Gateway will announce on Thursday three of its latest models, which feature easy-to-use display settings and an adjustable stand for additional viewing positions. The $209.99 15-inch FPD1560, the $299.99 17-inch FPD1760 and the $349.99 19-inch FPD1960 LCD monitors are currently available direct and through Gateway"s retail partners, including Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA.

"They make sense from a value-add point of view--new Gateway PC customers will want their monitors to match their PCs, and LCDs are what they are constantly looking for," said Kelly Odle, a Gateway spokeswoman.

Gateway ranks third behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard in the North American LCD monitor market. Dell is by far the leader with more than 30 percent market share, while Gateway has about 5.5 percent of the market, according to research firm iSuppli.

LCD monitors succeeded cathode ray tube monitors in the United States over a year ago, and analysts expect them to dominate in the desktop market over the coming years. In the first quarter of 2004, LCD monitors made up 54.4 percent of the market. In the first quarter of this year, that number grew to 73.2 percent. By the first quarter of next year, LCD monitors will reach 92 percent, according to iSuppli.

About 57 percent of the LCD market is made up of 17-inch monitors, while 15-inch LCD monitors comprise about 28 percent. Monitors with 19-inch LCDs had about 11.4 percent of the market in the fourth quarter of last year.

However, LCD monitors, which come in smaller sizes than LCD televisions and don"t include TV components, are far less expensive. In fact, the traditionally volatile LCD market is at a low point, in terms of pricing, according to Rhoda Alexander, an iSuppli analyst.

Gateway is including patent-pending EzMenu on-screen display-setting technology, as well as analog and digital inputs, in the monitors. The monitors will also come with a removable base, making it easier for customers to mount the monitor. A $49 optional stand, the Ergotron Neo Flex LCD Stand, allows the height of the monitor to be adjusted up and down, swiveled left and right, and pivoted from landscape to portrait views.

The bottom line: Gateway"s budget 17-inch P-170L packs in plenty of extras, including an HDMI port, but this is definitely a laptop for media watchers, not for gamers.

The Gateway P-170L QS is a good bargain when you factor in the $1,299 price tag and a new design. At this price, though, you"re getting passable features and mediocre performance parts. It does provide a decent desktop-like experience, given its 17-inch widescreen. I think this system would be more attractive to users if it reached the $999 price point, like the Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237. For a more comprehensive media center, with options for an HD DVD drive and dedicated graphics, check out the HP Pavilion dv9500t.

The bottom line: Combining a top laptop CPU and graphics card for less than the competition, the Gateway P-171XL FX jumps to the top of our favorite gaming laptops list, even if you get stuck with an HD DVD drive.

Three thousand dollars might sound expensive for any laptop, but when you consider the $600 CPU and the even pricier graphics card, the Gateway P-171XL FX doesn"t seem like such a bad deal. If you"re a gamer on a tight budget, you can always go with lower-priced alternatives, such as the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 ($2,499) or the ASUS G2S ($1,850). Or you could really trick it out by going with my Editors" Choice, the Dell XPS M1730 ($4,024). But for those gamers whose budgets fall somewhere in between, the Gateway P-171XL FX has a good balance of premium parts and price for a gaming laptop.

Pricing in at $2,999, our Gateway P-171XL FX Edition review model is priced towards the middle of the gaming notebook segment, with the Toshiba X205 coming in at $2,000 and the Dell M1730 starting at $3,538 for a system with similar capabilities. For consumers looking at purchasing one of these models, it really comes down to user preference, on what brand they trust the most, and what design you want to carry around to show off at class. The Gateway offers very good hardware and performance for the price, and is a worthy contender against gaming notebooks.

The bottom line: Combining a top laptop CPU and graphics card for less than the competition, the Gateway P-171XL FX jumps to the top of our favorite gaming laptops list, even if you get stuck with an HD DVD drive.

We were impressed with the Alienware M9750, but we’re even more impressed that the P-171 has all-around better hardware, and costs $1,500 less. It’s truly a remarkable achievement to offer this much power at a reasonable price point. Even better, Gateway is also offering two other FX notebook models with slightly lower specs for $2K and $1600, which is crazy affordable for a gaming notebook. Though we don’t like the lame trialware Gateway includes with the notebook it’s nothing 30 minutes of cleanup won’t fix. And we’d also like to see a DVI-out port instead of the legacy VGA port, though the inclusion of an HDMI connector is a nice touch.

This sweetly priced all-purpose laptop with a big screen would make a good second household PC, but heavy gaming is out. Attention, Best Buy shoppers: This 17-inch laptop costs just $900 (as of 11/29/07), and we found the Gateway P-6825 for an even better $749 at Best Buy"s online store. It"s a modest portable in some respects, to be sure: Its speed is middling and some of its features are not top-shelf.

