I can"t get mroe than one LCD to display text at a time and that display will look something like that image. Basicly what should be on two or three display is displayed on a single display while all other displays will show either the offline or online texture despite being set to show public text v.v

They are all powered, owned by me, shared with faction, and public read/write. Turning them off and on again usualy only results in all of them showing the online/offline message regardless of settings.

I"m kind of at a lost here as to how to get them working right but they did work once. for a short time they were werking perfectly and now they all behave like this no matter how times I quit the program and restart.

yes. you can also see the resulting text if you try to manually edit the text. you just cannot see it on the outside surface. This is still an issue on my DS, but only after other players join the server. It works fine when I am alone on the server as the host.

The first thing that we would recommend, if you are experiencing some technical or gameplay issues with the game, is to check our support portal. Keen Software House needs to stay profitable in order to continue development and support of Space Engineers, and to take risks, to invest into experiments that may not pay off in the short term, and to develop innovative concepts.

Sometimes we have to invest in people, teams, or projects, without knowing if they will work out. You need to give them time. And if you want to have a high bar for innovation, expecting novel things, you need to take the risk.

Why are they high-risk? Because they are hard to do, and usually it takes many iterations until we figure out the right way to do it. It usually takes a few iterations to perfect it. This means that doing water can take a few weeks (if we get it right from the start) or a few years (if we need to experiment, iterate, throw away past experiments, look for specialists in this area, etc). Same for the engine rewrite and AI / living worlds for our games.

A:Actually, even this update isn’t paid. The major part of this update (LCD screens, Replay Tool, new music tracks, smaller improvements) is free for everyone. Only the smaller and not mandatory part is paid - Decorative Pack, which you can purchase here.

A: The way we designed this is that even people who don’t purchase the Decorative Pack can play on servers with people who own the Decorative Pack. Players who don’t own the Decorative Pack won’t be able to build with these new blocks, nor interact with them, but they will be able to view them in-game.

A: To support future development of Space Engineers and other leading-edge projects we plan to work on at Keen Software House. Players kept asking us for something they could buy to support the development of Space Engineers, and the Decorative Pack is a great option for them.

A: Right after Space Engineers left early access and all hot issues were resolved. Most of the work was done by the Art team, the rest of the developers is working on other long-term updates.

A: We want more people to play Space Engineers, which means we must lower the barrier of entry. A: Hehe, if you put it this way, it sounds kind of funny. But the reality is that decorative blocks are low-hanging fruit, not a bottleneck towards those other mentioned future features. Additionally, the decorative pack can bring added profit and make the mentioned things happen.

Looking at our upcoming plans, I can say that we are going to work on another package similar to this one. It’s not a secret that we want to bring you more things you asked for in the past, such as new skins, new weapons, new economy system etc.

The best monitor for vertical use we"ve tested is the Dell U2723QE. It"s an impressive overall office monitor with a ton of features. Its stand offers impressive ergonomics, including rotating it into portrait mode in either direction, so you can choose which side to put the inputs on, which is convenient if you have your PC directly on one side of the monitor. It"s a premium model thanks to its massive USB hub that has five USB-A ports and three USB-C ports. One of the USB-C ports supports DisplayPort Alt Mode with 90 W of power delivery, and another serves as the KVM switch, letting you control multiple devices with the same keyboard and mouse.

It"s an excellent choice to use as a photo editing monitor because it has an sRGB mode that results in excellent accuracy before calibration. It means you won"t need to calibrate it, and colors look life-like and aren"t over-saturated. It also displays a wide range of colors in HDR if you need to use it for video editing in HDR. While its reflection handling is disappointing, it still gets bright enough to fight glare if you want to use it in a well-lit room.

Second, the Steam Deck is a mess. It’s rushed, unfinished, buggy, and unstable. If Valve sold the console I’ve been playing at Best Buy or GameStop, people would return it in droves.

Of course, Valve isn’t stocking this $400 handheld gaming PC at Best Buy. The maker of Half-Life and Portal is trickling it out directly to devout fans of Steam, the platform that pioneered the idea of selling “early access” games before they’re actually complete. Remember when Valve let an unknown developer sell a broken, buggy game called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in early access? It changed the world. The bugs didn’t outweigh the fact that its unproven formula was uniquely fun — to the point that PUBG, its clones, and the games it inspired (including Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends) rank among the most popular titles around the globe.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: it’s easy to look at pictures of the Steam Deck, see a Nintendo Switch, and imagine yourself magically playing a gigantic library of PC games that “just work” without messing with graphics settings or controls.

