Our first segment introduces you to the new Arch 1s. When the KTM RC 390 was first launched in India, it had little to no competition. No other motorcycle offered such explosive performance, razor-sharp handling and a wide array of features like the RC 390. But things are different now because the competition now looks more equipped than ever. The TVS Apache RR 310 for instance, offers better equipment now and looks the part too. Though it is still unmatched because of the performance it packs and the price it asks for but most of us would agree that the venerable RC 390 has started feeling a little dated.

KTM recently launched the Adventure 390 and loaded it with some serious tech and that gives us an idea about what we can expect from the upcoming RC 390. KTM already has the necessary ingredients and they just have to pour it in a vessel, mix it thoroughly and pour the orange dish on a warm platter. Here are five features that we expect from the new KTM RC 390:

While the competition has gradually moved towards LED headlights for good, the BS6 RC 390 still makes do with projector headlamps. For instance, one of the main highlights of the Apache RR 310 is its bi-xenon LED projector headlamps. If KTM decides to swap similar units in the RC 390, it will not only enhance the looks but will provide better illumination too. We can also expect a redesigned headlamp housing which will further sharpen the looks.

TFT colour displays have become all the rage nowadays. The level of sophistication and the practicality of mobile phone connectivity options these displays bring on the table are unmatched. The Apache RR 310 is considered to be one of the prime rivals of the RC 390 and with the recent update, the TFT display of the RR 310 is more futuristic than before. KTM already has a TFT display in their arsenal but the BS6 RC 390 still makes do with the small, cluttered unit of the previous-gen KTMs. But hopefully, we will finally see the new RC 390 utilizing a TFT colour display.

Track aficionados absolutely love bi-directional quickshifter because when you are out on the track, every millisecond matters. Quickshifter allows you to seamlessly upshift or downshift without using the clutch. KTM introduced the Adventure 390 with a quickshifter as standard. Though it doesn’t work as effortlessly as it should, it does the job anyway. The RC 390, being an out and out track-focused motorcycle, would benefit a lot with a quickshifter. It is already a fast and sharp motorcycle around the track and the quickshifter will only make it faster.

Traction control really comes in handy when you find yourselves in tricky situations. With the kind of power the RC 390 produces from its single-cylinder configuration, traction control would introduce a much-needed leash on its power. The Adventure 390 already has a traction control system so it shouldn’t be that hard for it to drip down to the RC 390. It will also assist in new riders getting accustomed to the power delivery of that mad motor.

Another possible and crucial addition to the new RC 390 could be riding modes. The RC 390 hasn’t received any major update ever since it was launched in India but it did gain ride-by-wire throttle which completely eliminates throttle cable from the setup and uses throttle sensors instead. Incorporating riding modes in a motorcycle driven by ride-by-wire throttle isn’t that hard.

TVS pulled it off with the new BS6 Apache RR 310 when they installed ride-by-wire throttle and included 4 different riding modes. Riding modes could come in really handy for the people who are not a fan of KTM’s high-revving nature and the explosive performance. It might actually improve its fuel efficiency too.

KTM first launched the RC 390 in 2012 at the EICMA in Milan, Italy. KTM Asia collaborated with Bajaj Auto to assemble the body and chassis for the bike. RC 390 was a perfect bike for riders who loved adrenaline on two wheels. The agile body and lightweight frame gained instant traction for the RC 390 around the world. The bike was a gamechanger and claimed the top spot as one of the most popular entry-level supersport bikes. The innovation and superior engineering ensured that KTM always remained an undisputed champion of the class. The RC 390 went through minor tweaks and modest changes over the years. The first images of the 2022 KTM RC 390 were displayed on the site and gave a glimpse into an edgier version of the bike. With the 2022 RC 390, the Austrian motorcycle maker has taken things to the next level.

To meet the ever-increasing hype for the latest model version of the RC 390, KTM has ensured that the bike resolves all the issues from the previous models to create an ergonomically sound and magnificent entry-level supersport. Here’s a glimpse at the 2022 KTM RC 390.

KTM redesigned the RC range for 2022 and gave it a broader look. The streamlined shape of the bike is gone, and with a fish-like body, the RC 390 has become hunkier. KTM discontinued the extended windshield, dual headlight set-up, and pointed front-fairing. They are replaced by integrated turn signals, single-unit headlamps, and fascia. The cutting-edge fairing comes without the under-belly panel, which exposes the exhaust plumping for a different outlook.

Sporting a larger fuel tank, the RC 390 has revised the subframes and clip-on handlebars. The RC 390 has flatter split seats with extra padding and a sportier rider perch for the latest iteration. The look for the 2022 RC 390 is inspired by the KTM Red Bull MotoGP and uses the same shades of blue and orange for the quirkiness. Continental ContiRoad sport touring tires are featured on the 2022 RC 390, also used for all the new RC models.

