s900 lcd display settings made in china

I have one of these (Yamaha PSR-S900 Arranger Keyboard Workstation) and after 7 years, the display started going defective – half of the screen was duplicated, lines running through the middle of the display.

This renders use of the keyboard relatively impossible (because there is still a composite video out that can be sent to a portable DVD/LCD player, which will still work for the purposes of reading what’s on the display – your patch selections, mixer settings, scoring, sheet music, file selections, etc.)

I hit eBay and found a few replacement display units for about $150 (shipped from China, but made in Japan), and figured it would be worth trying (after all, a new PSR-S950 still runs about $2000.)

The display itself connects via a 10-wire flat ribbon connector that is press-fit into the LCD’s connector. These are the somewhat fragile, but when carefully removed, basically easily re-inserted into the same receptacle (similar to re-wiring a video game console mod.) In the photo, this receptacle is on the right-center side of the display.

The bottom assembly sort of resembles this view from a PSR-1500 (for general reference – the PSR-S900 is more symmetrical in design) The larger screws are connecting the bottom boards to the 2 speaker enclosures and then attaching the wood panels to the bottom plastic shell; the smaller screws go into those taller pyramid-looking tower holes in the bottom case:

This is an interior view of where the LCD is actually mounted (underneath the front panel; this view is of the bottom of the top half of the keyboard):

To access this view, you will be removing the 6 mounting screws holding the CPU board box (the large aluminum vented box sitting on top of the LCD panel area.)  There are grounding wires on 3 sides of this box that are simply attached with more of the small panel screws.  You can either remove the screws that attach the box to the mounting posts, or the screws that hold the posts to the top assembly (whichever ones you can access most easily.)  The only connections I removed to access the LCD were the ethernet cable plugging into the CPU box, and the 2 white multi-wire connections that plug into the back-panel connector board (the one that has the USB plugs, video connectors and MIDI In/Out – it’s mounted to the top (silver) case assembly):

Once the CPU box is unmounted and moved aside (untaping the wires that are taped to the box), you can usually access the first 2 (of 4) screws mounting the LCD to the front panel (these are the 2 closest to the keyboard.) You can remove just the screws attaching the LCD to the aluminum mounts (you do not need to remove the mounts themselves).  To access the other 2 (the ones towards the back panel), if you don’t have a right-angle screwdriver that can fit under the back-panel connector board (about 1-inch clearance), you can remove the 6 screws holding the connector board to the top case assembly (4 of these have bendable wire tie-downs on them; the other 2 seem to hold the mylar foil shielding tabs.)  There is also a single screw that connects the coaxial video connector to the back panel that must also be removed to move the board.

Inside my particular model (which might have been an earlier build than the one my replacement LCD was designed to fit) the high voltage board was connected with a longer set of leads to the defective LCD.  So I unmounted it, rotated it clockwise 90 degrees to move the connector closer to the LCD, and re-mounted it using a single screw to hold it in-place again.

After un-mounting the defective LCD, I removed the existing ribbon connector and before mounting the new one, re-attached the ribbon into the new LCD (drawing a line with a marker on the ribbon helps you remember how deep it was plugged in before).  Plugged in the HV power lead and tested the power up to confirm the new display actually works (the first time, there were a bunch of alternating shadows, indicating I hadn’t seated the ribbon connector properly.)

4 screws back in to hold the LCD, 6+1 screws to re-mount the connector board, 6 more to remount the CPU box (and re-connect the ground wires, and 2 of them hold the box shut), then you can shut the case and replace all of those other screws you took out that hold the case together.

There is only one case I know of where an 810LED display has a drop-in LCD replacement. This is in an ebikeling kit I bought in 2019 which has a 5 pin digital 810LED. It swaps with his SW900 LCD, and only that LCD. I have both displays and found they swap into his current controller, and the 810 is the better performer. To further confuse things, his kits from 2015-2017 used a 5 pin analog 810LED, which is not compatible. If you look inside, it"s the usual 4 pin 10LED with a dummy wire.