That’s not the Steam Deck that exists today — and not just because the Steam Deck is an absolute chonk that can practically fit a Switch between its grips. (It reminded me a little of Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer swallowing Princess Leia’s Tantive IV.) No, today’s Steam Deck expects you to tweak more and forgive more than your average PC, not less.

What do I mean? Last year, I borrowed a then-state-of-the-art Aya Neo handheld gaming PC and managed to play through Persona 4 Golden on that $800-and-up Windows machine. But it never quite feltlike PC gaming to me. I could barely navigate the OS with its joysticks and touchscreen, there wasn’t enough performance to competently play even moderately demanding games like Outer Wilds and Valheim, there were no precision controls for shooting or point-and-click titles, and there was no point in bothering with anything but the lowest graphical settings. (There was also no way to quickly and reliably suspend the system without losing progress.)

The Steam Deck turns all that on its head. Starting at just $400, its custom AMD chip with RDNA 2 graphics instantly outstrips every boutique portable gaming PC on the market. While you might still struggle with the very latest titles, it’s got enough oomph that I’m playing Control and the Resident Evil 2 remake at a smooth 60 frames per second outside of big fights, and I can even turn the graphics up if I’m willing to accept 30fps instead. Older or less demanding games can easily run on their highest settings, like Max Payne 3 or Mirror’s Edge.

And if the game you’re playing really doesn’t need the juice — say Hotline Miamior Nidhogg — you can throttle the frame rate, GPU clockspeed, or even the processor wattage to prolong the Deck’s battery life. It only takes three taps, and the awesome open-source MangoHud overlay, with Valve’s Gamescope, give you instant feedback on your frame rate, clockspeeds, frame times, even how quickly you’re draining the battery and how long it’s likely to last.

Okay, you might ask, but all the games I just named have gamepad support — what about the decades of mouse-and-keyboard fare? The Steam Deck lets you borrow or build a dizzying array of custom control schemes that make them feel at home, too. In addition to providing an entire traditional gamepad worth of analog joysticks, triggers, and face buttons — almost all of which feel fantastic, I might add — you also get four rear grip buttons and a pair of Steam Controller pads so customizable, calling them “trackpads” feels like a disservice. You can click, swipe, flick, and “spin” a virtual trackball; press down on their pressure-sensitive surfaces; and even set their edges to continually move or turn your character... and every one of the Deck’s 20-plus programmable controls can issue multiple different commands depending on how and when you press. You can build macros and chorded combinations with other keys and per-key turbo modes, and like I said, it’s dizzying — and Valve barely explains how any of it works.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re thinking, “Uh, wasn’t the Steam Controller a flop?” But I’m here to tell you not only did it have an amazing cult following, the Deck makes it work. The fancy touchpads no longer get in your way if you’re not interested, and you can now get precision aiming without relying on them one bit: just rest your thumb on the thumbstick to activate a gyro so you can tilt the Deck to easily zero in on your target. And while you have the option of spending hours designing the perfect multi-layered control scheme, Valve makes it easy to add that gyro or a few extra grip buttons and go on with your day.

With Control, I did both, instantly making myself a crack shot with the railgun revolver while binding back buttons to let me fly into the air and summon a shield of debris without ever taking my thumbs off the all-important sticks. With Slay the Spire and Into the Breach,I simply reduced the “friction” on the virtual trackball so I could easily fling the 2D mouse cursor around. For many games, I often found that a Steam Controller cultist had already uploaded a great controller scheme — I love what Runic did with Torchlight II —and it’s a cinch to take any profile you see, remix it, and share it with the community.

Still, I’m not going to tell you that the Steam Controller is better than my 20 years of muscle memory with a mouse and keyboard, or necessarily a fit for every game. While I’m sure you might be able to swing a mean sword in Mordhau with the right tweaks, the full-forearm motion of a mouse just feels right to me.

For me, the best part of the Deck is how you can suspend the entire SteamOS session, at any moment, without needing to pause or save. I was about to run out of battery in the middle of a boss fight against a nasty dark demon in Control, but I never lost my place. I hit the power button, and though it took an entire hour for me to get back to a charger, I was able to fire it right back up again and keep on playing.

