Make sure the GoPro is charged. Charge the GoPro by using provided USB connector and plugging it into a computer. You can also use the GoPro wall or automobile charger.

If the GoPro still does not charge, please use the microSD/Micro USB Port Assembly Replacement guide to replace your assembly. A poor connection inside the Micro USB port may prevent your GoPro from charging.

Older computers do not have the hardware to support HD playback. Ensure your computer can play the video by checking if it meets the GoPro Studio Software minimum requirements here.

You can have choppy video playback if you play the video streamed from the camera over USB. What this means is if you have the camera connected to a computer by the USB cable and you play the video from the files on the camera, without transferring the file to your computer, it can come out choppy. This is due to the USB connection not being fast enough to play the HD video back in real time. Before playing back a HD video, copy or transfer the file from your GoPro to your computer, then playback the video.

I have the exact same problem. Bought my GoPro 2 weeks ago, used it for 2 weeks... downloaded / updated the firmware this morning using the iPhone app... restarted and now the back / LCD screen doesn"t turn on at all. I chatted with support for 2 hours and they had me manually install the update which I downloaded here:

and then installed by coping the resulting "UPDATE" folder to my SD card, which after a couple tries did take but didn"t fix the problem. I"m left with a 2 week old GoPro that has a non-functioning LCD screen.

I"d put money on the firmware update being the issue as 1) that"s the only thing that"s changed for me since this morning and b) the problem is that the touchscreen isn"t displaying anything at all.

Yup, this is my Monday and I"m hoping the week get"s better. Aye, perfectly understandable that you don"t know my name or associate it with my knickname (or at least the knickname I can use in public, the other ones that people call me.....probably can"t be written down). I do understand that you guys are trying hard to fix things and yes, you"re working outside your area too so indeed, thank you for that, it is very much appreciated. I think people just need more feedback from GoPro and it would do a lot to ease their worries or concerns, as I"m sure you know, some threads have gotten extremely long and it"s simply because people have no idea if their issues are being addressed or not (again, not your area, but whom do I pass this back to and do I know they would actually consider what I"m saying?).

Update your camera via GoPro Quik or by manual update. HERO11 Black has a known issue where it"s not recognized via USB connection after doing the initial camera firmware update. This means when you plug the camera into a computer to use the camera as a webcam, the camera will not show that it"s connected. We will have a firmware fix to resolve this issue in the next several weeks. In the meantime, a workaround is to perform a Connections reset. You can then use your camera as a webcam.

1. Click on the GoPro icon in the status bar and select [Show Preview]. This gives you the ability to understand your Wide field of view prior to going live.

1. Open your webcam application and select GoPro Camera as your preferred camera (see below for supported programs). If the app is already open, you might need to quit and restart that application for the GoPro Camera option to be visible.

Our comprehensive GoPro HERO 9 review, complete with all the new features, comparisons with old cameras, and an honest opinion on whether you should upgrade or not.

After years of being the world’s number one action sports camera, GoPro managed to deliver another stellar product in 2020 as an upgrade to the wildly popular 8 series.

From travel to snowboarding, scuba diving to mountain biking and just about everything in between, we’ve put our GoPros through some tortuous environments.

SPECIAL DEAL: GoPro are having an incredible sale right now! If you purchase the latest camera using our link below, you’ll save $150 plus they’ll throw in a dual battery charger and a spare battery completely free! The deal is on for this week only though, so don’t miss out.

According to us, this is one of the biggest ‘game-changing’ upgrades this year. We’ve tested out the sensor alongside our high-end professional cameras, and are amazed at the photo quality the GoPro HERO9 produces.

The main difference is that now the GoPro HERO 9 Black has horizon levelling built directly into the camera, which automatically adjusts the crop to ensure your horizon is as close to level as possible.

Previously you would have to do this through the GoPro app or in post-production. So this feature saves you time in the future when editing your videos.

First introduced in the HERO7, TimeWarp got an upgrade on the HERO8 to allow the user to tap on the screen to toggle between quick-time and real-time.

TimeWarp 3.0 goes two steps further, and now with a simple tap of the larger rear screen you can not only set the hyperlapse to real-time, you can then drop it to slo-mo!

The most obvious upgrade straight out of the box, and something we can’t fail to mention in this GoPro HERO 9 Black review, is the inclusion of the colour front display LCD screen.

That’s not a problem anymore though, because with the GoPro HERO 9 Black, you can now set the exact time you want to start recording at, put your camera in place then walk away.

