This is crap – Adobe are typically lazy at fixing these niggling bugs. This is one of the most common issues queried yet they still refuse to sort the bloody problem out. “It’s okay, they don’t print” is not bloody good enough. What if you create a publication that is intended for screen and not print? then you have to deal with them.. and what if you can’t Export the file because it must be postscripted and distilled for file-size issues? then you have to deal with them. Fix this problem adobe, re-write your anti-aliasing routines or whatever just fix this bloody problem. We pay enough money to use your bug-ridden software as it is. Sick of it. Rawr.

@TheWolf: If you’re intending to make a pdf for screen and not print, then you wouldn’t need to flatten it (with pdf/x1a) would you? The distiller route flattens, but you virtually never need to use that anymore, even to get tiny PDFs.

This was driving me crazy as well – thank you for posting on this issue! I may have found a work around for files created in Illustrator CS4. Create Outlines > Ungroup > Flatten Transparency. (just a thought not proven…)

I am preparing InDesign files for a web-published version of a print magazine. We get the thin white lines in the version for iPad but not when looking at the layouts on computer monitors. Flattening doesn’t help. Any thoughts?

@Anne: Flattening won’t help because it’s probably the cause of the white lines to begin with. You would need to create a new PDF that is not flattened (using Acrobat 6 compatibility, for example).

I just was introduced to this annoying problem. I found if I made the file from indesign but made it compatible with acrobat 4, I got the lines, if I made it compatible with acrobat 5- no lines, using the PDFx1a presets and changing that one default seemed to make them go away altogether. It would be nice if adobe would have addressed this issue as I’m sure that they know this happens and is a pain for designers and clients-even if they don’t print-people want to see a reliable preview.

Hi, client has supplied an advert for inclusion in a magazine of ours which has these white lines. However, I know that they won’t print as they disappear/change width when zooming in and out. Also, completely disappear when turning off smoothing. However, I’ve always been instructed to re-save artwork supplied to me as a JPEG (don’t ask, I just follow instructions…) which of course will flatten the artwork. What’s the best procedure in this situation? Had considered importing the original PDF direct into my QuarkXpress file BUT then realised that when I save as postscript and distill this too would be flattened? Would it not? So, shall I just send that original PDF direct to printers?

If the PDF file your client sent you has those white lines, it means that it has already been flattened. So there’s nothing you can/should do except place it in QX and create your PDF.

There almost never a day goes by without a customer in a frenzy about the white lines… Now I will just send them to this page and will enjoy the peace :-) thank you!

We have an A3 poster created to be printed to A1 (digital printer) and client just called to tell me that there are white lines appear on the poster!!! I am using CS5.5 and used the transparency flattener to outlined the text, request from the printer (Client’s printer). Is there another way around to outlined text (apart from doing it manually) to avoid this annoying white lines that never should have got printed?

When exported as a PDF, certain graphics in a booklet file will appear with a gray border around them. Tried the tricks outlined here and at Adobe’s troubleshooting page to no avail. The lines do not appear in the printed version nor when viewed in Acrobat. Only Preview (Mac) — but I like having a digital version to share with people and don’t want to have to insist they not view in Preview.

I seem to have narrowed this down to the fact that the embedded graphics in question are actually PDFs themselves; all the other graphics in the file are other formats (JPG, PNG, etc.) and don’t show lines.

Those lines are very annoying and lend little confidence as to whether the print result will be okay. A trick that I learned from my printer who is still using Adobe 1.3 conversion is to open your pdf into Photoshop – if all looks okay you’re set and don’t have to worry. has saved me hours of fretting and re-flattening files in illustrator and indesign.

Previously in CS4 I had the white line problems on screen in Acrobat but never on print. After upgrading to CS6 Master Collection the lines have come to (laser)prints too when printing from Acrobat (4.0 PDF).In CS6 the lines are dark.

PDF 6.0 works ok but there ?s a magazine printer that didn?t approve never versions. It?s been a few years since I sent them ads but I?m still a bit worried. The lines even appear if I import the 4.0 PDF to photoshop.

Those lines can happen even in CS6 and Acrobat 10. Check to see if you’ve placed any FX on a group. For example if you group some objects then put an inner shadow on the group, you may end up with those hairlines. The alternative way to get that inner shadow and avoid the hairlines is to remove the shadow on the group, place a white box over the group, put the shadow on the white box, then set the box to multiply. The white disappears, the shadow remains, and no white hairlines will be on your PDFs, no matter what version.