The P-6831FX produced excellent scores in all of our gaming related benchmarks. Not even the Dell XPS M1730 with its dual GeForce 8700M GT"s in SLI could outperform the single GeForce 8800M GTS powering the P-6831FX. Though Dell has since upgraded the M1730 with dual GeForce 8800M GPUs as well. It is obvious that the P-6831FX"s performance is bottlenecked by the low-end processor, but it still managed to produce amazing benchmark scores in our gaming tests. None of the other the mid-range notebooks in our test came close to the P-6831FX when it came to gaming. Unfortunately the picture is quite different in productivity and CPU intensive tasks. It was easily outclassed in nearly every module of PCMark Vantage and performance in 3DMar06"s CPU module was also quite poor.

If you really want to buy a gaming notebook but don"t want to spend several thousand like many of the PC companies would like you to do, the Gateway P-6831FX is an option for those needing high caliber graphics without the price. The system is well suited to other general purpose tasks but gamers will likely get the most out of it.

Gateway’s budget gaming rig offers outstanding performance for a very attractive price. It’s hard not to be impressed by the gaming capabilities of the Gateway P-6831FX, and its large screen size and HDMI port make it a good choice for multimedia fans too. It held up remarkably well on our gaming tests, even against its more expensive sibling. For gamers on a budget, you won’t find a better performing rig for the money.

The bottom line: We loved the pitch for the Gateway P-6831 FX: a 17-inch laptop with 3GB of RAM and Nividia"s GeForce 8800 graphics card for only $1,350. But keep an eye on price changes to get the best deal.

If this notebook was completely closed, with major components soldered on, at this price it would still be a good deal. But Gateway is offering so much more. The CPU is upgradable. Extra mini-PCIe and Hard Drive bays sit empty, waiting for you to fill them with some future goodness. And peering deep into the FX"s innards, I could faintly see another socket exactly where I expect the GPU to be - so there might be some pleasant surprises for the more adventurous hardware tweaker. In short, this is a notebook that should see even an avid gamer get two years of use from. Consider the rapid pace of game development and you will appreciate the compliment.

For $1,100, the Gateway P-171X is an affordable and stylish desktop replacement. You get a large and crisp display, plenty of storage space, and bells and whistles you just won’t find for under a grand. It’s not exactly blazing, but if you just need a notebook for home and light media use, the Gateway P-171X is definitely worth a look.

So things do limit this from being perfect. The fact it has the ability to have two drives, but no raid is odd. Also, the screen casing, while nice, is a bit flimsy, but nothing cheap. I also don"t get putting 667mhz memory when 800 is basically the same price. Oh in a perfect world i guess.

Gateway has made an amazingly affordable gaming notebook with the P-6860FX. Like we said before, most gaming notebooks cost and arm and a leg, but at just $1,349 the P-6860FX is a remarkable bargain that delivers excellent performance. The only complaints we have are very minor, which include its relatively slow processor and its counter-intuitive volume buttons, but that’s about it. Just remember it’s only available at Best Buy, so if you want more information about it you have to visit the retail portion of Gateway’s website.

The Gateway P-6860FX offers GeForce 8800 gaming muscle and plenty of memory in a midpriced laptop, making it a great choice for gamers who fall just short of hardcore.

Given a current price of about $1300 the Gateway P-7811 FX gaming notebook is a excellent deal. It’s a practical machine for someone who wants to do some gaming, watch some video, and replace their desktop with a system that can occasionally be moved. It would be great to see an option for an upgraded processor, and there are some small issues that should be fixed down the road, but right now it offers more value for your dollar than almost any other gaming notebook on the market.

The Gateway P-7811 FX has a very good keyboard and screen with an enthusiast video card and surprisingly good battery life. Its port placement isn"t ideal and some parts of the chassis are not built as well. However, these do not detract from the fact that at between $500-1000 less than any other notebook with the same class graphics card and components, the P-7811 FX is great for gamers on a budget.

We don"t know how Gateway makes money selling these things, but the combination of high-end components and low price makes the 17-inch Gateway P-7811FX the best mobile gaming deal going right now.

Multimedia buffs and casual gamers will love the Gateway P-7811FX"s 1080p-quality resolution and energy-efficient premium parts if they can get past its back-breaking weight and 64-bit compatibility issues.

Solid productivity performance, excellent graphics, and a reasonable price tag make the Gateway P-7811FX a wise choice for anyone seeking a desktop replacement notebook that can do it all. Some multimedia mavens may prefer the HP Pavilion dv7, which offers better sound and adds a Blu-ray drive and TV tuner for $500 more. But this Gateway system blows away HP’s dv7 when it comes to 3D games and its higher-resolution display.