Perhaps one of the best things about GoPros isn’t necessarily the action cameras themselves, but all the incredible accessories you can get along with them!

The GoPro Media Mod is a housing that your HERO9 slides into that features a bi-directional microphone, cold shoe mounts, USB-C input/output and a 3.5mm microphone jack.

The latest and greatest modular accessory is the Max Lens Mod. Leaning on the ultra-wide capabilities of its bigger 360-degree sibling, the Max Lens Mod replaces the original lens cover on the GoPro Hero 9 Black to give it a super-wide perspective with excellent field of view.

In fact if we’re going out with friends or heading out on any adventure, we’ll have the GoPro HERO 9 Black in our bag and leave the big cameras at home.

And the last thing that we’re not completely happy about with the GoPro HERO 9 Black is that it isn’t compatible with older GoPro HERO batteries or the HERO 8 Black media mod.

Now that we’ve run through all the major new features in this GoPro HERO 9 Black review, you’re probably wondering what sets this action camera apart from its predecessors.

If you don’t currently own a GoPro, and are looking for a camera that you can use in a range of environments, then the HERO9 is absolutely worth buying.

Whether you want a durable, waterproof camera, something for vlogging or just an all-round travel camera, the GoPro HERO 9 Black is one of the best action cameras on the market.

While, in our opinion, the HERO7 to HERO8 was a minor upgrade, the HERO8 to HERO9 is a fairly major one with the inclusion of the front-facing screen, 5k, new camera sensor, etc.

On the other hand, if you’re the kind of person who would use their smartphone 90% of the time and only pick up the GoPro now and then, we’d say save your money and perhaps buy a couple of awesome accessories instead.

Wait what? When is the GoPro HERO 10 being released? If historical dates are any indication, you can expect to see the GoPro HERO10 in September 2021. HOWEVER with the current chip manufacturing shortage in Taiwan and the fact that zero rumours have come out about any new camera, there’s a high likelihood that there isn’t going to be a release this year. If you need a camera now, don’t wait. Just get this current model.

We"ve put the new camera to the test in this comprehensive GoPro HERO 9 review. Dive into the new features, how it performs and whether it"s worth upgrading.

Summary: Is your GoPro troubling you? This post shares solutions to the 13 most common GoPro camera errors and video problems. The fixes are for all models of GoPro cameras — HERO 5, HERO 6, HERO 7 Black, HERO 7 White, HERO 7 Silver, HERO 8, Fusion, Max, and others. It also suggests the best GoPro SD card recovery and repair software for the camera"s deleted, lost or corrupt videos.

You love your GoPro camera for many reasons. First, it offers ample opportunity to shoot unique videos of premium quality. It is waterproof without casing up to 131 feet (40 m), eliminates lens fog, is super tough, shock-proof, has excellent stills, and can capture 4K 360-degree videos. But with this and much more to vouch for, your GoPro camera errors are technical hitches.

There have been complaints about GoPro video footage not playing after import to the computer, camera freezing, SD card errors, quick battery drainage, and more.

The solutions shared here are applicable for all GoPro models, including HERO5, HERO 6, HERO 7 Black, HERO 7 White, HERO 7 Silver, HERO 8, Fusion, Max, and others.

The ‘SD ERR’ or ‘NO SD’ message on your GoPro LCD screen indicates that your camera cannot properly connect with the SD card. If you view this error, ensure that the SD card is fully inserted into the camera.

Although formatting will delete all SD card videos and pictures, it will fix the issues causing the GoPro SD card error. While if you have missed taking a backup of the GoPro SD card, you can use Stellar Photo Recovery software that works on formatted memory cards and recovers photo and video files without affecting their original quality.

If your camera SD card has free space but still shows the error ‘SD card is full’ when you try to record videos, try formatting the SD card in your computer. Also, make sure your GoPro has the latest firmware by regularly updating your camera.

GoPro camera SD card may suddenly stop working if it is very old or continuously being used on multiple devices. Because of this, the SD card turns corrupt or inaccessible. However, you can attempt formatting to fix the issue or switch to a new SD card.

This problem may also occur using a lower Class SD card to store high-quality GoPro videos. Always use Class 10 high-capacity SD cards to record GoPro videos. Opt for GoPro recommended SD cards for your specific camera model is advisable.

Dust could be another reason for the SD card to stop working suddenly. Clean the memory card with a soft cloth and then try to access it in the GoPro camera again.

If you cannot access such corrupt SD card multimedia files, get an effective GoPro SD card recovery software such as Stellar Photo Recovery Premium that can restore video and photo files from corrupt SD cards.

