LG Display saw a decrease in panel shipments in the fourth quarter due to worsening macroeconomic conditions, as set makers’ inventory adjustments further impacted demand in the high-end product sector which had been solid.

The company recorded a quarter-on-quarter increase in revenues by 8% thanks to increased panel shipments for mobile devices, while reporting an operating loss due to a continuous decline in mid-sized panel prices and a high-intensity action plan of utilization adjustment to decrease inventory.

Panels for TVs accounted for 25% of revenues in the fourth quarter, while panels for IT devices including monitors, laptops and tablet PCs accounted for 34%, panels for mobile and other devices accounted for 34%, and those for automobiles accounted for 7%.

LG Display will make all-out efforts to improve the financial structure by strengthening its operations focusing on market-to-order business in response to market volatility and economic uncertainty.

With respect to the market-to-order business which now accounts for 30% of its revenue, LG Display will expand its share in revenue by over 40% in 2023 and 50% in 2024 to establish a stable profit structure resilient to market conditions. In addition, the company will further strengthen its position in the automotive display sector and continue to lead the mid-sized OLED market including tablet PCs, as the rise in smartphone panel shipments in the second half of 2023 is expected to add positive fuel to its efforts to enhance its market-to-order business.

After the company’s decision to end its LCD TV panel production in Korea, LG Display"s large-sized OLED business was evaluated by an external institution and divided into separate cash-generating unit in accordance with related accounting standards and objective procedures. The company’s large-sized OLED business was reflected KRW 1,331 billion as asset impairment loss after calculated by an external institution, causing the net loss to expand. Considering it occurred only in the financial statement without actually affecting business operations, it is in turn expected to remove possible uncertainties in the company’s businesses in the future.

For its large-sized OLED business, LG Display will further strengthen its profit structure by improving competitiveness in products and costs while concentrating continuously on qualitative growth. In addition, the company will make efforts to enhance its market position by further improving its fundamental competitiveness with its OLED technology, as well as expanding its market-creating business with high growth potential such as Transparent and Gaming OLED panels.

LG Display will also secure financial soundness by minimizing its investment such as investing only in essential and market-to-order businesses, while maintaining its inventory at the minimum level and flexibly adjusting production accordingly.

“Our preemptive move to reduce the company’s inventory in the fourth quarter is expected to improve our performance down the road, and the quarterly result is also expected to improve as we continue to intensely reduce our costs,” said Sung-hyun Kim, CFO and Senior Vice President at LG Display.

If you have two 4Ks that are the same size and were made in the same year, but one costs significantly more than the other, it boils down to picture quality and specifically the technology being used to put the colors on the screen. All 4K TVs have the same number of pixels (3840 x 2160), but the difference in picture quality comes from how they are lit. The best 4K displays are the ones that have the most control over each individual pixel, to light them up in different colors or even turn them off completely without affecting adjacent pixels of a different color. That’s where display technologies come in, and when it comes to 4K TVs, you’re either talking about LCD or OLED.

Above you’ll see two 4K TVs that are the same size (55-inches) and from the same year (2019), but at very different prices. The Vizio M-Series Quantum, which is one of the best affordable 4K TVs, costs less than $500. The LG B Series, one of the nicer OLED TVs, is over $1,000 more expensive.

The lesser of the two displays is the LCD (liquid crystal display). LCD TVs control the brightness of their picture with an LED backlight that covers a lot more space than a single pixel. Instead, they control groups or clusters of pixels that are known as dimming zones. The more dimming zones an LCD TV has, the more control it has over the pixels and the better picture it’s going to be able to produce.

The ultimate dimming zone, however, is a single pixel, and that is what an OLED TV delivers. Each pixel on an OLED screen is its own backlight. The result is that OLED TVs are able to get brighter and darker while in close proximity to each other, which generates much better contrast. Additionally, OLED TVs are generally able to be thinner and lighter than LCD TVs because they don’t require an extra panel of back-lighting. The problem is OLED is a newer technology and it will be responsible for the bulk of the price differential between two otherwise identical-looking TVs. One of LG’s 65-inch entry-level 4K OLED TVs costs $2,300, for example, while one of the company’s 65-inch 4K LCD TVs costs $650.