Gateway has updated its FX gaming notebook lineup with Intel"s newest high-performance Centrino 2 mobile chipset, and the result is the $1,399 P-7811FX, which delivers superb performance for the money. (It"s currently available only at Best Buy.)

Gateway"s P-7805u FX is probably one of the best overall values available on the market for someone looking for a gaming laptop computer system. It may not have the fastest processor but it has more than enough to play all the latest PC games on it thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics with 1GB of memory. Even though it is designed for those wanting toplay games on it, it can also be used for more general purpose computing as well. It would be nice to see Gateway address the battery design though.

Gateway has produced some very affordable high performance gaming focused laptops with its P series laptops. Their latest P-7908u FX certainly brings high performance graphics to the table but too many of its other components lag behind for it to be an excellent gaming system. Sure, the GeForce GTX 260M can really drive today"s games but the low resolution panel and older Core 2 Duo processor are falling behind.

The Gateway NV series notebooks are the 15.6” and 17.3” models that offer competitive specs at competitive prices. The newest 17.3” NV79 models feature Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors at a starting price of $649. Measuring 16.23 x 11.02 x 1.0/1.42 inches with weights starting at 7.3 pounds, the Gateway NV79 comes in a wide range of configurations that include ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 dedicated graphics and a Blu-ray Disc drive option. Compared to the truly large 18.4” desktop replacements like the Toshiba Qosmio X505 and the Fujitsu LifeBook NH570, the Gateway NV79 is more moveable and portable if you are used to carrying a heavy backpack. Like most Gateway laptop series, the NV79 comes in different colors, though currently only the black and red ones are available.

We look at the Gateway NV7901u (black) model for this review, and it’s identical to the NV7902u (red) in all other aspects except the color. The Gateway NV7901u runs on the Intel Core i5-430M processor at 2.26GHz with 3MB L3 cache and a 1066 MHz FSB. The notebook comes with 4GB DDR3 1066MHz memory, a 500GB SATA drive and a multi super dual-layer DVD drive. The NV7901u/NV7902u models are powered by ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics with 1GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM and up to 3GB of shared system memory. The notebook can hold its own when playing demanding FPS games, and we will show you the gaming details and a video below.

The Gateway NV7901u comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Microsoft Works 9. Gateway includes its own Recovery Management software and back up software as well as a webcam tool and Launch Manager. An MS Office 2007 60-day trial software and Norton Internet Security 2010 60-day trial are also onboard.

Gateway has been using the same notebook design on all its laptop lines except the very large P series notebooks. The shiny cover with chromed edges worked on the smaller Gateway LT2118u netbook and it works well here on the NV79 series. The brushed chrome edging and hinge are eye-catching, and the Gateway badge decorates the shiny patterned cover. Like many Sony notebooks, the Gateway NV7901u has a barrel hinge with the power button on the right hinge end cap. The 17.3” widescreen TFT LCD display has 1600 x 900 native resolution, and it has good brightness and color saturation. The screen also has excellent viewing angles.

The Gateway NV7901u has a roomy keyboard with a dedicated number pad. The keys are large and completely flat, but they have good travel and the typing experience is good. The multi-touch trackpad is off center to the left and instead of the mouse buttons, the Gateway gives you a thin strip of mirror-like mouse rocker that’s not easy to use. It’s not difficult to use because the rocker style is different from the conventional two-mouse button setup, it’s because the rocker is very thin. The mouse rocker does however rise above the palm rest which helps you find it while touch typing. Four LED lights live above the keyboard (hard drive, caps lock, num lock and Bluetooth status) and seven touch buttons live next to the LEDs to provide quick control access to the speakers, wireless, Gateway MyBackup tool and more.

The Gateway NV79 is the top of the line in Gateway’s NV series of laptops. The NV7901u and the NV7902u are the same system in different colors, as we mentioned. Gateway is fond of giving unique model numbers to track different colors on the same systems (not fun for us reviewers or consumers). The Gateway NV79 runs on the Intel Core i5-430M CPU at 2.26GHz with 2.53GHz Turbo Boost. That’s the same CPU that powers the 18.4” Toshiba Qosmio X505 and the 18.4” Fujitsu NH570. The Gateway has two SODIMM slots and it comes with 4GB DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM. You can upgrade it to a max of 8GB memory easily with convenient access to the DIMM slots beneath a screwed-on door (clearly marked) under the laptop. The Gateway NV7901u comes with a 500GB SATA drive which is on par with most 17-inchers and 18-inchers currently on the market. The notebook has a Super Multi double layer DVD drive that has good speed for DVD playback and file transfers. If you fancy a Blu-ray Disc/DVD player, then check out the Gateway NV7920u/NV7919u models.

We put the Gateway NV7901u through PCMark Vantage X64 benchmark tests and provide the score comparison with the Toshiba Qosmio X505-X860 and Fujitsu LifeBook NH570, both systems running on the same CPU. Competing with the Gateway’s ATI graphics, the Qosmio X505-Q860 has NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M graphics while the Fujitsu LifeBook NH570 has the NVIDIA GTS 330M. So we also ran 3Dmark 06 on these systems and provide scores for comparison. The third set of scores is the Windows 7 Experience Index.

The Gateway NV7901u runs most productivity software smoothly including MS Office apps, IE, Adobe Reader for PDF files and Windows Media Player for movie and music playback. Built-in apps like the webcam application and other utilities run well on the Gateway. Streaming content over Wi-Fi was also very smooth in our real life tests: Netflix movies played at 25 fps which was very watchable, and Hulu played at a cool 30 fps which isn’t an easy task for many notebooks.

The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics scored higher than the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 330M (Fujitsu LifeBook NH570) but lower than the GTS 360M (Toshiba Qosmio X505) in benchmark tests. Real life gaming tests confirmed this scenario as we put the notebook through FPS titles like Battlefield Bad Company 2, CoD Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis. Battlefield BC 2 cut scenes ran at 26 fps on average and 30 fps on most missions. Modern Warfare 2 played at anywhere from 30 fps to over 50 fps which is to say the gameplay was very smooth. Crysis though gave the Gateway some trouble not only in performance but also Direct X 10 was less stable and crashed the game a few times. When we ran Crysis with all performance and graphics quality setting at Medium, Crysis played at 25-30 fps and felt smooth in most missions; but when we set all qualities to High, the game played at 14-16 fps which made most missions unplayable. Luckily with Crysis, Medium vs. High in graphics quality settings doesn"t affect the in-game environment and object details that much.

The Gateway NV7901u runs at cool temperatures when handling most productivity software, DVD playback and streaming movies. Gaming however raises the core temperatures and GPU temperature. After a few hours of playing games listed above, the Core temperatures went up to 60 degrees Celsius and the GPU temp to 50 degrees with the GPU fan deployed at 30%. Those actually are acceptable numbers when gaming.

The Gateway NV79 offers plenty of ports including 4 USB ports, VGA out, Ethernet RJ45 and Modem RJ11 jacks, an HDMI port, a mic jack and headphone/ SPDIF jack. The Gateway also has a multimedia card reader and a PCI ExpressCard slot behind the same screwed-on door under the notebook that offers access to the DRAM. Under the same door, you will also find an additional SATA hard drive slot. There is a security lock on the left side hinge tip but there is no fingerprint scanner.

The Gateway NV79 comes with a 6-cell rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery that’s 4400 mAh in capacity. The notebook should last you 3 and a half hours for web surfing, working on documents and pictures and playing music. In our real life battery tests, the Gateway NV7901u lasted 2:15 hours playing a DVD using the built-in optical drive; it lasted 2:10 hours streaming movies over Wi-Fi from Netflix and 1:50 hours streaming movies from Hulu. The Gateway comes with a 100W auto sensing AC charger that’s 100-240V, and the notebook takes less than 2 hours to fully charge.

For the budget minded users, the HP Pavilion dv7t and the Gateway NV79 are godsends. The Gateway NV7901u offers a large display, the newest Core CPU, a built-in DVD drive and strong dedicated graphics power, all under $1,000. Sure it’s over 7 pounds, but the notebook looks modern and it’s pretty thin for a 17.3” beast.

Display: 17.3” widescreen TFT LCD display, 220 nits, 1600 x 900 native resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, native support for 720p content. VGA port onboard. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with up to 4GB HyperMemory (1GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM and up to 3GB of shared system memory) and Mobile Intel HM55 Express chipset.

Software: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Microsoft Works 9 included, also Windows Media Player, IE8 and Microsoft Silverlight preinstalled. Gateway Recovery Management software and Gateway MyBackup solution included. Third party software includes Adobe Reader, CyberLink PowerDVD and Power2 Go. MS Office 2007 60-day trial software and Norton Internet Security 2010 60-day trial included.

Beautiful apartment. Our mistake for not researching site as we assumed it was a hotel (by the name). Signage terrible - but that is Italybas a whole. The number 15 for address was on building as was the plaque that said “Gateway to Cinque Terra” but the building was under construction so scaffolding and netting covering entrance. The 3 minute walk ended up being an hour an a half. I guess if we,’d realized it was not a hotel, but an apartment we would not have been mislead. Overall, though, once we were there it was a lovely place to be stationed at to see Cinque Terra. We took a ferry next day to Monterosso and walked over the mountain to Venazza! A real workout and beautiful views and scenery from the top!