A typical digital LCD display has 5 pins. It uses two pins to send data back and forth, much like.a USB interface. It can send commands to set PAS level, invoke Walk mode, and receive data such as speedometer info and watts coming back from the controller. It also gets error codes from the controller. Because all of this has no standards, the displays won"t work with other peoples controllers.

Displays like the SW900 and S900 look identical, but are probably copied from someone like Kingmeter. They have different firmware and won"t necessarily work. .

And since they copy each other most displays have the same pinout, so you can hook them up in different controller. They will power up, but won"t work. Often they will turn on the foreign controller, but cannot talk to it. In many cases, the controller has a default PAS and throttle is enabled, so the bike kind of works. Very confusing.

off topic a little, but I have an older Clavinova CVP105 were the backlight works, but no data on the screen. All the buttons and functions work surrounding the screen. What part of the LCd relates to the data generation?. I thought it usually is a circuit on the main board, but all functions still work....any ideas out there?

My LCD died in 2012 just when the unit ran out of warranty, and the repair estimate at that time was $600 USD, so I didn"t do it and just put it on the shelf. At the time, Yamaha would not send a replacement part for free. I tried it again now - the new estimate is $750 (parts and labor), so i contacted Yamaha and this time they offered the replacement LCD for free. I still have to pay labor, which is $300 (4 hours at $75/hr).

at first i had some vertical lines off at the right side of the screen!now all black lcd stopped working! yamaha must recognize the mistake of low quality lcd in an expensive keyboard instrument!

Regards prayed to by: Anonymous to contact me if you can thank you, I have the same problem with my S900 Yamaha just flashing lights all the way to smolder doesnotfunction blinks and nothing on the screen to see everything was quivered slightly and the screen, but can see where it can be procured the Inverter or LED display for I am from Croatian

my yamaha PSR S550 Display just died . initially there were vertical lines showing whe i was in the middle of playing and now nothing . Why Yamaha , i Trusted you

Got the official diagnosis for my PSR-S900 that died during church on Sunday. It"s officially another casualty of the poor quality displays that were put in these keyboards. My local repair shop quoted me $585 US for parts and labor. Before I authorized that, I put a call in to Yamaha USA. Told them of my problem and I expected a fight. There was none. The gave me a case number and my repair facility was going to call them and take care of getting the replacement part sent. I will only have to pay for the labor charges.

The replacement display Yamaha is sending is not the same type that went out. They are also sending whatever other parts and supplies are needed to allow the new display to be installed in my keyboard and get it back up and running.

As I mentioned before, this is my 4th Yamaha keyboard. They were a PSR-8000, PSR-2000, PSR-2100 and now the PSR-S900. Yesterday I vowed to never buy another Yamaha. But my how things have changed in just a day. Thank you Yamaha for restoring my faith in a product I have a lot invested in.

I"m really sad to be posting here about the death of the LCD on my 3 year old PSR-S900. I have the keyboard set up at my church. I leave it there, so it"s not carted around like some portables.

Sunday, during the middle of our church service, my LCD went blank. At first I thought someone might have tripped over my power cord and unplugged it. But then I noticed all the other lights on the keyboard were still working. I touched a key -- sound came out. "Oh my," I thought to myself. This can"t be good.

So I took a quick break and headed into the church office where I Googled "PSR-S900 display." It didn"t take long to confirm my suspicion about it not being a good thing. I emailed Yamaha USA about my problem. They only suggested I take it in to an authorized service center. There was no mention about a problem with these displays. Their most hopefull advice: "After all, it could be a ribbon cable connection for all we know at this point."

Im Mokhtar from Malaysia I too have the LCD problem of my S900...I sent it for repair and Im lucky they informed me that they are calling in all the S900 with LCD problem and replace it for free...........good news

You need the actual internal screen to be working so you can easily see which button to push especially if you are performing live and you need to be quick when chaning the settings.