This problem is inherent to Acrobat and easy to solve. Open the preferences panel. Click on “Page Display” in the right column named “Categories”. In the “Rendering” section, make sure that “Smooth line art” is unchecked. There you are, the ghost lines should disappear.

it is happening to me with gradients in illustrator. When I save the logo as an EPS and then view in Acrobat there is white pin lines all over it. I am using CC so, you would think this would have been fixed by now. Now the client is asking for an EPS and I have to hand over something that is less then the perfection they are paying me for. I know that I just have to explain that the lines won’t print but it still sucks to have to deal with it.

I am stuck, I am getting white lines on artwork (placed psd files in to indesign CS4) that don’t disappear when I scroll in. I have tried to uncheck the smooth line art box but is not highlighted so I can’t uncheck it. Please help it is driving me mad!

I had the same problem using ID CC and Acrobat 10, but the white line turned to a cyan and magenta line in the rip to plate process. The client had set transparency to low, so I set it on medium, PDF with no “X” and it has worked fine now.

I have a psd file with transparent background placed in Indesign. Under the image, I have a blue shape, and I have the stitching going through the image where the stroke of the shape would be. I’ve printed it out on my own machine and the lines do show up. I hope they won’t show up in print, as you say the don’t show up on commercial grade printers. Would love to try un-checking the ‘smooth line art’ option so many of you recommend, only the option is grayed out by me. I have no idea how to get that changed.

I’ve done the unchecking the smooth lines box, and even though it solves the problem with the white lines, it creates another: the edges appear rough/pixelated. Since my goal is to have a clear image without white lines or rough edges, I need to find another solution. Any tips?

I finally solved this issue, by exporting all to PNG (no white lines appear), then combining all the png files into PDF using acrobat pro (or another 3rd party pdf tool). Doesn’t retain layers etc but it removes the lines if all you want to do is present the file to someone (which way my use case).

Fiddling with the smooth text options is not a viable solution. Only because you don’t see any artefacts doesn’t mean they’re not there. The lines will still show up when your pdf is rasterized which means they may cause problems in print, and they will definitely become an issue if image files for further use are created from your pdf (as may be the case with a logotype, for instance).

After getting a couple "white line" replacement screens to work correctly in other phones, I"ve concluded you must be very careful with the way you fold the flex cables, make it just like the original. if its got too much curve and not enough of a fold it can make the lcd go wonky. I originally tested the screens without fitting them in the frame and they worked but once i fitted them into the frame i got the white lines. i wasn"t paying close enough attention to the folds.

So I"ve had this problem again a couple times, and just in last hour now as well. This last one, I quickly realized the connection wasn"t seated properly (which by the way, it is EXTREMLY EASY to seat the lcd flex off to the side and not centred), after connecting hundreds of flex cables, the iPhone 5C is the only one I"ve had issues with seating correctly. Anyway, even after correctly seating the flex, when I powered the iPhone back on, the lines and other graphics were still burned into the screen, and the backlight was rapidly flashing. I started to swear. Then I just left iPhone to charge up to 100% and the burned in graphics have faded away, and it works correctly!

On a modern LCD TV screen, white (or any color) vertical lines appear when the individual “tab bonded” wire connections of the ribbon cable servicing a column of pixels on the LCD display begin to fail. It could also be a loose connection of the ribbon cable between the t-con and display.

Subsequently, question is, why has a line appeared on my TV? When a TV is showing vertical colored lines, a loose wire cable in the TV might be the cause. If you knock on the back of the TV, the vertical colored lines MAY disappear temporarily. This is a sign that a cable is loose or the T-Con board is faulty.

If your flat-screen TV has the dreaded vertical lines, half of the screen has turned darker, the screen is cracked, or the screen is broken, this can be repaired but may cost more than you paid for the complete TV. If your screen is cracked or broken, you can try replacing the Screen, LCD, Plasma, or LED part.

Have you ever left your TV or monitor on for days, stuck on the same image? You return to your screen, only to find an image burned into the display. No matter what you do, it won"t go away. It is a permanent image burn.

