This summer, the University is partnering with Daktronics to provide light-emitting diode (LED) displays for Sun Bowl Stadium and the Don Haskins Center. Sun Bowl Stadium will receive four new LED displays and the Don Haskins Center will receive two. An additional marquee display will be installed outside the University Ticket Center, replacing the current light bulb display with a modern LED screen.

The additions include a new, end zone LED display measuring 34 feet by 60 feet, nearly quadrupling the area for digital display as compared to the current board. Fans in the stadium will enjoy a main screen that can divide into separate windows to show multiple types of data, statistics, graphics and animation, scoring information and sponsor advertisements. The LED technology will provide wide-angle visibility and excellent image clarity and contrast.

Two auxiliary displays also will be installed in the corners of the end zone with the main display. Measuring 6 feet by 90 feet, each display features a high-definition pixel layout. At the opposite end zone, a 4-foot by 96-foot ribbon display will provide supplemental game statistics, graphics and animation.

In addition to the new video displays, the stadium will receive a custom Daktronics audio system, which will be integrated with the video and scoring system to provide full-range sound reproduction capable of delivering clear and intelligible speech.

Inside the Don Haskins Center, two LED video displays measuring approximately 13 feet by 40 feet will be installed. Like the screens in Sun Bowl Stadium, the displays in the Don Haskins Center will be able to highlight one large image for live video and instant replays and also divide into separate windows to provide other game information, statistics and sponsor messages.

The Don Haskins Center will receive other equipment including locker room clocks, shot clocks, a backboard lighting kit and a Daktronics software interface capable of managing and displaying game, season and career statistics.

The new, larger video boards are designed to need minimal maintenance and to consume less power. Once completed, the end zone display in Sun Bowl Stadium will be the largest of any Conference USA football stadium.

Removal and salvage of the old video boards began Wednesday, May 28. Daktronics plans to finish the installation of the screens in Sun Bowl Stadium by late August, in anticipation of the UTEP vs. Texas Tech football game Sept. 6.

EL PASO – Over 2,000 UTEP Athletics items, primarily official team gear that has accumulated over the years, will go on sale to the public on Friday in the Northeast concourse of the Sun Bowl (adjacent to the Larry K. Durham Center main entrance).  UTEP Athletics" first-ever "garage sale" will start at 10 am and continue until 6 pm or when the inventory is gone.  The garage sale will precede the Miners" football spring game at 6 pm.

Running back Kevorian Barnes and the UTSA Roadrunners will seek their ninth consecutive win in the regular season finale against UTEP at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, at the Alamodome.

NOVEMBER 23, 2022 — The No. 25 UTSA Roadrunners look to become the first Conference USA team since 2017 to finish the regular season undefeated in conference competition, when they host the UTEP Miners at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, at the Alamodome. Saturday’s matchup is not only the regular season finale but also marks Senior Day and UTSA’s annual Fan Appreciation Game.

Although UTSA has already secured its spot in the conference championship game, the Roadrunners still have a lot to play for Saturday against UTEP. UTSA just entered the USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll at No. 25 and would very likely move up the rankings with another victory. This is crucial because UTSA still has a chance to play in a highly coveted New Year’s Six bowl game. After the conference championship games, the highest-ranked team from the “Group of Five” conferences earns the privilege to play in one of these six esteemed bowls, and UTSA is firmly in the mix alongside Tulane (9-2), Cincinnati (9-2), Coastal Carolina (9-1) and UCF (8-3).

UTEP (5-6 overall, 3-4 in C-USA) will also be highly motivated for Saturday’s game. The Miners must beat UTSA to become eligible for a postseason bowl game. UTEP is coming off its own impressive showing, defeating FIU 40-6 last Saturday in El Paso. The Miners are 1-4 in road games this year, so UTSA would benefit greatly from another loud, boisterous home-field advantage at the Alamodome.

Roadrunner fans of all ages can take part in free pre-game festivities at Rowdy Town, including live music, an inflatable obstacle course, interactive games, displays, food samples and beverages.

UTEP students and faculty from social work, clinical laboratory science and nursing will offer social services, blood pressure and blood glucose checks and screen participants for diabetes, anemia, foot ulcers and other conditions.

Started in 2016 as the H.O.P.E. (Health Opportunity Prevention Education) Health Fair at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless, UTEP’s H.O.P.E. initiative has provided free health services and health education resources to unsheltered and underinsured people in El Paso County. The health fair also enables UTEP health professions students to practice their skills and provide much-needed health screenings and social services before transitioning into the workforce.

“Tiny Tunnels, Big Connections: Ant Relationships Shape the World” is the latest installment at the University of Texasat El Paso (UTEP) Centennial Museum and theChihuahuanDesert Gardens. It was created thanks to a $166,000 grant that the UTEP Biodiversity Collections received from the National Science Foundation in 2017.

Tasked with counting, mapping, and inputting data for nearly 230,000 ants, Vicky Zhuang, exhibit curatorand collections manager at UTEPBiodiversity Collections, along with her students were able to input the data into a larger database known as theSymbiotaCollections of Arthropods Network (SCAN), which allows museums across North America to keep record of all the taxonomic specimens that they currently have, as well as the information associated with each individual specimen.

The ant specimens were courtesy of William Mackay, aformer UTEP professor of biological sciences and the curator of insects at the UTEP Biodiversity Collections. A portion of his collection—an estimated 500,000 ant specimens thanks to over half a century’swork—has now been incorporated into the exhibit.

The exhibit on display involvesmultiple collaborations. It includesenlarged 3D models of popular ant species in the region, courtesy of the El Paso Community College (EPCC) 3D print center and the W. M. Keck Center of 3D Innovation. The 3D models were sculpted directly from the likeness of the ants themselves viaMicroCTscans fromEconomoLab in Okinawa, Japan, and the Lucky Lab at the University of Florida. The museum also commissioned Augment El Paso, a digital art company that incorporates augmentedreality into traditional printed media and text. Through the Augment El Paso app, the viewer can scan a specific area of the exhibit and watch text and images come to life in real-time on their cell phone or tablet screen.

Briones also stressed the goal of incorporating a hands-on learning component that is friendly toward kids, an element that is reminiscent of the now-defunct Insights Science Museum that stood in Downtown El Paso formore than30 years until it was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Southwest University Park baseball stadium. It existed as an interactive science museum full of hands-on activities and displaysfor children in El Paso to visit.
