2019 ram big horn truck display screens pricelist

The new 2019 Ram 1500 has many things you’d expect from a truck: vast towing capacity, a bountiful maximum payload, and loads of horsepower. But it also has something you might not expect: a massive 12-inch touchscreen display embedded in the dashboard that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The display is just shy of the 17-inch behemoth found in the Tesla Model S or X, but after spending a few minutes with it on the show floor here in Detroit, it feels just as vibrant and sharp. It’s also just about as responsive as the one that Tesla uses, which is to say it’s not particularly speedy or accurate. It’s easy to swipe or tap so fast that the system doesn’t keep up so well, multitouch inputs are hit or miss, and at least one of the trucks on the show floor already suffered a pretty bad bug that slid the menu icons down “below” the viewing area. Hey, at least there are still plenty of physical controls surrounding the screen.

Fiat Chrysler is powering the new Ram’s computer-sized screen with the fourth generation of the company’s own infotainment software, called UConnect. Its bubbly, gradated icons aren’t going to win any design awards, but most of the menus are easy to read and navigate. A persistent row of icons at the bottom allow quick access to things like satellite radio, climate and seat temperature controls, and navigation, while a home button in the top left corner makes it easy to always return to the UI’s starting point.

What’s neat about UConnect on this massive display is that you can split-screen two apps, meaning you could run SiriusXM in one half while the Ram’s navigation guides you in the other. And the new Ram supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though they can only run in this split-screen mode. It makes sense — vertical screens aren’t exactly all the rage in the automotive world. And this is how Volvo handles CarPlay on its own infotainment system. But it’s a little jarring on a screen this big, especially considering how familiar Apple and Google are with designing mobile operating systems in a portrait layout. At the very least, it would be nice to be able to set Apple Maps or Google Maps full screen.

There are a few other technological accoutrements in the new Ram, like a wireless charging pad and a 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. It’s also a hybrid. Who knew slugging around in a truck could feel so futuristic?

While browsing through theforums section on our sister site 5thGenRams.com, a few members had mentioned that the popular 12-inch Uconnect system was now showing up on the RamTrucks.com Build & Price configurator for the 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn trim level. To ensure this wasn’t just an error on the configurator system, I reached out to our friends over at the Ram Truck brand who confirmed to us that the 12-inch Uconnect screen is now available as an option on the 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn models.

The “footlong” is a $2,095 (All prices are USD) option on the Big Horn and comes standard with Navigation. Compared to the 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C system with navigation which retails for $1,395. The 12-inch Uconnect system does force the Big Horn Level 2 Equipment Group, which adds another $2,400 to the bottom line. With that being said the Level 2 Equipment Group contains a ton of options such as:

We also reached out to a few dealers friends, and they confirmed that they can order Big Horn models with the 12-inch Uconnect screen now. So potential Ram 1500 Big Horn buyers rejoice. It took a while, but Ram has listened.

Pricing for the 2019 Ram 1500 has been released ahead of the all-new rig"s rollout. Right from the start, there’s a dizzying number of ways to build the light-duty truck of your dreams, but -- as is seemingly always the case -- it will cost you a bit more to get your hands on one than it did last year.

The most basic truck offered at the outset, a 1500 Tradesman 4x2 with a quad cab and a 3.6-liter eTorque-equipped V6, starts at $33,340 (when you factor in the $1,645 destination charge -- $1,695 if you’re a Hawaiian buyer). At the opposite end of the spectrum, a 1500 Limited 4x4 with a crew cab on a long wheelbase starts at a very substantial $59,385, but that rather luxurious stack of cash does get you get a standard 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and that massive 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screen.

For one, destination charges increased, from $1,395 to $1,645, but that’s just a part of it. The big reason: The 2019 1500 launches with no standard cab available. The quad cab is the new starting point, at least for the time being, and the entry price has been bumped upward to reflect that. Compare the cheapest "19 truck to a comparably equipped "18 quad cab model, and the gap narrows substantially; you"ll find that the newer truck costs $1,050 more.

There are plenty of tech and creature comfort features Ram’s initial release doesn’t cover, but it does hit the basics, including powertrain. On that front, the workaday Tradesman trim, plus Bighorn and Rebel trucks, gets a standard 3.6-liter V6.

