This TFT kit comprises one of our smallest TFT displays and an adapter board that breaks the tail connections out to a simple 2x5 10-position header. The adapter board includes a backlight driver, so only a single 3.3v power input is required to bring up the display.
The adapter board is specifically designed for use with this display, so it fits directly behind the display with no PCB overlap. The display is a 1.3", full color, IPS display that looks incredibly sharp.

TFT displays are LCD modules with thin-film transistor technology. The TFT display technology offers full color RGB showcasing a range of colors and hues. These liquid crystal display panels are available with touchscreen capabilities, wide viewing angles, and bright luminance for high contrast.
Our TFT displays have LVDS, RGB, SPI, and MCU interfaces. All Displaytech TFT LCD modules include an LED backlight, FPC, driver ICs, and the LCD panel.
We offer resistive and capacitive touch screens for our 2.8” and larger TFT modules. Our TFT panels have a wide operating temperature range to suit a variety of environments. All Displaytech LCDs are RoHS compliant.
We also offer semi-customization to our standard TFT screens. This is a cost-optimized solution to make a standard product better suit your application’s needs compared to selecting a fully custom TFT LCD. Customizations can focus on cover glass, mounting / enclosures, and more - contact us to discuss your semi-custom TFT solution.
The provided display driver example code is designed to work with Microchip, however it is generic enough to work with other micro-controllers. The code includes display reset sequence, initialization and example PutPixel() function.

There are different components of a TFT displays that can be modified to create a custom color LCD. Some of the modifications are not too expensive, while others can be cost prohibitive. We will cover some of the main options available and their estimated cost when customizing a TFT display module.
Note: If you need a color LCD module, but do not need video or dot matrix (Graphical) capabilities, I would suggest using a lower cost alternative such as FSC*(Field Sequential Color display) aka known as a TN color display. A second option for a lower cost and much lower power requirement would be a custom segmented display module with color overlays.
This is by far the most expensive component of the TFT module to customize. There are industry standard glass sizes for TFT’s. The list includes, but is not limited to, 2.8 inch, 3.5 inch, 5.7 inch, 7 inch, 10.2 inch and larger. If you can design your product to make use of these standard sizes, then do it. If you need a unique size, say a something between a 2.8 inch and 3.5 inch, you may be forced to invest in a custom glass size. We have seen quotes for custom glass sizes for TFT run between $100,000 dollars to $150,000 dollars. Not a minor investment for most companies.
A TFT LCD display with a modified PCB, is still considered a custom color TFT. Modification costs to customize the PCB is an estimated $400 to $1,200 one-time tooling fee. The unit cost of the TFT display, with a modified PCB will be slightly higher than the cost of the TFT with a standard PCB.
Many products that incorporate a custom color LCD display will contain a touch screen or touch panel. These can be modified to meet a customer’s particular size for an estimated tooling cost of $3,000 to $4,000.

Sharp demonstrated a fourteen-inch TFT-LCD for TV in 1988 when the display size of the mass-produced TFT-LCD was three inches. The high display quality in Cathode Ray Tube size convinced other electronic companies to join the infant TFT-LCD industry aimed at emerging full-color portable PCs. Two decades later, TFT-LCDs replaced CRTs, making the vision of RCA"s LCD group in the 1960s a reality.
Sharp Technology Innovation Museum is located in the premise of Sharp Technology Center where LCD research was started and culminated in mass-producing the world-first mini-calculator mounted with LCD and C-MOS logic : the calculator is displayed at the British Science Museum.
It showed that an ideal display, namely, a flat, low-power, light-weight, CRT-sized full-color video display ,which could be used also in high ambient light, is technologically feasible, and that is exactly what had been long waited for to be used in an emerging information age since LCD was press-released in 1968 by RCA.
3. A large mother glass scheme could work for a-Si-TFT-LCD, which was proved by the high display uniformity across the entire display area. The mother glass 300mm x 320mm was the very forerunner of the mother glass generation competition which started around 1990, 2 years after Sharp 14-in. full color TFT-LCD was demonstrated.
At the very beginning of a-Si-TFT-LCD business startup, this work clearly showed a-Si-TFT-LCD have the potential to replace monster CRT in the coming information age by its superior characteristics: flatness, light-weight, small power consumption, high saturation full-color rendition, high readability in high ambient light, realized on the 14-in. display size, the most dominant size in the contemporary market by using the technology which was developed to mass-produce twenty 3-in. TFT-LCD TV panels laid out on the mother glass of 300mm x 320mm dimensions.
TV business group knew the market and joined the development project from the very beginning and gave a clear display quality target to TFT-LCD research group to achieve and make the TFT-LCD a viable display technology against CRT dominance.

Compared with ordinary LCDs, TFT LCDs provide very clear images/text with shorter response times. TFT LCDs are increasingly being used to bring better visual effects to products.
TFT stands for “thin film transistor”. The transistor of a color TFT LCD is composed of a thin film of amorphous silicon deposited on glass. It acts as a control valve to provide the appropriate voltage to the liquid crystal for each sub-pixel. This is why TFT LCDs are also known as active matrix displays.
TFT LCDs have a liquid crystal layer between a glass substrate formed by the TFT and transparent pixel electrodes and another glass substrate with a color filter (RGB) and a transparent counter electrode. Each pixel in the active matrix is paired with a transistor that includes a capacitor, which gives each sub-pixel the ability to retain its charge without sending a charge every time it needs to be replaced. This means that TFT LCDs are more responsive.
To understand how a TFT LCD works, we must first grasp the concept of a field effect transistor (FET), which is a transistor that uses an electric field to control the flow of current. It is a component with three terminals: source, gate and drain. fet controls the flow of current by applying a voltage to the gate, thereby changing the conductivity between the drain and source.
Using the FET, we can build a circuit as follows. The data bus sends a signal to the source of the FET, and when SEL SIGNAL applies a voltage to the gate, a drive voltage is generated on the TFT LCD panel. A sub-pixel is lit. A TFT LCD display contains thousands or millions of such driver circuits.