Video playback issue is a common complaint among GoPro users. Sometimes, GoPro videos don’t play properly, freeze, or show a black screen. They are jerky or have choppy playback. There are also cases when the videos have no audio.

Most of the time, the issue is related to incompatible system support. For example, your media player or computer may not support GoPro videos recorded using high-quality HEVC settings. The other reason could be the corruption in the GoPro video.

You can do the following to fix GoPro videos playing choppy or jerky, etc.: Try to play GoPro videos in VLC Media Player. Unfortunately, Windows Media Player doesn’t play 1080p or above-resolution videos.

If the above techniques don’t fix the GoPro video playback problem, the video file is corrupt, and you need Stellar Repair for Video software to fix the playback issue.

Video loss from GoPro SD cards can be due to many reasons like accidental deletion, virus infection, interruption in file transfer, improper SD card handling while inserting or removing cards from the device, and more. In any such scenario, to recover deleted GoPro videos and photos, use a media recovery software – Stellar Photo Recovery. It scans the memory card for lost and deleted video/ photo files and restores them with their original name, date, and timestamp. Ensure you do not use the SD card after file loss, as it will overwrite the data.

If your GoPro videos are not opening and showing errors such as ‘Can’t play video,’ ‘File not found,’ error code 0xc00d36c4, etc., your file is corrupt. It can be due to obsolete video drivers on your PC, malware, improper file transfer, etc. You can repair any corrupt MP4 or MOV video file from GoPro HERO5, HERO6, Fusion, or other models using Stellar Repair for video software on your Mac or Windows PC. You may also once try to fix the GoPro video error with VLC Media Player as the player also has a video repair feature that sets minor corruption issues.

GoPro can withstand extreme temperatures. But some HERO 6 and HERO 7 users complained about the camera freezing when the device is underwater or at a high altitude. The problem is temporarily resolved by removing and reinserting the battery.

If you are facing such a problem, update the GoPro camera software. If your camera is in a frozen state at present, try to reset it by holding the ‘Mode’ button for 10 seconds. Next, hold the top ‘Shutter’ button. Then, on the HERO Session/ HERO4 Session camera. Before doing this, turn off WiFi and GPS, and remove any battery BacPac and all other connections.

HERO3 cameras usually run into this problem. You can do the following to fix the problem for any GoPro camera. First, remove and reinsert the GoPro battery. Next, press the Power button to power on the camera. The update should now be completed. If this doesn’t help, update the camera manually.

If the export fails every time at the same point, the section of that video file may be corrupt. You can trim that section from the video to fix the issue or use video repair software to repair the corrupt GoPro video.

You want to edit your video footage in GoPro Studio on your computer. But the videos won’t import into the GoPro Studio interface. You may see an error message like ‘Unable to play the file. The filemay be corrupted or in an unsupported format’or nothing happens as you select and import the video file.

Suppose you see the error ‘Unable to play the file. File may be corrupted or in an unsupported format,’ then update your Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA graphics card. Also, make sure it is compatible with GoPro Studio.

Import the file into the correct ‘Step’ in GoPro Studio. For example, MP4 files of GoPro cameras are imported in Step 1: View & Trim, whereas files converted into GoPro Cineform AVI or MOV format are imported into Step 2: Edit.

If you still face issues, check if the videos are playing in VLC Player or QuickTime to rule out any corruption issues. To repair corrupt or damaged GoPro MP4 or MOV videos, use video repair software.

It happens because you may not have adequately updated your GoPro software to function with the Battery BacPac. Update your camera software again to fix the audio problem in HERO.

Video files imported into the computer using GoPro Quik app for Windows Desktop sometimes don’t play. It may be because your MP4 video files are large, so that they couldn’t be completely transferred, or there was an abrupt interruption during file transfer due to which the videos got damaged. Use a GoPro video repair tool, and see if you can fix such corrupt MP4 video files on the computer.

Are you facing a ‘quick battery drain’ problem in your GoPro camera? It could be because of too many features on your camera at a time, like voice control, WiFi, GPS, etc. So turn off all the parts if not in use.

The very low temperature in a cold environment can also drain the battery faster, for instance, when the camera is underwater or during snowfall. So keep the camera in a warm place. Also, if your GoPro camera battery is very old, it will drain faster. So replace it with a new one.

The high-end GoPro cameras are not free from technical hiccups. To avoid GoPro camera errors and video playback issues, it is essential to keep your camera software updated and use the SD card recommended by the manufacturer for various camera models.

