Audi beat Volvo to the fast wagon punch by a year with its 1994 RS2 Avant; the 850 T-5R followed in 1995. Porsche was involved in the engineering of both, but only the 850 went on to inspire European motorsport success.

Available as both saloon and estate, the T-5R became the 850R in 1996. And after 1997, when the 850 was re-engineered and rechristened V70, so the V70R came along, with the 296bhp S60R following it in 2004. Ebbing sales saw Volvo drop the ‘R’ brand in 2007.

Having run Gothenburg’s entries in the Swedish and world touring car championships for the past two decades, Polestar Motorsport was subsequently announced as Volvo’s partner for a new line of performance parts, upgrades and fully re-engineered performance road cars in 2009.

There has already been an S60 Polestar, which was initially not destined for the UK will now join the V60 Polestar in making its entrance into the market as Volvo"s performance vehicles. It’s what the series of bespoilered Volvo concepts you might have noticed at motor shows these past few years has been all about.

Not that Polestar Volvos are solely about spoilers. In the V60’s case, Polestar started with a 3.0-litre T6 R-Design model and then went to town as much as possible without needing to tear up the undemanding servicing and maintenance routine.

What results is 345bhp, 369lb ft and a launch control-governed 0-62mph claim of 5.0sec. Not quite the stuff of like-for-like Audi RSs or Alpina BMWs, but it’s probably gutsy enough for a level-headed Volvo. There has never been a more powerful production car from Gothenburg than this.

A bigger overhaul has been carried out on the V60’s chassis, informed by the experience of running current Volvo S60s as racing cars since 2012 but optimised for the road. Polestar Motorsport added the stiffness and dynamic poise required for this V60 in several ways, starting with a carbonfibre strut brace between the two front suspension turrets.

Luxurious Inscription models add upgraded leather, electric front seats, a 12.3-inch TFT display in place of dials in the instrument cluster, keyless entry and a powered bootlid.

Volvo has already confirmed that the S90 will also be available with the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain already seen in the Volvo XC90 SUV. We expect an S90 hybrid to emit around 50g/km of CO2 and produce around 400bhp. It"s not on sale yet, but is likely to follow later this year.

The S90 will also be available with what Volvo calls ‘semi-autononomous’ driving capability, called Pilot Assist. This will make gentle steering inputs to keep the car in lane on the motorway at speeds up to 130km/h. Volvo describes it as “another step towards full autonomous drive”.

Speaking about the car, Volvo’s senior vice-president of research and development Dr Peter Mertens said: “The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We’ve completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”

Volvo previously announced that it has partnered with Microsoft to develop a range of technologies, including a wearable computer called HoloLens that’ll allow customers to visualise their car in 3D when configuring it at the dealer.

The new Volvo S90 also heralds the continuation of a new Volvo naming strategy, with three distinct model lines. These will be called 40, 60 and 90, prefixed by S, V or XC to denote saloon, estate and SUV bodies respectively.

This S90 is on sale now, with prices starting at £32,555, rising to £42,055 for the top-spec model. It replaces the ageing Volvo S80 as the brand’s rival to the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, Mercedes E-Class, Lexus GS and Audi A6.

Two engines are available in the 2014 Cayman, to match the two primary trim lines. The base Cayman gets a 2.7-liter flat six-cylinder rated at 275 horsepower; the Cayman S gets a 3.4-liter flat six good for 325 horsepower. Six-speed manual and seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmissions are available for both models. When equipped with PDK and the Sport Chrono package, the base Cayman accelerates to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds; the Cayman S makes the run in 4.6 seconds.

Some of the highlights of the options list include: Porsche Communications Management, or PCM, which offers a seven-inch touchscreen display, CD/DVD/MP3 player, available six-disc CD/DVD changer, iPod/USB connectivity, navigation, and more; a Bose Surround Sound audio system with 445 watts and 10 speakers; a choice of three different steering wheels, one with multi-function audio, phone, and navigation controls; a choice of three seating options, including the standard sport seats, power sport seats, and adaptive sport seats with available heating and ventilation; a leather interior package to enhance the look and feel of the dash, doors, and more; dual-zone automatic climate control; built-in quad-band GSM telephone; and a "light design" package that adds dimmable, multi-zone LED illumination to the cabin.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have crash-tested the 2014 Porsche Cayman, but with a rigid aluminum chassis, potent brakes, advanced traction and stability controls, plus a full complement of airbags including Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP), the Cayman should prove to be a safe sports coupe in the event of an accident.
