In some cases a small piece of dust or other foreign material may appear to be a pixel anomaly. Apple strives to use the highest quality LCD panels in its products, however pixel anomalies can occur in a small percentage of panels.
In many cases pixel anomalies are caused by a piece of foreign material that is trapped somewhere in the display or on the front surface of the glass panel. Foreign material is typically irregular in shape and is usually most noticeable when viewed against a white background. Foreign material that is on the front surface of the glass panel can be easily removed using a lint free cloth. Foreign material that is trapped within the screen must be removed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store.

Conventional LCD screens offer bright, glossy images but consume too much power. The images they display are also not visible in sunlight. It"s one of the reasons electronic paper, a low-power black-and-white display that can be seen clearly outdoors during the day, has become a rage among e-book readers. Pixel Qi promises to bridge both worlds.
Pixel Qi’s 3Qi display operates in three modes: a full-color LCD transmissive mode; a low-power, sunlight-readable, reflective e-paper mode; and a transflective mode, which makes the LCD display visible in sunlight.
The company is currently producing displays in the 10-inch screen size. They will debut on netbooks. Last year, research firm ABI expected 35 million netbooks to be shipped. That makes it easier to predict demand for these devices and produce displays in large volumes for them, Jepsen says. By the end of the year, Pixel Qi"s screens are expected to be in e-readers and tablets.
An image on the display is composed of millions of individual pixels. Each pixel is divided into three sub-pixels: red, green and blue. Controlling the intensity of light available to each of these sub-pixels helps produce a color image.
Now, each of the subpixels are further divided into transmissive and reflective modes. In transmissive mode, the screen is primarily lit from the rear using a backlight. When the light reaches the LCD panel, it passes through polarizers that allow it to light up the required combination of subpixels.
The resultant reflected light is picked up by the eye. Pixel Qi"s full-color 10-inch screen has a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels. It almost feels like a conventional LCD display though the colors aren"t as saturated and the image isn"t as vivid.
At its peak, the Pixel Qi"s display consumes far less power than conventional LCDs. Peak power is 2.5 watts. Turn off the backlight and you can shave 2 watts off, giving you an extremely low-power display.
In the reflective mode, the backlight is turned off and the ambient light hits a layer of mirror on the display that reflects it back completely. The result is a much higher resolution than in the LCD mode and a screen that plays just off the grayscale rather than creating colors.
The Pixel 5 isn"t quite worth its high price, especially since its software support window ends soon (October 2023). Amazon currently sells the Pixel 4A 5G for the same price as the Pixel 6A, and while it"s a good phone, it should be cheaper. You"re better off sticking with the Pixel 6A. As for older Pixels, they"re not worth picking up. They"re just too old (and the Pixel 4 suffers from poor battery performance). Many of those devices will stop getting software updates soon if they haven"t already. Buy one of the newer models.
The revamped case for the Pixel 7 series feels more durable than ever before, and you can match them with your Pixel"s color. The thermoplastic elastomer feels nice to touch, and there are raised edges on the front to protect the screen. The Pixel 7"s case is made with more than 30 percent recycled plastics, and the polycarbonate shell uses 77 percent recycled plastics. There are metal buttons for power and volume and they"re 100 percent recycled aluminum. The cases for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6A are similar but slightly different.
This is hands-down the best case if you frequently attach your Pixel to the handlebar of a bike or electric scooter. Peak Design"s mounting system lets you magnetically affix the phone to its Universal Bike Mount ($50) and it stays put—after nearly a year of testing, I"ve yet to have a phone fall off my ride using this mounting system. It doesn"t interrupt the Pixel"s wireless charging either. The company has several other magnetic accessories you can use, like a car mount. The case itself is nice; I just wish the edges were raised a bit more for better screen protection.
This is one of the best clear cases you"ll find, especially at this price, for the Pixel. Pixel phones don"t have a great track record with screen durability—they scratch easily. We tested this protector originally for the Pixel 5A, but it"s not available anymore. Caseology does sell it now for the Pixel 7, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6A. Installation is easy, and it includes a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles. You get two screen protectors for the price, including a microfiber cloth, a wipe, and dust removal stickers.
This is another easy-to-apply tempered glass screen protector. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 version comes with two protectors, but Spigen only includes one for the Pixel 6A. Boo. You get a whole cleaning kit to wipe down your phone, an alignment tool that helps you get the application right, and a squeegee to get rid of the air bubbles.
You get only one screen protector here and it"s very expensive. That"s because Zagg claims that the protector is five times as strong as traditional screen protectors. I haven"t seen too many scuffs on my Pixel 6A yet, but take this with a grain of salt. It"s easy to apply with the included application tool, but Zagg doesn"t include a squeegee at this price so you"ll have to use your fingers to push the air bubbles out. It"s slim, has a nice texture, retains clicky buttons, and has accurate cutouts for the ports and speakers. What"s not to love? Well, it"s a bit dull, but I still think this case is one of the more attractive cases in Spigen"s lineup. The edges aren"t raised drastically, so don"t expect much screen protection.
Want a kickstand to prop your Pixel up? This Spigen case has one built in and it does the trick, though unfortunately, you can keep your device up only in landscape mode—not great for hands-free TikTok. The Pixels have great cameras, but you can take them further by using third-party lenses like these from Moment. Slap on a fish-eye lens for a fun, distorted photo effect. Use a 58-mm telephoto to get even closer to your subject. Whatever lens you pick, you"ll need a Moment case for the system to work. Unfortunately, the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 6A cases aren"t compatible with the lenses. Still, I like "em because they have magnets embedded inside—they"ll work with Moment"s various MagSafe mounts, like one for tripods, video lights, and mics.