Speaking of the battery: it’s a weak spot, but it’s not as bad as I feared. I got just under two hours of Controlonthe Deck at 60fps and around 60 percent brightness, but nearly four hours when I set it to 30fps or in moderately less intensive games. And I never had to wonder how much time I had left or how to extend that battery life because the Deck can instantly report its own total power draw: if you see 20W in MangoHud/Gamescope, you know you’ll get roughly two hours out of the Deck’s 40Wh pack. Control drew 12 watts at 30fps, Max Payne 2 drew 10W at 60fps, andNidhogg drew only 6W. Not all games fit that formula, though; I saw Resident Evil 2 pulling over 20W at 30fps, and many games crossed the 24W mark at 60fps. You should know that downloading games at high speed dramatically stresses the system, too, drawing just as much electricity and causing stutter when I tried to play Call of Juarezsimultaneously.

Technically, I tested the $650 model with 512GB of fast storage, an etched anti-glare screen, and a premium case. The anti-glare works, though I don’t have the glossy screen to compare to, and this version doesn’t easily let go of fingerprints.

Those sessions were generally long enough to satisfy me, though I’m the kind of guy who’s never far from a high-wattage USB-C PD battery. I’ll also point out that the original Nintendo Switch wasn’t dramatically held back by the fact that it only got 2.5 hours of Breath of the Wild on a charge. But I worry about what happens after a year or two as the battery ages, particularly since iFixit shows it’s not easy to remove.

Valve’s Lawrence Yang tells me the battery will be one of the replacement parts on offer, though, and it does take pains to protect it while charging. I never saw the system draw more than 30 watts unless I was playing a game, it dropped to half-speed when it got three-quarters of the way, it trickle-charges the last 10 percent or so, and the last 4 percent took 15 whole minutes to complete. The whole charge takes 2 hours and 45 minutes, and it won’t keep charging forever on the plug: Valve lets it drain to 95 percent after “a long period of time.”

What doesn’t satisfy me is the Steam Deck’s fan. It never stops whining, the ramp-up can be jarring, and while Valve’s designers tell me they’re still optimizing the curve and improving the ramp rate, they say “high end games that max out the APU will likely not see a ton of improvement.” On the plus side, the fan does the job: I never saw the Deck throttle or felt the Deck’s grips or controls get hot.

When the Steam Deck works, I finally feel like I can take PC gaming with me. I fire up the new God of War or XCOM 2 or Streets of Rage 4, let my fingers melt into the fantastic controls, feel the rousing music come out of the truly excellent stereo speakers, watch smooth gameplay on the remarkably good 7-inch 1280 x 800 screen, and sigh with delight — knowing I can get through my long-neglected PC games one bite-size session at a time.

But the operative word is “when.” Because the Steam Deck’s software is coming in hotter than any gadget I’ve ever tested — every single day I used the Steam Deck, I was dodging error messages, bugs, crashes, black screens, UI glitches, regressions, even entire feature changes from Valve on the eve of release.

While Valve’s docking station and app shortcuts aren’t making launch day, it’s still a full computer with a USB-C port that supports peripherals and displays, and I put some of that to the test. I hooked up my own USB-C hub, monitor, mouse, keyboard, external drive, SD cards, and USB-C PD power adapters and took the full Linux desktop for a spin — and as long as I didn’t try to do anything too fancy, everything worked.

By everything, I mean I installed the Dolphin emulator and got Metroid Prime running perfectly on the Steam Deck (60fps at upscaled 720p resolution with anti-aliasing!) — with the caveat that I couldn’t disconnect the external mouse and keyboard until after I launched the game.

And then, I fired up the desktop version of Steam and added Dolphin, Chrome, and Discord as shortcuts so I could launch them via SteamOS as well, building specific profiles in the Chrome web browser for Stadia and Netflix so I wouldn’t have to rely too much on SteamOS’s lackluster but handsome touchscreen keyboard.

Back in SteamOS is where I started to run into issues: the Chrome browser wouldn’t launch fullscreen unless I tricked it using a Netflix or YouTube toggle, Dolphin wouldn’t let me see menus, and Discord wouldn’t properly detect my microphone. SteamOS also only seems to detect the Deck’s directly connected SD card, even when I had two extras mounted on the desktop. But I did manage to get Destiny 2 running on Stadia that way and was surprised how well it can fit the Steam Deck’s screen and emulated keyboard / mouse controls.