You can use the professional Stellar video recovery software to recover and repair corrupt videos in uncalled situations related to GoPro video loss or corruption.

Exactly one year ago today GoPro announced the Display Mod, as part of the larger Hero 8 suite. At the time, a year before the Hero 9 would come out, it promised a way to see yourself from the front of the camera, aimed somewhat at vloggers, but realistically anyone that just wanted to frame the subject from in front of the camera (which I think is way more people than just vloggers). Undoubtedly it was a response to the DJI OSMO Action with its dual front and rear color screens.

Unfortunately, with delay after delay after delay, it wouldn’t finally see the light until just a week or two ago. By then, the GoPro Hero 9 had launched, which featured a similar front-facing screen as the DJI OSMO Action, negating the value for most people. Still, plenty of people have the Hero 8 cameras, and the Display Mod also offers a larger screen than the Hero 9’s front facing display. So perhaps there was still some value there – it was time to find out!

To begin, the Display Mod comes with both a USB-C charging cable (just like a normal GoPro would), as well as a small case for it, keeping it safe for when it’s not on your camera:

The GoPro Display Mod requires the GoPro Media Mod. In the case of the Hero 8, that’s the Hero 8 Media Mod, and in the case of the Hero 9, that’s the Hero 9 Media Mod. These are different models and aren’t cross-compatible because the GoPro Hero 8 and Hero 9 are different sizes, thus their shells are different sizes:

But, the good news is that as long as you have the appropriate Media Mod for the right camera, then you can use the same Display Mod with either. Also, for fun, I tried using the Media Mod with the GoPro Hero 7 (which has an HDMI port on it), and while it would illuminate, it would only show a gallery view of existing content on the card (like plugging into a TV), except half the navigation icons are cut-off, so you’re basically navigating blindly with the Hero 7 Mode & Power Buttons, hoping you don’t delete anything in the process.

Now, you’ll twist up the Display Mod, which has the screen on the front-facing side. This hinge seems well built in terms of up/down movement, but wouldn’t do well with a strong shear (lateral) or twisting force on it. Long term I think disconnecting and re-connecting the wire is probably what will break first.

Next, go ahead and hold down the left button, this turns it on. If you have the screen on, but not yet the GoPro, you’ll see this (which assumes you haven’t connected the cable). You’ll also see the battery state in the corner (of the display mod). Once you turn on your GoPro, you’ll see yourself on the Display Mod, and the GoPro Hero 8 or 9 back screen will turn off:

On the front Display Mod screen you’ll only ever see the exact same thing: Yourself and the Display Mod battery. Meanwhile, on the front GoPro status screen you’ll see the recording time details more or less like normal. You’ll see the mode you’re in, recording time, battery life of the GoPro, etc…

At first you’re like – OK, no biggie, right? Except…biggie. See, you can’t adjust any settings now unless you literally turn off the Display Mod (which means it’s now sitting there flipped up and off – cause if it’s flipped down, it blocks your rear touchscreen):

See, the Display Mod isn’t a touchscreen, and it *NEVER* shows display settings, or allows you to adjust settings. It just shows yourself. That’s it. Again, it only shows yourself. Take for example this super cool new audio feature on the Hero 9 Media Mod (green lines at the bottom) – this is when the Display Mod is turned off:

That’d be brilliant on the Display Mod, and arguably, there’s no better place for that than facing yourself – since that’s kinda sorta when you want to know whether the audio is working (perhaps wireless mics you’ve got plugged in like I do). Except nope.

Or, perhaps you want to adjust from Wide to the new GoPro Hero 9 Linear Horizon Leveling mode. Nope, you can’t do that either without shutting off the Display Mod, waiting for it to slowly disconnect itself, and then illuminate the other screen. And then of course once that’s done, you’ll turn back your Display Mod on.

So when you’re not having the Display Mod in use, then you can flip down the screen like this (shown partially, it goes all the way down as shown above elsewhere):

And that’s fine, you can still see the GoPro screen. Except it doesn’t go to sleep like the normal screen does. So it’ll just burn battery forever. Also, again, you can’t adjust any settings, or even see the recording times from the back – because that’s only on the status.  Mind, you, all this is the same on the Hero 8 or Hero 9.

Further, it ignores the GoPro display timeout settings as well. It’ll just stay on forever, until the GoPro turns off physically, in which case two minutes later the Display Mod turns off too. But this doesn’t match the normal settings where the displays go to sleep (timeout) earlier to prevent battery drain.