To get that 5.7-liter Hemi V8, it’ll be an extra $1,195 (it was pricier, at $1,450, in 2018). The eTorque-equipped 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is more expensive at $1,995. In early production, however, all Ram 1500s will come with the non-eTorque V8. So if you absolutely need to be the first on the block with a new Ram, factor that into the price.

Meanwhile, in the upper Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited trucks, the non-eTorque V8 comes standard. To upgrade to the eTorque-equipped V8 when it becomes available, it’s an additional $800.

The useful Ram Box cargo system, which adds storage to the bed above the rear wheel wells, can be added to any truck for $995; the option previously cost $1,295.

To make sense of all the upcoming Ram 1500 variants, and to get an idea of how much your ideal truck will set you back, take a look at the (lengthy) chart below; it includes Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited trucks. Unless Ram has lost its taste for special editions and trims, that’s just the beginning.

Again, all prices below come directly from Ram and are for the base truck. For the Tradesman, Big Horn and Rebel, that means the 3.6-liter V6; prices for the Laramie and Laramie Longhorn reflect the standard 5.7-liter V8. And don’t forget to add in the destination charge.

We"ve left the time when trucks were merely implements of work far in the rearview, and as such, any review of one needs to include an evaluation of the big, fat touchscreen smack in the middle of it. Forget any philosophizing about whether screens belong in trucks or what trucks are "supposed" to be used for. That horse is out of the barn. Our 2019 Ram 1500 has the biggest screen of all, so let"s talk about it.

The optional 12.0-inch Uconnect screen offered by Ram helped put this truck over the top when it won our 2019 Truck of the Year award. All trucks offer touchscreens at this point, and some don"t even sell a trim level without one. Ram, and its parent company FCA, have long been leaders in terms of the software on the screen, but the 2019 Ram 1500 brought the hardware, too.

Installing a massive, portrait-oriented screen in the dash gave Ram a lot of opportunities to address the inherent drawbacks of screens. First and foremost, larger screens can fit larger text, buttons, and images on them if you program them right. This makes whatever"s on the screen easier to read at a glance. It makes it easier to find and press the virtual button you"re looking for. It means less time with your eyes off the road.

Such an advantage isn"t appreciated until it"s taken away. Using the same excellent Uconnect software in other FCA products after having gotten used to the big screen is a disappointing eye-opener. The 8.0-inch screen in many other FCA products is the industry average size, but every line of text and virtual button is smaller and crammed up closer to other things on the screen. Finding the information you need takes more concentration, as does hitting the right virtual button. Once you"ve been spoiled by the big screen, little ones feel inadequate.

Of course, you wouldn"t have to spend any time at all looking for virtual buttons if there were real, tangible, physical buttons and knobs you could find with muscle memory and your sense of touch. Ram"s got you there, too. Lining either side of the screen are hard buttons for the driver and passenger"s climate controls and knobs for radio volume and tuning. And if you"d prefer not to take your hands off the wheel no matter what the interface, there are buttons on the back sides of the steering wheel spokes at nine and three for volume and tuning controls, or you could use voice commands.

The latter are a mixed bag. Recognizing natural speech is difficult enough for a computer before you consider dialects, syntax, and background noise. Ram"s system does pretty well understanding clear, concise commands, but it"s not like talking to Siri, Alexa, or Google. You don"t ask for things, you give it orders.

Integrating those outside technologies is the real triumph here. Some automakers have trouble even doing that, but Ram has hit it out of the park with the mega screen. See, on any normal, landscape-oriented screen, CarPlay or Android Auto take over the whole screen. Now, you have to switch back and forth between user interfaces, one for the smart phone functions and one for the vehicle functions. Not the Ram. CarPlay or Android Auto is simply assigned one of the two "cards," the upper or lower half of the screen (you can swap cards with the push of a virtual button). The other card can be whatever other primary system you want: audio, climate controls, navigation, phone, or Sirius XM Travel Link services.

Even when you"re not using CarPlay or Android Auto, Ram"s card system is a brilliant bit of customization. Want to be able to pick and choose between your radio presets without losing the navigation? Put "em on two different cards. Need the map up high so you don"t miss a turn? Put it on top until you get out of the city, then swap it to the bottom when you"re out on the highway with miles to go before the next instruction. Or make any card full screen for more detail.