It’s not just OLED or LCD though. More expensive LCD TVs will shore up their display technology weakness with other technologies, like a brighter backlight, or a larger number of smaller dimming zones. More expensive TVs will often also boast a higher refresh rate, the number of times per second that the screen updates what it is showing. Higher rates mean a higher price, but less motion blur. Higher-end TVs are also more likely to support high dynamic range (HDR) technologies, such as Dolby Vision and HDR10, which help create deeper blacks and more vivid colors on any display.

And while you’ll basically always be better off using a soundbar instead of your TV’s built-in speakers, some of the more expensive TVs might have slightly bigger speakers that get slightly louder, have better sound separation and might even support surround sound technologies, like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. But many TV manufacturers (such as TCL, Sony, Vizio, Samsung and LG) actually want you to buy a separate soundbar or speaker system because they make those as well. And for our money, that’s a good choice.

Just days into the new year, we already have a good idea of what TV shoppers can expect in 2023. It starts with more LCD sets that use Mini LEDs in their backlights; some developments to boost brightness in OLED TVs, which traditionally have topped our TV ratings; and more TV brands offering sets with screens 85 inches and even larger.

This year, both Samsung and LG (which is sticking with its WOLED tech) say they’ve found new ways to make their OLED TVs brighter, pushing them to levels we’ve typically only seen from the brightest LCD/LED TVs.

In LCD/LED TVs, most of the new sets being built with Mini LEDs are mid-tier or flagship models. (One exception is Hisense; see below.) With this technology, companies cram thousands of tiny LEDs into the backlights behind their LCD panels, then divide the LEDs into zones that can be dimmed or illuminated individually. Because each zone is so small, they can be controlled very precisely to help improve brightness, contrast, and black levels, and help reduce the halos you often see on LCD TVs when a bright image appears against a dark background.

The new “ultimate” LCD/LED TV, ULED X, comes with some major claims in both brightness—up to 2,500 nits—and state-of-the-art Mini LED technology, with over 20,000 Mini LED lights and more than 5,000 local dimming zones. It has a new AI processor, along with a 16-bit “light control” algorithm, which is supposed to provide more precise control over local dimming zones. The set includes a newly developed “CineStage X” 4.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos audio system. The first set will be available only in an 85-inch screen size; price and availability weren’t disclosed.

LG will manage a now-familiar balancing act, touting improved performance in its LCD lineup while continuing to promote its OLED TVs as the pinnacle of TV performance. But at CES it was clear that OLED TVs are occupying the bulk of the company’s TV attention, with some interesting new designs.

Like last year, the company’s flagship TVs will be pricey Z-series (Z3) 8K OLED sets, offered in 77- and 88-inch screen sizes. As in the past, the most advanced 4K OLED tech will go into the company’s design-focused Gallery, or G-series, sets. However, LG’s C3 series lineup, which has typically offered the best bang for the buck of any LG OLED TVs, also gets many improvements.

Once again, both the G3 and C2 sets get the high-performing Evo OLED panels and the company’s most advanced AI processors, which help up-convert lower-resolution content. These panels use a new algorithm and light-control architecture to boost brightness by up to 70 percent in the G3 sets, which can hit 1,800 nits, the company says. The G3 sets have an additional brightness booster feature the C3 sets lack. Last year, both sets were among the best TVs we tested.

LG didn’t have a lot to say about its LCD/LED TV lineup, which we assume will be revealed closer to launch, but this year only the top-tier QNED 85-series models, in 55- to 86-inch screen sizes, get Mini LED backlights. (The QNED80- and QNED75-series sets will have more conventional local dimming.)

Most LG customers will get one of these more conventional TVs, but the two new TV types mentioned earlier were really eye-catching at the show. The flexible 42-inch OLED TV, called OLED Flex, can be bent into a curve using the remote for immersive gaming or kept flat for TVs and movies. It has 20 different levels of curvature. This set is actually available now, for about $2,500, obviously quite expensive for a TV this size.

For those who dream a bit bigger, LG will have a 97-inch wireless OLED TV that can send 4K 120Hz video and audio to the TV using proprietary wireless technology. Called the Signature OLED M TV, it comes with a Zero Connect box that houses all the connections, sending signals to the TV without wires from up to 30 feet away. In a demo we saw, the signal wasn’t disrupted when someone walked between the box and the TV set.