As in, there’s nothing else to talk about. That’s the sum total of the GoPro Display Mod’s capabilities. It’s basically a simple non-touchscreen display that you clip on the top and it reduces the functionality of your GoPro, by only very slightly increasing one aspect (seeing yourself on the front if on the Hero 8, or slightly bigger on the Hero 9). But that’s a massive tradeoff for the functions.

Not exactly. It sounds like it’s light rain resistant, but definitely not dunk proof. Its got open ports (the USB-C port on the side for example), and openly plugs into other open ports (the micro-HDMI port on the Media Mod).

The screen measures 2” diagonal and has a resolution of 480×320, the exact same as the GoPro Hero 8 rear screen (but smaller than the Hero 9 rear screen).

No, it has its own battery that you must charge separately. Meaning, you’ll need to plug in two cables (one to your GoPro to charge that battery, and one to your Display Mod to charge that battery). The Media Mod doesn’t have an internal battery, so no need for a third cable there.

No, according to GoPro “Current hardware limitations prevent output to the Display Mod and enabling the full functionality of the Hero 9 Black back touchscreen at the same time”. Which, is exactly what I’ve seen. It will show status on the Hero 9 front display screen, just like the Hero 8 front display screen.

When GoPro announced the Display Mod, it was clearly in response to DJI. Some day we’ll find out for real whether this was in the hopper before DJI announced their OSMO Action 5 months earlier. My guess is it might have been on a napkin somewhere, but that’s about it. When GoPro held various media events leading up to the Hero 8 launch last September, the Display Mod was nowhere to be found, save under a glass case…untouchable. Yet, it was still slated to be released by December 2019 (something I was skeptical on at the time).

I’ve bought literally almost every product GoPro has made. Every action cam, almost every mount, and even that drone. Yes, the remotes and accessory cables too. And ultimately, I think this is the most disappointing thing GoPro has made.  It’s as if the concept never really left the napkin stage and went through a proper productization. It’s as if someone shipped the napkin off to a manufacturer in Asia, and they shipped back this hardware with a coffee-stained half-ripped sticky note that says “KThxBye!”.

For Hero 8 users this would have helped bridge the gap, and sure, if you’ve already got the Hero 8 + Hero 8 Media Mod, and don’t care about changing settings or often changing the direction of your camera to point at something else, then maybe this is a good intermediate option for ya. But if you’ve got a Hero 8 with no Media Mod, you’re basically looking at $160 for both the Media Mod + Display Mod, which is about half-way to the cost of a Hero 9 assuming you’ve got GoPro Plus.

Even in the case of the Hero 9, there’s so much real potential for the Display Mod for its intended target audience – vloggers. Why couldn’t GoPro have put the audio levels on the screen? Why not an exposure graph? Why not additional ProTune metrics on the screen like ISO or shutter speed? Why not the ability to change zoom levels like the Hero 9 screen? Why not a 16:9 overlay when recording 4:3 content? Why not even GoPro GPS-based metrics that are available through the app, like speed? Why not dual-screen support like their actual product page originally showed? Why doesn’t it auto shut–off the screen per the GoPro screen savings settings? Why can’t I change settings when the Display Mod is enabled?

GoPros with their compact design and wide angle lenses, have the potential to make handy webcams for Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Skype. But only the latest models actually have a dedicated webcam mode. Before this feature was released a few months ago, I wrote an article with an accompanying video about a free way to use your GoPro as a wireless webcam – but it only worked with more recent models.

In this article and accompanying video I’ll demonstrate three methods that between them let you use almost any GoPro as a webcam, even models released over 6 years ago.

If you have a Hero 7 Black or newer you don’t have to spend any money to get this working. If you have an older model you’ll need a USB video capture card but the good news is these have come down in price – I’ll be using one I got for less than $10 and comparing it against one from Elgato costing almost 20 times the price!

It is worth nothing although the wide angle lens of a GoPro can be useful, it doesn’t provide a very flattering image, especially when you’re close up.

If your camera has an HDMI output you can use a video capture card and an HDMI cable. This usually provides the best quality and should provide synced audio too. You can use this option with the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and Black, Hero 5 Black, Hero 6 Black, Hero 2018 model and the Hero 7 Black. You can also use it with the Hero 8 and Hero 9 and I imagine any newer cameras with the optional GoPro Media Mod kit. It should also work with older models that have an HDMI output as well but I’ve not tested just how well it works since I don’t have anything older than my Hero 5 Black to hand.

If you have a Hero 7 Black or newer you can use the Live Streaming mode and some free software to turn the camera into a wireless webcam as I covered in detail a few months ago. I won’t go into so much detail – but I will show it working with a Mac this time since I only showed it with a PC previously.