Of course, no software is completely free of bugs, or you wouldn"t have to update the apps on your phone every week. The big screen on our long-term Ram wasn"t free of them, either. As we reported in an earlier update, ours had an issue with the backup camera, which takes over the upper card when the truck is in reverse (the lower card is replaced at the same time by seat heating/cooling controls, a nice touch when you"re getting ready to back out of the driveway in the morning). We had an intermittent issue with the camera image refusing to go away when the truck was shifted out of reverse, but a software update at the dealer during a normal service took care of it.Looks good! More details?

2019 ram big horn truck display screens pricelist

The 2019 Ram 1500 doesn’t laugh at cheap gas, but it chuckles in its general direction–at least when fitted with one of two mild-hybrid engines choices available.

The Ram 1500s we’ve driven most often have been equipped with a familiar 5.7-liter V-8 rated at 395 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The V-8 is a smooth, sonorous operator that provides the hefty Ram with good acceleration and the ability to tow up to 12,750 pounds, at least when ordered up with the right array of axle and body configurations.

For an extra grand, the available mild-hybrid system Ram dubs eTorque adds 130 lb-ft of torque with the V-8, 90 lb-ft with the standard 305-hp V-6 to help out with low-speed acceleration and to reduce the gas engine’s workload. We"ve driven the V-8 Ram with eTorque and have found it to be an unusually smooth operator, with good brake modulation and one of the least-obtrusive stop/start systems we"ve encountered. It"s about $1,500 more than the standard V-8, which will take around six years to break even in normal driving.

Ram has calibrated both versions of the system so well, you"ll have to pay close attention to notice anything unusual is taking place. The engine comes to a stop without a judder at stoplights, and jumps back into action invisibly. The hybrid motor slows and restarts the gas engine very smoothly. There"s nearly zero lag from the moment you lift from the brake and reapply the throttle. Given that the battery setup occupies a gym bag"s worth of space under a rear seat, and boost fuel economy by a few miles per gallon on various cycles—and that its V-6 version comes in as the least expensive Ram 1500 powertrain—the mild-hybrid trucks feel like a win.

For a pickup, the Ram 1500 handles well and its ride is almost luxury SUV-smooth. That “for a pickup” qualifier is necessary, though, since this big truck still floats over bumpy terrain and hardly gnaws at curvy roads. Not that it needs to, of course. Isolation from the road is the Ram’s forte; Lariat and higher trim levels feature extensive sound deadening and acoustic glass to keep the outside world, well, out.

An off-road variant, the Ram Rebel, splits the difference between a conventional four-wheeling package and a desert racer like the Ford F-150 Raptor. The Rebel now features an inch-taller coil spring suspension, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, and an electronic locking rear differential. The optional air suspension sits an inch higher in the Rebel than on other Rams, giving the truck a meaner stance.

At high speeds on a washed-out riverbed, the Ram Rebel we drove was entertaining. Its dimensions make it too big for many fire trails, but it’ll be more than happy mud-plugging or dune-bashing.

Four-wheel drive is optional on every Ram except the Rebel, where it’s standard. The base transfer case is a part-time setup not meant for use on dry pavement; an optional system lets users leave their trucks in automatic mode year-round.

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

"I enabled Android Auto. After several attempts, I thought it was operational. However, Bluetooth connection was slower than the one provided by FCA (Ram), it (the phone) did not always connect when I wished it to connect, and I finally deleted the app and resumed Bluetooth connection via manufacturer supplied electronics."

"Randomly the truck is does not recognize that my iPhone is connected via USB. I have purchased many cords from Apple and aftermarket and all do not work at times."

"Apple CarPlay would randomly not recognize my phone, sometimes the buttons on the steering wheel wouldn"t control the phone. Randomly, the screen would go blank and several times the backup camera would not show the lines on the display or go black. I believe all these problems are related to the head unit."

"The display and control icons on the 12 screen screw up intermittently. This is a known problem and they are supposed to be working on a software fix."

"The display screen first started to freeze up on the camera mode about 8 months after purchase. It then started to completely freeze up about 2 months later where I had to completely turn the vehicle off and restart it sometimes multiple times to get the screen to operate. Finally one day it completely stopped working and as such rendered the vehicle completely undrivable and it had to be towed to the dealership to be repaired. Screen completely replaced under warranty with approximately 4 business days down time."

"Intermittently, the display screen will not come on at all. It seems to resolve itself if the car is turned off and allowed to sit for a minute or two then turned back on. The problem has happened about three times in the 12 months I"ve owned the truck."

