This instructable provides the information needed for you to build a compact, touch screen, Infrared, remote-control unit that can be easily programmed with control codes cloned from your existing remotes.

I started this project for several reasons, the most significant being that the remote-control unit for my multimedia receiver is beginning to fail. Several of the heavily used buttons are intermittent and many of the receiver’s functions are only accessible by using the remote. Reason number two is that it takes three (3) remote-control units just to watch TV! The TV remote, cable box and sound system remotes are each required. Oh, not to overlook the DVD remote-controller so that would make four (4) remote units. Finally, I thought this would be an excellent project to learn a bit about Arduino micro controllers, writing a “Sketch” (the operational program) and how IR (InfraRed) remote-control units work, all new to me.

Fortunately, I found some excellent information that allowed successful completion of this project. The authors of the Arduino libraries used to compile the remote-control Sketch provide good background information that helped greatly in getting things to work correctly. My build has now been in constant use for several months.

The success of this project depends on remote-control protocols being supported by the Arduino IR2Lib library used to compile the sketch. The current version of the IR2Lib library seems to have support for a large number of equipment manufacturers but there is always the possibility that an IR remote-control device youhave is not supported. The authors of the library do have a technique for handling “raw” control data if there is no standard protocol support available but using this “raw” data technique is not within the scope of this Instructable.

The example “Dump” sketch provided with the IR2lib library should give a quick answer about support for YOURremotes. You may have to try 2 or 3 button presses to get a successful result. I suspect the IR (infrared) receiver is sensitive to electrical noise and, perhaps, ambient light.

Note-when pressing the button on your remote, do it firmly but quickly! It seems that some remotes send a special “repeat” code after the desired function code if the button is pressed for too long of a duration. This may cause “Unknown” protocol results.

Once you know the protocols used by your remotes are supported, you can continue with confidence that you will have a successful project. If you only get a protocol type as “unknown”, well, it will take an adventurous individual to try and work with the “raw” data and is, perhaps, the topic for a new Instructable but not within the scope of this project. The IR2lib library does provide examples and instructional information about using "raw" IR codes.

I have tried to provide thorough documentation with many diagrams, photos and lots of comments within the Sketch (program code) but this project might be quite a challenge for a beginner. I recommend reviewing the steps that follow and read through the Sketch (bp_remote.ino) since the comments in the Sketch provide a lot of information.

An assembly drawing for this circuit shows where to place the components on a typical perf-board. Also provided is the artwork to make your own PCB (printed circuit board) if you choose. There are several sources for information about making a PCB at home. Several “Instructables” (do a search for “PCB” within the “Circuits” group) as well as many on-line videos such asthis video and others offer techniques for getting the job done. Do an on-line search for “how to make a PCB at home”. Of course, the PCB approach is optional. Point to point wiring on a perf-board will work nicely if the provided layout is used. ESP chips can generate various kinds of timings that needed by common LCDs on the market, like SPI LCD, I80 LCD (a.k.a Intel 8080 parallel LCD), RGB/SRGB LCD, I2C LCD, etc. The esp_lcd component is officially to support those LCDs with a group of universal APIs across chips.

In esp_lcd, an LCD panel is represented by esp_lcd_panel_handle_t, which plays the role of an abstract frame buffer, regardless of the frame memory is allocated inside ESP chip or in external LCD controller. Based on the location of the frame buffer and the hardware connection interface, the LCD panel drivers are mainly grouped into the following categories:

Controller based LCD driver involves multiple steps to get a panel handle, like bus allocation, IO device registration and controller driver install. The frame buffer is located in the controller’s internal GRAM (Graphical RAM). ESP-IDF provides only a limited number of LCD controller drivers out of the box (e.g. ST7789, SSD1306), More Controller Based LCD Drivers are maintained in the Espressif Component Registry _.

LCD Panel IO Operations - provides a set of APIs to operate the LCD panel, like turning on/off the display, setting the orientation, etc. These operations are common for either controller-based LCD panel driver or RGB LCD panel driver.

esp_lcd_panel_io_spi_config_t::dc_gpio_num: Sets the gpio number for the DC signal line (some LCD calls this RS line). The LCD driver will use this GPIO to switch between sending command and sending data.

Plenty of home theater and entertainment devices come with a remote control. Usually, the remote can only operate one device. Some TV remote controls can control other devices within the same brand. For example, most LG, Samsung, and Sony TV remotes can control Blu-ray Disc players of the same brand.

The types of devices that a universal remote can control include TVs, CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc players, home theater receivers, soundbars, cable and satellite boxes, video game consoles, and streaming devices, such as Roku and Apple TV.

Additionally, most universal remotes require you to press buttons. However, some feature a touchscreen, like on a smartphone. A growing number of universal remotes provide access to and control of smart TV features.

For a universal remote to operate different brands and device models, it needs to be programmed to recognize the device it will control. Universal remotes incorporate one or more of the following programming features:

Pre-programmed (also called multi-brand): These remotes can be used with a limited number of devices from select product brands without further programming.

Learning: The remote learns the remote control commands of other remotes by pointing a universal remote and a dedicated device remote at each other and programming each command one-at-a-time.

In addition to programming, a universal remote control needs to communicate commands to a target device. This can be done using one or more of the following methods:

IR: This is a common method that remotes use to control devices. Each time you touch a button on the remote, it sends a series of infrared light pulses to a sensor located on the front of the TV or other device. The device executes the command. This requires a clear line-of-sight between the remote and the device. If that isn"t possible, place accessories such as an IR repeater or IR extender between the remote and the target device, retransmitting the pulses using its IR beam or electrically via a cable connected to an IR sensor input connection.

RF: As a solution to the line-of-sight limitation, some universal remotes incorporate an RF (radio frequency) transmitter. This allows you to control devices that are placed inside cabinets or otherwise obstructed. Not many controllable devices have RF receivers that can be used with an RF remote. One solution is to transmit the RF commands to an external RF receiver, with the receiver resending the signal in infrared from the receiver to the device. For additional flexibility, many RF remotes incorporate an infrared option.

Wi-Fi: If a universal remote control incorporates Wi-Fi, you can control some smart devices through a home network. Using a variety of apps, this type of remote can control both device functions and content access, such as streaming audio and video. This feature is commonly available with smartphones in conjunction with Wi-Fi supported TVs, home theater receivers, or hubs that receive Wi-Fi signals and relay the command information via IR to the device. Some remote controls can also perform groups of tasks (referred to as macros or activities).