Why do monitors and TVs get image burn? Why can"t manufacturers prevent LCDs and plasma screens from a burnt image imprint? Moreover, what can you do to fix an image burn?

Before flat-screens and crystal displays, most TVs and monitors featured CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology. In CRTs, individual pixels comprise a red, blue, and green phosphor component. Depending on the intensity of each phosphor component, the pixel appears to the human eye as a unique color.

When a particular still image remains for too long, the intensity of each phosphor component diminishes at an uneven rate. The result is a ghost image on the screen, which is known as image burning.

This is a very simplified version of how a plasma screen works. However, the main thing to understand is that plasma screens use phosphor material (like CRTs) to turn those photons into images.

LCD and LED do not work in the same way as CRTs, either. LCD and LED screens use backlit liquid crystals to display colors. Although manufacturers market screens using LED and LCD, an LED screen is still a type of LCD. The white backlight filters through the liquid crystals, which extract particular colors per pixel.

LCD and LED displays don"t suffer from the same type of image burn as CRTs and plasma screens. They"re not completely clear, though. LCD and LED screens suffer from image persistence. Read on to find out more about image persistence.

Before you can fix screen burn-in, take a second to understand why these images burn in the first place. LCDs and LEDs don"t suffer from burn-in as seriously as plasma screens. But static images can leave an imprint on both display types if left alone for too long. So, why does image burn happen?

First, let"s tackle plasma screen burn-in. Remember why CRTs experience image burn? When a still image remains on the screen for too long, the phosphor components in each pixel wear out at different rates. The uneven burn rates leave behind a ghost image, forever etched into the screen.

Plasma screens also suffer from phosphor deterioration. Plasma burning occurs when pixels on the screen are damaged through long exposure. The phosphor loses its intensity and only shows the light it was fed repeatedly. In this case, the still image, which causes the burn.

LCD and LED screens can also experience image burn, though the image burn process can take longer to develop into a permanent issue. In addition, LCD and LED screens suffer from another issue, known as image retention (also known as image persistence or an LCD shadow).

Image retention is a temporary issue that you are more likely to notice before it becomes a permanent issue. However, proper image burn can still affect LCD, LED, and OLED screens.

Image retention is a different issue from image burn (although it is a precursor to image burn). For example, you"re using an image of a steam train as a reference point for a drawing. You have the steam train image on your screen for a few hours before you decide to play a video game instead.

When you load up the video game on the screen, you can still see the faint outline of the steam train on the screen. The steam train image will remain for a short while, but the movement and color changes of the video game (or film, TV show, or other media type) should erase the retained image.

The other thing to consider is that LED and OLED image burn-in, when it happens, is irreversible. That"s because of how LED and OLED screens work. Individual pixels within an LED display decay when they emit light.

Under normal use, an LED, OLED, or QLED screen won"t suffer image burn. However, if you leave your screen on a single channel for hours every day, then burn-in can become an issue, as it would with almost any screen.

Issues arise when a screen shows a single news channel 24 hours a day, every day, causing channel logos to burn-in, along with the outline of the scrolling news ticker and so on. News channels are a well-known source of television burn-in, no matter the screen type.

Image burn-in fixes exist for LCD and plasma screens. How effective an image burn-in fix is depends on the screen damage. Depending on the length and severity of the image burn, some displays may have permanent damage.

The best fix for screen burn is to prevent it in the first place. Okay, that isn"t super useful if your screen is already experiencing image burn. However, you should always try not to leave your screen on a still image for too long. The time it takes for an image to burn-in varies from screen to screen, between manufacturers, sizes, and panel type.

Another prevention method is to reduce screen contrast as much as you can. Unfortunately, most screens aren"t calibrated correctly, often pushing the contrast and brightness settings too high.

Lower contrast means the lighting across your screen is more even. This means less strain on specific areas of the screen, which helps protect against image burning.

If your plasma or LCD screen already has image burn-in, you can try turning on white static for 12 to 24 hours. The constant moving of white-and-black across your screen in random patterns can help remove the ghost image from your screen.

Unfortunately, this won"t work for extreme cases. Some TVs will have a built-in pattern swiping option that basically accomplishes the same thing (filling your screen with random patterns).

