The HD Guru’s readers have asked for the real story on power line conditioners. Are they really needed with an HDTV? Do they provide a sharper picture as some salesmen claim? How well do they protect the TV in case of a lightening strike or other electrical spike? What about surge protectors and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)? The HD Guru responds.

In the United States the alternating current (AC) sent from your electric company should be delivered to your home at a steady rate of 120 volts at 60 cycles per second. In some parts of the US, there are variations, resulting in voltages that are either too high or too low. Sometimes interruptions cut the power altogether. Delivery of too much power is called a voltage surge; too little, a voltage droop or sag. Electrical storms can deliver lightening strikes, which can produce catastrophic voltage surges capable of destroying the power supplies of all the electronics plugged into the system, whether they’re powered up or not. Air conditioner and refrigerator motors powering on and off can also cause momentary voltage fluctuations. Another potential power problem is electrical interference caused by industrial grade electrical equipment operating nearby as would be found in a factory. Your home’s wiring may also pick up electrical line interference or radio frequency interference (RFI) caused by, among other things, broadcast transmitters located in your vicinity.

Fluctuating voltages can cause lights to brighten and dim. TV, lights and other electrical devices may momentarily shut off due to total voltage dropouts. Radio frequency interference can create hum and/or video noise bars and static.

Power conditioners can’t give your digital HDTV a sharper picture or better color, regardless of display technology, whether plasma, LCD, DLP, SXRD, or DILA rear projection. Period. Resolution is, by definition fixed, and so cannot be increased. If a salesman tells you otherwise, ask why are there no power conditioners connected to the dozens of TVs on display. All HDTVs have internal power supplies designed to filter and transform the incoming AC to voltages necessary for the set’s operational needs. These built-in power supplies do a great job, and are designed to accept a fairly wide range of line voltages. Can a power conditioner clean up heavy interference in your power line? Yes, but most of the time they are simply not necessary and will be of no use because the vast majority of households are free of electrical interference.

While power conditioners cannot improve your picture, a surge protector can protect your set in the event of a power surge. What’s needed depends on the display and the amount of protection you can afford. For LCDs and plasmas the HD Guru suggests a surge protector at the very minimum. According to experts, the rating should be at least 360 joules. These are very inexpensive, with prices starting at under $20. For lamp driven devices such as microdisplay front and rear projectors, including LCOS (Sony SXRD and JVC DiLA), DLP and LCD, you should purchase an uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). The HD Guru also recommends using the UPS with digital video recorders (DVRs like TiVo). A UPS will prevent the lamp’s cooling fan motor (or hard drive in the DVR) from shutting off during a power failure. You need just enough battery power to cool off the projector to prevent premature lamp failure or a DVR’s power down. 10 minutes worth of battery back up is more than sufficient. Virtually all UPS units also have built-in surge protection.

UPSs’ are either on-line or off-line designs. The on-lines are best because they actively filter and convert AC wall power into DC (Direct Current) to charge the battery, while simultaneously converting the DC back to AC to run your HDTV or DVR. In addition to offering excellent line conditioning, on-line UPS systems provide surge protection. Because it’s “on-line” there is no voltage drop when the AC power fails. The switch to battery backup is seamless.

The Tripp-Lite SU750XL is a good on-line UPS. Rated at 750VA, it will run a 500-watt load for about 10 minutes, which is plenty of time to cool off the lamp in any projector or properly shut down a TiVo. While it retails for $449, a quick internet search found it for $288.93 + shipping.

Depending upon capacity off-line UPS prices start at around $40. Because the AC in/out circuitry is not coupled to the output there’s around a 1-millisecond switch between line current and battery power. Virtually all have built-in surge protection and many of the mid size and larger one also have line conditioners.

Bottom line? Instead of selecting a line conditioner with surge protection, which can cost up to $500 or more, get first-rate protection that includes surge and battery backup plus top quality line conditioning, for under $300 by purchasing an on-line UPS. For under $100 you can be protected from the most common surge and short-term power loss problems with a UPS with surge protection combo.

When used in the first case to divert power around a portion of the unit, the bypass may be acting to protect the unit itself from extraordinary conditions or provide power downstream if a portion of the unit malfunctions or is temporarily inoperable. For example, if UPS batteries are drained and cannot provide power to the load, many UPSs go into “bypass mode,” providing raw, unconditioned power to the load so it can remain online. (See electronic bypass.)