If you spend long enough debating the merits of LCD vs. OLED display technologies, eventually, someone will touch upon the subject of the dreaded OLED screen burn in. The point made is that OLED displays will inevitably suffer from horrible-looking artifacts over time, while LCD and new technologies like Mini-LED won’t. But like most of these debates, you’ll probably hear as many overblown anecdotes as you will actual facts about the issue.
You may never have experienced it for yourself, but many consumers are wary about the possibility of burn in when pondering their next smartphone purchase. Particularly as expensive flagship smartphones have universally adopted OLED display technology. Apple, Google, and other manufacturers acknowledge that burn in can be a problem in rare cases. OLED technology has made its way to much more affordable price points in recent years, putting the issue on the radar for even more consumers.
The word “burn in” is a little misleading, as no actual burning or heat problems are involved. Instead, this term describes a display suffering from permanent discoloration across any part of the panel. This may take the form of a text or image outline, fading of colors, or other noticeable patches and patterns on display. The display still works as expected, but a somewhat noticeable ghost image or discoloration persists when the screen is on. To be considered screen burn in, these artifacts have to be permanent and are a defect caused on the display hardware side. Rather than a graphical glitch that may be caused by software, temporary image retention, or a problem with the display driver circuitry.
The term dates back to old CRT monitors, where phosphor compounds that emit light to produce images lost their luminance with time. LCD panels can exhibit similar problems, but these are much rarer due to the nature of LCD’s backlight and color matrix design.
Although not as bad or noticeable as old CRT issues, today’s OLED smartphone displays can eventually suffer from a similar problem. That being said, it’s pretty difficult and rare to notice unless you know what you’re looking for, and it takes hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of screen-on time before any such errors appear. In smartphones, pattern burn in is typically associated with always-on displays, navigation buttons, and the notification bar. The example below demonstrates a textbook case:
The cause of all screen burn in is the varying lifecycle of a display’s light-producing components. As these parts age, their brightness changes, and therefore the panel’s color reproduction gradually shifts with time. Although this can be mitigated somewhat with clever software, all displays experience some color shift as they age. But with burn in, some parts of the screen age faster than others. This can gradually shift the perceivable colors of the screen in one area more than in another, leaving what looks like a ghost image behind.
With modern smartphone and smartwatch technology, screen burn in can manifest due to the different life spans between the red, green, and blue LED subpixels used in OLED panels. As we mentioned before, areas of the display that seldom change, are bright white, or are often black and switched off, such as navigation buttons or the notification bar, are the most likely areas to notice this issue. You may also notice the effect in darkened status bars designed to hide display notches.
This is because these areas are more likely to consistently display one color, a set icon, or text. In contrast, the rest of the display produces a more random selection of colors from various websites, videos, apps, etc., over a long period of use. Therefore the subpixels in these areas see different amounts of use and thus age differently, eventually resulting in a slight variation in color reproduction. Switching to transparent and color-changing bars has the added bonus of evening out the color aging process.
Speaking more technically, the issue is that blue LEDs have significantly lower luminous efficiency than red or green pixels. This means that a blue LED needs to be driven at a higher current for a set sized pixel to achieve the same brightness as red or green. Higher current causes the pixel to degrade faster, shortening its lifespan and eventually tinting the display towards the red and green colors. Therefore an OLED display’s color doesn’t degrade evenly; it will ultimately lean towards a red/green tint.
So, if one part of the panel spends a lot of time displaying a blue or white image, the blue pixels in this area will degrade faster than in other areas. That’s essentially what burn in is. However, display manufacturers do account for this in their panel designs.
If OLED screens have a problem with burn in, why do we continue using them? Burn in is a true downside to OLED displays, but there are plenty of reasons consumers and manufacturers like them. For starters, image quality is much better than in LCDs. OLED panels can reproduce more vibrant colors, more contrast, wider viewing angles, and faster refresh rates. Colors tend to be much more saturated, and blacks are much darker.
OLED displays have a simpler design, allowing thinner, lighter smartphone designs. You can also thank OLED technology for foldable phones and curved displays. If those improvements weren’t enough, you’ll also enjoy lower power consumption with OLED.
Additionally, burn in problems are only common after prolonged periods of use. As you may already know, smartphone manufacturers don’t expect you to keep a smartphone for more than 2-3 years. Recent statistics show that consumers currently keep their phones for an average of 2.75 years.
At this stage, manufacturers are very aware of the potential issues and have already taken some intelligent steps to help avoid burn in. For starters, Samsung has been using its pentile subpixel arrangement in its AMOLED displays since the Galaxy S3. By making the blue subpixel larger, it requires less current to drive in order to provide the necessary light. Driving the LED with less current increases its lifespan, so it takes longer for any noticeable color shift to occur.
This doesn’t directly address the issue of different parts of the screen aging at different rates, but it does mean that it will take significantly longer to notice than with older or cheaper OLED panels. More expensive and modern OLED panels are built with longer-lasting LEDs and well-designed layouts, meaning flagship smartphone displays age slower. These days, it’s cheaper phones packing cheaper displays that are marginally more likely to see issues after heavy use.
There are software solutions too. Android Wear product manufacturers can enable the OS’s “burn protection” option. This mode periodically shifts the screen’s contents by a few pixels, so they spend equal time displaying different colors. Smartphones equipped with Always-On display technology employ a similar tactic. Google also suggests a selection of design guidelines tailored to avoid screen burn-in problems when designing OLED watches. The move towards gesture rather than on-screen navigation controls is also helping to alleviate one of the more noticeable burn in areas.
If your screen is already burnt in, there’s not much that can be done to undo the damage. Some apps on the Play Store claim to reverse the problem. These will end up “burning” the rest of the screen to match the colors, which isn’t a real solution.
Keep your display brightness as low as reasonable. Increased brightness requires more current and therefore shortens LED lifespans. Don’t crank up the brightness unless you have to.
All that said, screen burn in isn’t something that should concern many users if they’re looking to buy a new OLED smartphone. Modern panels have much longer lifespans than early OLED smartphones, and even then, burn in was rare. Just don’t leave a static image on the screen 24/7 with the brightness set at max.
The bottom line is that you should be looking at several years’ worth of use out of a modern smartphone display before any screen burn in will be noticeable. But it doesn’t hurt to be aware of what can happen to aging handsets and how to maximize their lifespan.