Pixel-shift constantly slightly adjusts the image on your screen, which varies the pixel usage to counteract image burn. You might have to enable a pixel or screen shift option in your screen settings. Pixel-shift is a handy feature for LED and OLED screens that cannot recover from image burn and should help counteract an LCD shadow.

Other modern screens feature built-in screen refresh functions that the manufacturer will advise using to remove image retention and image burn issues.

The best tool for fixing ghost images is JScreenFix. The original program helps fix monitors with dead pixels, but the same company also released an "advanced" version of the tool, known as JScreenFix Deluxe.

While the Deluxe version uses advanced algorithms to repair burned screens and prolong plasma and LCD longevity, the official site is no longer up and running, and there is no way to download the full version officially.

Another option is to set a completely white desktop background and leaving to run for a few hours. The solid color might reset the image burn. A solid color background is more likely to help with image persistence than image burn, but it is still worth trying.

If you have television burn-in, you can attach a laptop to your TV using an HDMI cable, extend your desktop to the television, and share the white screensaver. Hopefully, that will shift your television burn-in.

The team over at ScreenBurnFixer offers a few different ways you can attempt to fix screen burn on your TV or monitor. As with any other screen burn-in fixes, their chance of working depends on the scale of the issue.

You can head to the ScreenBurnFixer Video page and find a video that matches your screen type, then let the video play for as long as possible (we"re talking multiple hours, not a quick half an hour blast). Alternatively, head to the Chart page and find your device or a device that matches your specifications.

There are several ways you can attempt to fix screen burn-in. The results will vary between the screen type and the level of burn-in. A screen with extensive image burn may not clear entirely, although you might see an improvement.

Some screen degradation over time is understandable. However, if you follow the steps in this guide, you"ll protect your screen from image burn before it becomes a permanent issue.

Back in April last year, Lionel blogged about a vertical line issue that could potentially affect customers who own 17" Inspiron 9200, 9300, and XPS Gen 2 notebook LCDs.

After engaging our engineering and product group teams, as well as the LCD manufacturer, to investigate and isolate the cause of this issue, we narrowed the problem down to a specific part within a certain date range. During that research, we found that the part may also affect the Inspiron 6000, 8600, Latitude D800, D810, and Precision Mobile Workstation M60 and M70 LCDs. That led to Lionel"s second blog post on the topic.

We"ve taken steps to contact those who may be affected to offer a warranty replacement and also put in place measures to rectify any out of pocket expense incurred by out of warranty customers who replaced the affected screens in the past.

That said, there are other variables that can lead to vertical and horizontal lines on other system types regardless of size or model. Lines on an LCD can appear sporadically, at random places on the screen, and for what appears to be for no reason at all. These lines can be caused by normal LCD failures brought on by a multitude of variables, which I"ll try to cover here. Vertical lines tend to be a more common issue in notebooks, primarily because they are subjected to more wear and tear on a daily basis than a desktop LCD.

The most common cause of these lines is simply a loose connection. As notebook systems are carried around, no matter how careful we try to be, they have a tendency to be bumped, jarred, and even sometimes the heart stopping drop. Though today"s notebooks are designed to better absorb and dissipate small shocks, it can still have adverse affects on the notebook"s internal components. A good bump or series of bumps and random movements can cause the LCD cable to become loose. The connection remains intact, but some breaks in the signal can lead to impurities in the reproduction of the image on the screen. Think of a loosely-fastened garden hose… water will still be directed and outputted through the end of the hose, but some water is lost at the connection. This is easily fixed by tightening the hose. Similarly, the LCD can usually be fixed by simply making sure the connection is secure. (Service manuals for Dell systems can be found here on support.dell.com.)

If these simple fixes don"t seem to work, then we need to look at the actual failure possibilities. Vertical or horizontal lines that don"t disappear after the basic troubleshooting are usually caused by circumstantial failures. The most common type of failure that leads to lines on the display is an open circuit connection between the driver IC (flexible circuit board) and LCD glass. This is usually caused by external stresses (mechanical, thermal, etc…), which causes the flex circuit to detach from the glass. The variables leading to the detachment are wide and are dependant on individual cases. With the amount of travel and various operating environments of a notebook, pinpointing the exact cause can be near impossible, unless of course the problem immediately follows a catastrophic event such as dropping the notebook or prolonged exposure to heat or cold, such as leaving the system in a car.