KTM is replacing the LCD with a full-color TFT display, similar to the RC Duke 390. Navigation functionality and Bluetooth connectivity will also be offered with the new bike. The headlamp and taillamp will also feature a full-LED display for safer maneuvering. Like the previous version, the 2022 RC 390 will use ride-by-wire technology to offer various riding modes for various streets and terrains.

With ‘390’ painted on the panels, the 2022 KTM RC 390 will feature a 373.5 CC single-engine liquid-cooled cylinder, similar to its previous iteration. While the gearbox has no changes, there is a significant increase in the size of ratios. KTM has changed the heat management system that now includes a dual-cooling fan set-up in the radiator to offer optimum temperature.

As the changes offer the maximum power to the wheel, the RC 390 will produce 43 HP and 25.8 lb-ft of torque. For the 2022 model, KTM has revamped the chassis for an ergonomic riding experience. The design will enable improved weight distribution as compared to the 49-51 in the current model. The bike features a new frame and subframe, and the suspension system has been tweaked to provide optimum comfort. Additionally, the RC 390 will feature IMU-based ABS and Traction Control units.

The exhaust system set-up will be equipped with a redesigned side-slung end-can, and there is an added mesh on the exhaust exit to prevent a cracked exhaust manifold. With these changes to the peripherals in heating and cooling systems, the 2022 RC 390 comes with the most rider-friendly chassis. The new RC has a quick bi-directional shifter to allow easier clutchless shifting.

A superbike for beginners and professionals alike, the KTM RC 390 has been due for an upgrade for quite some time. With intense testing done on the past iterations, KTM will be releasing fully-faired motorcycles for the 2022 RC series. With the same design treatment in mind for all the variants, only the RC 390 will feature the shades of blue and orange, adapted from the MotoGP racing.

While the prices remain undisclosed for the RC 390, it is likely to remain slightly higher than $5,549, which was the base cost for the 2020 model. The price of the bike remains comparatively lower than its competitors, making it an easy win.

The initial response to the KTM RC 390 was met with little enthusiasm. However, the images displayed on KTM’s website indicated that the Austrian motorcycle maker has reengineered the model to offer solutions to the common complaints with the past models. Providing a comfortable ride at a reasonable price, the 2022 KTM RC 390 is certainly a head-turner. As Austria’s Red Bull racing commences in August 2021, KTM is likely to use the occasion to introduce the 2022 KTM RC 390.

When it comes to daily commute facing the real traffic on a daily basis - Duke 250 has only 1 advantage which is shorter handlebar which makes it easier to do cutting and riding zig zag leaving behind others and easily overtaking fellow riders/drivers. Advantage which Duke 390 has is basically dual channel abs which helps you a lot in emergency braking conditions and is much safer option.. on top of it... It is more powerpacked.. It has enhanced TFT display and Bluetooth connectivity which gives you an ease of changing songs, increasing & decreasing volume.. receiving and declining calls from the handlebar itself.. in city traffic its slow moving traffic and its a big hassle to frequently operate your phone wether you have to receive calls.. disconnect existing call or even decline the call... With the help of TFT display you get to know who is calling... wether or not to receive call and you can do all sorts of stuff from the handlebar itself without removing your hands off from the throttle, clutch or brakes. But the only disadvantage is a broad handlebar... RC390 and other bikes have a really short handlebar which helps them to just overtake from a narrow path between two vehicles whereas Duke390 might fail to do so...

The 390 Duke in its BS6 form gets a bi-directional quick shifter. Apart from these, there are no changes in cycle parts, design, and mechanicals. KTM India has launched the 2022 390 Duke in the Indian market with new colour options. The sub-500cc roadster from the Austrian brand is available in two new paint schemes – Dark Galvano and Liquid Metal. The Dark Galvano theme features a stealthy look while Liquid Metal packs a bolder colour combination with a bright orange paint for the fuel tank, rear panel, and chassis.

The changes to the 2022 model are limited to the addition of paint revisions. Meanwhile, the motorcycle retains styling elements such as the 1290 SuperDuke-inspired headlight, a muscular fuel tank, split-style seat, side-slung exhaust, and 17-inch alloy wheels on both ends. The feature list, too, remains unaltered and the 2022 390 Duke retains full-LED lighting, Bluetooth-enabled colour-TFT display, quickshifter, and dual-channel ABS.

