To assemble this cohesive review covering the entire 2010 Mazda CX-7 line—including the new 2.5-liter models—TheCarConnection.com incorporated its firsthand driving impressions in a Bottom Line, then looked outward to other review sources to include a host of other perspectives and insights.

When the CX-7 was first introduced for 2007, it was one of the only small crossover utility vehicles with more rakish styling and an emphasis on sport-sedan-like road performance. Now for 2010 Mazda has expanded the CX-7 line to include a more economical base engine, spruced up the interior, and worked on making the cabin quieter.

The CX-7 retains its aggressive profile, including a 66-degree windshield incline that’s the steepest for any vehicle of its type. Mazda touches up the CX-7’s front and rear details for 2010—including a larger grille and Mazda logo—but the creased sheetmetal, bulging fenders and wheel wells, and low, sleek hoodline remain mostly unchanged. Inside, the CX-7’s interior continues the feel of part sport sedan, part utility vehicle. The instrument panel has a thin upper shelf that hosts audio and climate-control displays up in the driver’s line of vision. Next to it, there’s a new monochromatic trip computer or color nav screen. Hooded gauges and a new steering wheel design with controls for audio and Bluetooth calling functions complete the performance feel, while subtle new brightwork around the vents adds more visual panache.

The 2010 CX-7 lineup is now split into "i" and "s" models. The "i" models feature a new 161-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with a five-speed automatic transmission. Standard on "s" models is a 244-horsepower, turbocharged direct-injected 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. The "i" comes in front-wheel drive only, while the "s" models can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Overall, shoppers will find the 2.5 adequate for most needs, but for those who buy the 2010 Mazda CX-7 with its sporty image in mind, the turbo engine better fits the appearance. During normal driving, the 2.3-liter turbo engine accelerates the CX-7 almost effortlessly; downshifts aren"t always necessary as 90 percent of peak torque is achieved from 2,000 rpm all the way up to 5,000 rpm. However, the trade-off is a slightly coarser sound versus the 2.5. Both engines are reasonably fuel-efficient. The base engine returns 20 mpg city, 28 highway; the turbocharged engine has improved fuel economy for 2010—up to 18 mpg city, 25 highway—and it’s been retuned to accept regular gas.

Across the board, the CX-7 isn’t going to disappoint those who enjoy driving, and most will be surprised at how well such a tall vehicle can handle. The CX-7 is hard to fluster, even around tight corners, and although its steering feel isn’t quite as nicely weighted and direct as the Mazda5 (a minivan!), it’s a joy to hustle through the curves.

Limited legroom for backseat passengers and a rather small cargo area (compared to other utility vehicles) are the downsides of an otherwise pleasant and functional interior. Front seats are wide yet quite firm and supportive in the 2010 Mazda CX-7, and the driving position affords a good view ahead (although there’s a substantial blind spot and difficult rear vision when parking). There are several smaller cubbies, and center console compartments have been reconfigured to be more useful. The story is less delightful in back, where there’s barely enough width to fit three across; adults will find plenty of headroom, but the low position leaves knees elevated and a general shortage of legroom. Folding the backseats forward yields 70 inches of flat cargo floor; it’s not very tall, but enough to move a coffee table or love seat.

For 2010, all Mazda CX-7 models get improved sound insulation. New lower-door insulation is included throughout the CX-7 line, while models with the turbocharged engine have additional hood padding and strut-tower insulation to help keep both engine and road noise under wraps. We used to call the CX-7 one of the noisiest vehicles in its class; it’s still not the quietest, but this aspect is no longer a deal-breaker. The CX-7 feels well put-together, and Mazda upgrades seat materials for 2010 and moves to a different plastic for the instrument panel and door panels that’s less likely to attract dust.

Safety features on the 2010 Mazda CX-7 include standard electronic stability control on all models, plus anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, and side-curtain bags covering both rows. The underlying structure is carried over, and the 2009 CX-7 gets top five-star ratings in federal NCAP tests along with mostly "good" results from the IIHS, except for a "marginal" rating in the rear-impact category. TheCarConnection.com plans to update you on ratings for 2010.

The lower-priced 2010 Mazda CX-7 models don"t look much different from the turbocharged ones; the base SV and Sport get 17-inch alloy wheels instead of 18- and 19-inch designs, and turbocharged Touring and Grand Touring models pick up other detail extras like turn-signal-integrated mirrors and chrome-finish door handles. Inside, Touring models add leather upholstery, which isn’t available in "i" models. Top Grand Touring trims include automatic climate control, a SmartKey entry system, a moonroof, heated mirrors, the nav system, rain-sensing wipers, and xenon HID headlamps. All models but the base SV come with a Bluetooth hands-free interface—Bluetooth streaming audio is also offered—and for the first time, the top-of-the-line Grand Touring picks up a Blind Spot Monitoring System. Bose Centerpoint audio is optional.

