In this Arduino touch screen tutorial we will learn how to use TFT LCD Touch Screen with Arduino. You can watch the following video or read the written tutorial below.
For this tutorial I composed three examples. The first example is distance measurement using ultrasonic sensor. The output from the sensor, or the distance is printed on the screen and using the touch screen we can select the units, either centimeters or inches.
As an example I am using a 3.2” TFT Touch Screen in a combination with a TFT LCD Arduino Mega Shield. We need a shield because the TFT Touch screen works at 3.3V and the Arduino Mega outputs are 5 V. For the first example I have the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, then for the second example an RGB LED with three resistors and a push button for the game example. Also I had to make a custom made pin header like this, by soldering pin headers and bend on of them so I could insert them in between the Arduino Board and the TFT Shield.
Here’s the circuit schematic. We will use the GND pin, the digital pins from 8 to 13, as well as the pin number 14. As the 5V pins are already used by the TFT Screen I will use the pin number 13 as VCC, by setting it right away high in the setup section of code.
I will use the UTFT and URTouch libraries made by Henning Karlsen. Here I would like to say thanks to him for the incredible work he has done. The libraries enable really easy use of the TFT Screens, and they work with many different TFT screens sizes, shields and controllers. You can download these libraries from his website, RinkyDinkElectronics.com and also find a lot of demo examples and detailed documentation of how to use them.
After we include the libraries we need to create UTFT and URTouch objects. The parameters of these objects depends on the model of the TFT Screen and Shield and these details can be also found in the documentation of the libraries.
Next we need to define the fonts that are coming with the libraries and also define some variables needed for the program. In the setup section we need to initiate the screen and the touch, define the pin modes for the connected sensor, the led and the button, and initially call the drawHomeSreen() custom function, which will draw the home screen of the program.
So now I will explain how we can make the home screen of the program. With the setBackColor() function we need to set the background color of the text, black one in our case. Then we need to set the color to white, set the big font and using the print() function, we will print the string “Arduino TFT Tutorial” at the center of the screen and 10 pixels down the Y – Axis of the screen. Next we will set the color to red and draw the red line below the text. After that we need to set the color back to white, and print the two other strings, “by HowToMechatronics.com” using the small font and “Select Example” using the big font.
Next is the distance sensor button. First we need to set the color and then using the fillRoundRect() function we will draw the rounded rectangle. Then we will set the color back to white and using the drawRoundRect() function we will draw another rounded rectangle on top of the previous one, but this one will be without a fill so the overall appearance of the button looks like it has a frame. On top of the button we will print the text using the big font and the same background color as the fill of the button. The same procedure goes for the two other buttons.
Incidentally, everything works out of the box for a Nucleo board. The Arduino A2 pin is correctly defined. The Arduino D8 pin is correctly defined.
Hi Defrayster, I have referenced a long thread back in 2016 started by Duncabar inwhich he posted the same problem of not being able to play audio SD along with TFT 2.8 Touchscreen ili9241_t3 lib (see https://forum.pjrc.com/threads/34424...h-Touch-Screen). Not sure if that is the same as the XPT2046 issue I am having, but maybe so. Anyway, several things were stated in the thread concerning the SPI mapping/connections and that is one thing I am still confussed about. In the original Tutorial Part 3-3: the TFT Display uses the MOSI=7, MISO=12 and SCLK=14. However, Duncabar change his usage of the Audio Board to the Wiz820 and used the normal MISO=12, MOSI=11 and SCK=13. So if I stay with Paul"s original code using the audio board and ili9241/xpt2046 combination, do I stay with the original pin mapping?
Secondly, the partial code below starts to execute but gets stuck in the SD card while loop at the end. Do you see any reason for this? Is there a issue with the order in which the SD card is executed relative to the pin and labruary declarations? This code works with the exclusion of the XPT2036 references.
2.8" TFT Touch Shield is an Arduino / Arduino Mega compatible multicolored TFT display with a 4-wire resistive touch screen. It includes an Arduino shield compatible footprint for attachment. The TFT driver is based on professional Driver IC and with 8 bit data and 4 bit control interface.
The TFT library provides the following Application Programming Interfaces(API). The library makes use of direct access to PORT registers instead of Arduino APIs. This is to increase the speed of communication between MCU and TFT. At present, the library supports Arduino, Arduino Mega (1280 or 2560) and Seeeduino ADK Main Board compatible boards. In Mega the 8bit data port of TFT is distributed to different pins belonging to different ports. This decreases the speed of graphics drawing when compared to Arduino. The choice of port pins are purely based on Arduino / Mega port pin arrangement.