It’s the most complicated option but it doesn’t cost anything and is the only option where you can use the camera wirelessly, and it captures audio too. Apart from being a little more difficult to set up, it also introduces significant delay so it’s not ideal for video calls but it’s still an interesting option.

If you have a GoPro Hero 8, Hero 9 or any newer camera I’d imagine, GoPro has finally introduced a native webcam mode that works with the supplied USB cable. Unfortunately it needs dedicated software that you’ll have to download and it doesn’t currently support audio, but it is available on both PCs and Macs.

You could just mount the GoPro on one of the included mounting buckles and tilt it back but it’s not the most flattering angle. Or you could use a convenient shelf or even a pile of books for a better angle.

Any GoPro tripod would also do the job. The GoPro 3-Way is probably the best option albeit a little precarious. Or the GoPro Shorty provides a little extra height over the basic GoPro tripod.

There’s also the GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip which could be perfect, but it has a rather too much clamping force for your average monitor or laptop screen and may cause damage.

I’ve tried a few other GoPro mounts too and I’ve also tried attaching it to my Manfrotto Magic Arm and Elgato Multi-mount that I use for my mirrorless camera. Both options are overkill but work fine.

First you’ll need to make sure you have the latest firmware on your camera. Connect to the GoPro app on your phone to check – you’ll be prompted if an update is available. The webcam feature is not compatible with the GoPro Labs firmware, which is a shame since that has some great features.

Make sure your camera is in GoPro Connect mode under Preferences | Connections. You can change this back to MTP if you want to transfer media from your GoPro.

On a Mac, download and install the GoPro Webcam desktop utility. The software is still in Beta on a PC at the time of filming and bizarrely you have to join a GoPro Facebook group to download it. I’ll provide links to both downloads in the description.

On a PC make sure the GoPro Webcam app is running and plug in your camera, ideally into a USB 3 port which is usually blue. You might need a USB extension cable – if so try and use a USB 3 extension cable, like this cheap AmazonBasics one I’m using here.

The GoPro Webcam icon in your taskbar should now have a blue dot to show the camera is connected. Right click on the icon and select Show Preview. The dot turns red to confirm the camera is active. If you close the preview it’ll go back to blue.

You can change the field of view using the digital lens option. Linear removes the standard GoPro fisheye look and Narrow crops or effectively zooms in, which is useful for video calls, especially if you have a lot of clutter in the background.

On a Mac the GoPro Webcam icon is in the Status Menu bar at the top right and works in the same way. The Mac version also lets you mirror the camera if you click the Flip or Mirror button depending on which mode you’re on. And under Preferences you can choose 720p as well as the default 1080p which will prompt you to relaunch the app.

On my 2012 Macbook Pro I only got a framerate of 30 fps – you might get more on a newer Mac. The quality is ok with plenty of light but gets worse quickly as light levels dip. These GoPros still have small image sensors and consequently fairly poor low light performance.

On the Hero 9 the front LCD displays a live video of what you’re capturing, which means you can hide your self view and free up some screen space. You also tend to look more into the lens of the camera although I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing for a video call!

By default the screen turns off after a couple of minutes. If you want it to remain on, you’ll need to disconnect the USB cable, swipe down and then left on the rear screen, tap Preferences | Displays | Screen Saver Front and then change this to Never. You can also choose between a full screen cropped view or the actual view from the initial settings screen.

At the moment webcam mode doesn’t capture audio which is very inconvenient on a desktop computer that won’t have a microphone by default. You’ll have to use an external mic  – perhaps the one that came with your phone or a USB mic. But you’ll get noticeable audio delay with this method.

If you’re happy using OBS, you can add some delay to the audio – I found 450ms about right – to try and bring it in sync with the video, and you could send this to Zoom or another conferencing app from OBS. I’ll discuss both these options further shortly.

Video capture devices capture the output from the HDMI connection on your GoPro. Most of the cards available today support the UVC standard which means software like Zoom and Microsoft Teams recognise them as a webcam without having to install any drivers. And you can also capture audio over the HDMI cable, via the GoPro’s built in microphone, although I didn’t find this was particularly reliable.

They have a USB connection on one end that you should try and use with a USB 3 port on your computer, and an HDMI-in port for connection to your GoPro. You will also need an HDMI to micro-HDMI cable. I’ll have links down below to the exact capture cards and cables I’m using.