"It started with the GPS function failing. It would not update position at all and would not accept input or software updates. Noticed that the XM radio functions were reduced i.e. it would not show any data or information referenced to the station I was tuned to. I took it to the dealership who attempted to reboot the software which resulted in the truck not able to function at all. Too many features were disabled that are controlled by the head unit. They placed one on order but it took almost a month for it to arrive. To their credit, they provided me with a new truck to use at no cost for the duration of this process."

"This was Uconnect 4C Nav system with 12" display. Nav system got lost. Seemed to operate normally but location was completely off. Took several trips to dealer leaving car for several days each time. Dealer eventually replaced entire display/radio system. No problems since."

"Twice on a long road trip, it took us the wrong way. It is poorly designed and does not give driver the option to select fastest route which makes it difficult to figure out what is going wrong with it. A friend suggested to pulling off the route into a safe area, shut the car off and then restart the car and reprogram the destination. Also, recommended start out the main road you know is correct and keep going until it gets the idea you have chosen a particular route. NO WAY IT COMPARES TO A GARMIN. You need a road map to get going the right way."

"When playing FM radio the volume "surges" up and down. Dealer is unable to fix. Occurs about 50% of the time when listening to radio. Shutting off the truck and restarting will occasionally fix the issue."

"It was an intermittent problem. Sometimes after starting the truck, no sound would come out of the radio for FM, satellite, or bluetooth at all. But switching to AM for a moment, and switching back to FM, usually resulted in the sound coming back."

"It locks up intermittently with no sound at all. You have to completely shut it off and let it sit all day or night and 95% of the time it works again. RAM says they know about the problem but don’t have fix.. it’s been 3 months now and counting!"

"Sirius worked for the first week of ownership. Then it just quit (would not receive any channels). Talked with Sirius 3 times in that week (all they said was that 2019 Ram 1500s had a recall issue because of something new in that model year). Dealership salesman and service personnel had not heard of any problems or recalls. After a week of trying and calling, it suddenly worked again. No explanation nor remuneration for lost air time."

"Occasionally don"t get any sound out of the speakers, whether it"s the radio playing, or phone. I can turn off the engine and restart and it will come back. This seems to be a known problem in other 2019 Ram 1500"s."

"The panoramic sunroof drain caused a leak. A drain tube for the sunroof has an outside grommet that is located between the bed and the rear cabin. This grommet popped out and allowed rain water to leak in. This made my rear passenger crew cabin soaking wet. This leaking unknowingly went on for months and allowed for mold to grow all over the cabin. In the winter I had frost on the INSIDE windows. I have a great video of that if you want it. I had no idea what was happening until I saw all of the mold on the cabin floor. It was fixed by the dealer, but caused months of problems before it was discovered."

"When the truck is driving in Eco mode and decelerating at a certain RPM (about 1500) there is a pronounced vibration from the driver-side front that reverberates throughout the vehicle, enough that it rattles things in the door pockets in the back seats."

"I think there may be a problem with the drivers side door seal as I get a wind noise on the highway. There is a 2" section of the seal that is folded around the outside of the pillar. This may be the cause but I need to take the vehicle in on warranty to have the dealer check it. There doesn"t appear to be a water leak. I haven"t taken the truck in yet as there haven"t been any other significant issues (other than the backup autobrake) that warrant making an appointment. I"ll wait until my next oil change. Overall, it"s a good truck."

"I actually on to 2019 ram Longhorns one truck the rear brakes squeal when breaking it has been in the shop 12 times had every component replaced and they still cannot stop the squealing."

"Loud squeaking and grinding noise from rear breaks when backing up after truck has been sitting for while, told known issue by dealer but no fix is available yet"

"Certain components stop operating control module burns itself up truck will not charge battery destroyed, there seems to be some severe electrical software whatever. Very concerned about this truck expiring warranty probably will not keep after warranty expires very disappointed."

"Truck has an ongoing issue fueling that is common with Ram"s. After the 1st few gallons filling, the fuel filler neck will back up with fuel causing the pump to shut off due to back flow. You must wait until the fuel neck empties itself and you repeat the process over and over 1-3 gallons at a time until the 30 gal tank is full. Dealer has already replaced the tank and sensor which did not fix the issue. Many other reports of the same model and previous years."

