch screen. “I have had the black screen twice now. Both times, it just disappeared randomly,” shares one owner. “Yep,” agrees another 2019 Ram owner. “Happens now and again. Believe me, you’re not alone.”
Simply put, a software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The standard requires the reverse image to not display for longer than 10 seconds, as it can be distracting for drivers as they fidget with the controls.
There are currently four pages of replies, all stating similar experiences, “Having the same issues with my 2019 Ram 1500. Screen freezes. Can’t do anything. Yesterday it started going on and off. Can’t access a lot of the features.”
Scrolling through the forum, you’ll see that many owners are sharing screenshots of the issues. These range from error messages, lines of code, or screens that are black or only half displaying.
Yes, Ram Pickups from 2019 forward have a few issues with their touchscreens. Should you avoid the model because of them? No. In fact, the Uconnect system is one of the best compared to Sync in the Ford F-150 or Infotainment3/MyLink in the Chevy Silverado.
To reset the Ram"s Uconnect system, turn the key in the ignition to the "run" position. Press the top right corner of the Uconnect screen for 10-20 seconds. Release. Uconnect will go black and then power on again.
On the surface, the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 appears to be a great option for consumers looking for a reliable pickup truck. Common models of the top-selling vehicle include the Classic, EcoDiesel, and TRX. The pickup stands from a very competitive field with its excellent fuel economy, spacious cabin, and outstanding durability.
Unfortunately, customers quickly found major complications after driving their new pickup trucks in the first year of purchase. Despite being a newer model, there appears to be a long list of issues that affect the 2019 Ram 1500. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are currently 22 recalls that include the 2019 Ram 1500. They involve problems with braking axles, airbags, driveshafts, and other components.
A high number of owners of new Ram 1500s have experienced safety defects in their cars within months of purchase. 2019 Ram 1500 problems include symptoms involving the engine, electrical system, transmission, and steering systems.
Engine problems in the 2019 Ram pickup are common. Drivers routinely report hearing high-pitched squealing noises in the engine area of their cars right before the air conditioning begins to blow hot air. Acceleration can also be an issue. Some Ram drivers say their trucks randomly accelerate or decelerate while in motion. Strong fumes and ticking noises are also not uncommon.
One FCA customer describes extensive symptoms in their vehicle, “the other day I could smell a strong odor coming from the hood of my 2019 Ram. I started feeling a little woozy and light-headed from the amount of exhaust fumes coming from the engine. I later investigated the smell and found that the engine was also making a loud ticking noise as well.
Additionally, the engines in affected vehicles may also stall, suddenly shut off, or fail to start. These problems are serious safety concerns for Ram drivers who encounter them while operating their vehicles.
Numerous models in FCA’s lineup have been recalled for engine troubles. This year in May, a group of Ram customers, including two 1500 Ram pickup drivers, filed a class action lawsuit against FCA, alleging that the automaker knowingly sold vehicles with defective components that can result in engine ticking noises or even engine failure. Ram 1500 drivers have encountered issues with nearly every electrical component in the cab of the truck. Lights malfunction, the dashboard displays can go blank, car batteries can drain, and power mirrors can refuse to move. Random recurring warning lights are also a problem. Electrical issues like these can make the vehicle impossible to start or disable important vehicle operating functions like the navigation system.
One Ram driver told NHTSA the following, “started my vehicle and the instrument panel was blank. I can’t get messages, warnings, cruise control information, or anything else that provides vehicle operating specifications (engine temperature, oil temperature, transmission temperature, etc.). Failure of the instrument cluster to properly illuminate prevents me from receiving warnings about the vehicle’s systems and increases the risk of crash.”
The transmission system in the 2019 1500 Ram does not appear to be durable or reliable. Rear axles routinely fail, which can cause the wheels to lock in place. 2019 Ram 1500 transmission problems can cause the following symptoms in affected pickups:
These issues can be dangerous, one driver wrote about this experience in their formal complaint to NHTSA: ““While stopping at the red light and applying the brake, the truck experienced a sudden acceleration burst.
Even though the brake was fully applied, the engine was accelerating on its own and pushing the truck. At low speed (<5 mph) and with the brake fully applied, the truck hit a minivan in front of me and continued to push it towards the intersection in bursts as I was depressing the brake pedal.”
Steering issues frequently appear in the 2019 1500 Ram. Drivers report losing the ability to steer their pickup trucks. Steering can lock in place suddenly while the vehicle is in motion. Structurally, the 2019 model year Ram 1500 appears to be loose. Because of this, components do not seem to work well in unison with each other, causing both steering suspension problems. Several formal complaints filed with NHTSA mention hearing strange rattling noises in the steering suspension area.
In 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled about 160,000 2019 Ram 1500 vehicles due to steering issues. Defective battery ground circuit fasteners improperly installed during manufacturing can apparently result in loss of power steering in affected vehicles. The fastener can loosen enough to create an open circuit that eventually cuts power steering while driving. This can cause sudden understeering or oversteering in affected Ram pickups.

Yesterday while browsing through our forums section I noticed a few members had mentioned that the 12-inch Uconnect was showing up on Rams build and price configurator on the Big Horn trim. To ensure this wasn’t just an error on the build and price system this morning I reached out to our friends at Ram Trucks who were able to confirm to us that the 12-inch screen is now available as an option on Big Horn models.
The “footlong” is a $2,095 (All prices are USD) option on the Big Horn and comes standard with Navigation. Compared to the 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C system with navigation which retails for $1,395. The 12-inch Uconnect system does force the Big Horn Level 2 Equipment Group, which adds another $2,400 to the bottom line.