The biggest camera change you get with the Pixel 7 Pro is an improved zoom that is longer and has better image quality. Google made some behind-the-scenes improvements to the way the image sensor crops the scene when zooming. The Pixel 7 Pro also fuses data from the main and telephoto lenses when zooming between 2.5x and 5x for better clarity.
Both phones get a longer digital zoom range of 8x for the regular Pixel 7 and 30x for the 7 Pro that let you frame your subject tighter. Compare that to the 7x and 20x magnifications for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro respectively.

The Pixel 5 falls into a sort of middle ground that makes the question of whether it"s time to upgrade a difficult one to answer. The Pixel 7"s changes are dramatic enough to make a noticeable difference, particularly when it comes to the design and camera. But the Pixel 5 is also new enough to feel fast and relevant for at least another year or two.

There are several other smaller changes that come together to make the Pixel 7 generation feel new and different. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro arrive just as the Android 13 will be the final major software update planned for the phones. And there"s no guarantee that Google will continue to provide security updates to either device, which could mean that the phones become vulnerable to exploits as time goes on.
That"s not all bad, as you do get Android 13 features like the Material You interface, the redesigned music player, improved continuity such as copying and pasting content between devices and additional security features like automatically deleting your phone"s clipboard history. The Pixel 4 and 4 XL also both retain Google"s unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos benefit, as long as that media is uploaded in Storage Saver quality.
Upgrading from the Pixel 4 series -- which run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor -- to Pixel 7 series" Tensor G2 chip brings a wealth of AI-powered photography enhancements like Photo Unblur and Real Tone. The Pixel 4A and 4A 5G with their less powerful Snapdragon 730G and 765G chips, respectively, also pale in comparison to the new Tensor G2 chip.
Other than losing the photo storage benefit, upgrading from the 4 and 4 XL also means you say goodbye to the phones" Motion Sense features. At the time, the 4 and 4 XL touted a sensor chip named Soli, which allowed for facial recognition similar to Apple"s Face ID along with other gestures meant for controlling the phone. The features proved unpopular though, and largely disappeared from later Pixel phones. The Pixel 7 does introduce Face Unlock, but it"s not as secure as Apple"s Face ID nor what was previously used on the Pixel 4 series.
The bottom line: If you have the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, the end of software and security updates means it"s a great time to upgrade to the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro. The bottom line: The Pixel 3 series will no longer receive software or security updates, making the phones a potential liability moving forward. While the phones are running Android 12 and will continue to otherwise function, it"s best to move onto a newer phone as soon as you can.

