Samsung Display (Hangul: 삼성디스플레이), formerly S-LCD Corporation (Hangul: 에스 엘시디, Japanese: エス・エルシーディー), is a South Korean manufacturer of OLED panels and formerly a manufacturer of amorphous TFT LCD panels, owned by Samsung Electronics.

The company was established in April 2004 in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea as a joint venture between Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (51% share) and Sony Corporation (now known as Sony Group Corporation)(49% share).

S-LCD, as of April 25, 2008, operated with a monthly production capacity of 100,000 seventh-generation amorphous silicon (a-Si) panels and 50,000 eighth-generation panels based on PVA technology,Samsung Electronics and Sony LCD televisions. S-LCD originally had production facilities in both Japan and South Korea. Due to rising costs and an increasing demand from the Latin American market, S-LCD opened production facilities in Baja California, Mexico, where both Samsung and Bravia have large LCD production facilities.

On December 26, 2011, Samsung Electronics announced that it will acquire all of Sony"s shares. On January 19, 2012, Sony sold to Samsung all of its shares of S-LCD for 1.07 trillion Korean won (72 billion Japanese yen) in cash.

2008: Sony and Samsung announce that due to increased demand, a second eighth-generation production line will operate in the S-LCD factory in the second quarter of 2009.Sharp Corporation, in order to compete effectively with Samsung, a task made difficult by their current collaboration.

Samsung Electronics, the leader in TFT-LCD technology, today announced the largest 5-inch transmissive plastic TFT-LCD display for portable applications such as mobile phones and notebook computers. Plastic panels will also enable numerous other new applications including wearable displays with helmets, glasses and other fashion related accessories.

Samsung developed its new 5-inch TFT-LCD display by applying amorphous silicon technology to transparent plastic substrates. Considered the next-generation in flat panel displays, this technology involves the use of pliable plastic instead of rigid glass in TFT-LCD production. The plastic will not break and the external design can be freely shaped making potential applications virtually limitless.

The plastic TFT-LCD R&D project has been done in cooperation with SoftPixel Inc., a company specializing in plastic liquid crystal displays. The project has also received support from the Information Display R&D Center as part of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program funded by the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy.

"Future customer requirements dictate that we take this next step in the evolution of TFT-LCD technology," said Kyuha Chung, vice president of R&D for Samsung Electronics" LCD Business. "By working with our partners on this R&D effort, we"ll be able to solidify our leadership position in new emerging market applications for plastic LCD displays."

In the past, thermal resistance has posed a problem in the development of transparent plastic substrates. Obtaining the TFT performances needed for plastic substrates also required low-temperature processes and the degree of substrate deformation from heat was proportional to the screen size, making it difficult to enlarge the screen or improve the picture quality. Samsung has addressed these issues with a new processing technique for the amorphous thin-film transistors, color filters and liquid crystals at a lower temperature the normally required.

Also, Samsung Japan has reduced the price of the 15-inch SyncMaster 570STFT display from $712 to $510, a 28.4 percent reduction. The U.S. version of the monitor is expected to be reduced in price soon as well. The prices are some of the lowest price range for TFT-LCDs that are available in the market.

The price of flat-screen monitors continues to fall, as prices get closer to traditional CRT monitors. Tim Cook, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Operations, told market analysts in early February that the gap will lead to “dramatic price elasticity,” and as a result, demand for flat panel displays will pick up significantly.

Samsung opened a new production line for liquid crystal, flat-panel displays at its manufacturing plant in Korea last August. Part of the production facility is that financed by Apple to the tune of $100 million. Aside from the financial reward, Apple will use the Samsung products in its own flat-panel computer displays.

The production line can produce nine 14.1-inch, six 17-inch or four 21.3-inch TFT- (thin film transistor) LCD panels from one glass substrate in a more efficient, cost-effective process.

Samsung is the world’s largest manufacturer of TFT-LCD panels, according the IDC Japan, with a 20.5 per cent share of the global market during the first half of 2000.