The totally redeveloped cabin of the second-generation Mazda CX-5 represented a significant step forward for Mazda’s popular SUV. Conceived within the same ‘Refined Toughness’ mandate as the exterior styling, the CX-5 competes with the very best cars in the class by delivering a premium feel throughout. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 builds on this with new trim levels that add unique interior details to match their distinctive exteriors.

With a cabin to match its new high class single-tone exterior, the range-topping GT Sport takes Mazda’s SUV to new levels of premium ambiance. Real wood and satin chrome on the dashboard and door trim inlays are matched to brown Nappa leather and black roof lining to deliver the most luxurious Mazda SUV cabin yet, while white LED interior illumination and a frameless rear view mirror are further examples of high end features in the cabin. Also unique to GT Sport is an exclusive steering wheel design with a chrome centre bezel and high-grade stitching. The popular Sport trim features black leather seats with brown stitching as standard with the option of stone leather on 165ps petrol versions, while the entry-level SE-L features premium black cloth upholstery.

While the 2022 Mazda CX-5 sees the introduction of subtle interior design differences across the new trim grades, just as before, the CX-5 offers a perfect blend of comfort, quality, design and functionality across all models in the range. Mazda has carefully considered the form of every component to create an elegant and beautifully built interior that combines an engaging and stress-free driving environment with comfortable, stylish and practical accommodation for all occupants.

As in all of the latest generation of Mazda cars, the cabin architecture has been designed to create an intelligently configured cockpit layout for the driver, with all major controls and instrumentation laid out ergonomically around the focal point of the steering wheel. Clean-cut simplicity and elegant design abounds throughout the cabin, the easy-to-read three-dial driver’s instrument binnacle and 10.25-inch display screen atop the dashboard are examples of the classy yet uncomplicated feel.

Across all models the Mazda CX-5 features a top-class leather wheel that has a tactile feel, a stylish shape and a small centre pad. Additionally, Sport, Sport Black and GT Sport models are equipped with a heated wheel rim, which automatically turns off after 30 minutes. Sport, Sport Black and GT Sport CX-5s also come with Mazda’s Active Driving Display - head-up display. It includes Traffic Sign Recognition and projects full-colour information directly onto the windscreen within the driver’s line of sight. The displayed information is divided into upper and lower zones: driving information, including navigation turn-by-turn direction and speed limit information is displayed in the upper section, while vehicle status, including current speed and advanced safety equipment status, is displayed in the lower section. They also have a 7-inch colour TFT driving dial set, while convenience is further enhanced by an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory function.

As you’d expect from Mazda, the CX-5 delivers a superb driving position, the raised position of the floor console brings the gear lever higher, placing it closer to the steering wheel. On top of this, the centre and door armrests are set at near identical heights to provide the driver with a balanced and comfortable body alignment. While for added convenience, the Sport, Sport Black and GT Sport’s standard eight-way power seats have a two-preset memory and allow for the automatic setting of the angle of the Active Driving Display -Mazda’s head-up display.

Mazda’s human-centred design philosophy doesn’t just focus on the driver, the convenient 40:20:40 split/folding rear seats have also been designed with maximum comfort in mind. The basic seatback setting of the torso angle is set at 24 degrees, offering a comfortable seating posture. In addition, the CX-5 is the first Mazda to offer a two-step reclining mechanism, allowing the rear seatback to be leaned back to an angle of 28 degrees. While the comfort of rear occupants is further considered air-conditioning vents to the rear of the central console.

Inside, the storage box beneath the centre arm rest has a large capacity and is fitted with a groove to accommodate the power cord of devices attached to the USB port, power outlet and twin AUX mini-jack connection hub located within it. The glove box is shaped to accommodate a 10-inch tablet, and has been flock-lined for greater convenience and quality. Both the front and rear door pockets have their bases lined with a non-slip finish.

Excellent connectivity is another key element of the 2022 CX-5. All models feature the intuitive Mazda Connect infotainment system, which features navigation, integrated Bluetooth, Apple Carplay, Android Auto and four USB connections. Additionally, via the latest MyMazda App, numerous convenience and peace of mind functions are available, including vehicle Finder, remote door locking and navigation destination search and send to vehicle and vehicle health report. The app also shows the vehicle"s service history, and when the next service is due. To use the MyMazda App, CX-5 customers simply register and add their car to the app to enroll with Connected Services.

As other car makers grapple with supply chain issues that are pushing vehicle deliveries out by as much as 12 months, Japanese car maker Mazda finds itself in the happy position of having plenty of stock, short lead times and a freshly updated version of its popular CX-5 mid-sized SUV to take to market.

The facelifted CX-5 was launched to the media in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, with Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi telling journalists the model remained one of Mazda’s most globally significant, accounting for more than over 3.5 million sales over the past decade.

Fully 230,000 of these sales have been in Australia, where Mazda enjoys market share above its global average and where the CX-5 was the number one selling SUV for seven consecutive years between 2013 and 2019.

