The company has decided to focus on manufacturing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and quantum dot (QD) displays, as OLED panels have started to become the norm in the smartphone market.
A recent Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) revealed that the price of an LCD is 36.6 per cent of what it used to be in January 2014, the component"s peak production period.
No investment plan details have since been announced, and the employees of the LCD business are expected to be transferred to the QD business, the report said.
Samsung Display had decided to close its LCD business in late 2020, but the plans were delayed at Samsung Electronics" request due to a sudden increase in the prices of LCD panels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A few India-based enterprises have decided or plan to set up display panel plants in India, but this is unlikely to have substantially impact on the existing global display supply chain in the foreseeable future, as the total panel production capacity in India will be much smaller than that in China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
India-based oil, gas and metal producer Vedanta has acquired Japan-based LCD glass substrate maker AvanStrate and applied to the India government for setting up a 8.6G TFT-LCD plant in India. Vedanta in February 2022 signed an MoU with Taiwan-based Foxconn Electronics to establish a joint-venture maker of semiconductors. As Taiwan-based LCD panel maker Innolux is AvanStrate"s client and has a 8.6G LCD plant in southern Taiwan, Vedanta could cooperate with Innolux via AvanStrate.
With subsidies under India government"s PLI scheme and UP Electronics Manufacturing Policy 2017 set by the state government of Uttar Pradesh, northern India, Samsung Display (SDC) invested US$654 million to set up a panel module factory in the state and started production in April 2021.
Although Samsung is expanding its production in India, clustering and production of its South Korea-based supply chain makers in India are currently much smaller than those in Vietnam.
China-based panel maker China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) has invested INR18.3 billion to set up a factory to produce 5- to 65-inch LCD modules in Andhra Pradseh, southeastern India. With annual production capacity of 8.0 million LCD modules, the factory is intended to mainly support TCL, CSOT"s parent company, to sell LCD TVs in the India market. TCL expects to sell 10 million LCD TVs for a market share of 7% in India in 2022. TCL currently ranks fourth in the India TV market and aims to surpass Sony, ranking third with a market share of 12% at present, by the end of 2022.
Taiwan-based LCD panel maker AU Optronics (AUO) has evaluated the feasibility of investing in India. There are problems concerning culture and government efficiency in India, AUO chairman Paul Peng has said.
Supply chains are indeed gradually shifting from concentrated production in a few places to distributed production in multiple locations, Peng indicated, adding that distributed production carries risks such as more complicated management for supply chains and increases in production cost.
There are many factors that need to be considered in setting up overseas factories, including ecosystem support, infrastructure and local talent, Peng said. India is not ideal in terms of these three factors, and exiting panel makers are quite unlikely to set up panel lines in India for the time being, Peng noted.
China-based panel makers had kept expanding production capacities for nearly 10 years and, as a result they together occupied over 60% of global production capacity for LCD panels as of 2021, followed by Taiwanese makers with 20%, South Korean ones with 10% and Japanese ones with 6%.
Since major Chinese makers are still expanding LCD panel production capacities, China"s combined share of global total will reach 70% in the mid- to long-term.
In view of diminishing competitiveness in LCD, SDC terminated LCD panel production in June 2022 and has shifted focus to AMOLED. Taiwanese LCD panel makers are expected to benefit from SDC"s exit but are still far less competitive against Chinese fellow makers in production capacity. Therefore, they have chosen not to expand production capacities and have focused on high value-added LCD panels.
Based on Omdia’s Large Area Display Price Tracker, April 2021, Sanju Khatri, director of consulting for displays, ProAV and consumer devices at research and consultancy firm Omdia, provided some analysis on disruption in the display supply chain due to component shortage and high demand. Impact will be mostly felt on LCD technology, as strong demand and component shortage will lead to the following price cycles for LCD panels.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Three distinct terms are used below. Components (display driver IC, glass, and polarizer); panel (raw LCD panels) and brands/finished sets/device vendors (TV, monitor/laptops/ProAV vendors).