"This shake was noticed during the test drive. Salesman also noticed it. Service gave me their word it was flat spots on tires and if it didn"t go away after a week or so then they would order new tires. It did not go away, so they replaced the tires. Vibration was still there so I brought back to service again and they said two of the new tires would not road force balance so they order a few more. They completed two tire replacements and road force balance, which did appear to help greatly. However after another month or so the vibration slowly became more noticeable. I scheduled service again with another dealer and they said no problem found, even though this has been mentioned many times on Ram forumns online. I gave up on it and traded it in shortly after, because my opportunity to file a lemon law claim expired. I figured it was worth the trip and effort anymore."

"Cylinder head was cracked and they had to rebuild the engine. It was at 21000 miles at the time. Drove it off the lot after they had supposedly fixed it and got 1 mile down the road ave turned around and brought it back because it was shaking so badly. The second time they seem to have gotten it right. We tried to ask about but back from Dodge and they said we didn"t qualify. Many mechanics have told us the Ram 1500 Classic"s have been in their shops a lot and are very poorly made."

In addition, all versions of the Ram 1500 (except for the Tradesman) are available with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system with improved response speed, more memory, and a broader array of features.

Ram offers the 1500 in Quad Cab (extended cab) and Crew Cab styles, with your choice between a gasoline 3.6L V6 with standard eTorque mild-hybrid system, a gasoline 5.7L V8 (without or without eTorque), and a turbocharged 3.0L diesel V6. In addition, a four-wheel-drive (4WD) system is an option on all Ram 1500 models except for the TRX, which is an off-road performance variant and includes it as standard equipment, along with an exclusive supercharged 6.2L V8 engine.

Prices range from $36,995 to $77,475, including the $1,795 destination charge. In total, eight trim levels are available:Ram 1500 Tradesman — Though the Tradesman is a workhorse made for commercial buyers, it includes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power heated side mirrors, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. Vinyl covers the floor and seats, and the Tradesman has a Clean Air interior filtration system

Ram 1500 Big Horn — One step up from the base trim, the Big Horn features carpeting, cloth seats, aluminum wheels, and chrome bumpers. It also provides more options, making this trim a good foundation for personal-use buyers on a budget

Ram 1500 Laramie — Laramie trim adds numerous little luxuries to the Ram 1500, including leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote engine starting. In addition, Uconnect 5 is standard (optional on Big Horn and Lone Star versions) along with better stereo speakers and Ram Connect services, including a Wi-Fi hotspot

Ram 1500 Rebel — The Ram Rebel is based on the Big Horn but adds numerous off-roading features, including a reworked suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and more. Rubber floor mats protect the carpeting, and the Rebel has unique design details to set it apart from other models

Ram 1500 Longhorn — This Western-themed trim adds exclusive exterior detailing, 20-inch wheels, side steps, a spray-in bedliner, and a locking tailgate. Premium leather lines the interior, and the Longhorn also comes with standard navigation, heated rear seats, and parking sensors

Ram 1500 Limited — The Limited is the luxury version of the Ram 1500, equipped with upscale exterior and interior detailing, an air suspension, a larger infotainment system display screen, and more safety technology

Ram 1500 TRX — Equipped with a 702-hp, supercharged V8 engine, and completely reworked mechanicals to support high-speed off-road driving, the Ram TRX is ready to run the length of Baja California without putting a single one of its 35-inch all-terrain tires on pavement. But given its 12-mpg fuel economy rating, you should bring extra gas

Ram last redesigned its full-size pickup truck for the 2019 model year. At the time, the new Ram 1500 earned critical acclaim for its appealing design, quality interior, technologically advanced infotainment system, and its overall towing and hauling capabilities. The Ram’s unique rear suspension configuration and available air suspension also garnered praise for giving the truck an uncommonly smooth ride and capable handling.

On the strength of the latest Ram 1500, the truckmaker is chipping away at the sales success of its primary rivals: the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150. In 2021, Ram successfully grabbed the number-two slot on the sales charts, dethroning the Chevy. Ram has also put the popular 1500 pickup on a continuous improvement program, adding powertrains, new features, next-generation technologies, and special-edition models since the 2019 redesign.

The most significant update for the 2022 model year is a switch to a new Uconnect 5 infotainment platform. Ram’s parent company, Stellantis, claims that Uconnect 5 is five times more powerful than the technology it replaces. That means it offers a faster response to inputs, the ability to customize the user experience to personal preferences, sharper graphics, and much more. Additionally, all 2022 Ram 1500 models add a new air filtration system that can remove a claimed 95% of all particulates from the truck’s interior air.