I won’t mince words: I’m a Linux n00b, and I haven’t yet been able to get the Epic Games Store up and running to see if I can force its games through Proton as well. (Too many dependencies, not enough sudo perhaps?) But I did install some native Linux games from GOG and the Humble Bundle with only moderate success: Full Throttle Remastered wouldn’t play audio, and Cave Story+ didn’t recognize the Deck controls.

If you do know Linux, you should know that anything beyond flatpak apps are at-your-own-risk, and “anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update.”

I lost track of how many times I had to reboot the system or reconnect a device because Bluetooth or Wi-Fi or an SD card stopped working as expected. A few games I downloaded never finished installing, randomly stopping in the middle or retroactively running out of space. Some games told me their “content” was “locked” when I tried to move them, or that they grabbed “corrupt update files.” Sometimes parts of my library, or all of the games on my SD card, would temporarily go missing. I destroyed one card after the Deck seemingly froze while formatting it, and I stupidly reset the console (never ever do that while writing to flash). There were times I couldn’t reach the Steam servers to download save games or verify ownership of a title — and let me tell you, it really sucks to find out you can’t play a single-player game like Control or Red Dead Redemption 2 on the go because of DRM. (My phone hotspot worked in a pinch.)

Occasionally, the whole system would lock up. Sometimes the UI would break or scale badly while connecting or disconnecting an external monitor. And while I didn’t have a lot of problems playing or installing games to SD, I did have lots of issues transferring between the SD and internal drive — and unusually long transfer times during which the Deck wouldn’t let me do anything else with the system. Games I’d already installed would suddenly need new updates or need to randomly re-verify a gigabyte or three worth of contents, and I had to download Elden Ring a second time after I’d already preloaded it. Even when the Steam Deck has no Wi-Fi, it pauses a long time before launching games, presumably to see if it can download a cloud save.

In many cases, Valve’s developers admitted I’d spotted a bug, and to their credit, a lot has changed over the past two weeks. The UI used to be incredibly choppy, and it’s way smoother now. I can now stream games reliably to Deck from my desktop PC, even if I can’t actually use the Deck’s controls or gyro there just yet. After at least three huge tweaks to the frame limiter, it’s finally stable. A huge update to Proton enabled a whole bunch of additional games.

But as I type these words, Valve has yet to fix Bluetooth, which never fails to lag, skip, and fail to reconnect after waking from sleep, and a recent update introduced a new issue where the Deck no longer reconnects to Wi-Fi, even though I have auto-connect checked and the password saved. The auto-brightness adjustment has never worked properly for me, despite Valve’s tweaks. The last update seemingly broke the download progress indicator, and... I think you get the picture.

In an interview, Valve candidly told The Verge that it knows many things won’t be ready on day one; it’s had to focus on showstopper bugs and hardware production while deprioritizing other work. “So many things will be coming out immediately after launch, in the weeks after launch,” Valve veteran Greg Coomer tells me. “We really do look at it as the starting gun instead of the finish line.” Valve’s Lawrence Yang says early adopters should expect frequent fixes for some time to come, even if you won’t necessarily see the multiple changes per day I saw during the review period.

Are frequent updates a bad thing? Early access can be neat! It’s exciting to see new features appear — like how all of a sudden, I could play my games on an external monitor with three different kinds of upscaling, including AMD’s FSR, which you can apply to any game from the quick settings menu and made Fallout 4 look so much better on a big monitor.

But it’s notgreat if, say, you want to hear how well the Steam Deck runs Windows before you buy one because I never got to test that — Valve’s promised GPU drivers have yet to materialize.

And you might actually care how well the Steam Deck runs Windows — because, despite Valve’s best efforts, the single-most frustrating thing is the one everyone saw coming a mile away: right now, you won’t quite know whether a game will actually run on Linux until you’ve downloaded it, installed it, patched it, let it install the first-time-launch dependencies, and hit play.

Let’s talk about those efforts for a moment because they’re not small: Valve’s Proton compatibility layer (which is built on top of Wine) really does make many Windows games run on Linux, and run incredibly well. I only saw the rare glitch, like weird effects around flashing lights in Max Payne 3 and choppy cutscenes in 1997’s Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear if those plagued the Windows versions as well. Additionally, Valve has a team of people reviewing the entire Steam catalog to see how games play — as of February 24th, 419 of them “work great,” and 398 are “playable” with tweaks, according to SteamDB scrapers. You can also theoretically look at the ProtonDB community reports to see what’s broken or try Valve’s checker to see which games in your own library might work.

