gopro hero lcd screen not working in stock
It may be either a loose connection to the LCD screen, that the LCD screen is faulty and needs to be replaced or worst case that there is a fault on the motherboard.
Try shining a torch at an angle close to the LCD screen to check if you can detect an image at all when using the camera. It will be very faint so try it in a darkened room if possible.
If you can detect an image it means that there is a backlight problem with the screen. Either there is no power being supplied from the motherboard to the backlight circuit in the LCD screen or the backlight circuit in the screen is faulty and the screen will have to be replaced as it cannot be repaired. Hopefully it is not a motherboard problem in supplying backlight power to the screen.
If you cannot detect an image (or even if you can) then unfortunately without a schematic, the only way to determine if it is a problem with the screen or the motherboard is to replace one or the other. Again hopefully it is not a motherboard problem.
Here’s a link to a video that shows how to replace the LCD screen + digitizer in the camera. This will also help you to check if the LCD video flex cable connection is OK.
Here’s a link to the GoPro Hero5 Black Repair guides which may also help if the video isn’t clear enough at some points. Unfortunately there is no ifixit guide showing the LCD screen removal.
I have the exact same problem. Bought my GoPro 2 weeks ago, used it for 2 weeks... downloaded / updated the firmware this morning using the iPhone app... restarted and now the back / LCD screen doesn"t turn on at all. I chatted with support for 2 hours and they had me manually install the update which I downloaded here:
and then installed by coping the resulting "UPDATE" folder to my SD card, which after a couple tries did take but didn"t fix the problem. I"m left with a 2 week old GoPro that has a non-functioning LCD screen.
I"d put money on the firmware update being the issue as 1) that"s the only thing that"s changed for me since this morning and b) the problem is that the touchscreen isn"t displaying anything at all.
Also make sure you are turning on the camera using the power button on the side of the camera (also known as the mode button) and not the button on the top of the camera (also known as the shutter button). If you use the button on the top of the camera, this will activate Quick Capture mode. This will start the camera recording immediatly but you won"t be able to to use the touch screen.
Hi! Just bought a GoPro hero 10 and after a day of filming the lcd screens turned off. The front screen is a grey color, but the back is completely black. The screens aren’t reacting to any touching either. The camera works regardless and I can connect it to the phone and use that as a monitor. I called GoPro and he said he should open a case, but it’s been 3 days and I haven’t heard anything…
I think I might be having the same issue here. The main screen is getting power as it shows light, and the touchscreen is working according to the front display, yet there is nothing showing on the main screen. The issue started after I had fixed a different issue with the battery and replaced the SD card. I had read that inserting the SD card incorrectly could damage the ribbon cable for the LCD screen, but that can"t be the case for me because I made sure that the SD was in properly. I have attempted to manually update the camera multiple times, but it is impossible to reset it because I can"t see the screen to navigate to the reset option. Have you figured out a fix for it yet?
I"m having a major issue wtih my GoPro Hero 7 Black. I turned it on yeasterday and out of the blue the touch screen was not working, completly unresponsive to any tap. The power button and the capture button are working fine.
My Hero 7 seems to power on but doesn"t get the LCD screen to come on, on the back. The small screen on the front just displays Black 7 and doesn"t ever get to the normal screen you see when shoting video. Here is what I have tried:
7. Had it plugged into my computer with Quik running and the camera doesn"t register. Although if I remove the SDcard from the camera and put it in a usb reader, Quik does pick up that it was in a Hero 7. So there must be something happening in the camera.
Send it in, they sent me a new one. The only steps are a manual reset. Or to just use the go pro app as a screen, but it will not work anymore after the manual reset because you need the screen for initial setup. So kids going forward if your screen is blacked out but it’s already set up with the app and you’re out of warranty just use the GoPro app as a screen, it sucks but do that or maybe get the attachment screen MOD luckily I still had 6mo left on warranty and I can’t justify spending $20 a month for the go pro plus joint I mean you’re basically buying a GoPro every year so... get that roll cage and the heavy duty accessories, that Amazon crap is totally unreliable it will break! I promise you, it’s going to break especially the handle bar mounts!
thanks for your reply. The plastic cover isn’t on the GoPro anymore. I took everything off and my GoPro worked for a whole day, but suddenly my touch sceen didn’t work anymore. I tried to manual update the GoPro as well and I also tried holding the power button for 10 seconds and leaving the battery and SD card out of the GoPro for a while. Nothing works. When I inserted the battery after a while and insert the (on computer formatted) SD card the GoPro was factory reseted. And now I can’t even record anymore because I can’t continue in the setup because my touch screen still doesn’t work. I requested a return and I sent my GoPro back this morning. I ordered a new GoPro fromcameranu.nlbecause I need my GoPro on Friday. Hope this won’t happen to me again and if it does, I will reach out again, hoping there is a solution for this issue.
Brand new out of the box, got a similar issue! My touch screen is black, the front screen is lit but not showing any info. The reset doesn"t work. I can"t believe after paying so much for this, it just doesn"t work!! After reading other comments, GoPro clearly has a massive issue with quality checking their new products before they leave the factory and then maybe they also send out returned products too.
To remove the LCD panel that does not work, you need very thin screwdrivers (like for watches or mobile phone) and tools for unmounting mobile phone (<10€ on Amazon), but I also used an old credit card and a heat gun (amazon, look for Seekone which can regulate the temperature about 30€).
You need a good glue / silicone to seal it back. In the operation, the gopro looses the 10m waterproof... But an underwater case costs nothing. My total cost was about 25€ and 2 hours work... 8 times less than buying a second hand gopro ....
Naturally, don"t do anything like that if your gopro is under warranty. There are companies doing for you, but I could not see any for less than 130€ in France.
When I turn on my GoPro Hero8 screen does not turn on. The issue began when I was charging the GoPro and auto uploading the footage. At one point, I tried to press stop on the fotage upload, but the touch screen was not responding (I wanted to check the battery percentage). I was able to stop the charge at one point, turned off the camera and from that moment on when I turned it back on, the LCD no longer turned on. I submitted a ticket and received a call back--was told to hold the mode/power button for 8 seconds, and voila, the camera"s display turned on. I got off the call, recorded a video, then recorded a second one. When I turned it back on to replay it, the LCD no longer work. I attempted the 8 second button hold to no avail.
The GoPro app is the quickest, easiest way to update your camera–all you need is a smartphone or tablet and access to Wi-Fi. You can also use the app to control your camera remotely, view your photos and videos and share on the fly.
Note – if you don’t see “GoPro App” in the menu along with “Wi-Fi RC”, then you need to update your camera’s software before you can use the GoPro App. You can update your HERO3 software here: http://gopro.com/update.
In your smart phone or tablet’s Wi-Fi Network settings menu, connect to the camera’s Wi-Fi network. You should find the name of your camera listed in your available Wi-Fi networks for you to select. By default, the name will be something like “GOPRO-BP-….”. The default password is “goprohero”.
