FlexEnable’s glass-free organic LCD (OLCD) delivers high-brightness, long lifetime flexible displays that are low cost and scalable to large areas, while also being thin, lightweight and shatterproof.

OLCD is a plastic display technology with full colour and video-rate capability. It enables product companies to create striking designs and realise novel use cases by merging the display into the product design rather than accommodating it by the design.

Unlike flexible OLED displays, which are predominantly adopted in flagship smartphones and smartwatches, OLCD opens up the use of flexible displays to a wider range of mass-market applications. It has several attributes that make it better suited than flexible OLED to applications across large-area consumer electronics, smart home appliances, automotive, notebooks and tablets, and digital signage.

OLCD can be conformed and wrapped around surfaces and cut into non-rectangular shapes during the production process. Holes can be also added to fit around the functional design of the system – for example around knobs and switches.

As with glass-based LCD, the lifetime of OLCD is independent of the display brightness, because it is achieved through transmission of a separate light source (the backlight), rather than emission of its own light. For example OLCD can be made ultra-bright for viewing in daylight conditions without affecting the display lifetime – an important requirement for vehicle surface-integrated displays.

OLCD is the lowest cost flexible display technology – it is three to four times lower cost that flexible OLED today. This is because it makes use of existing display factories and supply chain and deploys a low temperature process that results in low manufacturing costs and high yield.

Unlike other flexible display approaches, OLCD is naturally scalable to large sizes. It can be made as small or as large as the manufacturing equipment used for flat panel displays allows.

The flexibility of OLCD allows an ultra-narrow bezel to be implemented by folding down the borders behind the display. This brings huge value in applications like notebooks and tablets where borderless means bigger displays for the same sized device. The bezel size allowed by OLCD is independent of the display size or resolution. In addition, OLCD can make a notebook up to 100g lighter and 0.5mm thinner.

OLCD is the key to the fabrication of ultra-high contrast dual cell displays with true pixel level dimming, offering OLED-like performance at a fraction of the cost. The extremely thin OLCD substrate brings advantages in cost, viewing angle and module thickness compared to glass displays. At the same time OLCD retains the flexibility required for applications such as surface-integrated automotive displays.

Due to its unique properties, OLCD has the potential to transform how and where displays are used in products. The videos below give a glimpse into this innovative technology.

OLCD brings the benefits of being thin, light, shatterproof and conformable, while offering the same quality and performance as traditional glass LCDs. The mechanical advantages of plastic OLCD over glass LCD are further enhanced by the technology’s excellent optical performance, much of which originates from the extreme thinness of plastic TAC substrates compared to glass.

Sharp has developed the Free-Form Display, a revolutionary advance over the conventional display shape concept that enables the creation of new display designs to match a variety of applications.

LCDs have contributed to the emergence and spread of a range of application products by offering not just display-related functions such as high brightness, wide viewing angle, high resolution, and superb color purity, but also by providing added value through, for example, greater environmental performance and a superior user interface thanks to touch-panel functions. In addition, LCD application product manufacturers want to offer consumers products with a more polished design, and Sharp has responded by providing these manufacturers with displays that boast features like slim profiles, light weight, and thin bezels.

Continuing on this tradition of innovation, Sharp announces the development of the Free-Form Display, a device that can be shaped to meet a wide range of user needs thanks to the incorporation of IGZO technology and proprietary circuit design methods. Conventional displays are rectangular because they require a minimal width for the bezel in order to accommodate the drive circuit, called the gate driver, around the perimeter of the screen"s display area. With the Free-Form Display, the gate driver"s function is dispersed throughout the pixels on the display area. This allows the bezel to be shrunk considerably, and it gives the freedom to design the LCD to match whatever shape the display area of the screen needs to be.

For in-vehicle applications, for example, this development makes it possible to have a single instrument panel on the car dashboard that combines a speedometer and other monitors. There are other possibilities for displays with sophisticated designs: these include wearable devices with elliptical displays and digital signage and other large monitors that draw the viewer into the onscreen world.

Dell"s newest LCD monitor has the odd translucent beauty of a fresnel lens about it. Half an inch thick and scalable to "4x HDTV" resolutions (which implies 5,120 x 2,880 unless it"s being clever), the prototype technology aims to miniaturize the hefty, bolted-on electronics that make current flat-panel monitors bulky and heavy.

With its sexy looks, however, it"s just a stalking horse for Dell"s "Display Port" idea, the aim of which is to take displays beyond the simple "plug it into the video card" connectivity model. Dell would, in other words, like to see displays become like USB or Ethernet, where one can daisy chain monitors, network them, and more capably integrate goodies like audio and panel I/O.

