just to recap quickly: one day I turned on my laptop and there was a big nasty crack down the screen running from the top in a jagged line across to the side. the machine was never dropped, hit or abused in any way, so to anyone out there who doubts that this kind of thing can just happen... well, it can.

anyway, after taking the machine to an authorised repair centre, instead of contacting apple for a warranty repair as I"d asked them to do, they just sent me a quote to replace the screen at a cost of around 950€. now, if I"d dropped my computer, or some accident had happened to it, I would have just had to swallow it and accept that this is how things go. but seeing as nothing like that had ever happened, it"s a little harder to come around to thinking you are going to have to shell out for something that obviously was defective and snapped all of its own accord. the repair centre suggested that if I wasn"t happy with the quote I should take it up directly with apple..

so there you go, I was obviously quite happy with this and at the risk of sounding like a fanboy broken record, the apple consultants I spoke with were pretty decent and reasonable about the whole thing.

This exact same thing happened to me I used the macbook at 7am in the morning, it sat on my couch without anyone home or in contact with it. I came back to it 2.5 hours later, opened it to find the lcd broken and 1/5 of my screen black with lines running thorugh it and with what looks like 2 hairline cracks in the bottom left corner in an area that is impossible to come in contact with from dropping or anything other than jabbing with a stick...or something absurd!

I jwaited a week to get in to see someone for an appointment at the Genius Bar to be told this is accidental damage and not covered by the warranty or Apple Care.The macbook is a refurbished product, purchased through the apple website and I have had it for 5 months. I am beyond unhappy with this entire experience. I am expected to pay out of pocket for repairs, which cost 1/3 of waht I paid for the item 5 months ago new. I am only led to assume the product was defective when purchased. My other macbooks have lived long lives of up to 5 years this is the first time I have experienced such a disappointment with regards to apple customer service.

While most screen repairs do not require any difference in service, there are a couple of scenarios that come up once in a while with LCD-only replacements on MacBook Airs.

When something hits the MacBook Air screen from the back or very hard, sometimes the backlight sheets get damaged as well as the LCD. The backlight LED’s shine up from the bottom of the laptop and reflect off a white sheet of paper-like substance. There are additional sheets after this white sheet that diffuse the backlight and spread it evenly through the LCD panel.

Normally, we can just replace the LCD and any backlight issues are purely cosmetic. As you can see in the picture below, a damaged backlight usually causes white spots on the LCD. Normally this white spot is only where the impact point is.

So if the computer got hit from the back or front hard enough to damage the backlight, we can either replace the entire screen assembly for a possible additional fee or just replace the LCD and ignore the cosmetic white spot. I cracked my spiffy new Macbook Air screen when I shut it, not realizing part of the charger cord was on the keyboard, and it immediately broke (note: be *really* careful closing the Airs!! A single grain of rice can kill your screen).

The law firm Bursor and Fisher filed a class action lawsuit against Apple this week over unusually common screen cracks on M1 MacBooks, reports 9to5Mac. The firm is accusing Apple of knowingly selling laptops with fragile displays that tend to crack under normal use in some cases and then refusing to repair them without charge. Bursor and Fisher is now seeking compensation for all expenses associated with repairs.

While Apple"s latest 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks based on the M1 system-on-chip received great reviews and made many owners happy on launch, there is also a large number of customers who have experienced unexpected screen cracks and were forced to pay $600 ~ $850 to Apple for repairs. Apple insists that screen cracks were not its fault, but were caused by mishandling or by a small item or particle becoming lodged between the keyboard and screen.

Last week, class action law firm Migliaccio & Rathod LLP said it had begun looking for owners of Apple"s latest MacBooks with cracked LCDs to make "potential legal claims against" the company. Apparently, lawyers from Bursor & Fisher were quicker, so they filed the case 5:21-cv-07109, Almeida v. Apple this week.

"The M1 MacBook is defective, as the screens are extraordinarily fragile, cracking, blacking out, or showing magenta, purple and blue lines and squares, or otherwise ceasing to function altogether," the lawsuit reads.

Truth to be told, Apple issued a notice on August 27(opens in new tab) asking owners of MacBooks not to use any camera covers, palm rest covers, or keyboard covers with their laptops because "the clearance between the display (screen) and the top case is engineered to tight tolerances [which is why] leaving any material on your display, keyboard, or palm rest might interfere with the display when it"s closed and cause damage to your display."

That plaintiff wants Apple to compensate the cost of repairs for himself and other people with similar problems as well as award "reasonable attorney"s fees and costs." But screen repairs are very costly, just like lawyers in the U.S. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Apple will admit the issue and what the plaintiff and people similarly situated will get from the "Think different" company.
