A 7-inch TFT LCD is a complete active-matrix liquid-crystal display module whose diagonal screen length is 7.0 inches (≈ 178 mm) and whose pixels are individually controlled by thin-film transistors (TFTs).

Built on a glass substrate only 0.3-0.5 mm thick, it adds row/column driver ICs, an LED light-guide and an interface FPC so designers receive a ready-to-mount screen instead of bare glass.

Working Principle of a 7-Inch TFT LCD

1. Pixel Switching  
The TFT array behaves like a matrix of tiny voltage-controlled valves.
When the TCON receives one frame:

- Gate drivers scan each row in 16.7 ms while source drivers deliver 0-5 V analogue levels to 1 024 × 600 (or 800 × 480) sub-pixels.  
- Liquid-crystal molecules rotate incoming polarised light; the degree of twist determines how much LED light reaches the RGB colour filter, producing 16.7 M colours .

2. Backlight Management  
An edge-lit LED bar injects light into a PMMA light-guide only 0.6 mm thick.

A reflective film below and a prism film above steer > 90 % of the photons through the TFT cell, achieving 250-1 000 cd/m² luminance while consuming only 1.5-3 W .

Example of Status Feedback

- Backlight PWM 80 % duty → 935 nits measured (green indicator): sunlight-readable mode active.  
- Panel temp > 70 °C → NTC thermistor pulls fault pin low, MCU halves LED current (red indicator).  
- No video sync → TCON enters standby; current drops from 450 mA to < 15 mA .
