I have an icommand for my 2014 Etec 150 HO, the LCD screen is severely sun damaged to the point where I can"t see the display on it, can slightly make out some numbers on the outer edges but that"s it. I"ve seen some people offering repairs online for these but can"t seem to find any info on how to DIY the LCD repairs. Anyone do this or have any insight into it? Finding it difficult to even find a replacement for it in the event that I have to do that, which is making me think the DIY route might make sense.

I investigated my landline phone to repare its LCD according to this good tutorial, unfortunatly I found the cutted connection is not on the main PCB board but on the flat connector itself... and any heat applied (soldering tentative...) to the flat is going do destroid it completly ((

Very good interesting piece. I am no way shape or form of an electronics junkie , but i am more like a jack of all trades and a master of none type. I have a dual power TS-100 hand held calculator where the second digit was pixelated I would say. I googled how to repair it and seen your story. I took my calculator apart and the back side is where that glue strip is at. I could not find my heat gun, thanks to having to move it for the Christmas tree setup. I used my Kitchen Propane stove front burner and waived it over it a few times. It took a few tries but I finally was able to get the dead pixel back. One good thing is the calculator was on so in between heat ups and eraser rubbings I could see my progress and man your fix really worked. Thanks fro the story. My favorite pocket calculator is fixed once again. I wish I would have taken before and after photos, but was too giddy to try your repair idea.0

Google offers no link as to how to open an AEG Voxtel D235 handset. After opening the battery compartment and removing batteries and the two Philips screws at the bottom, the upper half refuses to budge. Is there a method for opening the upper part, to access the LCD screen connector for repair? Any suggestions appreciated.0

I just got my CM921 to work - so, carefully unplug or remove the lcd unit from the circuit board (8 pins i think) then separate the white board (same size as the lcd) from the back of the lcd display (it was glued on one side and i used a scalpel) the lcd will then flip over and you can see the ribbon, then follow the instructions above, return the lcd back down on top of the little white board as before and plug it back in...0

There may be a thin conductive rubber strip between the glass of the display & the board it is attached to. Over time this rubber can leak an insulating compound onto the interface connection that can, at times, be removed by removing the strip and gently rubbing it with a clean soft eraser. Be gentle as it can be fragile & easily damaged. This was an effective repair in the early days of these displays.0

If the picture responds to input but displays a messy image, such as jumbled multicolored squares, the AV (audio visual) board may be damaged. This is usually a rectangular circuit board located near the audio and visual cables. Replace obviously damaged parts using a soldering iron, or order a replacement board and carefully install it to the same screws and ribbon cables.

Check input cables for damage, or try other cables of the same type. If necessary, inspect the circuit board they are attached to and re-solder damaged connections.

I inadvertently left my hand-held GPS unit in my car on the dashboard near the windshield. It was there about five hours in the middle of the day and in the sun. When I picked up the unit, it was hot to the touch. When I turned it on, there were heavy black parallel horizontal lines across different sections of the screen. These lines stayed there regardless what different screen I selected. What happened, and can I correct it?

You did not say what brand or model of GPS you had, but it probably is a unit that uses a liquid crystal display (LCD) to configure and produce the images on the viewing screens. LCD units are most susceptible to outside heat.LCD units have very small crystals made into the screen to produce the total overall image. Depending on the temperature and particular nature of a substance, liquid crystals can be in one of several distinct phases.

One feature of liquid crystals is that electric current affects them. A particular sort of liquid crystal, called twisted nematics, (TN), is naturally twisted. Applying an electric current to these liquid crystals will untwist them to varying degrees, depending on the current’s voltage. LCDs use these liquid crystals because they react predictably to electric current in such a way as to control light passage.

A very small electrical current is directed to each individual crystal. It is used to produce a shade different from the background. The electrical current produces a very small amount of heat, and causes the individual LCD to change its reflective ability, and appears darker. A group or series of these crystals with different shades make up the lettering and images that you see on the screen.

You may have noted what the owner manual listed as an operating range for the unit. It is probably somewhere between 0º and 160º. Evidently the heat accumulated in your unit was above that range while it was on your dashboard in the sun. The heat buildup caused the LCDs to react to the heat, causing them to turn dark. The LCD crystals may have been damaged. Unfortunately, the lines may be permanent.

