To begin your fix, you"ll need a few simple tools and a replacement LCD screen. For tools, I recommend a screwdriver set with a variety of small bits, such as a Phillips #00 and a Torx T5. It"s also a good idea to have a few thin metal blades or plastic spudgers. These are really handy for removing the trim that surrounds the screen.

As for the replacement LCD, you should be able to buy one either from the laptop manufacturer"s authorized parts dealer or a third-party supplier. Depending on the screen, they usually cost between $50 and $250 dollars -- more if it"s a high-end display or if you buy an OEM replacement. Regardless, you"ll want to buy a new screen that matches your broken one exactly. The only sure way to do this is to remove the broken one.

After disconnecting the power supply and removing the battery, carefully examine the bezel around the screen. You"ll need to remove this bezel to access the screws that hold the LCD panel in place.

On this laptop, several rubber cushions hide screws, which hold the bezel in place. I"ll need to remove these cushions and the screws that are underneath.

With the hidden screws removed, I use a thin metal blade to pop loose one of the bottom corners, and work my way around the bezel with a plastic spudger.

Note: Your laptop may not have cushions or hidden screws. The bezel may simply snap onto the lid or be held in place with double-sided tape. Just adapt my instructions to fit your specific laptop.

With the LCD"s mounting brackets exposed, you can remove the screws that secure it to the lid. Then rest the display front-side-down on the case and disconnect its cable.

If your laptop was made before 2010 and has a LCD with fluorescent backlights, it will likely have two cables. But as this is an LED-backlit LCD, it only has one.

Now, locate the manufacturer"s label and note the model number. Using this information you should be able to buy an exact match for your broken screen.

If the dimensions, mounting brackets, and connector all match, you"re ready to install the screen. Connect the new panel to the cable, position the panel in the lid, and secure it using the appropriate screws.

Before reattaching the bezel, it"s a good idea to test the new panel. Reconnect the battery and power cable and turn the machine on. If the display works, you can reattach the bezel and any external screws and rubber cushions. The repair is now complete.

A dying or cracked display doesn’t mean your laptop is a paperweight. For most laptops, a screen replacement takes $80 and an hour of your time at most. If you’re a DIYer, replacing a broken laptop screen yourself is a great way to save cash, as most computer repair shops will quote you $150 to $300 for the job.

Before doing anything, give your laptop a full look-over and inspection to ensure the screen really needs replacement. If the graphics card on the motherboard is dead, for instance, you may be wasting your time and effort on replacing a perfectly good screen. Additionally, if the laptop has been recently dropped or otherwise possibly physically harmed, you’ll want to double-check for other damage as well.

To ensure the graphics card is functioning, you can plug a desktop monitor or TV into the laptop, as most have a standard blue VGA monitor and/or a HDMI output. If the picture looks good on an external display, your graphics card is likely good and the screen is at fault. If you don’t get any picture, keep in mind some laptops require you to press certain function keys on the laptop to activate external display output. If you do that and video still doesn’t display, your graphics card and/or motherboard is likely broken, rather than your screen.

If the laptop outputs to another display successfully, use the computer for a while to ensure the keyboard and other laptop components appear to be functioning normally.

Before you replace your laptop’s LCD, here are the caveats to the general steps that follow. This is not meant to be a guide for ultrabooks, two-in-ones, tablets, Macbooks, or other, more specialized notebooks, however. It’s more for average, run-of-the-mill laptops. But even then the general steps I discuss do not work for all such laptops. Some will require a different process and/or more work to replace the screen, such as accessing the motherboard by opening the main case of the laptop.

Because of that crucial caveat, before buying a new LCD, it may be a good idea to try to remove the damaged screen first, to ensure you can perform the replacement. If, after following the first few steps the process looks different for your laptop, I recommend scouring Google and YouTube or finding a repair professional for further help on your exact laptop brand and model.