My 2 year 11 month old psr-s900 has gone dark. I could not use an external monitor as a work-around as the output is stuck on "new song". Have taken it back to Yamaha UK. Seems that they realise that they have an issue here. They have a different screen but this requires a replacement circuit board and also a software upgrade. Not exactly a diy job. My understanding is that they now accept that there is a manufacturing problem here - at least in the UK. Merchantable quality law covers one for up to 6 years here and so a good case could be made in the small claims court for compensation even if the "warranty" has expired. Good luck to you all.

DO NOT BUY YAMAHA PSR S900 MODEL... THOUSAND USERS AROUND THE WORLD COMPLAINS IT HAS LCD DEFECT! I just used my brand new psr s900 in two month and the Lcd went out. I LOSE MY TRUST ON YAMAHA PRODUCTS! THEY"RE USING LOW QUALITY MATERIALS!!! BUY (PSR S900) AND ULL SEE 95% THE LCD WILL LOSE. SEE LCD DEFECT FORUM, HUNDREDS COMPLAINS

DEAR YAMAHA, I AM VERY HAPPY HAVING MY PSR S900. I AM STILL PAYING IT ON INSTALLMENT BASIS, I AM VERY FRUSTRATED WHEN THE LCD SCREEN WENT OUT,JUST ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT IT. I CAN NO LONGER SEE THE CHARACTER. I AM SO VERY DISAPPOINTED.

I WENT TO CONSULT IT IN YAMAHA CENTER BUT THE REPAIR COST 15,000 PESOS OR ABOUT $300 DOLLARS. I HAVENT FULLY PAID THE UNIT YET. SO I DONT KNOW WHERE I GET FOR REPAIR. THEY TOLD ME THE UNIT HAS NO WARRANTY BECAUSE I DID NOT BUY FROM THEM, I BEG PLS HELP ME. I AM ONLY A LOCAL SINGER WITH LOW SALARY AT THE BAR. I HAVE FAMILY AD CHILDREN DEPENDING ON ME AND I ALSO DEPEND ONLY ON MY KEYBOAD. PLS HELP ME REPAIR THE LCD SCREEN OF MY S900. ( SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH) THANK U VERY MUCH AND MORE POWER! GODBLESS

Will give an update when I have one. When I get it back,my first purchase is going to be a portable video source- tv or dvd- to attach to the keyboard- perhaps to use immediately in lieu of the kb display- but at least to have it available should I need it in the future. I"ve looked already & getting one with a video input for small dollars is the tricky part. Few types available in my area.

If you still have enough light to view the bars under your display screen, the video attachment could be attached now to give you usage back of the keyboard. The 900 manual gives instructions for hooking one up. I couldn"t read any of the lettering on mine, so I didn"t try it.

I am shocked to see how many this is happening to. I think Yamaha should have a recall on these keyboards no matter a warranty or not. They are obviously containing defective displays. Parts and labor should be covered by Yamaha.

I too do have a problem with ma yamaha psr-s 550..it began displaying broken characters but now it displays nothing but purple colour..sure where can I get the replacement screen in Kenya?

I had similar problems with my PSR-S900 display. When I turned on the keybard the display would light briefy then go dark. I purchased a service manual from Yamaha for $16 to get scematics.

I have had my PSR-S900 for 2 years now- and it has inexplicably shut down in the left inch of the display. According to my research this is in fact a pixel-based shutdown, and not a connection failure. This seems to indicate that the LCD itself is of inferior composition as opposed to it being caused by simple interior-connection failure which generally results of poor overall workmanship, keyboardwise. Due to this, an entirely different display is required.

PL HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM OF MY DISPLAY. SUDDENLY AS I WAS PERFORMING A SHOW , AND I TRIED TO CHANGE THE VOICE FROM ONE INST TO ANOTHER, SOME VERTICAL LINES CAME ON THE SCREEN....WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR THIS PROBLEM....

i am kamau from Kenya, having the same problem with psr-s900 modelfor our church, half of the LCD shows just line no legible data, dont know what to do with the keyboard

I live in Chennai, India and my service technician who is the authorized service man for Yamaha told me that there is no replacement display for the 900 / S900 / PSR 3000 and a few other models. Extremely sad that the company sells these keyboards without replacement parts. Fortunately I sold my PSR3000 before the display went dead and opted for a old Yamaha 9000Pro which I managed to get on second hand sale. I now have a PSR8000 and the 9000Pro. These are built to last for years.