I had it happen to me one day when fishing in the heat of July. I was fishing at a particular location for over two hours. When I looked at the unit, there were black lines across the face of the display; some were internment. I immediately turned the unit off, dampened a cloth in ice water and placed it over the unit for an hour and, with my fingers crossed, turned the unit back on. Fortunately, I caught the problem before it became permanent. When the unit “rebooted,” the screen was normal. I was lucky.

You may try leaving the unit off and place it in a cool environment for a few days. Then reboot and see if the lines are still there. If they are, the only remedy is a trip to the manufacture’s repair facility.

This outside heat problem is why most “marine” GPS units are manufactured with a silver, white or light-colored case. The lighter colors do not absorb the sun’s heat as would a dark color.

Newer units use an improved type of display. Some of the new-model GPS, depth-finders, radios and cell phones use a Film Compensated Super Twisted Nematic (FSTN) crystal. It too, however, is sensitive to excessive heat and cold, but appears to be an improvement over the LCDs.

This type of crystal provides a better contrast, but is also more costly. The major benefit is the improved contrast ratio, and it is not quite as sensitive to outside heat sources. The contrast ratio is better than the LCD, in that it offers a much-lighter color background and darker pixels.

Effects of direct sun-light exposure to Touchscreen equipped Liquid Crystal Display monitors and mitigation techniquesIntroductionLiquid crystal, at room temperature, is neither a liquid nor a solid. This state allows liquid crystal to be usable as a light controlling device – i.e.: Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). However, liquid crystal can be adversely affected by temperature changes causing undesirable results. Low temperature environments can cause the crystal to transition more to a solid thus causing the crystal to be less responsive to changes needed to properly control light. In a LCD this can be observed as slow transition time from frame to frame (choppy video or memory of previous image). Higher temperature environments cause the liquid crystal to transition more to a liquid state, again causing the crystal to not perform correctly when controlling light. This effect can be seen in an LCD as a lowering of contrast ratio (darkening) or in extreme heat conditions melting the crystal resulting in a completely dark LCD image. Direct sun-light exposure typically does not cause LCD to internally heat enough to reach the liquid crystal’s melting point. However, touch monitors have a glass overlay and air barrier on top of the LCD. This can cause a greenhouse effect causing the air temperature between the touch sensor and LCD to become much hotter than the ambient temperature.Preventive measures

Orientation: The easiest way to prevent thermal heating by the sun is of course to not expose the LCD to direct sunlight. In many cases simply orienting the face of the LCD monitor in an East/West position will prevent the greenhouse effect and darkening of the LCD.

Covering or awning: If orientation cannot be controlled and the design allows for it, a simple shade can be employed to block direct sun light. The shade can be a protective awning overhead, or a cover that lies over the screen prompting the user to open or remove the covering to use the device.

Touch Technology choices: Touch sensor design varies based on the given technology. Technologies such as APR and SAW are based on glass only technologies. Resistive and Capacitive technologies have coatings which block some light transmission in both directions. In theory, touch sensors with coatings would slow the greenhouse effect by blocking a percentage of entering light thus slowing the LCD darkening. Touch sensors such as Infra-Red and Optical have no boundaries on the substrates; thus films, coatings or substraight material itself can be adjusted to block additional light.

Films and Coatings: Films designed to block light can be applied to some touchscreen technologies to slow the greenhouse effect. APR, resistive, capacitive, Infra-Red, and Optical all would be candidates for addition of films. The below experiment shows the results of three APR screens with various films and no film applied.

TestingTesting was performed on three Elo ESY15B1-APR products, outdoors in direct sunlight for 4-hours. A white background was displayed and a burn-in was test running to load the processor.

Note: The product with NU405RA film also appeared clearer in normal conditions than the one without a film applied, however the touchscreen was a little more difficult to activate with the shield verses without the shield.

Note: The beginning luminance readings of the product with NU405RA film applied were higher than the no film control. This may explain the appearance of a brighter screen with film applied.