TFT Touch Shield uses the Adafruit Touch Screen Library. To understand the principle behind resistive touch screen refer External Links. In short, a 4-wire resistive touch screen provides two voltage divider each for X and Y axis. By applying proper voltages for each axis and scanning the ADC values the position of the touch can be detected. These values are always prone to noise. Hence a digital filter is used.
The Raw ADC value has to be converted to Pixel Co-ordinates. This is done with map function. This mapping changes for v0.9 and v1.0. The demo applications already takes care of this mapping.
While in theory an Arduino can run any LCD, we believe that some LCDs are particularly suited to being an Arduino LCD display. We"ve currated this list of LCD displays that will make any Arduino-based project shine.
First is the interface. All of these displays support SPI. Builders often ask themselves (or us) "which interface uses the fewest GPIO pins? AND is that interface fast enough to update the screen at an acceptable rate for my application?" When using the relatively small procesor of the Arduino, SPI is usually the best interface because it takes few wires (either 3 or 4) however it does limit the overall size (number of pixels) that can be quickly controlled. I2C is another choice of interface to leave GPIOs open. We tend to recommend SPI over I2C for Arduino displays because SPI is quicker and better at handling more complex data transfer, like pulling image data from an SD card.
Which brings us to the second factor in choosing an Arduino display: the number of pixels. We typically recommend a display with a resolution of 320x240 or less for use with Arduino. Take for example a 320x240 24-bit display. Such a display takes 230,400 bytes *(8 + 2) = 2,304,000 bits for a single frame. Divide that by 8,000,000 (Arduino SPI speed of 8MHZ) = 0.288 seconds per frame or 3.5 frames per second. 3.5 fps is fast enough for many applications, but is not particularly quick. Using fewer bits-per-pixel or a display with fewer pixels will result in higher frame rates. Use the calculator below to calculate the frame rate for a display using SPI with an Arduino.
Third, we want to recommend displays that are easy to connect to an Arduino. Each of these displays has a ZIF tail or easily solderable throughholes, so no fine pitch soldering is needed. These displays can either be brought up on the CFA10102 generic breakout board, or with a custom CFA breakout board.

This 2.8″ TFT LCD is a full color display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels or 320 x 240 pixels depending on how it is oriented. It uses the ILI9341 controller with SPI interface. It also includes a resistive touchscreen with built-in XPT2046 controller.
The module power comes in on the Vcc pin. The module includes an on-board 3.3V regulator, so the module should normally be operated off of 3.6 to 5.5V power on this pin to feed the regulator. Current is typically 55-60mA
These modules are breadboard friendly with a 14-pin header on the back that can be inserted into a solderless breadboard or a 14-pin female connector can be used to connect to it if the display is to be mounted. The display is mounted on a stiff PCB that provides good support, but be sure to press on the header pins or PCB when applying pressure to insert them into a breadboard and not press on the glass to avoid possible damage.
Though these displays can seem to be a bit intimidating to use at first, just follow these steps to get up and running fairly easily. The pin labeling is on the back only, so we have pictures with the pins labeled on both the front and back to make life a little easier.
I’m also using the Teensy 4.1 because it is currently the fastest Arduino compatible board (600MHz 32-bit vs Uno 16MHz 16-bit) and this example application of calculating Mandelbrot fractals and updating the LCD can take a long time on an Uno (77-105 seconds) and only takes about 1.25 seconds on the Teensy 4.1. If using a 3.3V Arduino like a Due, hookup will basically be the same.
Connect the SPI and control lines for the display. In our example we are using hardware SPI as it gives the best performance. The SPI pin location will depend on the MCU you are using.
After drawing the first screen, it waits until the touchscreen is touched and then it zooms in slightly and redraws the screen. It also reports the touch location information out to the Serial Monitor window and also reports how long it took to calculate that screen. If you want to evolve the program as an exercise, it would be interesting to use the touch coordinates to center the new zoom.

… so [em]maybe [/em]that would give you an idea of the necessary pins (without touch). Brett would have actual hands-on experience though…And maybe the module has totally different pin use…so this may not be helpful in the least, lol.
