There"s nothing that can ruin your day quite like cracking your smartphone screen. Whether it was a fall, a throw, or just cosmic misfortune, you"re going to want it fixed fast. But you have a decision to make: Should you do it yourself or turn to a repair professional?

Believe it or not, everything you need to replace your cracked phone screen is available online, but it"s not as easy as it sounds. Before you head to eBay®, ask yourself these questions to make sure you"re ready to take on this challenge:Do you have any electronics repair experience? If your only electronics repair experience is changing the batteries on the remote, then you probably aren"t qualified to take a screwdriver to a smartphone. Smartphones are complicated machines, and one teeny-tiny misplaced screw or damaged flex wire could cause the device to no longer work. If you do have some electronics repair experience, a phone screen replacement is among the simpler smartphone repairs to complete.

Do you have a safe workspace available?Professional repair experts have workspaces set up with everything they need to complete cracked screen repairs safely. This usually includes helpful items like a magnetic work mat, suction cups, and an antistatic wrist strap that keeps repair experts grounded so they don"t accidentally zap the electronics they"re working on with electrostatic discharge, or ESD. Without these workspace essentials, it"s difficult to complete a safe cracked iPhone screen repair or Samsung cracked screen repair that will hold up over time.

Are you worried about voiding your warranty? Before starting a DIY cracked screen repair, it"s important to check the device"s warranty. If it"s a relatively new device, it may still be under warranty, and you might be eligible for a free or low-cost repair or replacement. Once a device is worked on by anyone other than a certified repair provider, the warranty on that device is void and the manufacturer will not be able to help if there are any other problems with it.

The internet is a strange place, and you shouldn"t trust everything you read when searching for how to fix a cracked phone screen. This especially applies to DIY fixes related to electronics. We"ve seen some funny ones, but these are mostly tips that will do more damage to your device than help. Here are some of our favorites and why they"re false.

While cracks in a screen could be equated to cavities, toothpaste will do nothing but create a giant minty mess on your screen. Some types of toothpaste are grainy and could be considered mildly abrasive. The thought is that rubbing this abrasive into the screen will buff the cracks out, but the screen is too thick, the cracks are too deep, and most kinds of toothpaste aren"t abrasive enough for this hack to work.

The thought behind using an eraser is similar to the toothpaste hack. The thought is that the eraser can buff out the cracks. While it"s true that an eraser will have more buffing power than toothpaste, the screens on electronics are just too thick and most cracks and scratches are too deep for this to have any effect.

Nail polish is great for fixing runs in pantyhose, but it won"t do the same for your phone screen. Please avoid using it or any other beauty products on your broken phone screen.

No. While using a liquid glass screen protector could potentially help to prevent screen breaks, it will not help much if the screen is already cracked. It could make a tiny, hairline crack less visible, but it will not fix it and will likely just make matters worse. If the liquid glass were to seep into the already present screen crack or the surrounding housing and touch any of the internal components, your phone could stop working altogether.

Cost is always an important factor when deciding whether to do something yourself or go to a professional. When it comes to repairing phone screens, there are two main components that can affect the price:

A device with extensive damage is more likely to have collateral damage to other parts that may need to also be repaired. The more that needs to be replaced, the more expensive a repair would be.

Now you have the information you need about repairing your broken phone screen. If you decide that a DIY replacement is not the route you want to take, we"re here to help. Stop by the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion or Asurion Tech Repair & Solutions™ store for fast, affordable cracked screen repair.

Once a phone has water damage — from small spills to a full liquid plunge — there’s often no easy fix. The first step should be to check if your smartphone’s Liquid Contact Indicator has been activated. Most models, including Apple, LG and Samsung, have small visible indicators to show whether water damage has occurred. Consider peace of mind for those inevitable accidents with Verizon’s Verizon Protect or  Total Mobile Protection. Not only is your phone covered if it gets water damage, you may be eligible for a full replacement that same day.

Took my Google Pixel in to fix the screen with LCD issues. They were super sweet and the service was great, but afterwards I realized my front facing camera is fuzzy. Not good when you"re a content creator and your phone (mainly the camera) is how you make money. Lol I need to be able to see myself. They said it was because they had to "open" the phone and it"s exposed to elements, which I totally understand, but it looks like something is just in there partially covering the camera. Not good. *Insert sad face here* Additionally, my phone keeps hanging up on people repeatedly during calls. Like, a lot! Never happened before.

I had the option to replace the phone for free under warranty with Google, but I had so much content on the phone I was ok to spend the $140 just getting the screen fixed. Well, unfortunately now I can"t send my phone in to Google for replacement because it"s been "fixed."

I’ve accumulated a couple of cracked phones in recent months, thanks to my resistance to cases and having a 5-year old around. Because both phones happen to be phones (Galaxy S10e and Pixel 3a) I like a lot and do not want to pay to replace, I decided I’d go the uBreakiFix route to get them freshened up and back in working condition. And since some of you may be curious how this process works, I figured I’d at least document it for those who have questions.