Strong consumer demand for TVs/IT displays. The “at home” trends are including work at home, learn at home, entertain at home and shop at home. The LCD TV, Notebook, LCD monitor, and tablet PC products continue to have the strong demand thanks to the “at home” trends.
Display panel makers are increasing prices sharply to take the fast turnaround on profitability. The LCD TV open cell prices have been increasing by 40%-50% from June 2020 to December 2020. And it is expected there will be another 20% increase from January 2021 to May 2021.
Component shortage(Glass substrate, Display Driver IC, T-con, PMIC, Polarizer films) are frustrating the supply chain from time to time, making the set makers to be more nervous thus giving more orders. Three display components are especially tight in 2021, represented by “P.I.G.”
P: Polarizer, protective/release films and surface treatment capacity are in tightness due to the production bottleneck and the retreat of the makers. However, the polarizer shortage is viewed as a short term as the long-term polarizer supply is sufficient.
I: IC, Display Driver IC supply is expected to loosen from 2H21however, limited foundry capacity and allocation competition with other IC applications may continue to complicate display panel shipments into the future. Even with the incremental display driver IC wafer foundry in the second half of 2021 (2H21), it is possible the wafer capacity allocation will be shifting to other IC applications.
Introduction: Global LCD industry shift and automotive intelligence together to promote the rapid development of China’s LCD panel industry, which will bring a continuous increase in demand for backlight modules, China’s backlight module industry has greater potential for development.
LCD panel backlight module consists of a backlight light source, light guide, optical film, and a plastic frame, which is an important component of LCD display panel. As the backlight module has technology-intensive and labor-intensive attributes, with abundant high-skilled labor advantage China is attracting the global LCD panel industry to the domestic rapid transfer.
From LCD application to the present, the global LCD panel industry capacity transfer has gone through three periods, 2000 Japan dominated the global LCD industry; 2000 – 2010, Japan’s production capacity to South Korea and Taiwan; 2010 to the present, Japanese manufacturers gradually withdraw from the LCD panel industry, production capacity began to transfer to mainland China, so far, mainland China LCD production capacity has occupied the global half of the world.
In recent years, South Korea’s Samsung and LG display will shift their business focus to OLED, and will gradually shut down their LCD production lines and withdraw from the LCD panel industry; at the time of South Korean manufacturers’ withdrawal, domestic enterprises are stepping up new construction to expand LCD production capacity.
BOE, Huaxing photoelectric, Huike, CEC in 2020 – 2021, a total of eight 7 generation LCD production lines completed and put into operation, and domestic panel manufacturers have further expansion plans, the next few years domestic LCD production capacity will continue to increase.
LCD panel manufacturers tend to choose the nearby supporting module suppliers for the safety of the key component supply chain and cost reduction considerations. LCD panel production capacity transfer to China will bring opportunities to domestic backlight module manufacturers and drive the development of the domestic backlight module industry.
The future of the car will pay more attention to the human driving experience, to the intelligent development, which will bring the increasing demand for car display. On the one hand, the number of car displays gradually increased, for example, the instrument panel, rearview mirror, central control platform more to display the way, the passenger and rear position with entertainment display. On the other hand, the car display is constantly to a large screen, multi-screen development, especially in high-end models, the large display has become standard, for example, Tesla Model S screen size of 17 inches, Mercedes-Benz A-class car configuration of two 10.5-inch display.
According to the terminal application size, backlight module can be divided into large, medium, and small size, of which small size backlight module is mainly used in smartphones, wearable devices, and other terminals, the medium size used in notebook computers, tablet PCs, car screens and other terminals, the large size is mainly used in LCD TV.

China has become the world"s largest LCD panel manufacturing base and is investing in a complete Mini/Micro-LED industry chain. Li Leiguang, JW Insights" chief analyst of the display industry, shared this information at a Mini/Micro-LED industry forum held in Shenzhen in late October.