There are older model Pixel phones that continue to receive software and firmware updates, but these are only available as used or refurbished phones from retailers such as Amazon and some wireless carriers.
Display refresh rates are a consideration today since Android phones now support refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Displays with high refresh rates, the default is 60 Hz, allow you to scroll up and down the display faster with smoother performance. It is primarily noticeable when you swipe up and down side-by-side with devices that have different rates, but once you use a phone with 120 Hz refresh rate, it is tough to go backwards.
The Pixel 7 Pro supports a refresh rate up to 90 Hz, the Pixel 6 up to 90 Hz, and both the Pixel 5a and 6a remain at the default 60 Hz rate. 90 Hz is a decent compromise between the two.

You’ll find that many of them run with Flash, which is no longer available – fortunately, here’s one that you can still rely on – JScreenFix. JScreenFix is a free online service that can solve your problem of stuck pixels. You don’t have to download anything, so it’s not invasive nor harmful.
Visit the website jscreenfix.com and scroll down to find the Launch JScreenFix button – click on it. It will open a black screen with a square full of flickering pixels. The instructions pop up right there – however, what you’re meant to do is drag this square to the area where the stuck pixel is. Then, leave it for at least ten minutes.
If it doesn’t fix your stuck pixel on the first try, you can do a few attempts leaving it for a little longer. Usually, this method gets the job done, but it’s not a 100% guarantee.

The third option is that you see a white pixel – these are known as hot pixels. That means that all three colors (red, green and blue) are always on – this results in white light. These are more obvious on a dark background.
So, now you know what type of faulty pixels you can run into and how you can identify them. At this point, you might be wondering how do stuck pixels happen?
LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These monitors are made with multiple layers. In the far back, they have the light source that illuminates the screen with white even light.
The reason why we don’t see a fully white screen all the time is that there’s also a layer with color filters. This layer has a red, green and blue filter per pixel (RGB) – each of those would be a sub-pixel.
They can do this according to the amount of voltage. No voltage means that light can pass – full voltage blocks the light. Everything in between allows a different amount of light to pass through.
Anyway, all this explanation is to tell you that stuck or dead pixels often happen because there is a broken transistor that fails to supply voltage to a certain pixel or sub-pixel. Keep in mind that there are two types of LCD monitors: TN (Twisted Nematic) and IPS (In-Plane Switching). On TN monitors, the default without voltage is on. So, if the transistor is not supplying power, the pixel won’t be dead (black) but hot (white). On IPS monitors, it works the other way around.
So, you can use a dead pixel test. There are some free ones online such as the one from LCD Tech. You simply need to click on the Start Test button, and it will automatically enter full-screen mode in complete white.
Make sure your monitor is clean to identify dead pixels better. Because the screen will be completely white, you can also use this to find stuck pixels. On the other hand, a hot pixel won’t be visible – for these, you would need a dark screen.
Sometimes you can have bad luck and receive your new computer or monitor with an original pixel fault. In most cases, these are dead pixels, and therefore, there’s nothing you can do except try and exchange your monitor with the manufacturer.
Keep in mind that these are just good practices that can extend the life of your LCD screen. Unfortunately, there isn’t a full-proof method to avoid getting stuck pixels.
Stuck pixels are the most fixable problems you can have with your pixels. A stuck pixel can disappear on its own, or you can use other methods to try to fix it – in this article, you’ll find some of them.
It depends on the class of monitor that you have – only class I monitors shouldn’t have any dead pixels. For other classes, most manufacturers will consider one dead pixel as acceptable. This means that they probably won’t replace your new monitor because of it.

While higher pixel density delivers improved visual quality, it is not the ideal option for every situation. Additional pixel density is intended for a closer viewing distance. At a greater viewing distance, higher pixel density loses its visual advantages and simply increases the cost of the display.
Consumers can get the best value for their LED screen by determining the optimal viewing distance of their screen. The optimal viewing distance is the point where image fidelity is retained, but if the observer moved much closer, the image quality would decrease or the screen would appear pixelated.
For example, a display with interactive touch solutions will need a low pixel pitch to produce crisp images for the nearby audience. On the other hand, an LED screen displayed above viewers, like one hung in an arena, could get away with a higher pixel pitch. The short answer is that a smaller pixel pitch will always give you better quality image, but the investment will not be fully appreciated if the screen is not seen from a sufficiently close enough distance.
Visual Acuity Distance – also known as retina distance, this is a formulated calculation of the distance a person with 20/20 vision must move away from an LED screen to see a coherent image that is not pixelated.
While these methodologies are useful guides, there is no correct answer in determining viewing distance. A screen’s viewing distance is ultimately whatever the owner of the screen finds comfortable.