This seems like a common sense step, but the most important thing is to decide if your phone should be replaced or fixed. If your phone is a couple of years old, there are all sorts of ways to get new phones for cheap these days, so spending $100 on a repair may not be worth doing. However, if your phone is newish or not paid off or you just really love it, a quick 2-hour fix could be the play. Fixing a $700 phone for $100 isn’t awful, but fixing a $400 phone for $100 might be a tougher decision.

After doing that, you start walking through their repair system where you choose your phone and the service you need. Assuming you chose a store, you should see pricing for services. uBreakiFix does price match local competitors and beat those by $5, so if you think their prices are high, feel free to do a bit of shopping around.

I had two repairs, as you know, one for a back glass replacement on a Galaxy S10e and another for the front glass of the Pixel 3a. The estimated time for both to be done was close to 3 hours after I dropped them off.

Upon inspection of my phones, I noticed that the Pixel 3a screen replacement had popped up slightly in the bottom right corner, so they immediately took it to the back and put it into a “press” to try and fix it. Since it had already popped up once in 24 hours, they let me know that all repairs are covered for 90 days and that should it pop-up again, I could bring it back in at no cost and they’d potentially consider other ways to get the display to stay down. Should it pop-up after this post goes live, I’ll try to provide an update on how follow-ups go.

Payment confusion. When I paid for my Galaxy S10e back glass replacement, I was charged $99.99, which I realized when I got home was higher than what I was quoted ($79.99). I emailed the local store back to see what was up and they emailed me right back to say they were looking into the price discrepancy. A few hours after that, they called to say they were refunding me the $20 difference. I have no idea why the price changed and didn’t match up to the quote I received when I booked the appointment, but you should make sure you are charged the correct amount.

Overall, other than the Pixel 3a screen that I now need to keep an eye on and a price discrepancy that was quickly fixed, working with uBreakiFix is a pretty effortless experience for standard fixes like screen replacements. Like I said in the opening, I’ve used them before and knew what to expect this time, so I didn’t really run into any surprises. The staff has been friendly and easy to work with both times now. They explain their process pretty openly, make booking appointments and picking services super simple, and are a convenient way to get expensive gadgets up and running again without having to fully replace them. But like any other repair situation, keep documents around, inspect finished repairs, and make sure you pay what was quoted.

Care Plus is an extra coverage package for Samsung smartphones, PCs, laptops, tablets, home appliances, TVs and monitors that goes beyond the manufacturer"s warranty. Care Plus was originally called Samsung Premium Care, but was rebranded as Care Plus in 2020. The plan aims to provide quick and easy repairs and replacements of Samsung devices.

Starting from your enrollment date, Care Plus covers power-surge protection and breakdowns caused by accidental damage, as well as shipments to the manufacturer for replacement or repair and tech support through Asurion. Care Plus is inclusive of the manufacturer"s warranty, and except for the previously listed items, all other plan coverage becomes effective immediately following the manufacturer"s warranty expiration, according to the Care Plus Service Contract Coverage document.

Care Plus can cover replacements and repairs for breakdowns and failures due to normal wear and tear problems, as well as accidents such as dropping your phone, spillages and cracks. Accidental damage repairs and replacements have a cap of three times per year, according to Care Plus" FAQ. Mechanical breakdowns -- like battery failure -- have no repair limits and come with no service fees.

If you crack your screen or damage it in some other way, it will cost you $249 to repair, and you can replace it three times a year (for $249 each time). The fee is a discount from what you"ll pay to replace the inner screens if you don"t have coverage, but for the Flip, at least, it may not make sense unless you"re particularly accident-prone. You"ll be charged the $249 regardless of which screen is damaged, but if somehow you damage both screens in the same accident, you"ll only pay the $249 once.

If your initial year-long warranty has expired and you don"t have Samsung Care Plus, the inner Z Fold 3 display repair will set you back $479, if arranged through Samsung, while the outer will cost $149. The Z Flip 3 inner screen will cost you $349, while the cover display will cost $99 to replace. With Care Plus, the repair cost remains the same regardless of screen -- inner, outer or Z Flip cover screen. For the outer screens, it"s actually cheaper not to tap into Care Plus.

If Samsung approves your claim, it"ll send a replacement device. Once you receive it, you"ll need to return the faulty device within 10 days. If you miss the deadline, you"ll be charged an unrecovered equipment fee, according to the FAQ. Samsung does supply shipment packaging.

Care Plus doesn"t cover problems your device might run into in terms of "abuse, neglect, pre-existing conditions, rust, corrosion, theft or burglary, mysterious disappearance, damage from exposure to weather conditions, power fluctuations and any loss covered under a manufacturer"s warranty," according to the FAQ.

If you run into problems with your device, you can find help with repairs and replacements through uBreakiFix, which are Samsung-authorized service centers. Just visit the uBreakiFix website and enter your ZIP code. The company offers carry-in and curbside service, house calls and mail-in repairs.