MY YAMAHA PSR S-900 LCD DISPLAY DIED A COUPLE OF DAYS BACK.FUNERAL WAS HELD YESTERDAY BECAUSE ITS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND YAMAHA IS DOING TOO MUCH BUSINESS SO THEY ARE"NT BOTHERED WHO BUYS WHAT AS LONG AS IT WORKS AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE.ITS THE DUTY OF THE COMPANY TO REPLACE KNOWING FULLY WELL BY NOW AND HAVING SEEN SO MANY SETS WITH THE SAME DEFECT.SO GOODBYE JUDAS PSR S-900.IS THERE ANYBODY INCLUSIVE OF THE MANUFATURERSWHO CAN RESURRECT MY KEYBOARD ?

You can also get and LCD display used in Car DVDs with a Video in Jack and use it through the Video out jack on the PSR... I have opted for this solution since I do not want my machine to undergo repairs, further, seeing the reviews, I learn that the display goes out again after three to six months so I guess this is the best alternative to live with.

Hi ... good news, contact local Yahama service ctr. they are now replacing the s900 display for free. you have to pay for labor that is Indian RS. 1200 + 10% service tax.

I know the frustration but changing the LCD display won"t solve the issue. It is a sub standard product, use a monitor or TV and connect it to the video out jack...

MY PSR 900 display died on me yesterday and while check for a solution to the issue I have come to learn that so many customers like me are facing the same issue.

hola el lcd de esos teclados yamaha Psr-s900 son una basura si hay repuestos en ee.uu o en el peru pero mas comodo diguenme porfavor mi correo es brigittechiclote@hotmail.com

I am using my PSR-S900 for about 2 years now and still not much problems with it. I"ve been using the CONTRAST option which you find in the UTILITY configuration 2. Set that to a much lower quantiy and place a small fan near the display. And for those who lost there LCD"s, use a television to display images and etc.

Ahoj všichni. Minulý týden v neděli, mi odešel display na PSR s900. Včera jsem ho měl spravený za 600,-Kč (34 dollarů nebo 24 euro). Opravdu to byl display. Zničehonic začal problikávat, v klávesách to prskalo, během odpoledně úplně zčernal a konec. Klávesy hrály v pořádku, bez problémů. Takže teď - po opravě - konečně mohu pokračovat v hraní. Ahoj Petr

Hello everyone. Last week on Sunday, I went on display PSR S900. Yesterday I had it mended for 600 CZK (34 dollars or 24 euros). Indeed it was a display. Suddenly he began to flash, the keys that sputtered during the afternoon and end all went black. Keys played fine, no problems. So now - after repairs - finally I can continue playing. Hi Peter

I am very happy with the products of Yamaha, but for now I PSRs900 (which I have 3 years) was that the display stop showing me. All other features on this musical instrument works without problems. Please help me, you made me very happy, and I stayed with this brand. Sincerely,..

Jsem velice spokojený s výrobky Yamaha, ale dnes se mi u PSRs900 (který mám 3 roky) stalo to, že mi přestal ukazovat display. Všechny ostatní funkce na tomto hudebním nástroji fungují bez problémů. Prosím pomozte mi, udělali byste mi obrovskou radost, a rád bych zůstal u této značky. S pozdravem

For customers in brazil or anyone who wants to get a cheap solution once the cost for repair this lcd screen is something high, I had done it inserting a small tv monitor with some parameters to fit the visor and it worked fine. If you want more details on how to do it, please contact me through my orkut profile, leaving a scrap. Use the search in orkut typing my name above. My city: Olinda.

