Automobiles are equipped with some 50-60 fuses per vehicle. The bulk of these are stored in fuse boxes installed in the engine compartment (below the hood) and the passenger compartment (under the instrument panel in front of the driver’s seat). It is a good idea to confirm the location of the fuse boxes in your vehicle.

Automotive fuses can be broadly divided into fast-acting fuses that protect audio and lamp circuits and time-delay fuses that protect the car battery and motor circuits. Fast-acting fuses evolved from the older glass-tube fuses into auto fuses and later into mini fuses (compact auto fuses), which are the standard today. Recently, low-profile fuses that are even more compact than mini fuses have also appeared on the market. Among time-delay fuses, slow blow fuses are the most common type. Although often used as a generic term, slow blow fuses are available in many different shapes depending on automaker needs. Advances in slow blow fuses have given rise to new types such as multi slow blow fuses, which protect multiple circuits, and battery terminal fuses. There are also special fuses for hybrid and other high-voltage vehicles.

When exposed to an electric current that exceeds its carrying capacity, the metal wire inside a fuse is designed to melt in order to interrupt the current. The time required for the wire to melt is rated for various currents based on international standards. In the absence of fuses, current would continue to flow from the battery and may cause a fire in the worst-case scenario.

Fuses are used by automakers all over the world. Auto fuses, mini fuses and low-profile fuses are governed by international standards and used in vehicles across the world. Our auto fuses, mini fuses and profile fuses are used in vehicles manufactured in Japan as well as in South Korea and elsewhere in Asia.