Care Plus is administered by Asurion, a private company that provides insurance for smartphones, tablets, consumer electronics and more. Asurion makes the decision regarding whether your phone will need repair or replacing. After Asurion assesses your claim, it"ll let you know if you need to mail your device in or schedule an appointment with uBreakiFix. (Again, these will be handled by different companies in different countries.)

If you preordered the new Z Fold 3 or the Z Flip 3, you can get up to a year of Care Plus for free, but you can add Care Plus anytime during the first year that you"ve purchased your device. If your current device is covered under Care Plus, but you buy a new device, the coverage plan doesn"t transfer, according to the Care Plus FAQ. You pay every month, though, and can cancel at any time (though it"s not quite as simple as it sounds).

If you"ve had your device for 60 days or less, you can enroll in Care Plus with the Samsung Members app. To enroll, launch the app, tap the content card and tap Check Eligibility. If your device qualifies, you"ll just follow the on-screen prompts.

Yes. To cancel the service, you can call 1-866-371-9051, which operates 24/7. Samsung also offers the option to make a cancelation request by mail or through your Samsung account on the company"s website. On Samsung.com, click My Account > My Subscriptions. From there, you should see your active coverage plan and the option to cancel it. You can also email departmentc@asurion.com, according to Care Plus" service coverage contract. If you cancel Care Plus within 30 days of buying it, you"ll get a full refund, including sales tax.

Samsung devices come with a year"s warranty that covers mechanical breakdowns, which means you won"t pay anything if the battery or screen breaks in the first 12 months you own it.

Nonetheless, you know how expensive smartphones are. Once you’ve laid out cash for two new phones in a year, that broken phone insurance doesn’t seem so expensive after all.

If you have cracked the front screen on your phone, you’re good. You’ll pay a $29 deductible, and you may be able to get your screen repaired that very same day.

The cracked screen repair benefit is unlimited. So, if you or a child drop and crack the front screen–and then do it again–you can get it repaired as many times as needed.

But if you’ve cracked the front and the back of your phone, the cracked screen repair doesn’t apply. Then you’ll need to submit a full claim to get a whole new phone.

However, as I learned when trying to submit a claim for my daughter’s iPhone XR, having a physically broken phone doesn’t qualify you for a claim. If the phone still works, you’re SOL. On the other hand, if you’ve broken the phone in a way that it can’t charge or the power or volume buttons don’t work, then game on–you can file an insurance claim for a replacement phone.

In addition, if you don’t have extended warranty coverage on your phone, you may not be able to claim it. Honestly, it sounds a lot less straightforward than fixing a cracked screen or broken phone.

As I experienced, the Verizon broken phone insurance replaces the broken phone. You may think you have to go to the Verizon Wireless website to start your claim–and you can, within your account–but you’ll be redirected to their partner Asurion.

Then, Asurion will ask you for information about the phone including what happened to it. So, when I started the claim for my phone, I’d just put in about the physical damage. Almost instantaneously, Asurion rejected my claim.

After that, I realized I needed to put in more details about how the phone was working. Turns out damage to the port is covered. Shattering a screen isn’t. Well, it is, but under a different claim process. And for that you don’t get a whole new phone.

My next step was to turn off Find My iPhone on that phone. For anyone who has ever actually used Find My iPhone to, well, find their iPhone, actively turning this off isn’t easy to do. But I knew I had to since Asurion said they couldn’t move ahead with the claim until that was done.

Once you’re done turning off Find My iPhone, the claim completes, and then Asurion overnights you a new phone. When you get the new phone, you activate it and, voila, you have your new phone.

The final step for you is to send back the phone to Asurion. They will provide you with a postage-paid package. You have about a week to send it back. If you don’t you’ll be charged the cost of a new phone.

Additionally, once your phone gets back to Asurion, they will look it over. If the damage described doesn’t match up with what they observe, they may deny your claim after the fact and charge you for a new phone. So, don’t file any fraudulent insurance claims.

Here was another shocker when putting in a broken phone claim. Through Verizon’s relationship with Asurion, you’re not getting a new phone. You’re getting a newly refurbished phone.

At first I was worried about getting a refurbished phone. But I have to say that my replacement iPhone 6 continues to work great. While I’d love to have a new iPhone 13, I just can’t justify the cost when this phone works so well.

Apple doesn’t charge any deductibles when filing an AppleCare claim for mechanical issues. As I’ve explained above, for us, deductibles could range from $100 to $229.

Both Applecare and Verizon charge a $29 deductible for a shattered screen replacement. However, Apple limits you to two screen fixes per year. Verizon gives you unlimited screen fixes for that same $29 each time.

I mean, I can’t do anything about the money I’ve already spent on insurance. But that doesn’t mean I have to spend more money when it won’t get her a brand-new phone.

I’ve been able to replace my Otterbox twice in the past 10 years–and only pay about $6 for it. Both times it was because the plastic part of the case was broken. Because of that, it wouldn’t close properly around my phone or sit inside the rubber outer case.
