Description:Here"s a very cool TFT LCD display with 128 x 160 resolution and 18-bit color depth. The most unique feature of the screen is the ability to read back the display memory across the bi-directional data lines. This solves a big problem with most displays - the need for a lot of memory to create effects like transparency or overlapping windows. This is an ideal component to include in your next custom project to advance your embedded hardware/software skills.

The reason that we"re reselling this part rather than using it on a new product is because of a misunderstanding about the interface details. It uses a 3-wire SPI interface with 9-bit transfers. The first bit is used to indicate if the following byte is data or a command. While 9-bit transfers are supported by many modern microcontrollers (like the K66 or STM32 families), making that work with vanilla Arduino is unlikely to happen any time soon. Since SparkFun products need out-of-the-box support for Arduino the interface had to be restricted to bit-banging - just too slow for a display with this resolution!

So we"re handing off this cool part to people willing to stretch their comfort level and move beyond basic Arduino functionality. Using a modern microcontroller of your choice and taking advantage of 9-bit SPI transfers - or a full parallel bus - you can unlock the full power of this display. Not only are we giving this to you at the cost you"d expect from a manufacturer but we"re passing along some of the work we"ve done so far: You can find the mating FPC connector here and some SW/HW work in the documents tab.

A TFT display is a form of Liquid Crystal Display with thin film transistors for controlling the image formation. The TFT technology works by controlling brightness in red, green and blue sub-pixels through transistors for each pixel on the screen.

There are many display technologies, but do you know which one would be better for your application? Particularly when considering optimum viewing angle and contrast. We discuss 2 of the best options.

Compare IPS vs TFT displays - the TFT display is the display of choice for industrial designs, but it can have its limitations. A newer technology called IPS (in plane switching) offers better viewing angles and colours, but is it really the best choice - we discuss benefits and negatives of both types of TFT display.

In this guide we’re going to show you how you can use the 1.8 TFT display with the Arduino. You’ll learn how to wire the display, write text, draw shapes and display images on the screen.

The 1.8 TFT is a colorful display with 128 x 160 color pixels. The display can load images from an SD card – it has an SD card slot at the back. The following figure shows the screen front and back view.

This module uses SPI communication – see the wiring below . To control the display we’ll use the TFT library, which is already included with Arduino IDE 1.0.5 and later.

The TFT display communicates with the Arduino via SPI communication, so you need to include the SPI library on your code. We also use the TFT library to write and draw on the display.

In which “Hello, World!” is the text you want to display and the (x, y) coordinate is the location where you want to start display text on the screen.

The 1.8 TFT display can load images from the SD card. To read from the SD card you use the SD library, already included in the Arduino IDE software. Follow the next steps to display an image on the display:

Note: some people find issues with this display when trying to read from the SD card. We don’t know why that happens. In fact, we tested a couple of times and it worked well, and then, when we were about to record to show you the final result, the display didn’t recognized the SD card anymore – we’re not sure if it’s a problem with the SD card holder that doesn’t establish a proper connection with the SD card. However, we are sure these instructions work, because we’ve tested them.

In this guide we’ve shown you how to use the 1.8 TFT display with the Arduino: display text, draw shapes and display images. You can easily add a nice visual interface to your projects using this display.

Mono TFT models are featured with very high contrast while comparing with the monochrome STN displays. The DFSTN displays have the good black background with white character performance, but people might find the purplish background phenomenon.

The monochrome TFT display is a very good solution instead to replace the DFSTN. It has high contrast ratio, wide viewing angle, and built in controller with MCU interface; so the customer can use regular micro processor to drive it. Most importantly, the prices for some modules are better than STN.

The monochrome TFT normally is with TN positive or black VA LCD, but applied in the active matrix TFT, which allows for high contrast (800:1 or 900:1) and short response time. In short, the mono TFT display performance is much better on contrast, brightness and response time than traditional monochrome LCD module. The Mono TFT displays usually do not need an extended controller board to drive MCU control. The displays can operate in mode 2, 4 or 16 shades of gray scale, depending on the settings. Because the display driver supports several communication modes : 3 - or 4-line serial interface and an 8 -bit parallel interface compatible with standard systems with 8080 or 6800 family, the desired mode is selected by user to choose appropriate interface to control the device system.

It is a special technology, not like common color TFT, monochrome TFT has a very good contrast radio. Monochrome TFT-LCD is an ideal high performance display for automotive and industrial applications where there may be fewer requirements for full color. Driving this display is less complex yet monochrome TFT sill offers the same performance characteristics as full color TFT.

A TFT LCD display module consists of LCD panel, COG (chip on glass) or COB (chip on board) ,driver ICs, backlight and interface. There are several TFT display interface technologies. Including LVDS, (low voltage difference signal) parallel, SPI (serial peripheral interface) RGB and so on. The following is an introduction to various interfaces.

The serial peripheral interface allows serial (one bit at a time) data exchange between two devices. Compared with parallel, one of its advantages is simple connection. SPI can also be connected to longer cables because there is less interaction or crosstalk in the cables. The disadvantage of SPI is that you cannot read from the TFT LCD display, only write, and the speed is very slow. This is why we usually see small size TFT LCD displays with SPI interface.

Many modern MCUs have built-in LCD controller functions, and there are 2 types, 6800 and 8080. Usually MCU/parallel interface is composed of data signal (4/8/9/16 bit) and control signal. The MCU interface is simple, but requires display RAM.

The RGB interface is a special parallel interface that does not require display RAM. The MCU directly updates the TFT screen and sends red, green and blue pixel data (16/18/24 bits) and time signals. The RBG interface can communicate with TFT LCD with high speed , but it requires more data lines and control is more complicated.

low-voltage differential signal is a special data signal standard. LVDS interface equipment can communicate at high speed through cheap twisted-pair copper-clad cables, which can reduce electromagnetic interference and serial interference problems, transmission equipment location It can be far away from the TFT LCD display.

The Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) is the circuit area responsible for serial communication. In essence, UART plays the role of serial and The medium between parallel interfaces, one end of the UART is a bus composed of about 8 data lines (plus some control pins), and the other end is two serial lines-RX and TX.

High-definition multimedia interface is a definition of connectors and cables. It can support high-quality and high-bandwidth video and audio streaming between devices.

When choosing a TFT LCD interface, in addition to considering the technical parameters, the target use environment and bandwidth are also two major factors. We have been producing TFT LCD for more than 10 years. Our TFT LCD module covers all interfaces, and we will definitely give you the most suitable TFT LCD display for your project.