China had long depended on imports of IC and display screens in the manufacturing of display products. IC and display screens are the two pillar sectors of the ICT Industry. The trend has been changing. With the continuous increase of high-generation production lines and capacity of domestic panel manufacturers and the gradual closure of LCD production lines by South Korean manufacturers, China"s LCD panel market share has increased year by year.
In 2020, China achieved a trade surplus in LCD panels for the first time. Meanwhile, the TFT-LCD has become a mainstream choice in the display panel industry after nearly 30 years of development.
JW Insights data shows that China has invested a total of RMB1.2 trillion($187.56 billion) in TFT-LCD and AMOLED panel production lines; Some 50 TFT-LCD and AMOLED panel production lines have been built, with 197 million m2/year TFT-LCD production capacity, 8.9 million m2/year AMOLED production capacity.
China"s LCD production capacity accounted for 50% of the global production capacity in 2020, becoming the world"s largest LCD panel production center; It will reach more than 75% of the world"s total by 2025.
China"s mainland is currently the only region that maintains continuous growth in LCD panel production capacity. With Japanese and South Korean manufacturers gradually withdrawing from the LCD panel, China is becoming the dominant player.
Chinese domestic display panel manufacturers are also embracing new display technologies such as Mini LED, Mirco LED, OLED and Micro OLED (silicon-based OLED), which are in an explosive market growth phase.
Unlike LCD technology that originated overseas, China has kept pace with the world in Mini/Micro-LED and has established a relatively complete industrial chain in it. Currently, the Mini LED is mainly used for LCD panel backlighting; It will be an inevitable trend for the direct LED display with Mini LED in large-screen in the future.
However, TFT-LCD technology will remain the mainstay for a long time in the future, because of its maturity and competitive prices. Multiple display technologies will coexist in the future; Micro-LED panels mass production will not be achieved in the short term.
The automotive industry has always been very conservative in the semiconductors it uses, often ten or 15-year-old technology. This approach makes sense in modern cars, which are complex systems with over 100 integrated circuits and voltages from 12 volts upwards that would not be kind to leading-edge semis. Therefore any chip in the vehicle that fails could cause a trip to the dealership. Add to that complexity the many years the industry has been refining "just-in-time" supply chain management.
In this context, the global consumer electronics market where LCD is located is affected in many ways. First of all, due to the pull of the economy, purchasing power can still remain strong, especially the commercial and education market demand in the North American market will remain relatively strong. There is also a downside. Due to the promotion of consumer demand in the early stage, especially the resident assistance policy, the phenomenon of demand overdraft has already occurred, and consumer demand will be affected by demand overdraft, and the future trend is not optimistic.
From the perspective of LCD panel shipment performance, according to the shipment performance of the four major mainstream LCD applications such as TV, Monitor, Notebook, and Mobile in 2021, it shows the characteristics of “weak at both ends and strong in the middle”. Looking forward to 2022, the shipments of LCD for mobile phones are expected to remain relatively stable, while the shipments of large-size LCD panel applications such as Notebook, Monitor, and TV have experienced a year-on-year decline of varying degrees due to the fading dividends of the epidemic, but the shipment area of large-size panels has performed significantly better than performance in terms of shipments. From the perspective of notebook LCD shipment performance, it is expected that the shipment area in 2022 will decrease by 3.8% year on year, and the decline in the area is lower than the decline in quantity. The shipment area of Monitor and TV panels can still maintain relatively good growth. The area growth brought about by large size is still the most effective way for LCD panel manufacturers to reduce production capacity.
Among large-size LCD applications, TV panels are the absolute main force in reducing production capacity. From the perspective of the shipment area in the first three quarters of 2021, TV panel shipments account for more than 70% of all application panel shipments. In the future, it is expected that the global display panel market will still exhibit cyclical fluctuations, and TV panels will still undertake the important task of reducing production capacity. Since the second half of 2020, the LCD panel price, especially the increase in the price of large-size panels, has driven the profitability of LCD manufacturers to improve significantly. At present, manufacturers are still in a period of high profitability. Of course, it cannot be ignored that the price of large-size panels continues to decline. It is expected to face profit challenges in 2022. The profitability of LCD manufacturers will face differentiation, and some manufacturers may fall into loss expectations.