I too have the same problem for the past many months. The right one-third display has funny lines. This problem is endemic to all the psr-s900s and they all seem to have this problem-- i know two other people personally--Shaam in Bangalore and Parminder Singh in Chandigarh-- who are suffering with their psr-s900"s display. The display supplier to Yamaha has done an extremely bad job by supplying substandard material. Yamaha"s behavior of not owning up is even worse. Most people who buy a tyros or s900 are professionals or ardent enthusiasts. Yamaha should unconditionally replace the display--whether they have supplied the piece legally thru dealers under warranty --or have allowed it to be smuggled into countries which impose unreasonably high import duty. I have been a great fan of Yamaha Corp and over the last 20 years have owned over a dozen of their keyboards. I still have a tyros 2, psr-3000, and s-900---but this is unacceptable and disgraceful of Yamaha. Thry better do something about this.

like all of you guys i have problems with my lcd screen. I don t know how many psr 900 has been sold world wide. But i suggest a petition against yamaha psr 900 keyboards. IF it would be a sony tv set or playstation yamaha would allready be in court.

If I read this post earlier, I would not have bought a Yamaha S900. unfortunately, I have and now my LCD screen isn"t working properly. If this product was made by a Nigerian, our license would have been withdrawn by the international community. I need a fix on my LCD screen. Meanwhile guys, try using an external DVD Player or TV monitor via AV for now. That works fine. Call me on +234-803-9468-290 (Steward, Nigeria).

I got my PSR S900 display bugged down as well after 2years from date of purchase. A part of the LCD display is not functioning properly and it"s quite a frustration and disappointment on my part to know that a very expensive product such as this one has a very low quality LCD that is used. I"ve taken good care of this. I always place this carefully in its bag each time I"m done using it and store it in a room that is within the required temperature. Help YAMAHA... hope you"ll call out to all of your PSR S900 customers and have this product recalled for LCD replacement.

I reported my problem to Yamaha Corporation of America who reported to YMIB Customer Suport in Spain, I don"t know if I can mention their names that"s why I didn"t, but soon I received an e-mail asking me the dealer where I bougth my PSR and my contact and the date of puchase. Immediatly I received his phone call to resolve the problem. I am very happy and my PSR is now been repaired. This is the way we hope Yamaha continue to proceed because the customers will stay with Yamaha. I can tell you all that I always trusted in Yamaha products, bougth a Yamaha Bass Guitar on 1965, yes 1965, and still working full of original components with a superb sound, that"s why I got the PSR630 on 1994 and on 2008 my PSR S900. Now I"m thinking about Tyros 3. Trust on Yamaha Products, I will. Thank You Yamaha. I will tell you as soon as I get my S900 repaired ...

Hi, I used PSR S900 keyboard for just 9 months then the bulb went off. how can I get another bulb? can somebody please assist!!! Email me on; rmutai79@yahoo.com Am in Kenya and there is nowhere in Kenya to replace.

I got my psr-s900 on 12Feb08 and never had any problem untill 3 days ago when working with registrations and suddenly 1/3 of it started to show complicated caracters...

Why does Yamaha not replace the displays as Toyota or Mercedes when they have problems with their cars? YAMAHA SHOULD DO SOMETHING AND I HOPE THEY WILL.

I"ve had two PSR-S900s screens fail on me. The first went after three months on the first instrument and the second failed after 5 months on the second instrument. I"m now waiting for a PSR-S910 and only hope that the new TFT screen is better than the problematic QVGA screen on the S900.

I am terribly angry. My Yamaha s900"s LCD screen went out the first time within six months of buying the keyboard. I had it repaired and now six months later the screen has gone out yet again!! Yamaha, I am losing trust in your product. What will you do to make this right?

I it most distressing to have a keyboard with a LCD that does not work. I bought about the PSR - S 900 a year ago. one day I saw the LCD screen going on and off intermittantly and eventually it just died out. I then checked the power supply unit and discovered taht it was not working, Now I"m not sure whether faulty power supply caused the problem or what? However I connected the keyboard the TV set ro serve as a monitor, However after the initila start up it shows a screen which looks like a veneered back ground with the words " New Song" Printed at the top.

PSRS500/S900 have common problem of half display as it is having very cheap material used in display unit, replacing display will solve your problem but no guarantee for display.