When used to isolate a unit (generally used for larger units), a bypass made of circuit breakers or disconnect devices electronically isolate incoming and outgoing “sides” of the voltage regulator/power conditioner from the system. The unit can then be safely isolated for maintenance while downstream devices receive unconditioned power to remain online.

Some voltage regulator/power conditioners are capable of taking incoming power at one voltage level and providing it at a lower voltage level at the output (for example, from 480 volts to 208 volts). This ability to “step down” the voltage can eliminate the need for a separate transformer to change the voltage to the proper level for the downstream devices. In some cases, a “step up” might also be useful.

Troubleshooting a soundbar is a difficult endeavor. Most soundbars have a minimal number of controls and no display to tell you what is wrong. Because of this, troubleshooting soundbars often means a lot of trial and error. However, knowing what to try first can save you some time.

Most soundbar issues result from improper connection, an incorrect device setting, a poor physical arrangement. Most fixes are fairly simple, though some may require some time to troubleshoot. Try the simplest solutions first, and move up in complexity only if needed.

Your soundbar could work improperly for a host of different reasons. Below you’ll find nine of the most common issues users have with their soundbars. If you follow these troubleshooting instructions step by step, you should be able to fix what’s wrong while saving the most time and money.

Before you try any of these steps, you should always try a power cycle first. Unplugging your device and plugging it back in after about 15 seconds is the easiest troubleshooting step, which can solve a variety of problems.

Most power issues are fairly simple problems with equally simple solutions. The first thing you want to do is check if it is actually off. Usually, soundbars will have an indicator light of some kind indicating that they are powered on. Consult your manual to determine what this looks like on your device.

You may have to download the complete manual on your manufacturer’s website. If the indicator light is on, chances are you have a sound problem rather than a power problem.

If your soundbar is indeed not powering on, be sure to use the power button on the soundbar instead of the remote. If this works to turn on your soundbar, your remote’s battery, or the remote itself, may need to be replaced.

If you still don’t get power to your soundbar, check all the connections. Your soundbar needs to be connected both to a device sending sound to it as well as a power source. Check all outlets and ports to ensure that they are free of debris and securely connected, and ensure that there are no cut or damaged wires or cables in your setup.

If there are, try replacing these. You may be able to get a replacement power cable from the manufacturer, even if your soundbar is out of warranty (more on that below).

If your soundbar is powering on, but not producing any sound, check your volume settings. Try your remote first, but also try the volume controls on the soundbar itself if this doesn’t work. Also, be sure to check the volume settings on your source device. The volume of your source device should be set at the maximum and all volume control should be handled by the soundbar.

If you connect your soundbar to your source device with HDMI, you may be able to take advantage of a feature called HDMI CEC. Among other features, it enables you to have a universal volume control across all of your connected devices, as well as the ability to control it all with one remote.

If your connections appear secure, try a different cable to connect your soundbar to your device. This will eliminate the possibility of a faulty cable. If all else fails, try connecting an audio source through a different connection. If this doesn’t work, it may indicate internal damage to your soundbar.

The next category of common issues reflects a system that powers on and is functional but may have some performance issues. In addition to these troubleshooting steps, you can reference our guide on how to make a soundbar sound better in general for more tips here.

If you get sound, but it sounds like your TV’s sound, it probably is. Check your audio settings to ensure that your source device is routing sound to the soundbar. The easiest way to do this is to consult the manual for your source device and follow installation instructions connecting external audio devices.

If you’ve taken the above steps to fix your sound to no avail, you might have your soundbar in a special audio mode. Some soundbars come with night mode or dialogue-enhancement mode which modify the sound for specific uses.

Night mode is designed to reduce certain frequencies so as not to disturb people in adjacent rooms. Dialogue-enhancement mode amplifies higher-pitched frequencies and is good for watching the news and other highly narrated content.

However, when you enable either of these settings accidentally, it can make your content just sound weird. This is especially the case with movies that have powerful soundtracks. Consult your manual on how to disable these special sound modes.

If you still have trouble, it might mean that your source device is broadcasting a type of audio your soundbar can’t fully produce. This may be the case if your source device is broadcasting a 5.x surround sound signal to a 2.x or 3.x soundbar.

If this is the case, the rear channels which would usually fold into the left and right channels may drop out completely. Consult your soundbar manual and adjust your TV’s audio settings to match the speaker arrangement.