Of course, Samsung is also making improvements to its top-tier Neo QLED TVs, which are quantum dot sets that use Mini LED backlights. Without getting too technical, Samsung says it’s improving brightness and contrast by increasing the number of dimming zones in the Mini LED backlight, with better algorithms for controlling them.

In addition to the XLED Mini LED sets, Sharp will also have both LCD/LED and OLED TVs that use the Roku smart TV system. So far, no information has been released about the LCD/LED sets other than that they’ll be offered in 50-, 55-, 65-, and 75-inch screen sizes.

As for Sony’s LCD/LED TV Lineup, last year the two top series—the Z9K and X95K—got Mini LED backlights plus Backlight Master Drive technology Sony claims can offer more control over the Mini LEDs than conventional methods. We’ll have to wait to see if Sony rolls out Mini LED backlights in more models in 2023.

The new Q series will focus on bigger and better QLED models, starting with the Q6 sets, which will be brighter than last year’s entry-level QLED models. Available in screen sizes from 50 to 75 inches, these will be 60Hz sets that feature 120Hz processing (called Game Accelerator 120) for VRR gaming. Stepping up to the Q7 sets gets you higher peak brightness, more local dimming zones than last year’s QLED sets, and a native 120Hz panel, with up to 240Hz Game Accelerator VRR. The sets, which feature IMAX Enhanced certification for the first time, will be available in 55- to 85-inch screen sizes.

The Hisense U8H matches the excellent brightness and color performance of much pricier LCD TVs, and its Google TV smart platform is a welcome addition. But it’s available in only three screen sizes.

The Hisense U8H is the best LCD/LED TV for most people because it delivers the performance of a much pricier TV yet starts at under $1,000, for the smallest (55-inch) screen size. This TV utilizes quantum dots, a full-array backlight with mini-LEDs, and a 120 Hz refresh rate to deliver a great-looking 4K HDR image. It’s compatible with every major HDR format. And it’s equipped with two full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs to support 4K 120 Hz gaming from the newest Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Add in the intuitive, fully featured Google TV smart-TV platform, and the U8H’s price-to-performance ratio is of inarguable value.

The U8H’s brightness, black-level integrity, and local-dimming abilities make this an excellent TV for watching HDR content. The U8H is capable of playing HDR content in all of the major formats (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG), but when it comes to impressive HDR, what’s under the hood is much more important than format compatibility. The most crucial thing for good HDR is high brightness and deep color saturation, and the U8H’s quantum dots achieve the latter. It’s not as simple as just having quantum dots, however: While many TVs (even the budget options) have quantum dots nowadays, what is often not taken into account is that brightness directly affects color saturation. For example, both the 2022 TCL 6-Series and the Hisense U8H are equipped with quantum dots, mini-LED backlights, and local dimming. But because the U8H is notably brighter than the 6-Series, it also achieves a higher total color volume. During our color-volume testing, the U8H exhibited color ranges at more than 100% of the DCI-P3 color space (the range of color needed to properly display HDR content), and it is capable of roughly 10% more total color volume compared with the 6-Series.

In terms of design, the Hisense U8H is not as svelte as our upgrade pick, but it’s plenty sturdy and doesn’t look or feel cheap. Two narrow, metal feet jut out from beneath the panel and steadily hold the TV. They can be attached in two separate spots, either closer in toward the middle of the panel or out toward the edges, to account for different-size TV stands. The feet are also equipped with cable organization clasps—a nice touch for keeping your TV stand free of cable clutter. Though the TV is primarily plastic, its bezels are lined with metal strips, providing a bit more durability in the long run. I moved it around my home, and it was no worse for wear, but we’ll know more after doing some long-term testing.

The Hisense U8H has some difficulties with banding, or areas of uneven gradation, where transitions that should appear smooth instead look like “bands” of color (sometimes also called posterization). Like many current 4K HDR TVs, the U8H uses an 8-bit panel rather than a 10-bit panel, which affects the color decoding and color presentation process. This is usually relevant only with HDR video and games. When playing games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I saw a few instances where the content wasn’t rendered correctly and displayed ugly splotches of color on the screen. However, this almost always occurred during static screens (such as a pause menu or loading screen); I rarely spotted it during actual gameplay. Hisense has stated that it would address the problem in a future firmware update, but at the time of writing it was still present. This is a flaw that may give dedicated gamers pause, but we don’t consider it to be a dealbreaker for most people.