But in practice, I couldn’t completely rely on any of those sources when it came time to play. They’ve all got holes. Duck Game is certified gold on ProtonDB, but listed as unsupported on Steam Deck, and it didn’t run for me. Valve’s database shows Persona 4 Golden is completely unsupported, too, even though Valve did the legwork to fix it and I played a few minutes without issue. And I definitely disagree that Deathloop “plays great” on Deck “right out of the box,” considering the low frame rate and stuttery Xbox gamepad emulation I saw when I tried to play. Valve also lists its own Half-Life 2 as a “great on Deck” title, but the default control scheme didn’t work for me at all (though a custom one totally did).

And even if the listings were accurate today, there’s a chance they won’t be tomorrow — like how Cyberpunk 2077 was working, even after the big patch, and as of publish, I can’t run it at all.

If you’re looking to play some of the biggest games in the world, which often use anti-cheat software, you may need Windows as well. Remember myPUBG analogy at the beginning of this story? PUBG doesn’t run at all, nor does Destiny 2 or Apex Legendsor GTA 5 or Lost Ark. My very first night with the Steam Deck, I discovered it won’t run the most important games I play with my friends — Halo Infiniteand Back 4 Blood — and none of these are a fluke. When we contacted the biggest game developers about whether they’d deign to enable anti-cheat now that Valve offers built-in support, most of them declined to even answer the question. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was braver, explicitly telling me why Fortnite won’t — because the rewards don’t justify the work it’d take to convince themselves they aren’t letting cheaters in.

On a lesser note, Valve doesn’t differentiate between whether the Windows or Linux version of a game is the version that’s been verified, so you need to watch out if a game might quietly have both. My review unit installed the Linux version of Rocket League, which no longer offers multiplayer, and the Windows version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which doesn’t launch at all. And while you can dive into a compatibility menu to force the Deck to download the other version, there’s nothing to warn you which is which — and, sadly, the Linux version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn’t support Windows cloud saves, so I might have to start from scratch.

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

The Steam Deck itself doesn’t require you to sign any agreements, but you’ll need a Steam account to log in, which means signing the Steam Subscriber Agreement and the Valve Privacy Policy unless you plan to preempt them by loading a different OS on the system.

I don’t blame Valve for shipping the Steam Deck before it’s fully ready. I might have made the same choice myself, considering Valve’s got at least half a year’s worth of preorders to fulfill before a single new customer will experience the Deck. That’s a lot of early adopters who’ll likely be willing to endure some bugs to be part of the club. Also, the Deck’s impressive performance might not be that impressive for long, since their RDNA 2 integrated graphics are beginning to make their way into thin-and-light laptops and presumably other portables to come. Valve probably doesn’t want to sell stale chips.

But you should know that it also means reviewers like me didn’t get to properly test it all: not Windows, not the delayed Dock, not Xbox Cloud Gaming (since we’re still waiting on the Linux browser version to recognize the Steam Deck’s gamepad), and not the ability to swap between two apps because that’s a feature Valve added at the last moment. And The Vergedoesn’t review gadgets on potential. We review what we can see and touch.

I do have some faith in Valve: as an owner of an original Steam Controller and the Steam Link streaming HDMI dongle, a passive observer of the Valve Index VR headset, and a pundit who can draw a straight line between the Steam Deck and Valve’s failed Steam Machines, I’m pretty sure it isn’t lip service when Valve says it’s planning to keep updating the Deck and building out the portable category. The Steam Controller and Steam Link got bug fixes and feature updates long after it was clear they weren’t going to change the world.

But if early access isn’t your beverage of choice, you might just want to wait for a Steam Deck 2. Because Valve, no big believer in the Osborne effect, is already strongly hinting that a sequel is inbound. Valve has repeatedly said that Steam Deck should be a “multigenerational product,” including in a new interview with The Verge.Valve founder Gabe Newell went one better in a chat with Edge, saying that “the second iterations” will be more about “the capabilities that mobile gives us, above and beyond what you would get in a traditional desktop or laptop gaming environment.”

When I flew to Valve’s headquarters last August to see the Steam Deck, I told you why I was putting money down: I loved the idea of taking my PC games on the go, resuming them right where I left off on my desktop, finallyhaving the time to play through Control and Resident Evil 2 and Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3and a mountain of indie games I used to wait years to buy on Switch because that’s the only way I found enough time to see them through. So far, that’s the one part of the Steam Deck that’s largely working out, and I can only hope it’ll get better.