For this 2022 Ram 1500 review, I test-drove the Limited trim level in Southern California. It came with a long list of options and a price of $77,260, including the $1,795 destination charge. Highlights from its optional equipment list included a turbocharged EcoDiesel engine, 4WD, the Limited Level 1 Group, the Limited 10th Anniversary Package, the Technology Group, trailer-towing equipment, a tonneau cover, and more. Ram provided the vehicle for this Ram 1500 Crew Cab review.

The Ram 1500’s clean, balanced styling isn’t trying too hard, unlike that of some full-size light-duty pickup trucks. As a result, it has classic good looks and proper proportions. Since the Limited trim level is luxurious, the test model’s added chrome trim and polished aluminum wheels were appropriate and added some extra class without going overboard.

Inside, by layering on the luxury, the Ram 1500 Limited’s cabin looks busier to the eye. The numerous patterns and textures can sharply contrast with one another, and the test truck’s two-tone interior treatment amplifies the discordance to some degree. However, the materials are high in quality, and I particularly liked the fabric trim on the seats and door panels. In terms of interior materials, there isn’t much physical evidence connecting the Ram 1500 Limited to the base Tradesman model.

Comfort is king in the Ram 1500 Limited crew cab. The test truck’s heated and ventilated front and rear seats provide exceptional support, and there is plenty of room for five people to stretch out and enjoy the ride. Power deploying running boards make getting into and out of the truck easier, and the interior is hushed on the highway. All the truck is missing is a set of massaging front seats.

Ram logically arranges the dashboard controls in a symmetrical layout, except for the transmission knob and 4WD system buttons. Primary controls for the stereo and climate systems, and those for the available trailer-towing technology, are large enough to use when you’re wearing gloves. Storage is generous, too, with dual glove compartments, a large configurable center console, a tray under the rear seat cushion, and Ram Bins beneath the rear cab floor.

RamBox offers similar hidden storage in the form of locking storage bins built into the sides of the cargo bed, but the test truck did not have this option. However, it did come with the multi-function rear tailgate design, which lowers in the traditional way but also features a 60/40-split design with each portion swinging to the sides to allow you to stand closer to the cargo bed when loading and unloading the truck. In addition, an available assist step deploys from under the bumper to help make it easier to get into the bed when necessary.

With good looks, a high-quality cabin, hidden storage, plenty of secure in-cab cargo space, and a trick tailgate, the Ram 1500’s design is appealing. It might lack some of the flashier features found on some competitors, but the details here are undeniably useful.

Ram’s new Uconnect 5 infotainment system is standard in all 1500 light-duty trucks except for the Tradesman. In most instances, it includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen display. However, the Ram 1500 Limited test truck had a larger 12-inch touchscreen display mounted portrait-style in the center of the dashboard. Buttons for the dual-zone automatic climate control system and traditional knobs for power/volume and radio tuning flanked the screen, while a strip of virtual menu tiles lived at the bottom of the display.

If you buy a Ram 1500 with this 12-inch infotainment system, it is worth your time to go through everything and set the truck up to your personal preferences sooner than later. Also, be sure to check every menu and sub-menu to see what’s available. You might be surprised to discover some features and settings in locations you wouldn’t expect.

I enjoyed a mostly trouble-free experience using Uconnect 5. The voice recognition system isn’t entirely natural but improves the previous Uconnect technology Ram used in the 1500. Also, in response to one of my standard test prompts, it was clear the navigation data set could use some extra parsing. For example, asking for directions to the nearest hospital produced irrelevant results that had nothing to do with finding a way to help, and fast.

The test vehicle also came with an outstanding 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system that puts to shame what most other truckmakers offer in their models. Additional tech included a sizable head-up display, a digital rearview camera mirror, and a semi-autonomous parking assist system that steers the Ram into parallel and perpendicular spaces while the driver operates the transmission, brake, and accelerator.

Ram’s Trailer Reverse Steering Control is another helpful technology. Drivers use a knob on the dashboard to aim a trailer in the desired direction, and the truck autonomously steers to execute those instructions. In combination with the Ram’s numerous surround- and trailer-view cameras, this helps to make towing easier.