Finally, like most TVs that use vertical alignment (VA) LCD panels, the U8H has a limited horizontal viewing angle, which may be a bit annoying if you’re hoping to entertain a large crowd. Our upgrade pick uses a special wide-angle technology to address this.

LG began shipping its first 2012 models this month. LG has not provided a MAP (minimum advertised price) list to the press, so we’ve consulted our industry contacts to put together a menu of the models shipping over the next eight weeks.

We learned a number of new models currently have special promotions, either $100 instant rebates, a free Blu-ray player or a free LG sound bar with subwoofer and extra 3D glass, depending on the model. These programs a scheduled to expire March 31, 2012.  The instant rebates are reflected in the posted prices and we’ve added links to the bundled specials.

Select Sony and Samsung 2012 models fall under new no discount, one price UPP policies. LG allows its sellers to set their own discounted prices for its entire HDTV line, so you may negotiate with your local dealer for a better deal. Check out our article here.

Huge price drops on OLED TVs towards the end of last year made it a fantastic time to buy – especially the LG C2, which cements its status as our number one pick, when combining image quality, features, size options and price.

The best OLED TVs on the market today deliver beautiful image quality because of the self-lighting pixels that define this kind of technology. What these pixels allow for is rich, precise contrast for HDR in a way that even the best LCD TVs can’t match. That means they deliver an incredible cinematic picture that brings you more detail in darker areas of the screen than you’ll ever get from an LCD TV.

With one of the best OLED TVs, many of which are among the best TVs on the market, you"ll also find a starker contrast between light and dark, which is similar to the laser projection in movie theaters – especially if you buy a larger TV, like one of the best 65-inch TVs or best 75-inch TVs. Big TV brands, like LG and Sony, use OLED tech in their premium TVs. Even Samsung, a TV company that’s been holding out on OLED, entered the OLED TV space earlier this year.

The LG C2 OLED is the best OLED TV for the majority of people. While the LG C1 OLED from 2021 is still a great TV, and the LG G2 and Z2 offer elevated experiences compared to the C2, we wholly believe that the C2 offers the best performance-to-dollar ratio and is the TV to beat even when the 2023 model starts to ship.

The LG C2 isn’t flawless, however. In our tests we found that off-axis color saturation does diminish a bit when you move to the left or right of the screen when compared to the new QD-OLED models. It"s also worth noting that LG doesn"t support either the IMAX Enhanced or HDR10+ format.

LG"s A2 series TVs are the firm"s cheapest OLED offerings, and while they"re not quite as feature-rich as their more expensive stablemates they still deliver a lot of TV for the money. LG"s OLED panels are wonderful things with superb color and contrast, and while the panel here isn"t as bright as the ones in more expensive LG TVs it"s still very good and very clear. It also has LG"s webOS smart TV operating system, which we think is the best in the business.

The A2 series is outfitted with LG’s α7 Gen 5 AI Processor, which first appeared in the company’s 2021 models and provides features such as dynamic tone mapping and 5.1.2-channel sound upmixing. The Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG high dynamic range formats are all supported by the A2 series, along with Dolby Vision IQ and HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group). Its Filmmaker mode delivers accurate color and motion settings, and also shuts off any automatic processing that would change the picture from the way a movie’s director originally intended for it to be presented.

If price isn"t a concern for you and you simply want the best OLED TV you can buy at any price point, then the LG G2 OLED is the TV for you. The OLED65G2 uses its extra brightness to make pretty much every frame of any source you care to mention look even more sublime than it has on any LG OLED before.

To anyone familiar with LG’s OLED TVs over the years, the impact made by the extra brightness the heat sink unlocks is instantly obvious: we found that the extra brightness gives colors more volume and punch, regardless of whether you’re talking about a very vibrant, rich tone, or a subtle, mild one.

A new wide color gamut panel for the A80K combines with Sony’s XR OLED Contrast Pro, XR Triluminos Pro, and Cognitive Processor XR features to deliver deep blacks and detailed shadows in images, along with rich, fully saturated colors. Overall picture brightness is satisfactory, if a bit below what you’ll get from the very best OLED TVs, such as the LG G2 and also the LG C2 series. Still, Sony’s mid-tier OLED manages to look great even in well-lit rooms, and it stuns in ones that are dimmed for best-quality movie viewing.