Maybe game developers will natively target the Deck. Maybe they’ll come to terms with anti-cheat. Or maybe, like the Nvidia Shield portable I reviewed and purchased in 2013, it’ll stare down at me from a shelf, forever taunting me with unrealized potential. But at least this one seems to have a decent library of compatible games from the get-go.

Perhaps you’re in the process of picking out a desktop or notebook PC, or already have a laptop computer but aren’t exactly satisfied with the amount of screen real-estate it provides—either way, it’s time to get the 411 on the expansive world of computer monitors so you can find out what product(s) will fit your exact needs.

Formerly known as video display units (VDUs), the earliest monitors first implemented lights for computer engineers to be able to monitor the power state of their components and know whether their devices were working properly or not. As technology has advanced, computer monitors have come a long way in relation to what they can display and how they go about doing so.

To put it simply, the monitor you need to purchase is reliant on what you will mainly be using your computer for, and this can be broken down into three overarching categories: general/business use, professional visuals, and gaming. Not every monitor is created equal, as certain physical features and integrated technologies on a certain product may provide the best results for running gaming applications as opposed to office tools or professional graphic-design/video-editing programs.

It needs to be noted that monitors have their own vocabulary and jargon that you need to understand in order to make an informed purchase. Fortunately, Newegg Insider has a  comprehensive guide for monitor terms you need to know before diving in.

On the surface, screen size may seem to be the only difference between monitors besides brand. Before we get into everything that’s going on behind each display and what your PC may need in order to get the right results, it’s best to introduce the types of monitors as well as the various shapes and sizes they come in.

If you decide to cut costs and go for a lower-end monitor the color(s) you may have had in mind when finishing up a project could turn up quite differently on other screens. Of course, you’ll need to already have a machine that can run programs like Adobe Photoshop or Apple’s Final Cut Pro.

As will be covered in its own section below, gaming monitors may also include “adaptive syncing” technology that virtually eliminates tearing and stuttering by having the monitor match the refresh-rate of frames being pushed out by your graphics card.

Screen size (diagonal measurement) and aspect ratio (width by height) are essential to understanding the unique resolutions you get with ultrawide-display monitors—and we’ll be covering more of that along with the features that absolutely need to be considered when you’re in the market for a new monitor.

Fairly new to the consumer market, the curved-screen craze that started around 2014 with Samsung and LG TVs has made its way to computer monitors. Just like ultrawide monitors, curved monitor displays have extended left-and-right width that curves in towards the viewer. Since its inception, the main purpose of this feature has been to provide more immersion. Ultimately, these monitors can present a higher sense of depth that traditional flat-panel displays cannot.

In a nutshell, high dynamic-range (HDR) content uses the latest color-range technology to simulate true-to-life colors on screen. First used within the field of photography, HDR tech revolves around improving contrast quality, producing darker blacks and purer whites. HDR monitors work great with both professional visual and high-quality gaming applications. Of course, your specs should be up to par and meet the latest minimum requirements for these applications—and to get truly high-speed gaming, you should try to find an HDR monitor with a low response time.

It’s 2019 and the majority of screens you see out in the wild come with touch functionality – but these functions remain relatively rare in the monitor world. Generally, all monitors come with integrated, physical-hardware controls to adjust screen and picture settings. Some touchscreen monitors step it up by providing you with an on-screen, touchable overlay. Most importantly, touchscreen monitors are commonly used for compatible educational and commercial applications. Whether it’s an interactive learning app to help 4th grade students or a POS (point-of-sale) device at a sports stadium’s concession stand, touchscreen monitors may require specific hardware and software to properly work.

On the surface, PC displays are just screens that present various images—but clearly there’s way more here to consider than meets the eye. Now it’s time to go inside the monitor to see how a computer’s display hardware works.

The differences between LCD and LED technology are huge factors in determining what works for your end-goal and budget, and they’re the most common acronyms you’ll come across on computer monitor product pages.

Liquid-crystal display (LCD) technology was first on the scene for TVs but didn’t come to computer monitors until the mid-90s. The name comes from the fact that these displays have screens that consist of two pieces of glass that house liquid in between them. From there, the screen is divided into thousands upon thousands (sometimes millions) of rows and columns, better known as pixels (a term coined in the 1960s to abbreviate “picture element”).