Ram offers numerous driving assistance and collision avoidance systems for the 1500 pickup, but they’re optional instead of standard equipment. The truckmaker also restricts many of them to higher trim levels. This practice is not uncommon in pickup trucks, but considering how effective (if irritating) these technologies are at preventing or lessening the impact of accidents, making them more broadly available would be nice.

Aside from the occasional irritation the overeager lane-keeping assist system aroused, the only problem I had with the Ram’s safety features was related to the rear automatic braking system. Despite the truck’s towering height, this feature did not play nice with my angled driveway and crowned suburban street, slamming the Ram to a halt the first few times I reversed out of my driveway. Turning this feature off resolved the problem. But, of course, doing that could’ve also caused a new one.

Truck buyers love the rumble of a good, old-fashioned "Hemi" V8 engine. But they don’t like the fuel economy those engines return. At Ram, the answer to the efficiency issue is the optional turbocharged 3.0L diesel V6, also known as the EcoDiesel.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, and depending on which version of the Ram 1500 it’s bolted into, this turbodiesel V6 is estimated to return 24 to 26 mpg in combined driving. I averaged 24.8 mpg on my evaluation route, running the truck in automatic 4WD with the air suspension in its middle position. Remember, though, that the test vehicle’s hard tonneau cover likely helped to reduce aerodynamic drag on the highway.

While this real-world result is undeniably appealing, the engine upgrade cost $3,200. In other words, it’s going to take some time before the EcoDiesel pays for itself and starts to save you money. Ultimately, though, it will. But you can achieve those gains faster with the more affordable Duramax turbodiesel engine option that Chevy and GMC offer in their trucks.

The EcoDiesel generates 260 hp at 3,600 rpm and 480 lb.-ft. of torque starting at 1,600 rpm. That torque, coupled with the engine’s faint characteristic clatter, makes the drivetrain appealing beyond its fuel economy figures. Ram says the engine can tow up to 12,560 lbs, but as installed in the Limited 4WD Crew Cab, the rating amounted to 9,600 lbs of trailer and 1,780 lbs of payload.

There is enough grunt here to make the Ram EcoDiesel satisfying to drive. Punch it at highway speeds, such as when passing slower vehicles, and the engine can seem a little gutless. Otherwise, you can easily ride the engine’s substantial swell of torque like a surfer at Waimea Bay.

Ram’s five-link, solid-axle rear suspension design uses progressive rate coil springs instead of traditional leaf springs, contributing to the 1500’s laudable ride and handling qualities. The optional four-corner air suspension replaces the coil springs and offers five height settings. It gives the Ram 1500 an even smoother ride and planted handling unlike most pickup trucks we’ve ever driven.

When you combine the EcoDiesel’s torque, the optional air suspension, and the Limited trim’s upscale and quiet cabin, you get a full-size truck that drives like a luxury sedan and returns better fuel economy than a typical three-row crossover SUV. If you’ve never experienced it before, it’s downright miraculous.

The Ram 1500 is deserving of its second-place sales finish behind the Ford F-150 in 2021. However, the competition isn’t sitting still, so the Ram is under constant threat.

Ford, for example, just introduced a redesigned F-150 Raptor and is coming for the Ram TRX with a V8-powered Raptor R. Chevrolet and GMC are giving their full-size light-duty models a thorough refresh at the halfway point of the 2022 model year, along with more capable off-road versions of each. Plus, diesel power is more affordable in the Chevy and GMC. Toyota is out with a new 2022 Tundra, too, complete with an available high-powered and high-efficiency hybrid powertrain.

And then there is the coming wave of electric trucks to consider. Ford is about to roll out its first electric F-150, the Lightning. Chevrolet has revealed its own electric pickup, the unimaginatively named Silverado EV, which goes on sale in 2023. Finally, startup Rivian is slowly beginning to deliver examples of its R1T.

Where’s Ram in all of this? It has an electric truck coming, but no details are available just yet. If you ask me, it should be called the Ramcharger.

The Ram 1500 butts heads with the expected rivals in the large light-duty pickup truck segment. They include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the Ford F-150, the GMC Sierra 1500, the Nissan Titan, and the Toyota Tundra. However, only the Titan’s design and engineering pre-dates that of the Ram 1500.

Ford and General Motors (Chevrolet and GMC combined) dominate full-size truck sales. Still, the 2022 Ram 1500 holds its own with up to 2,300 lbs of maximum payload capacity and 12,750 lbs of maximum towing capacity, depending on the truck’s configuration and powertrain.