LG"s B-series TVs are among its more affordable models, offering a step up in specification from the even cheaper A series without massively increasing the price.

Inevitably some compromises have been made to get the price down, so the B2 doesn"t get the same bright panels as its more expensive siblings. However, it offers a decent specification for a very good price – including an excellent set of HDMI 2.1 gaming features including 120Hz, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), auto low latency mode (ALLM), and more.

It"s a tighter race than ever, then, though it"s worth assessing secondary characteristics for OLED and QLED screens. An OLED with a cheap processor may cause more artefacts and video noise (as we saw in the LG BX), while a QLED with edge-lighting (the Q60T) won"t get the true benefit of its enhanced color and contrast. Format or feature support can be crucial if you"re hooking up your TV to a PC, a games console, or a 4K Blu-ray player too. What is the lifespan of an OLED TV?According to LG Display, the makers of the OLED panels that go into every OLED TV on the list - around 100,000 hours. For most folks that"s about 10 years of TV watching and far exceeds the 40,000 to 60,000-hour lifespans of most LED-LCD TVs. That said, OLED TVs can experience something called burn-in when a static image is left on the screen for prolonged periods of time - so be sure to change the channel every few days.Best OLED TV competitors: what else is out there?OLED is, for many, the premium TV tech of the moment. Though once weighed down by inaccessible price points, a flurry of cheaper mid-range OLEDs and smaller panel sizes has helped bring OLED closer to the mass market. TCL"s own plans to manufacture its own inkjet OLED TV panels at a significant price reduction over traditional OLED production methods could spell trouble for the likes of LG and Panasonic too.

Samsung’s current TV lineup includes QD-OLED hybrids (they combine OLED panels with quantum dot tech, utilising the self-emissive properties of the former and color enhancements of the latter) in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes, and Sony is offering similar-sized sets that use the same tech. In our hands-on test of Sony’s A95K QD-OLED, we found that its high brightness and impressive color depth gave it an edge over standard OLED models, though the picture quality boost comes at extra cost. Is QD-OLED tech worth the higher price? We’ll weigh in on that after we get a TV in-hand for a full-scale review.

For those with cash to splash, you"ll be choosing between a high-end OLED TV and Micro LED – a self-emissive panel technology that Samsung has leant into in recent times, but which has proved difficult to offer either affordably or at mainstream sizing (76-inch is the smallest we"ve seen so far, as of 2021).

Just as Samsung did last week, LG is today sharing its official pricing for the company’s 2022 lineup of TVs. First up is the OLED family, which is comprised of several different series lines, including the G2 Gallery Edition, C2, B2, and A2 series. The G2 is the flagship and includes the brightest OLED TV panel that LG has produced yet, though the C2’s display is also getting a brightness boost over last year’s model. Both are being achieved with the help of increased processing power and “Brightness Booster” features.

LG says 2022’s 4K OLED lineup includes its widest range of screen sizes ever. At the smallest end is a new 42-inch C2, which has been priced at $1,399. LG envisions this being a popular choice for desktop gaming in addition to its TV chops. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit for the 42C2; it’s scheduled to ship in May, with most of the other sizes and models coming in either March or April. The C2 will be available in 83-, 77-, 65-, 55-, 48-, and 42-inch sizes.

At the opposite end of the size scale is the 97-inch G2 OLED, but LG isn’t ready to share pricing or availability on that giant just yet. The largest models of the G2 and C2 both have 83-inch screens and are priced at $6,499 and $5,499, respectively. The G2 Gallery Edition can be had with 97-, 83-, 77-, 65-, or 55-inch screens.

As a refresher, LG’s premium 2022 OLEDs continue to offer broad HDMI 2.1 support — all four ports are HDMI 2.1 and are now using the full 48Gbps pipeline — and the company has made some enhancements to its webOS software this year. LG has improved tone mapping and says the built-in speakers on this year’s sets should also sound better. But some TV makers like Samsung are offering 144Hz VRR in 2022, and that’s something LG hasn’t yet implemented. Here’s the breakdown in sizes and pricing:
