Checking composition, focus and your histogram outdoors is easy with a HoodLoupe. HoodLoupe is worn around your neck. To review images, glare-free, place HoodLoupe over your LCD. HoodLoupe’s 3 diopter adjustment accommodates those with less than perfect vision; turn the eyepiece in or out to set your vision. Precise glass optics give you a bright, clear and non-pixelated image to view. The new 3 lens optical module accepts multiple mounting bases. Should your LCD size change, you just need to buy the HoodLoupe base that fits your new LCD. To save space, the optical module separates from the base which will nest over the optical module and fit snuggly in its carry bag. HoodLoupe integrates with all Hoodman live view mounting plates for hands-free use. The neck lanyard provided can be upgraded to a retractable lanyard that clips to your belt.

A video magnifier, or closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, uses a stand-mounted or handheld video camera to project a magnified image onto a video monitor, a television (TV) screen, or a computer monitor. Cameras with zoom lenses provide variable magnification. In most of these systems, magnification level and focus are set after choosing a comfortable and functional working distance between the camera and the material to be viewed. Some systems use an auto-focus camera. Lower cost video magnifiers often use cameras that have a fixed focus and cannot vary magnification or camera-to-target distance. Most cameras also need their own light source.

Cameras that are mounted on a fixed stand require the reading material to be placed under the camera and moved across and down the page. To make the process of viewing easier, a table that is movable from the top of the page to the bottom and side to side (referred to as an x-y table) is used with most stand-mounted cameras. Stand-mounted cameras are particularly effective for handwriting because a hand can fit under the camera.

In contrast to stand-mounted cameras, handheld cameras are designed for bringing the camera to the material to be viewed. They can magnify almost anything within reach, including labels on packages of food and medicine. Handheld cameras are often on rollers, which make them easier to move across a flat working surface. Some manufacturers of video magnifiers that use handheld cameras offer a writing stand as an accessory.

All video magnifiers offer the option of viewing black letters on a white background or white letters on a black background. Controls for contrast and brightness are also standard. Many video magnifiers also provide other special on-screen features and controls including underlining or overlining of text. Some systems work jointly with a computer, offering the option of sharing the computer monitor. Color video magnifiers are useful for reading materials in which color is crucial, such as maps and color photographs. A radical departure in design from conventional video magnifiers is the use of head-mounted displays (HMD). They offer portability and new ways of viewing the display. Being able to capture and save an image is also a new function that has recently become available.

Typically, video magnifiers that use a camera mounted on a fixed stand and x-y table are in the $1,800 to $4,000 price range. Lower cost video magnifiers that plug into a TV are in the $400 to $1,000 price range.

Some advantages: Far less costly, light in weight, adds little to the X10"s profile, and folds flat against the LCD when not in use. Mine is ALWAYS attached to the X10 and is especially useful for shooting with the tele end of the zoom. You get focus confirmation and all LCD information, more accurate evaluation of sharpness, and the CV, when pressed up against your cheekbone, gives you enhanced steadiness. Tripod mount CV version leaves your hot shoe free for external flash, and, unlike what happens when you shoot with a shoe-mounted optical viewfinder, there"s nothing to obstruct deployment of the onboard flash. Be sure you specify the X10 version and choose between regular or premium lens.

Works like a charm indoors for both horizontal and vertical shooting; outdoors in bright sunlight, there may be times when you"ll want to shade the LCD with your free hand, but this is very easily done, esp. with a camera as small as the X10. Also, I"ve found it never hurts to shoot ouitdoors with a baseball cap or hat.

Just a reminder to anyone using a viewfinder fitted with an eyepiece, magnifier or loupe not to leave it pointing up at the sun. Every year I see dozens of examples of burnt  and damaged LCD screens and OLED displays caused by sunlight entering the viewfinder eyepiece and getting focussed onto the screen and burning or melting it.

It can only take a few seconds for the damage to occur and it’s normally irreversible. Even walking from shot to shot with the camera viewfinder pointed towards the sky can be enough to do damage if the sun is out.

So be careful, cover or cap the viewfinder when you are not using it. Tilt it down when carrying the camera between locations or shots. Don’t turn to chat to someone else on set and leave the VF pointing at the sun. If you are shooting outside on a bright sunny day consider using a comfort shade such as an umbrella or large flag above your shooting position to keep both you and the camera out of the sun.

Damage to the viewfinder can appear as a smudge or dark patch on the screen that does not wipe off. If the cameras was left for a long period it may appear as a dark line across the image. You can also sometimes melt the surround to the LCD or OLED screen.

As well as the viewfinder don’t point your camera directly into the sun. Even an ND filter may not protect the sensor from damage as most regular ND filters allow the infra red wavelengths that do much of the damage straight through.  Shutter speed makes no difference to the amount of light hitting the sensor in a video camera, so even at a high shutter speed damage to the cameras sensor or internal ND’s can occur. So be careful when shooting into the sun. Use an IR ND filter and avoid shooting with the aperture wide open, especially with static shots such as time-lapse.

For people who have impaired vision but still have some sight, a screen magnifier can help them to access and interact with digital content such as websites or documents. Screen magnification works by zooming in on the whole screen or sections of a screen as if you are looking through a magnifying glass. Some magnification packages can enlarge the screen by up to 64 times. There is inbuilt software which can magnify the screen for most users, but if you do need additional functionality you will need to consider paid for screen magnification software.  Some of this can be very expensive.

It"s fairly simple to use these tools using some keyboard shortcuts or touch gestures. These gestures control when you turn on the magnification and how far it zooms in. Mastering the basics doesn"t take long, and you"ll only need a few commands. It may take a little longer to master some of the advanced features and you may want to consider some additional training.AbilityNet"s Techvolunteers offer free tech support and many are skilled in using a screen reader.

Most devices have in-built (free) screen magnification software and settings, you will normally find these in the accessibility settings on your device. AbilityNet’s My Computer My Way website can help you find where this is on your device or follow the guidlines, below:

The magnifier can be configured to start up before you sign-in, so it is available for anyone using the computer, or after sign-in, if you only want it to start automatically for you.

There are also options to invert colours which can make text clearer, as well as options to ‘smooth’ the edges of text and images as zooming can make things appear in blocks at high magnification. Choices for how the magnifier will appear on screen include fixed (‘docked’), full screen, or as a ‘lens’ that follows the movement of your mouse.

Zoom is the screen magnifier for Apple devices including Mac desktops, laptops iPads and iPhones. It is particularly popular on the iPhone and it works well with millions of apps as well as with the internet using Apple’s Safari browser. can find Zoom under the Accessibility options in ‘Settings’ (the cog icon).

Chromebooks (laptop-like devices that run Google’s ChromeOS operating system) also have an in-built magnifier that will run either full screen or in ‘docked’ mode.

You can find this option in the ‘Accessibility Settings’ by clicking in the status area in the bottom right corner, and selecting; Settings > Advanced (at the very bottom of the page) > Manage Accessibility Features and then selecting the on/off switch for either ‘Enable full-screen magnifier’ or ‘Enable docked magnifier’.

There are also specialist programs that have some additional features such as higher levels of zoom. The most popular programs are SuperNova and Zoom Text for Windows computers.  Please bear in mind that this software can cost hundreds of pounds. We would advise that if are interested in these software packages, you download a trial version of them to  trial them out.

SuperNovais designed for people with some sight. The program enables you to choose between magnifying the whole screen or by splitting the screen, so one part is zoomed-in and the other remains at the original size, as this can be easier to navigate around the screen.

Magnification starts at 1.2 times and goes all the way up to 64 times.  Control the magnification using the keyboard, or by using the scroll button on the mouse.  SuperNova also gives you the choice to change the colours on the screen, as this can make text stand out more. If you use a touch screen there is support available to make your computer use easier with The “Touchscreen Tool Bar”.

This package comes in both screen magnification and screen magnification with speech feedback. Speech feedback reads out the text on the screen in a number of different voices and accents.

Zoom Text also includes a feature that enables you to connect a camera (such as a webcam) to your computer, you will be able to magnify text on a paper document and use your computer screen and Zoom Text software to zoom in to the printed text.

There are different versions of both Zoom Text and SuperNova. The entry-level (basic) versions will magnify text and the more advanced (and expensive) versions include features such as reading out the contents of the screen.

Having a good-quality monitor or display will often make a huge difference in how clear the screen is and will minimise the amount of blur when you zoom in. Be aware that your choice of magnification software will depend on:

•            Are you wanting to use the software for personal use, or do you need to use it at work? Could Access to Work support you in funding the equipment?

Some have a camera system that displays a magnified image on a monitor, which can be helpful for reading books, magazines, and even doing some personal grooming tasks, such as applying makeup or doing a manicure.

Others are hand-held, portable, and have a broad range of magnification powers. They can be taken to restaurants for reading menus, or to the supermarket to read labels and coupons.

It consists of a camera that is mounted on a frame or arm that displays a magnified image on a monitor. They are generally referred to as electronic or video magnifiers (in the past they were known as closed circuit television systems or CCTVs).

Some models now have optical character recognition (OCR), along with speech output, in addition to magnifying text or images and showing it on the monitor. This enables the person to hear the text being read aloud at the same time it is displayed on the monitor. This may be very helpful for a person with a serious vision loss, whether in terms of diminished visual acuity or a challenging visual field defect.

The primary benefits of video magnifiers are that it can enlarge or magnify print, pictures, artwork, or whatever else is placed under the camera; in addition, it can also enhance the contrast and brighten the image on the monitor.