The mechanical specifications are identical to its predecessor and the 2022 model continues to use the BS6-compliant 373cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that makes 42.9bhp at 9,000rpm and 37Nm of peak torque at 7,000rpm. The hardware on the motorcycle comprises trellis frame, aluminium swingarm, upside-down front forks, preload-adjustable rear mono-shock, and disc brakes on both wheels.

The KTM 390 Duke is a popular motorcycle for those who are looking for a naked bike in the mid range market that combines style, performance and affordability.

The KTM Duke range has been around for quite a while now and its original no-nonsense aggressive body position really struck a chord with the motorcycle crowds. It was a highly rebellious and anti-social machine that didn’t give a damn. It was lightweight, quick, at home on the road and circuits alike and just did not care.

Since their days of rebellion, the current KTM Duke models have seen several changes, with the bigger Duke 1290 R bypassing the lightweight feature in favour of more power and adopting the more modern triangle type headlamps.

Therefore, the larger KTM Duke has shifted its focus away from its roots; yet, with the 390, it appears that the new “Lord” has taken up its grandfather’s mantle and made it cool once again.

KTM offered its 390 with a completely new intricate engine design, in contrast to the 200 cc KTM Duke (only sold in the Asian market), which is essentially the 125 cc model with an engine that has been bored out.

The compact engine on the KTM 390 Duke provides lots of torque, quick acceleration, decent road characteristics, and excellent fuel efficiency. Thanks to its meticulous fuel injection system, compact 43.5 horsepower engine and 35.3 Nm of torque the KTM 390 Duke is quite a dynamic performer and one of the most powerful options for riders with an A2 licence.

Redesigned ultra-light, high-performance WP upside-down forks are included with the KTM 390 Duke. The well balanced suspension makes use of the latest open cartridge technology, which performs superbly when driving on the limit and is also attractive and simple to maintain. Matched with a WP Monoshock, both ends offer 150 mm of travel with pre-load adjustment only.

The same single four-piston ByBre radial caliper as the 125 Duke’s provides the stopping power for the KTM 390 Duke, and braided lines are included as standard. You honestly don’t need much more performance than this on a bike as light as the Duke, especially because ByBre is a Brembo sub-brand, so the stopping power you get will certainly be enough.

All KTM 390 Duke models come equipped with dual-channel advanced ABS from Bosch for controlled stopping power, and there is even a secret switch on the dash that enables a “supermoto” mode that allows riders to turns off the rear ABS but not the front ABS if you wanted to slip into “hooligan” mode for ultimate cornering fun.

When moving slowly through a city, the KTM 390 Duke weaves through traffic with no effort. It’s on the open country roads where it lives up to its nickname of “The Corner Rocket” though as it drops in and out of corners effortlessly thanks to the WP suspension and lack of weight.

The KTM 390 Duke seems more like a “large bike” with its first class sport riding ergonomics which is great for taller riders however the seat a bit too firm.

An innovative multicolor TFT display adorns the handlebar which isn’t much to look at compared to all the data KTM normally supply but it does come with a fuel gauge so you can’t complain too much.

Since the KTM 390 Duke’s first release in 2013, it has undergone two additional iterations. First, in 2017, when the Duke received a new TFT color display, a bigger steel fuel tank (from 11 to 13.4 litres) which provided perfect knee contact and a change from 5 to 6 gears.

The 2021 KTM 390 Duke featured the new WP APEX front and rear suspension, ride by wire throttle for a smooth throttle response, slipper clutch, optional quick shifter, wider TFT display, and a more chiselled appearance to match its larger capacity siblings.

The Duke 390 is marketed for road and circuit riding. Avoid excessively customised or accessorised bikes when shopping for a used KTM 390 Duke since this can typically indicate that the bike has been in an accident of some sort, dropped or slid down the track.

Watch out for alarms as well; not many bikes have them installed and the KTM 390 Duke has a very small battery, with older alarm systems and small batteries this may be quite a hassle if you don’t ride the bike frequently or put it on a charger to keep the battery charged.

A few owners have complained that the engine can leak oil (sadly not unusual on KTMs), with the rocker cover being the major weak spot. Worrisome allegations have also been made about the gearbox failing, however these are few but worth keeping in mind.

Although I personally don’t like naked bikes or streetfighters, I can see how the KTM 390 Duke would be perfectly suited for a beginner rider as it is ultra lightweight, nimble and enjoyable – not to mention reasonably-priced. By newbie standards it delivers arm wrenching torque too so a beginner certainly won’t get bored quickly.

The KTM 390 Duke’s manoeuvrability, outstanding fuel economy providing an unbelievably long range and low weight may also appeal to those who already have their unrestricted licence as a city commuter bike for weaving through congested streets and having a bit of fun while doing it.