This problem can occur when your source device is connected directly to your soundbar which passes the video on to the TV. Many TV boxes, Sky boxes, and disc players have a feature to prevent this. In your box’s audio settings menu, you may find an “audio delay” feature. Adjust the audio delay until you are happy with the syncing.

The most likely culprit when it comes to unwanted sound is the cable. This is especially the case with analog audio. Check all connections to ensure they are fully inserted and secure.

Be sure that your source is set to maximum volume and you control the volume primarily with the soundbar. This helps because low input volume can be overwhelmed by interference which your soundbar will amplify along with the audio signal.

The mere position of a particular cable can create a loop that captures radio interference. One simple solution is moving or organizing your cables. Although this can be as simple as using rubber bands or twist ties, there are other accessories you can use to organize your cables like the JOTO Cable Management Sleeve (on Amazon).

If the connections you use are shielded, such as HDMI, you might want to consider upgrading your cables. Cheap cables may use poor shielding materials, allowing for interference.

Another possible cause of unwanted noise is “60 cycle hum” or “mains hum.” 60 cycle hum sounds like a constant low buzzing and is caused by nearby high-voltage currents. The most common sources are household wiring and fluorescent lighting.

This is usually solved by moving the soundbar. If your soundbar is mounted to your wall, take it off the mount and find an area on your wall where you do not get the hum, and reinstall the mount there.

If your soundbar repeatedly cuts off while you are watching content, it may be due to energy-saving settings. Since these settings may be beneficial both to the environment as well as the longevity of your device, you might want to keep them on if you can.

One thing that can trigger this behavior is poor volume calibration. Ensure that the volume of your source device is set to maximum. Since energy saver mode is sometimes triggered by a lack of audio signal (especially with analog connections), using maximum volume will minimize if not eliminate this problem. You should always control your volume with your output device whenever possible.

If this doesn’t fix your problems, you may want to disable energy-saving mode. If it fixes the problem, you likely won’t notice any difference otherwise.

Being unable to get sound from the subwoofer is especially frustrating since subwoofers can add a lot to a soundbar setup (our article). As always, check whether the subwoofer is powered on. Sometimes, the subwoofer may have its own power source you need to connect. Consult your manual for details.

If you still don’t get sound, check the connections. Ensure that wires are not damaged by swapping them out. If you are using a wireless connection, consult your manual to ensure the devices are properly paired.

If you are trying to connect to your soundbar with Bluetooth or WiFi, you may have difficulty with pairing. The most common cause is additional devices already paired. Consult your manual, and unpair your soundbar from all devices. This is usually as simple as turning off Bluetooth connectivity and turning it back on again.

If all else fails, you can try a factory reset. The process for doing this will differ from device to device, but it will restore your device to its factory settings. Consult your manual for instructions on how to do this.

If you have a new soundbar that is giving you issues, you should first determine whether it is eligible for your retailer’s return or exchange policy. The easiest way to fix persistent problems is to simply replace the soundbar.

If you bought it from a store, repackage the soundbar and its components to the best of your ability, and bring it to customer service or a manager to discuss an exchange. If you bought it online, do your best to talk to a customer service representative, preferably by phone.

Even if your soundbar is outside of the return or exchange period, it’s worth a shot to try calling anyway. If you are denied, you can politely plead your case, but understand that the person you are speaking to may not have the authority to alter company policy. If this is the case, you should determine if your device is under warranty.

If this is the case, follow the warranty instructions that come with your soundbar. It is important to do this before going to a repair shop, since it may void the warranty. You may be asked to return the soundbar to the manufacturer for repairs. If this is the case, inquire about the cost of shipping and repairs to avoid any surprise costs.

If your device is not under warranty according to your documentation, try contacting them anyway. Often manufacturers are more interested in retaining you as a loyal customer than saving what is to them a small amount of money on shipping and repairs.

Further, they may be able to connect you to other departments within the company or licensed repair shops that handle non-warranty repairs, probably at an expense.

If you are passed on to another company department from the warranty claims department, get an estimate and a quote for shipping and labor cost as well as the expected turnaround time.

Understand that until they are able to examine your soundbar, they will not be able to give you an accurate quote for labor time or necessary materials.

Ultimately, your particular priorities will determine which option you choose. If the repair tech identifies the problem as being unfixable, or if enough repair techs are unable to source the problem, you may want to consider selling it for parts.

Many repair techs and recycling companies will pay a small amount to gut your soundbar to repair for working parts and raw materials. It may not be much, but it can contribute to buying something that works.

