The original Game Boy is a classic. Sure, it had no backlight, but there is something special about playing on that classic green screen. Unfortunately, some of these older systems are suffering a terrible fate — screen burn. Game Boy’s played best with lots of light — especially out in the sun. But that same sun did terrible things to the screen. A black splotch in the center of the LCD is the telltale sign of a burned Game Boy. You might think that screen replacement is the only option, but[The Retro Future] shows us how to repair this issue.

A reflective LCD is a layer cake made up of polarizers, two panes of glass, and a reflector. The burns often seen on Game Boy screens usually are in the polarizer and the optically clear glue which attaches the plastic polarizer to the glass. We’re guessing these burns happen when someone leaves their Game Boy out in the sun. Between the sun rays directly striking the top polarizer and the rays bounced back from the reflector at the rear of the screen, that poor polarizer doesn’t stand a chance.

Repairing the burn is a delicate operation, as one false move could crack the thin LCD glass. The first step is to carefully peel off the burned polarizer. This leaves a mess of dried glue, which can be scraped off or dissolved with alcohol. A new linear polarizer can then be placed on the front of the screen. [The Retro Future] chose not to glue the polarizer, but we’re betting some UV cure LOCA (Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive) from a cell phone screen protector would do the trick.

If the picture responds to input but displays a messy image, such as jumbled multicolored squares, the AV (audio visual) board may be damaged. This is usually a rectangular circuit board located near the audio and visual cables. Replace obviously damaged parts using a soldering iron, or order a replacement board and carefully install it to the same screws and ribbon cables.

Check input cables for damage, or try other cables of the same type. If necessary, inspect the circuit board they are attached to and re-solder damaged connections.

Sun is the biggest enemy of LCD displays. It will cause them to heat up, discolor, and eventually turn black. The sun hits the display surface with 1250 watts/m2 of energy, which will cause the temperature of the Liquid Crystal cell to increase significantly, even on the coldest of days. This can have the effect of literally causing the Liquid Crystals to boil and turn black, what is known as solar clearing.

We have all probably seen our phones turn off because they are “too hot” and need to cool down before use, but outdoor displays don’t have the luxury of taking a break when they are too hot. QSRs, media companies, and transit stations rely on the display being on and visible no matter what the ambient conditions are. Keeping LCDs cool is critically important to providing a 24/7 use in all environments, where temperature fluctuates and direct sunlight is always an issue.

LCDs have very low reflection and absorb almost 98% of the solar energy. This means that viewing an LCD outdoors works great because of the low reflection, but keeping it cool is the biggest challenge.

LG-MRI’s patented CoolVu® technology is designed to provide a consistent visual image in direct sunlight and in temperatures up to 50oC with no loss in image quality. The innovative technology begins by using computational fluid dynamics to model the internal temperature of the LCD, LCM, media player, and circuit boards over a 15 year period in real world solar and temperature scenarios. Before we build a product, we ensure that it will perform up to spec in the real world for a 10 year period. The CoolVu® feature uses a dual loop cooling system that immediately exhausts out the heat from the sun and never lets it have an effect on increasing the heat within the unit. Since this heat is exhausted from the onset, we never have to worry about heat buildup from the sun, which lowers our energy consumption and allows us to more comfortably run all of our internal components without the worry of overheating them. CoolVu® is also unique in that zero outside air flows over any electronics or optics within the display. All critical internal components of the LG-MRI displays remain cool, dry, and contaminate free (absolutely clean for life). As an added bonus, all of this is accomplished without the use of air-filters, completely eliminating a common requirement for periodic maintenance found in competitive products.

I order a brand-new LCD-Unit or Digitizer along with the adhesive tape (already cut out in the right dimensions) off a wholesaler, clean the frame with 99% alcohol and Q-tips or microfibre cloth and install the new screen onto the frame.

Turn the panel over so that you"re working on the front of the panel. Place the panel on a book or the edge of the table, so that the pins hang over the edge and don"t get damaged while you"re working on the panel.

Use the razor blade to trim the film to the left and right sides and the bottom of the panel. If the film hangs over the top of the viewable area of the panel, that"s fine, but do not try to trim it from the top side, as the IC and conductive traces are easily damaged.

-If you crack LCD screens and find the liquid crystal leakage, don’t panic. Just remember that the liquid crystal materials might not be more toxic than your detergents for stove or washroom. Just wash your hands with soup throughout. Never try to play with it or even worse to taste it. The liquid of the cracked computer screen will not evaporate, no emissions worries.

-Any electronics has environment impact and can’t be used landfills. If you want to get rid of old LCD monitors or LCD TVs, give them to electronic collection stations. Let’s the professionals to handle them. They will extract some precious metals/parts and make them into something useful or at least not hazard. FYI, liquid crystal materials are retrievable.

I have a 2006 Prius that needs a new MFD because it is sun damaged. (This reminds me of how headlights yellow from the sun.) It is too dark to easily read, but everything works. Is there a way to repair the screen? Can the plastic screen be replaced, leaving the rest of the unit intact?

If not, where have you purchased your replacement MFD from? Anyone sell these on their website? Or, who do you recommend on ebay? How mjch should this cost? I would prefer to repair the plastic screen if this can be done since everything works.

But, if I have to buy a used MFD I want to buy it with someone with a sales history on priuschat.com. The 2006 Prius has a backup camera, but no navigation. Can you tell me the part number that I need to get? I already replaced the multimeter and I don"t want to take the MFD out again until I make the repair.