From the perspective of production capacity investment, investment in the global display panel market will show two characteristics: first, the pace of investment in new LCD lines by panel manufacturers has slowed down significantly; second, investment in OLED will remain active, but the direction of investment in OLED will change. Significant changes occurred.
First of all, it turns out that panel manufacturers are very active in investing in small-sized OLEDs, especially flexible OLEDs. The future investment strategy will shift from small-sized to medium-to-large-sized, and from low-generation (6th generation) to mid-to-high-generation lines. According to statistics, it is expected that three 8.5-generation OLED production lines will usher in mass production by 2025. At the same time, the change of OLED investment direction will also change from the original Flexible OLED to multi-technology, WOLED will continue to expand production, and QD-OLED production capacity will continue to increase. At present, panel manufacturers represented by Korean factories(SAMSUNG & LG) are very active in investing in Hybrid OLED. Statistics show that it is expected that the global OLED display panel production area will continue to grow by more than 10% by 2025, especially with the gradual mass production of high-generation OLED production lines. It is expected that QD-OLED and Hybrid OLED will play an increasingly important role in the global OLED panel market from 2023.
Although the investment pace of panel manufacturers in LCD panels has slowed down, Chinese panel manufacturers still maintain a positive strategy for the expansion of existing production lines. The expansion of production will also drive the continuous growth of the supply area of LCD panels. According to statistics, it is expected that the global display panel production capacity will reach a high-speed growth of 12% year-on-year in 2022, and the overall production capacity growth rate will reach the largest increase since 2013. Therefore, it can be predicted that the pressure on panel manufacturers to reduce production capacity in 2022 should not be underestimated.
How will the global display industry pattern evolve? In 2021, an obvious “one superpower, many strong” competition pattern has been formed. BOE maintains a very clear leading edge in all applications. The market share of each application market has exceeded 20% in terms of the number of shipments and shipment area, and the leading edge is obvious. There is an imbalance in other panel manufacturers. Most manufacturers have certain competitive advantages in some fields, but the overall competitiveness is still not strong. For example, TCL (CSOT) and HKC can maintain a market share of about 15% in the TV panel market. It cannot be ignored that the performance of the IT application panel and the Mobile application panel is still relatively weak. Under this competitive landscape, it is expected that Chinese panel manufacturers including TCL and HKC will adopt active strategies for LCD applications other than TV in the future, including the expansion of existing production lines, and strive for opportunities to increase investment in new production lines.
Let’s look at the evolution of the competitive landscape of OLED. At present, OLED technology, especially in mobile phone applications, has gradually gained popularity. According to statistics, the overall proportion of OLED in the global smartphone shipments will reach nearly 40% in 2021, and will continue to grow in the future. The proportion will be close to 50% before 2025. In particular, the penetration rate of flexible OLEDs in mobile phone applications has shown a trend of significant growth. In 2021, the overall proportion will reach 22%, and it is expected that this proportion will continue to increase to 33% by 2023. From the perspective of panel makers, currently, flexible OLEDs are still dominated by Korean factories. Samsung Display will account for more than 50% of the entire global flexible OLED market in 2021. Although it will shrink due to the increase in production capacity from Chinese panel makers, it will also shrink in 2022. But it will still maintain a share of about 50% in 2022. Chinese panel manufacturers are particularly active in capacity expansion, especially BOE, TCL, and Visionox are all actively deploying flexible OLEDs. It is expected that the market share in 2022 will increase significantly compared to 2021.
Changes in the panel supply pattern have a huge impact on the global display industry, and will inevitably bring about changes in the industrial chain cooperation model. Under the current competitive landscape and environmental background, the global display industry should pay special attention to the industry chain.
