When the screen goes dark try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check for images on the screen. They will be very faint if they are there at all.

Use it to gain access to the screen so that you can check if the flex cable connections are OK. The smaller cable is for the screen’s backlight power supply.

Not sure where the sensor is but from the image in the manual it may be to the right side of the evf screen (see oval shape in image) and to the left of the monitor button.

If that doesn"t fix it, with the EVF setting back to ON, can you turn on the LCD screen when it is off, by pressing the monitor button -see image above for location?

If so you could either leave the setting on and use the monitor button when you want the LCD display or set the setting to off and have a permanent LCD display although it may be preferable to have the LCD display off if not actually using the camera at the time even though camera is on so to speak, so as to prolong the battery as the evf will use less power than the LCD screen.
