Christie’s has been offering the finest collections of Classical Chinese furniture for more than 20 years. Here, we look at five sales that have helped to create today’s thriving market
In this landmark sale — arguably the most important collection of Chinese furniture to appear at auction in the 20th century — Christie’s New York offered more than 100 works from the Museum of Classical Chinese furniture in Renaissance, California. The museum no longer exists, but the sale of its treasures — with some items fetching 10 times the pre-sale estimates — helped to establish classical Chinese furniture as a mature international collecting category.
A large rare marble huanghuali and tielimu standing screen, zuopingfeng, 17th century. Sold for $1,102,500 on 19 September 1996 at Christie"s in New York
‘Ten years from now, people will be saying, “God, that stuff from Renaissance was just given away,”’ the collector Robert Hatfield Ellsworth toldNew Yorkmagazine in March 1997. Some 18 years later, Christie’s would also sell Ellsworth’s own collection (see below).
One year later, on 18 September 1997, Christie’s sale of some 100 lots from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Piccus achieved $2,371,885, confirming the strength of the international market for classical Chinese furniture.
A rare and important pair of huanghuali folding stools, jiaoyi, late 17th- early 18th century. Sold for $321,500 on 18 September 1997 at Christie"s in New York
The multi-day sale totalled $134.1 million, making it the most valuable private collection of Asian art ever offered at Christie’s. To date, it remains among the top 10 most valuable collections ever sold at Christie’s in any category.

I don"t know if NEC has an "equivalent" to Christie (or Barco) model. NEC has three models, Christie has three models but light/lumen do not match up...in the middle the imagers don"t even match up.
For instance...the NC2000C does not match up with the CP2220...while they are both "middle" projectors...the NC2000 typically tops out at a mere 11900 lumens, UNLESS you go with the super short life lamp and then you can get 17,000 lumens...but only 650-hours of life on a 4K lamp...it is very expensive to run. The CP2220 can hit 18,500 lumens on just a 3K lamp and get over 1000-hours on that lamp. Cost/hour, Christie is far cheaper for both the lamp and the electricity to run it.
The installation of the 4K Christie Duo two-projection system at TCL Chinese Theatres is among the highlights of the extensive, multi-million dollar renovation that have helped the famous landmark make the move to digital. The reopened theater features the brightest 2D and 3D 4K-resolution images in the industry, with the auditorium playing host to a wide range of high-profile events, from world premieres and gala performances, to some of the entertainment industry’s most glamorous celebrations and awards shows.
“The TCL Chinese Theatres is an iconic institution that has played a significant role in the legends and traditions of the entertainment history worldwide,” said Alwyn Hight Kushner, president and chief operating officer for TCL Chinese Theatres. “The TCL Chinese Theatres’ multi-million renovation efforts included a respectful acknowledgement of the theater’s history, while bringing it into the digital age, thanks to our digital cinema partners, which include Christie. We are also pleased that Christie projection systems are lighting up our TCL Chinese 6 Theatres’ screens nearby. For us, Christie was the clear solution for our non-Imax 2D and 3D showings.”
Craig Sholder, vice president of Entertainment Solutions at Christie said, “The TCL Chinese Theatres is part of American history, as is Christie, with our record of more than 80 years service to the cinema exhibition industry. As the official 4K digital projection partner, Christie is proud to ensure that all the content shown at the TCL Chinese Theatres is always thrilling, magical and memorable – the way movies are meant to be.”
Jim Dukes, Christie senior product manager, noted that the massive screen at TCL Chinese Theatres is an excellent canvas for demonstrating the enormous power and brightness of the total solution that Christie Duo and two Christie Solaria CP4230 projectors deliver.
“Large screens such as the one at the TCL Chinese Theatres present a challenge to most dual projection systems when it comes to the convergence of the image, which must be perfectly aligned to ensure the sharpest results possible. The Christie Duo’s configuration options solve that challenge by making image convergence quick, easy and consistent,” said Dukes. “Since its introduction, the Christie Duo has been highly acclaimed for addressing the biggest issue faced by exhibitors when screening 3D movies: that is, the delivery of ample brightness to the screen to make the experience memorable. Christie digital projectors are used by leading exhibitors around the globe and are found in more digital cinema installations than any other brand.”
The prices of folding screens vary greatly, and there are many different screens on the market. While it is possible to find some at very low prices, the most popular ones are sold for over a million euros. This was the case of the Rare and important twelve-leaf lacquered folding screen by Coromandel, made in China in 1699 which sold for 2,110,000 euros at Christie’s Paris on 12 December 2019.
Other more modest models are also popular in auction houses, such as the 17th-century Japanese six-leaf folding screen, was sold for 16,250 euros (Christie’s Paris, 12 June 2019) and the Six-leaf folding screen, circa 1920, sold for 37,500 euros (Christie’s, Paris, 10-11 December 2019).