Unfortunately GoPro ditched the micro-HDMI port starting with the Hero 8 Black, but most GoPros before this will work with this method. You can add a micro-HDMI port to these newer GoPros with the GoPro Media Mod and they will then work with one of these HDMI capture cards as I’ll show later, but I wouldn’t buy the accessory just for that. The quality is a little bit better than the native webcam mode, and you do get audio, but you could buy a decent dedicated webcam for the price of the Media Mod.

Mine worked via an extension cable which you’ll probably need. Settings may vary slightly on different GoPro models, but on a Hero 5, from the Preferences menu scroll down to HDMI Output and choose Live so you don’t see any of the on-screen camera info. The GoPro Hero 5 Black can output 4K if your capture card can use it. The Elgato can record 4K footage, the cheaper HDMI card will downscale 4K footage to 1080p. The Hero 8 and 9 only output 1080p via their Media Mod.

Your GoPro can now be used as a webcam. In Zoom go into Settings | Video and select USB Video. This may have a different name depending on the exact capture card you purchase. In Settings | Audio, select Digital Audio Interface (USB Digital Audio). Check it’s working with the Test Mic button. Say something and you should hear it back after a few seconds of silence.

I found audio with the Hero 5 a little temperamental, even with the much more expensive Elgato HD60 S+. Sometimes I got no audio for no apparent reason. I’d be interested to hear how you get on – please let me know down in the comments. If you can’t get the audio working you can always use an external microphone.

If you do happen to have a Hero 8 or later with their GoPro Media Mod, I found audio worked more reliably and was better quality too with the front mini shotgun mic. It’s not immediately obvious how to get the live image with the media mod installed. You need to press the side mode button to cycle to the webcam icon and then press the record button to select this mode.

There is a final option which works with a Hero 7 Black or newer – basically any camera with the GoPro Live feature. It turns your camera into a wireless webcam and even includes audio.

This is not a great solution for video conferencing because of the 2 second plus delay introduced by the wireless connection, but if you have nothing else it might still be an option!

You need some software on your computer for the GoPro camera to communicate with wirelessly. On a PC you need to download the free open source RTMP server called Monaserver as I covered in my previous video. Make your Windows PC network profile is set to Private. Check that video for setup on a PC.

On a Mac install Sallar, another free open source RTMP server, by downloading and opening the .dmg file that I’ll link to down below in the video’s description. Then drag this application into the Applications folder as prompted and run it.

A video icon will appear in your menu bar which we’ll come back to. Take a note of the IP address of your Mac which you can find under System Preferences | Network | Status.

In the GoPro app on your phone swipe across to Live and then tap on Setup Live, and then RTMP. Under “Enter your RTMP URL” enter rtmp:// followed by the IP address you just noted down followed by /live.

In OBS click on the + icon as before and this time add a Media Source. Leave Create new selected and provide any name you like. Then click OK. Untick Local File and under Input enter the same address you just entered in the GoPro app or you can paste the local address you just copied to the clipboard.

Now in, for example Zoom, choose OBS Virtual Camera in Settings | Video. You should get your GoPro cameras video. Then go to Settings | Audio and choose the VB-Cable as the microphone which will pass across the monitored audio from the GoPro camera in OBS. The video and audio should be mostly in sync, albeit both delayed by at least a couple of seconds. It’s nice that this is possible, but the delay is a little too long to be truly useful. I tried dropping the resolution all the way down to 480p but that made no difference. And both Monaserver on a fast PC with a wired connection and Sallar on this Mac with a wireless connection have the same delay.

I thought it’d be useful to compare the quality of a few of these options with the GoPro cameras I have as well as a 2012 MacBook Pro’s built in webcam. I’ve also added my iPhone 11 camera used with iVCam as I showed in another article and my Panasonic G80 mirrorless camera with both HDMI capture cards as a benchmark. Take a look at the video for a better comparison.

I found the best option overall was the cheap USB capture card. And it’ll work with any camera with an HDMI output and even works great with my mirrorless camera. Even if you can’t get audio working, you can use an external mic. There is a small amount of delay – around 100ms – but it would be acceptable for a video call. And you could use OBS if you like tinkering to reduce this – and even green screen your background! And with its UVC support, it works with all the video conferencing apps I’ve tried without having to install any additional software.

The only real advantage the Elgato has for over 10 times the price is that it can record 4K footage, but only the Hero 5 supports this out of the GoPros I tested, and it’s no use for video calls anyway. The HD60 S+ has other features too like passthrough, but they’re not relevant in this discussion.