This year, the vehicle that first brought Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language celebrates its 10th anniversary and to mark the occasion Mazda has endowed it with fresh looks, new features and more distinctive model grades.

The SUV segment shows no sign of slowing, according to Mr Bhindi, a fact that has prompted Mazda to push forward with the launch of a new mid-sized model later this year, designed to be complimentary to the CX-5.

The new Mazda CX-60 will boast similar proportions to the CX-5 but with an inline six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive layout, promises to be a more sporting and luxurious product.

Mazda executives are quick to dismiss suggestions the CX-60 will cannibalise sales of up-spec variants of the CX-5, pointing to the success of the complementary CX-3 and CX-30 and the brand’s eight-seat CX-8 and CX-9 models as examples of how adding additional models in the same category can grow overall market share.

But right now, the CX-5 is the brand’s singular torch bearer in the medium-SUV category, this new version “stripping away the clutter and smoothing the surfaces”, in Mazda’s own words, to create a refreshed exterior look, with a bolder face that incorporates new headlights and grille.

Polished design remains a key part of Mazda’s appeal and this latest iteration of the CX-5 introduces a subtle but effective massaging of the proven formula.

Mazda describes the design changes as creating a more unified look, while at the same time more clearly distinguishing between the individual model grades, of which there are 12.

There’s also a new Active Driving Display, a 7-inch TFT display in the gauge cluster, a new Sport and Off-Road Mode Mi-Drive switch on petrol AWD models, a configurable rear cargo area that enables the setting of a flat cargo floor and full LED headlamps and taillamps.

Entry-level models are powered by a direct-injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol (115kW/200Nm), stepping up to a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol (140kW/252Nm), a turbocharged petrol 2.5-litre four-cylinder (170kW/420Nm) and finally a 2.2-litre intercooled turbo diesel (140kW/450NM).

In addition to the design changes already mentioned, the CX-5 Akera is further differentiated from its stablemates by way of smart-looking body colour painted wheel arch and lower body cladding, larger diameter twin exhaust tail pipes and upgraded Adaptive LED Headlamps, plus unique 19-inch alloy wheels finished in bright silver.

This well-appointed model now boasts wireless smartphone charging, a hands-free power tailgate and reversible floorboard setup in the cargo area. That’s in addition to what was an already generous level of standard equipment, including soft Nappa leather trim, ventilated front seats, heated outer seats in the second row, heated leather steering wheel, real wood door and dashboard trim inserts, frameless rear-view mirror and 7-inch TFT LCD multi-information meter display.

Mazda claims to have made numerous improvements to enhance handling, comfort, steering and dynamics, as well as further reducing NVH, but to be frank it’s been a long time between test drives of the CX-5, so we’re not able to comment on the efficacy of these changes.

The six-speed automatic is responsive, refined and goes about its business without fuss, its shift aggressiveness able to be sharpened by selecting Sport mode via the Mi-Drive (Mazda Intelligent DriveSelect) system which also offers Normal, Off-Road, and Towing modes.

Another area where the Mazda trails its Korean rival is in interior presentation and technology, with the CX-5 still using a conventional-looking instrument binnacle with analogue-style speedo and tacho.

There is a small 7-inch TFT display within the gauge cluster, but it stops short of the full digital dash setup found in the rival Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.

The addition of premium Nappa leather interior trim may assuage some concerns on this front with Mazda’s design, finish and materials quality as good or better than any of its rivals and the Akera further differentiated with standard features like a Premium Bose audio system with 249-watt amplifier and 10-speakers (including subwoofer).

While the CX-5 is clearly not designed to carve corners like an MX-5 sports car, the Mazda SUV boasts above average-dynamics that enable it to be driven enthusiastically when required.

Riding as it does on larger 19-inch wheels with lower-profile tyres, the Akera Turbo steers with pleasing accuracy, going faithfully where its pointed without excessive body roll, understeer or other undesirable handling traits.

The changes represent incremental but meaningful improvements to a winning formula and for those buyers wanting something even fresher and more exciting, the new Mazda CX-60 awaits in the wings.

IT MAY BE JUST US, BUT we’re not convinced by the new Mazda MX-30 styling. However, as we always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so sales results will be the final arbiter.

Featuring the latest interpretation of Kodo Design and highly-advanced M Hybrid or full Electric drivetrains, the new Mazda MX-30 combines everyday functionality with a positive driving experience.

“Since we unveiled the first ever Mazda MX-30 to Australia in December 2020, we have received highly positive feedback for its design and environmental attributes,” said Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi. (Well, maybe we’re just out of step.)

The first ever Mazda MX-30 M Hybrid range combines a 114kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Mazda’s own M Hybrid system. This system sends drive to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Once we have tested and assessed the newMazda MX-30,seniordriverauswill bring you a comprehensive review, including everything the over-50 driver needs to know.