Now, the hardware parts that push out the picture you see on your LCD-monitor screen are known as cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). These lamps give your LCD monitor a lifespan of about 30,000 hours. Because the technology is older, these products are usually thicker and heavier. Few of them support resolutions above Full HD (1920×1080, width by height), and the color-contrast range may also be limited at times. If you’re concerned about your environmental footprint, the mercury pollution that these monitors may emit is something you will need to properly address at the end of the product’s lifecycle.

On the plus side, LCD displays come at a lower price point and do not suffer from burn-in, a negative effect that occurs if you leave your screen on and the last image displayed remains lightly on the screen—even when it’s turned off.

Technically, LED displays are also LCD monitors since they have the same liquid between their two-piece glass screens. The difference lies within the hardware that’s used to shoot out the image. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used in place of a LCD display’s fluorescent lamps. Because of this, LED monitors are brighter and consume less power than LCD screens, ultimately boasting a lifespan of about 50,000 hours.

The technology for light-emitting diodes first came about in the early 1960s and were initially only able to produce red color. Of course the color capability of these diodes has evolved, but the efficiency and high level of performance has been consistent. On paper, LED monitors come at a higher price point because of their impressive color contrast and picture quality. If you’re looking for a screen to game on, you’ll have to go LED for the noticeably faster response time compared to LCD displays.

LED technology also makes the majority of these products thinner and lighter for quick and easy portability and installation. The one thing you’ll also have to look out for is that LED monitors have a higher risk of burn-in, so make sure to have a screensaver or turn them off when not in use.

Now that we’ve got an understanding of liquid-crystal displays and the two types of backlighting tech behind them, it’s time to get into the different panel types that LCD monitor screens have and how they relate to your computing needs. Just because certain panel types cost more than others does not mean that more expensive is generally better. It all comes down to which panel type’s features can best serve the tasks of general use, gaming, or professional video/image-editing applications, which will in term depend on color-reproduction technology, viewing angles, response times, and refresh rates.

If you’re a hardcore PC gamer, then twisted-nematic (TN) panels may be your first screen of choice. TN-panel computer monitors boast the highest refresh rates and fastest response times. Being one of the oldest display technologies, TN panels produce picture by utilizing translucent nematic liquid crystals within glass plates, a color filter and two lined filters (one vertical, the other horizontal). Due to the polarizing effect that occurs within TN panels, these types of monitors have the poorest color presentation and viewing angles. On the other hand, these displays are the most-affordable monitors, making them perfect for gamers who have already shelled out a lot of cash for their gaming battlestation.

Again, TN panels should be your panel of choice if you’re looking to get the highest performance from your gaming PC. As of writing, TN panels are the only types of monitors that can support a refresh rate of 240Hz, which means if your system and graphics card can generate and push out 240fps, the monitor in turn will match and refresh 240 frames per second, creating the fastest and smoothest visual gaming experience on the market.

Compared to TN panels, in-plane switching (IPS) panels house and emit the best viewing angles and most accurate colors. IPS panels were specifically designed to make up for the limitations of traditional TN panels. Perfect for graphic-design artists or cinematographers, IPS computer monitors have their inner crystal liquids adjust their alignment on a single plane (hence the name) to show accurate, true-to-life colors from any viewing angle.

Unfortunately nothing is truly perfect, as most entry-level IPS monitors do not have the same quick response times and refresh rates that TN-panel PC monitors have. Also, because of their high image-color quality and superior viewing experience, IPS monitors generally come at a higher price point than TN panels. Nevertheless, with the right adaptive-syncing technology (see G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync below) and computer specs, an IPS monitor could potentially be the best solution for great-looking, high-performance gaming.

Coming about in the 90s, vertical-alignment (VA) panels have their liquid crystal cells rest in a vertical position when the display is not in use—once voltage is applied to the display, the crystals shift to a horizontal orientation to let light, and ultimately your picture, through. Similar to IPS panels, VA computer monitors were made to provide an alternative option to the forerunner TN-panel monitors.

With decent refresh rates (not quite TN-level in most instances), VA monitors have better color contrast and image depth with their more versatile pixels. Having a higher bit depth means more colors can be used on each pixel. Though VA monitors have better viewing angles than TN panels (generally not as much as IPS), their slow response times make them better as a general-use device for home streaming or office-work applications.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which is found on many recent televisions and smartphones, is currently in the works for computer monitors. OLED screen technology consists of carbon-based materials that emit light when powered with electricity. Overall, OLED displays do not require a backlight or filters to produce their colors and moving images. They are also great for manufacturers because they are easy to make and are physically light for easy exporting and delivery.