The only reason displays are treated differently from other peripherals is because their colossal bandwidth requirements mandate dedicated technological solutions. HDMI, for example, offers about 12 times the throughput of USB 2.0. Dell"s planning for the day such speeds can be brought to bear on general connectivity. This might be very soon, given that standard HD resolutions don"t get close to filling HDMI"s pipe.

With approximately 8,290,000 pixels, or about four times the pixels of a Full-HD display, images are highly detailed. This dynamic, large-screen display archives true-to-life, finely nuanced images. The 4K display is an excellent choice for meeting rooms where images are often viewed up close, and creates impressive ambience in signage applications for commercial facilities. It can be expected to attract considerable attention.

Conventional display panels are preset with display modes such as Standard and Dynamic. The SQ1 Series comes with an extensive display menu to let you select the most suitable mode for the content to be displayed and the viewing environment.

* Although the term "DICOM" is used, this product is not medical equipment. Do not use displayed images for medical purposes such as examination or diagnosis.

The SQ1 Series supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) (PQ and HLG). Image reproduction is stunning, from deepest black to sparkling bright highlights. Additionally, they have emulation mode for BT.2020. This enables an emulation display to support the wide color gamut of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard.

* In case of long time, the moving image is recommended to be displayed. If you display a still picture for an extended period, the image retention might remain on the screen. However, image retention can gradually disappear by displaying a moving images.

The depth of the TH-98SQ1 is only 90 mm (3.5"). The depth of the TH-98SQ1 is slim when installed using the separately sold, exclusive wall-mounting bracket (TY-WK98PV1), which complies with ADA Compliant*1. The display can be installed to blend into spaces such as crowded passageways or conference rooms without having to worry about an irregular shape getting in the way.

Split the content from image sources, and enlarge the display in a portrait orientation. There is no need to use a special device, such as a processor, while creating content from various images. Placing three TH-65SQ1 models vertically creates a display equivalent to 112 inches. This enables highly visible store signage.

Time tables, flight schedules, and other information in small text are clearly displayed. The use of durable components enables continuous, 24-hour operation.

In addition to 4K multi screens, the SQ1 Series can display 2 screens, such as PinP and PbyP. This is ideal for checking details in various applications such as videoconferences, digital signage, and surveillance monitoring.

When installing multiple displays, the Cloning function lets you use a USB memory (or LAN network) to copy the settings of a parent display to other units, thus greatly shortening the setup time.

Playlists and schedules created with Content Management Software can be transferred to displays with USB memory or via LAN. Synchronized playback on multiple displays is also supported.

Compatible with Multi Monitoring & Control Software for addition of new functions, such as automatic searching for map displays and registered devices. Displays and peripheral equipment on the intranet can be controlled and their status can be monitored. Also error notification and error indication can be detected by an indication monitoring function (for a fee) for improved maintenance.

If the main video and audio signals are interrupted, the system immediately switches to alternative signals. If the main signals are restored, the original image is displayed.

By simply connecting a display and PC with a video cable, a series of operations can be performed: the signal can be detected → the display power turned on → the input switched → and the display power turned off. There"s no need to operate a remote control, and no forgetting to turn off the power at the end of the meeting.

Every aspect of the light imaging system in Pro Display XDR is crucial to the overall quality of what you see onscreen. Each element builds on top of the last to create a display with unbelievable brightness and contrast.

Typical LCDs are edge-lit by a strip of white LEDs. The 2D backlighting system in Pro Display XDR is unlike any other. It uses a superbright array of 576 blue LEDs that allows for unmatched light control compared with white LEDs. Twelve controllers rapidly modulate each LED so that areas of the screen can be incredibly bright while other areas are incredibly dark. All of this produces an extraordinary contrast that’s the foundation for XDR.

For even greater control of light, each LED is treated with a reflective layer, a highly customized lens, and a geometrically optimized reflector that are all unique to Pro Display XDR. Through a pioneering design, light is reflected, mixed, and shaped between two layers to minimize blooming and provide uniform lighting.

Converting blue light to white is a difficult process that requires extremely precise color conversion. It’s why most display makers use white LEDs. Pro Display XDR accomplishes this conversion with an expertly designed color transformation sheet made of hundreds of layers that control the light spectrum passing through them.

Pro Display XDR extends exceptional image quality to the very edge. To ensure that LEDs along the sides of the display mix well with adjacent ones, a micro-lens array boosts light along the edges. This creates uniform color and brightness across the entire screen.

With a massive amount of processing power, the timing controller (TCON) chip utilizes an algorithm specifically created to analyze and reproduce images. It controls LEDs at over 10 times the refresh rate of the LCD itself, reducing latency and blooming. It’s capable of multiple refresh rates for amazingly smooth playback. Managing both the LED array and LCD pixels, the TCON precisely directs light and color to bring your work to life with stunning accuracy.