Don’t forget to take a look at my YouTube video at the top of the page, and subscribe to my YouTube channel where I’m releasing videos every week on the latest technology and how to get the most out of it. Many mountain bikers or other extreme sports fans use GoPro cameras to document their adventures. And then they get back home and see ... a choppy video!

Do not rush to throw your camera furiously out of the window. Instead, take a deep breath and have a look over the following solutions to fix your broken GoPro video.

Although GoPro cameras revolutionized the way we make videos, they keep causing some headaches from time to time. Below are the most common GoPro problems and solutions to them.

Playing your scenes back directly on the camera can make your GoPro footage choppy. That is a general problem for all video cameras. You should always copy the files from your SD card to your laptop, desktop, or tablet hard drive and then play them back.

Instead of compressing your broken GoPro video thereafter, start recording your videos in a lower resolution. You will also have to give up using the Protune feature. Shooting with Protune allows you to perform a little video editing later. But if you do not plan to do it, just turn Protune off.

Also, you should not rename your files before transferring them into a secure hard drive. That can have a negative influence over the importing process.

GoPro Studio has three workspaces, or Steps: "View & Trim," "Edit," and "Export." Please keep in mind that the .MP4 files can only be imported into the first Step. On the contrary, .AVI and .MOV videos can be imported into the second Step. .AVI and .MOV files are the result of converting the .MP4 videos into GoPro Cineform.

If you have a Mac and import your video files into one of its native applications, they won"t be processed by GoPro Studio anymore. Both iPhoto and iMovie modify the files. After that, GoPro Studio fails to recognize them as GoPro footage.

It may sound exaggerated, but you probably did not use enough power to insert the card into the camera. It lacks a contact point and is not recognized by the latter.

GoPro offers a list of recommended cards. They should definitely work well with your GoPro camera. Other models or manufacturers may experience compatibility problems. The camera output and the SD card do not always fit together.

You can use the solution if you see the "SD ERR" message too, but it is a must for handling the "NO SD" error. You should use the official GoPro App to format your card.

Imagine that you suddenly cannot move around inside the camera"s menu. It seems to be frozen and not responding. You can try one of the few quick fixes.

Use the "MODE" or "SHUTTER" (for older HERO models) to reset your camera. Hold it for 10 seconds. If it does not work, try to put the battery out of the camera and then insert it again.

It can happen that you simply missed a software update. Usually, your GoPro App will inform you about a new release. If you ignored the message or did not have time for it, now you have to install the updates. Connect your GoPro App to the internet, your camera to the WiFi, and let the App do the job.

Not everybody wants to use GoPro Studio to edit videos. You may be as well satisfied with what you"d shoot and just directly watch it. But your PC won"t play the video files. Why is that?

Before playing your videos in a common video player, import them into the GoPro Studio. Then convert to the .AVI or .MOV format. You need the last one for the Windows Media Player.

Like in the two previous cases, your outdated graphics card may fail to process high-resolution videos. It makes you think your GoPro footage is broken, but it is actually not.

Your hardware may be unable to handle the videos. A strong sign of it is that you can open the audio but see no visuals. Not only the graphics card plays a role, but the RAM, too.

Sometimes the reason is that your GoPro video is corrupted. Repair it online with Wondershare Repairit Online for free, no download, no registration, and takes seconds to finish! The online version can repair over 10 video formats and 150 videos per week in a quick and safe way.

If you have exhausted all of the offered methods, you still have a chance. If your GoPro footage is choppy or corrupted, Wondershare Repairit - Video Repair is your last resort. It can recover 15 formats of video from any camera.

Repair damaged videos with all levels of corruption, such as video not playing, video no sound, out-of-sync video or audio, playback errors, header corruption, flickering video, missing video codec, etc.

In this case, Repairit needs an example of a not corrupted video that you"ve made with the same camera. It also should be in the same format as your damaged video.

Quite a few reasons can make your playback choppy. Most of the time, your end device fails to deal with the high-resolution GoPro videos. You will need to upgrade your hardware or use an external extension.

Many GoPro users have reported this problem to be an SD card issue. You should use cards approved by GoPro. To exclude other problems, always import the footage with the native GoPro application, the GoPro Studio.

GoPro cameras freeze for two reasons: either the software must be updated or the SD card troubles it. Some SD cards use buffering, and GoPro cameras do not like buffering. Change the card you are currently using against one from the recommended list.

As with many other aforementioned problems, this one may be caused by the video corruption, not enough RAM or free space in the destination folder, too old GoPro Studio, or not enough capacities of your graphics card.