The main attraction of OLED monitors will be that each of the display’s pixels will have their own light source to ultimately produce blacker blacks and truer colors across the board. 2019 may be the year we hear more about this tech for computer monitors, so make sure you check back here for any updates.

Now’s a great time to introduce monitor screen aspect ratios and how they relate to screen resolutions. By definition, aspect ratio is a display screen’s width in relation to the screen’s height. For example, some of the first television sets sold were near-square screens with a slightly larger width than height, making a 4:3 aspect ratio. Now, computer-screen resolutions (though absolutely similar to aspect ratio) are measured and portrayed in width by height pixels.

In 1987, the world was first introduced to monitors that housed 4:3 screens with a 640×480 resolution. As of writing, most computer monitors use widescreen ratios and Full HD resolutions, with the most popular being 16:9 at 1920×1080 pixels. By doubling up the width + height dimensions within an aspect ratio, you can get sharper resolutions (clearer visuals) due to more pixels being packed into the same aspect ratio. Of course, these aspect ratios and resolutions have also evolved due to more variations, such as curved displays and UltraWide monitors.

If you’re looking to game and get the best performance (graphics card output of frames per second & a monitor’s refresh rate) it needs to be noted that higher resolutions will require more graphics-processing power. Though 4K gaming is not impossible you’ll most likely need a system that runs and implements the power of two graphics cards to one display. If you’re on a budget or want the smoothest gaming experience, it’s best to stick to a resolution of 1920×1080 (maybe 2560×1440, depending on the capabilities of your PC’s components).

The standard for connecting devices to high-definition TVs, High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cables also work well in connecting your computer to your monitor. As of writing, the latest standard of HDMI 2.0 will give you a maximum 4K picture at a 60Hz refresh rate with the right components and display. Of course, HDMI is also able to carry over the audio signal from your computer to monitors with built-in speakers.

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connectors are starting to become legacy tech, but on paper have the same video-output capabilities as the first-generation of HDMI. You’ll need a separate audio cable (or HDMI adapter to the end that goes to your monitor) to get audio from your PC, but DVI can support up to 1920×1080 resolutions at a max refresh rate of 144Hz with the right components and display monitor.

Being the only analog video connector of the four main types (the rest are digital), Video Graphics Array (VGA) cables are now considered legacy technology. In this day and age, you’ll really only need to use this port if you’re stuck with or need to access older display devices.

Screen tearing has been an ultimate annoyance for gamers for quite some time. Screen tearing occurs when the frames-per-second (FPS) being pushed out by your graphics card does not match the refresh rate (frames being presented and refreshed within a second) of the display. The ugly lines that tear your image are basically the result of frames trying to catch up with another.

For some years now, games have implemented a selectable vertical-sync (V-Sync) feature that adjusts FPS and refresh rate but with the downside of increased input lag and FPS-performance dips. More recently though, the fine folks over at NVIDIA and AMD have developed a monitor-feature now known as “adaptive refresh technology” that properly addresses this age-old issue.

Remember, in order to benefit from these technologies you need to make sure the monitor you’re looking to purchase actually has support for either technologies and you have the matching, as well as compatible, GPU (graphics processing unit) from AMD (FreeSync) or NVIDIA (G-SYNC).

Along with plenty of monitor accessories to choose from, one of the main things that needs to be addressed is how and where you’ll be viewing your monitor. Classically, monitors have been left connected to their included stands and placed on desks. This will usually work in the majority of scenarios, but not all spaces are exactly the same. Unless it’s a really old model, today’s monitors come with VESA-mounting capabilities. This opens up the door to clearing desk space and creating unique computing stations.

Whether you stand or mount, the most important thing to remember is to ensure you have the right viewing posture. The image below shows the optimal positioning for looking at a monitor while sitting or standing.

Lots of monitors come with built-in speakers, and you’d be surprised by the power, quality, and accuracy of sound these built-in devices are able to provide. If your monitor doesn’t come with built-in speakers, the only options left are the ports that are on the device. HDMI, USB and an audio-out jack can give you the option to connect to compatible speakers or headphones. Ultimately, if your monitor does not come with any options for playing audio, you’ll have to go through your computer or laptop’s audio-compatible ports.