Most models have a movable tray (called an XY table) to hold and support the reading or writing materials or your other work. The tray/table can move in almost any direction underneath the camera.

Some cameras can rotate about 360 degrees and can allow you to view items at a distance (such as a white board or PowerPoint presentation in a classroom), or watch yourself apply makeup or do other personal grooming tasks.

For models with OCR and speech output, you can hear text and documents read out loud (with earbuds if desired for privacy), in addition to seeing the material on the monitor. This allows for greater speed and ease in reading when you have a serious vision loss.

A portable electronic magnifier is a device with a camera on the underside that captures the image of text, pictures, or other items, and a monitor on the top side that displays the image.

They can be used or taken anywhere—such as to a restaurant, store, or church. You can sit in your easy chair, couch, or bed to use it, as opposed to sitting at a table or desk for a desktop video magnifier

Although they have a larger field of view than most magnifiers, they have a smaller field of view than a desktop electronic magnifier, which can still be frustrating for some persons.

Before you purchase a desktop electronoic magnifier, it’s usually recommended that you have a low vision examination with either an optometrist or ophthalmologist who has had additional training in low vision and discuss various options for reading and writing, as well as your desire to use electronic magnification.

Try to find an agency or a location in which you can have hands-on experience with a variety of magnification systems before purchasing one. It can take a little while to learn how to use an electronic desktop magnifier successfully, especially if you purchase one with several buttons or controls. Some units may be easier to use than others.

Take your time and check the particular features that work best for you. Some low vision clinics, doctors, agencies, and online resources offer loaner programs and/or resale of older but very usable electronic magnifiers, which can reduce the purchase price substantially.

It’s also possible to use your current desktop or laptop computer, even if the font has become too small for you to see. Hadley Vision Resources | Free Resources For Living with Low Vision has a number of helpful hints and tips specifically for users who have low vision, including using built-in keyboard commands to enlarge the font and increase the contrast on the screen.

Smartphones are becoming increasingly helpful as an alternative to a desktop or a portable video magnifier. The cameras on smartphones and some tablets have developed much better resolution than previously.

You can use them to take a picture of text or an object (a prescription bottle, package, or can, for example) and then enlarge image for easier reading.

Many users state that a portable electronic magnifier still has better resolution, features, and benefits, partly because they were specifically designed for people with low vision; however, smartphones have become increasingly helpful for reading. There are many helpful apps and features that can offer reading assistance, along with online tutoring for the use of these apps and the optimal use of the smartphone itself.

Dont bother with any bundled CDs or manufacturer drivers. This USB camera shows up in Windows 10 Enterprise and can be used with the Win10 Camera app. Youll have to select USB 2.0 Webcam first.

For 20 bucks this thing is great. I dont know why there are bad reviews about it being hard to setup. I just plugged it into my laptop and opened the Windows 10 camera app and it worked. I also installed the manufacturer software and it worked fine too. I downloaded the software from the manufacturer website and didnt use the included CD because my laptop has no optical drive. The manufacturer software has some basic measurement tools that can be calibrated with the included calibration sheet for measuring feature sizes in images. The only weak point is the stand which is pretty flimsy.

I had no trouble installing software on Windows 10. This microscope allowed me to repair the T-Con board in a Samsung TV. Overall, the repair only cost $30 camera plus ICs. Bargain!!!

This very inexpensive digital camera works amazingly well! Came with a CD, but I down loaded software from their website. Installed easily and seems to work perfectly in my Windows 10 system.

The sales info on this device only says it works with Windows 7 and earlier, and nothing about tablets. I took the chance. I have not tried the Chinese software the instructions cite, but the camera works well on a Windows 10 laptop if you run it with the built-in WebCam software without the zoom feature. I also found a USB webcam app for my Galaxy Android tablet that will run it, allowing me to take it out to my beehives to inspect eggs and larvae. The resolution is OK considering the low price, and the image is great.

Nice unit at a good price but getting the software to run is VERY diificult on Windows 10. Instructions are less than clear. Almost need the microscope to read the enclosed Simple Operation Guide as the text is very small. The pictures in the English version of the online manual are in Chinese makijng it difficult to know what you are supposed to be seeing. I had to rename the HiView executable removing all the Chinese characters before W10 would run it to install the software. That wasnt mentioned anywhere. I would probably still be trying to make it work if not for help in the other reviews here. Still trying to figure out how to make it zoom. I would rate this a 4 or 5 if the instructions were clearer and more detailed. Be prepared to put in some effort to get this software installed and working. Its worth it though, when you do get it running.

My family IT guru opened Camera standard in W 10 and it works great up to 680 X 420. Laptop camera is default, plug in and select other camera. Light dimmer on cord. Internal lenses can be removed, maybe attach to an old film camera fixed focus lens to make a telescope.