One of the most common sources of confusion I encounter when talking to non-electrical people about solar power are the terms: kW and kWh. What do they stand for? What do they mean? And what’s the difference between the two? Watch the video, or read below to find out…

Please excuse this post if you think I am explaining the bleeding obvious! But I think it is vital to write a post that describes these key units of electricity in a way that requires zero prior knowledge of anything electricity-related.

So kW means kilowatt, which is 1000 Watts. It is a measure of power. Notice that, if you like to keep anal electrical engineers like me happy, the correct way to write it is always with a small k and a capital W. Peak power defines a solar system’s size. e.g. a 3 kW system can produce 3 kW of power at solar noon (when the sun is at its strongest) on a perfect solar day:

kWh stands for kilowatt-hour. A kWh is a measure of energy (not power). If your solar panels (for example) continuously output 1 kW of power for a whole 60 minutes, you will have produced 1 kWh of energy.  The amount of electricity you use (or generate) is defined in kWhs. e.g. “My solar system produced 4 kWh of electricity today!”

It is very common for people to mistakenly interchange the terms energy and power as if there is no difference. Most people do it all the time without noticing. It drives electrical geeks like me up the wall, especially when I read it in national newspapers and books!

If a buyer has studied their energy consumption and carelessly says they need a solar power system to produce 12 kW, they might end up being quoted a 12 kW solar power system, which will cost about $10,000 at today’s prices and produce about 48 kWh per day.

If what they actually meant was that they need one to cover an energy usage of 12 kWh per day, they really need a 3 kW solar system that costs about $3,500 at the time of writing!

The more energy (kWh) a battery has, the more you can store and the longer it will last, the more power it has the faster you can get that energy in or out of the battery,

In other words, the more power it has, the more appliances you can power with it and the more energy it has, the longer you can power those appliances.

Top tip for filtering out the worst solar and battery salesmen: Ask them to explain the difference between a kW and kWh. If they get this wrong how on earth are they gonna understand your requirements? A lot of cold calling door knockers will fail this test in my experience.

A kilowatt/hour is a nonsensical unit in most contexts. If you find yourself using this unit, double-check what you really mean, which is probably kilowatt-hour. Kilowatt/hour means kilowatts per hour. Kilowatt is a measure of power (units: Joules per second ), so you are really saying joules per second per second, or joules per second squared. Which would be a measure of how quickly power is increasing. An acceleration of power if you like. There are very few circumstances where that is a relevant measure. Especially when talking about solar or batteries. Lots of people get kilowatts/hour confused with kWh. Please don’t let it be you. 99% of the time, you’ll mean kWh.

For small/medium size televisions, LCD is clearly the choice for those of you with limited power. The other great news is that they are getting cheaper as time goes on. Coles and a number of supermarkets are now selling 38 cm LCD televisions for under AUS$200.

I say "if" because they are designed to run off a 230V-12V regulated power supply. This is not the same as running it direct from a 12V solar system where the battery voltage can easily range from 11 to 15 volts. An even wider variance is possible with flat or failing batteries; a battery system being equalised to 15.5-16 volts etc.

There appears to be a few brands that can definitely be run off a battery and these are marketed to the caravan and yachting market. Majestic LCD televisions will operate between 10.9 and 15.5 volts. Xien sell a range for the marine industry. Sharp televisions are also sold as "12 volts" but come with a $140 special 12 V lead. I suggest this has a power conditioner on it. Dick Smith once sold (and may still do so) an AC/DC 15 inch model.

Most people assume that all the brands would operate satisfactorily but we are unable to recommend this without information from the manufacturers. If any of you have information or experience in this regard, please let me know.

The power "saving" of being able to run it direct is significant. From my observations, the 230 to 12V adapter supplied with the television is only about 50% efficient. By the time you then use an inverter to change your 12V to 230V, I estimate that you could be tripling your power consumption.

For those of you on 24 volts, an efficient 24 to 12V converter is a reasonable option. I tested the 15" Music TV using our 8A voltage reducer (APX-006 - discontinued) and it used a modest 1 amp on 24 volts.

For the "big end of town", a consumer magazine tested 4 popular brands of large LCD and Plasma televisions for power consumption. Interestingly, the 45/ 46 inch Plasma televisions used 260 –286 watts while the 42/43 inch Plasma televisions used significantly less (183- 186 watts). All four used between 0.67 and 1.4 watts on stand by.