Finding a replacement LCD is typically easy—and you don’t have to pay the crazy prices the manufacturer usually wants. Just search eBay, Amazon, or Google with your laptop model number and the words LCD screen. You’ll find most regular screens can be had for as low as $50 to $80. If you aren’t finding anything, try other identification numbers from the laptop label or documentation. Some vendors have one or two different sets of identification numbers that could serve as your model number.

When shopping for the LCD, most sellers will alert you to compare the specs and placement of the video cable on the back of their screen to your current screen. This is another reason to crack open the laptop bezel before ordering a replacement. However from my own experience, if the seller says the screen is compatible with your exact laptop model, it usually works.

Table or other flat working area: You’ll need a spot to sit (or stand, if that’s your thing) with a flat area to work on your laptop. This gives you a reason to clean off that messy dining-room table or desk.

Small-head magnetic philips screwdriver: Not small like a mini screwdriver from an eyeglass repair kit, but I’d say between that size and a mid-sized screwdriver would work. If you don’t have a magnetic-head screwdriver, try to find a magnet big enough to magnetize the driver head. This helps the screws stick to the head, making it much easier to remove and replace the screws without cursing as they fall all over the place.

Plastic putty knife or other thin object: This is optional, to aid in prying apart the screen bezel from the case. Personally, my finger nails usually do the trick. If you do use another object, ensure it’s thin enough but not so sharp that it will leave scrapes or other evidence of prying.

Find the round cover stickers that are hiding the screws on the screen bezel, the case surrounding the screen. These stickers are usually on the bottom of the bezel, near the screen hinges, when you have the screen opened. You should find one on each side of the screen.

Use a sharp, pointy object—like an opened safety pin or needle—to help remove the cover stickers without damaging them. Stick it between the edge of the cover and bezel, and then pry the sticker away. Once removed, place the covers in a safe spot, with the sticky side up to help ensure there’s enough stickiness when you place them back on.

Use your screwdriver to remove the now-exposed screws. Remember: righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Some screws are easy to remove; others, not so much. But moving the screen into just the right position usually exposes the screws enough for removal.

Carefully start prying the screen bezel away from the back side of the screen case. Work a fingernail or other thin, prying object into the crack around the outside of the screen. The bezel is usually secured to the back case with plastic snaps, so give it some force while prying—but not too brutish. You’ll hear the unsnapping of the fasteners when prying.

Once you’ve unsnapped the screen bezel, it may or may not be easy to remove. If not, it’s likely stuck around the screen hinges. Moving the screen position up or down, with some gentle force if necessary, should free it fully.

Once the bezel is fully removed, you’ll find the LCD secured to a metal trim frame on the left and right sides. Remove the two screws (one on each side, on the top) holding the trim frame pieces to the back screen case. Now, you should be able to lift the LCD (with the trim frame pieces attached) slightly away from the back screen case.

On each of the trim frames’ sides, remove any screws that are securing it to the LCD. Most laptops have three screws on each side; however, the smaller laptop I photographed here doesn’t have these screws—the LCD is actually secured to the trim frame pieces by tape on each side.

Now you should be able to set the LCD face-down onto the keyboard. Be careful not to put excessive force on the video cable attached to the back of the LCD.

Disconnect the video cable from the back of the LCD. Though the laptop I photographed here has the connector on the very bottom, most laptops have the connector near the center. If so, keep in mind that the portion of the cable running down the screen is usually stuck on the back of the screen with some mild adhesive. Just gently pull the cables away from the screen. You usually must remove tape that’s securing the video connector to the back of the screen as well. When you get to the point of actually pulling the video cable out of the screen connector, it should unplug with little force.

Once you’ve fully removed the broken LCD, simply place the new one face-down like you did the old one. Reattach the video cable to the connector and place the cables and any tape just like they were for the old one.

Set the new screen up in the side trim frame pieces, then re-secure it like the old one was: usually three screws in each side of the trim frame pieces, and then a screw on top of each to secure it to the back screen case.

When you get to the point of putting the bezel back on, just line it up and push/squeeze the bezel back into the snaps of the rear screen case. Before replacing the bezel screws, ensure the bezel is fully snapped in place and no crack exists around the edges of the screen case. Lastly, use that safely pin or needle to reattach the sticky screw covers.

Replacing a broken laptop screen is more often than not, a very easy project. If you have a broken screen, don"t jump on ebay and sell it for considerably less than it"s worth. Instead, go to ebay and try to find the replacement LCD, the entire cover for your computer, or even better, your computer with a blown motherboard but intact screen! The later case, you not only get a new screen, but extra memory, a backup hard drive and perhaps even a WiFi card you didn"t have before.

It helps to know your computer. If you don"t, do your research first. Some laptops have the LCD glued (epoxied) into the frame. In these cases it"s usually much easier to replace the whole cover. Most don"t have this problem though.

What we"ll need, besides the replacement LCD of course, are the tools to open the display enclosure. In this case, we"ll need a tiny magnetic phillips screwdriver, a size 1.5 allen wrench and something to pry apart the snap together frame.

The later can be a couple of small (tiny) flat edged screwdrivers, a metal ruler or paint scraper with the edge filed to a sharper edge, etc. In my case, I use the tools that were included with a battery replacement for an iPod. The tools alone were worth the cost of the battery!

Anytime we work on a computer, it"s best to remove all sources of power first. In this case, that includes the power supply and the battery. Don"t forget to remove the battery!

Examine around the screen. Look at all the metal and plastic parts. In some cases, the screws will be obvious. In others, you my have to remove stickers or rubber plugs to access them. Failing to find them, do a Google search for a take-apart instruction for your specific computer.

Note that I put my screws into an old ice cube tray. This is a handy way of keeping the screws in order of the steps they were removed. Makes putting things back together much easier.

This computer"s cover was also snapped together. Using the prying tools, first separate the tabs holding across the top and work around and down the sides. The cover should just fall away.

There"s always tape! It"s purpose is to hold wires where they belong or metallic tape to connect RF shielding. Look over the panel carefully and make notes where the tape is and why.

Now carefully remove any that interferes with getting the LCD out. Note the shielding tape that"s is screwed in here because we want to put it back the same way.

Now, locate the screws along the sides of the LCD. There will be four to six of them and only on the sides. There"s usually a nice notch in the casing allowing easy access to those screws. Hmm... It"s like they"re meant to be replaced! :)

Remove connectors as you can access them. In this case, the display connector is under the metal tape on the back shield. There"s also the inverter wire for the backlight in the lower left corner. Use a tiny screwdriver or tweezers to get these connectors free.

If, like me, you ordered the replacement display based on the Make and Model of the computer, you may have received a functionally equivalent LCD (different manufacturer).

This should be fairly straight forward. Just reverse the procedure of removing the old one. Try to avoid touching the face of the screen. Some laptops have another screen in front of the LCD. This would make it hard to remove fingerprints!

Note that the shield behind the LCD is sometimes a little tricky to fit. Take your time and make sure it"s reinstalled the same way it was originally.

Replace connectors and tape wherever possible. Add tape if you need to. Also assure that all wires are where they belong. We really don"t want to pinch and damage wires when we put the cover on.

Now, put the cover back on the way it came off. In this case I just closed the display, aligned and pressed the cover into place. Then I carefully examined the edges to verify that no wires are pinched and all gaps are closed.

Hold your breath! It might take longer than you expect. If all went well... You"ll see the display. It should need no adjustments since it"s unlikely the settings have changed since the old one was broken.

Hey i got a acer inspire with a bad screen but has and old hp with gd screen but connection is on the left hand on the scer and on the right of hp can anythong be done to make it wrk?.

It"s very unlikely that the screens are compatible. If they have the same or very comparable part number, it"s possible that the screen is simply installed inverted from the other brand. I would do intensive research before attempting to connect the display. Even if the connectors are identical, if the connectors don"t have the same layout then attempting to use it would destroy either the display, the logic board or both!0

I have a Samsung laptop and the screen is damaged but is still functioning but half of the screen is fine and the other half isn"t. The damaged part of the screen goes from the top left hand corner to the bottom in the middle. If I get my screen replaced will all my work, images, videos etc. still be saved on the same laptop.

All of your work, images, videos, etc. are located on your hard drive. Even if you fail to repair the screen, you can still access the hard drive and all of its data with another computer by removing the drive from the Samsung and either installing it into an external 2.5" enclosure or using a SATA/PATA to USB adapter (about $15 on eBay).

I was considering buying a used ibook G4 with a higher operating system, but a cracked LCD and putting my old screen into the cracked screen. Hi - I bought a screen from ebay which didn"t match the model I wanted to replace but on confirmation from the seller that it would work, installed it. Looks like I was able to successfully install it but the issue is that when I switch on my laptop the screen appears grayish (I can see the desktop) looks like each alternate pixel is white. But as soon as I try changing the display properties on the screen the screen becomes clear and perfect. It works fine in all display settings its just that it triggers something. Also I observed that if I hibernate the machine the screen remains clear. But if I shut down or restart it it again goes back to the grayish look. Would appreciate if you could help. One of the most common problems with laptops is damage to the screen. Unlike desktops, we all carry our laptops from place-to-place, so it’s no wonder that screen damage happens so often.

Before trying to replace your laptop screen, we have to first make sure that your screen actually needs repair. You may have dropped your laptop, and after seeing that it isn’t displaying an image, simply assumed that the screen must have broken. The screen might even be cracked a little, and yet that still might not be the reason you can’t get an image.

If your laptop has aVGA output, we connect it to a desktop monitor or television to see if it shows the image correctly. If it still doesn’t show, it means that your graphics card or motherboard is probably damaged. If this is the case, we would suggest replacing these components. Only when we can see an image on an external monitor butnotyour laptop screen do we replace the screen.

Another problem we may discover is that we may see a dull image on your laptop screen, or the backlight may flicker on and off. If this is the case, it is probably caused by a faultyinverter. If so, we contact you to suggest replacing the inverter and see if that fixes the problem.

Once we’ve decided that the laptop screen needs replacing, and you’ve given us the go-ahead to start working on it, the first thing we do is remove the power brick and battery. Next, we look for rubber tabs on the frame around the screen.

After finding these, we use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry open these covers one-by-one. These reveal several screws holding the “bezel” or screen-frame together.

In most cases, we can unscrew these bezel screws using a small, phillips-head screwdriver. However, there are some laptops frames that are held together by allen screws, in which case we use an allen screwdriver instead. We have tools to remove every type of screw, so we’re ready for whatever weird puzzle the laptop designer throws at us.

In some cases, there may be no screws holding the frame in place. In this case, we can open the frame by inserting a small, flat tool into a slit that runs along the top and sides of it.

Once we’ve got the screws out, we pull apart the bezel and the LCD screen. In most laptops, the frame is secured to the screen with plastic snaps, so we know it has finally come out when we hear the “pop” of these snaps releasing.

Once the bezel is removed, we see the LCD screen inside of another metal frame. This metal frame is resting against or attached to the back case of the laptop. We remove the metal frame from the case either by unscrewing more screws or by simply pulling them apart.

Once we can get the LCD screen and metal frame away from the back case, we unscrew the rest of the screws that hold the metal frame to the screen. The LCD then comes loose, but is still attached to the video cable.

Usually, we can order a replacement LCD screen using just the model number from your laptop. In some cases, we may need to know the part number of the LCD screen itself.

If so, we look at the back of the LCD screen once we remove it from the laptop. The part number is a string of letters and numbers, such as LP254WE2 or LTN156AT 19-001. This is the information we need to find the right replacement screen.

Some prefer to always replace their screen with the official LCD offered by the manufacturer. Others prefer to save money by using a replacement LCD provided by an independent manufacturer. Ultimately, it’s up to you which one you want us to install.

To replace the screen, we first remove the tape holding the ribbon video cable to the screen. Then gently unplug the cable. There’s another cable running from a small circuit board, called the inverter. This cord is the power source for the LCD. We remove this cord as well.
